Great News! The Church Council voted unanimously to extend the hand of friendship to a church we have gotten to know in Weferlingen, Germany. Our Choir sang there and the people were so kind to us. Their Church council president came here in the fall for a sym-posium and stayed with our church council president!
We received word last week that The Wegerlingen Church also
approved the idea. This means we officially have a sister Church in Germany. We will trade newsletter articles, pictures, joys and concerns and if anyone gets to Germany, you would be most welcome to visit!
More about this fun relationship as it unfolds.

From Pastor Rob’s Desk
The LGBT Fallen Heroes Fund was established in 2011 as a way to honor LGBTQ
police, military, and first responders and their survivors in ways that honor their
relationships. Many LGBT Fallen Heroes are not given that honor as they are buried
without acknowledgment of their spouse/partner with the flag and other honors
presented to other family members instead. Our own Sarah Tresselt (Loudon Coun-
ty Detective and Grace Church member who died in 2015) was honored in 2016.
Again this year, Pastor Rob had the honor of serving as the presiding clergy for a memorial service held during
Police Week in the Women's Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery where 8 persons were remembered
and their partners/spouses were duly recognized. This year, for the second time, Rob Apgar sang the National
Anthem. Grace Church makes a difference in our community and our world!
Dear Friends,
As summer approaches and the school year come to an end, life goes into slow
gear. And that’s a good thing. I do love summer. It feels so relaxing and stress
free. The Baseball games, barbeques, days at the beach. It is filled with wonderful
opportunities to be with the ones we love and to maybe even get a little time to
ourselves. We need to rest. We need downtime, especially since life is just so
busy throughout the year.
The scriptures talk about the importance of rest and replenishment . Our oft used
word “recreation “, means more than playing. It means re-creation! We are taking time to re-create ourselves; to
re-energize for the months to come. Jesus was very intentional about taking time for himself. He got away by
himself to pray. He spent time with his friends and all those who were important. Jesus knew his boundaries and
he knew when he needed to refresh. Why don’t we? We are certainly no more important than he!
The fact is that we do need to refresh ourselves with relaxation and fun. Read a book, go fishing, spend a lazy day
at the beach or the park. DO whatever you need to do to feed yourself so you are better equipped to be present
for all those who need you.
And you know what else Jesus did? He worshipped! That’s right, even in the midst of busy times, even when un-
der stress, Jesus made time to his faith. And we should too! This summer, don’t forget your faith. Make worship a
priority. If you are away, find a church where you are and visit! If you see something you like, bring it back and tell
me! Maybe we can learn something new here too.
Enjoy your summer but don’t forget the priority of your faith. Set time for worship and keep focused on your spir-
itual practices so that you continue to grow in faith and godliness.
Have a wonderful month!

For All the Saints
St Columba (June 9)
St. Columba 521-597, Born probably in Donegal Ireland of royal descent he studied at Mo-
ville under St. Finnian then in Leinster at the monastery of Clonard under another St. Finn-
ian. He was ordained before he was twenty-five and spent the next fifteen years preach-
ing and setting up foundations at Derry, Durrow, and Kells. Possibly because of a family
feud which resulted in the death of 3000 and for which he considered himself partly re-
sponsible he left Ireland at 42 and landed on the island of Iona off the coast of Scotland. There he built the mon-
astery which was to become world famous. With saints Canice and Comgall he spread the gospel to the Picts;
he also developed a monastic rule which many followed until the introduction of St. Benedicts. He died on Iona
and is also known as Colm, Colum and Columcille. Feast day is June 9.

Johann Sebastian Bach (July 28th)
Johann Sebastian Bach was better known as a virtuoso organist than as a composer in his day.
His sacred music, organ and choral works, and other instrumental music had an enthusiasm
and seeming freedom that concealed immense rigor. Bach's use of counterpoint was brilliant
and innovative, and the immense complexities of his compositional style -- which often includ-
ed religious and numerological symbols that seem to fit perfectly together in a profound puzzle
of special codes -- still amaze musicians today. Many consider him the greatest composer of all
time.
Bach was born in Eisenach in 1685. He was taught to play the violin and harpsichord by his father, Johann Am-
brosius, a court trumpeter in the service of the Duke of Eisenach. Young Johann was not yet ten when his father
died, leaving him orphaned. He was taken in by his recently married oldest brother, Johann Christoph, who lived
in Ohrdruf. Because of his excellent singing voice, Bach attained a position at the Michaelis monastery at Lüne-
berg in 1700. His voice changed a short while later, but he stayed on as an instrumentalist. After taking a short-
lived post in Weimar in 1703 as a violinist, Bach became organist at the Neue Kirche in Arnstadt (1703-1707). His
relationship with the church council was tenuous as the young musician often shirked his responsibilities, prefer-
ring to practice the organ. One account describes a four-month leave granted Bach, to travel to Lubeck where he
would familiarize himself with the music of Dietrich Buxtehude. He returned to Arnstadt long after he was ex-
pected and much to the dismay of the council. He then briefly served at St. Blasius in Mühlhausen as organist,
beginning in June 1707, and married his cousin, Maria Barbara Bach, that fall. Bach composed his famous Tocca-
ta and Fugue in D minor (BWV 565) and his first cantatas while in Mühlhausen, but quickly outgrew the musical
resources of the town. He next took a post for the Duke of Sachsen-Weimar in 1708, serving as court organist
and playing in the orchestra, eventually becoming its leader in 1714. He wrote many organ compositions during

IMPORTANT NEWS from FINANCE and PROPERTY BOARD
The kitchen/basement project is ongoing and the asbestos has been removed from the kitchen, and we will have another update soon from the contractor. It’s so hard to know so much work is going on without being able to go check in on its progress. A reminder that we will have no access to the basement whatsoever until the abatement processes are complete. We hope the project to be completed by early May. Other Items completed recently are plumbing repairs to the women restroom on the first floor, and additional repairs to the GSR floor tiles, and sprucing up of the front entrance. The broken pew on the left rear side of the church should be resolved soon. Later this summer Peter Abell will be doing his Eagle Scout project in the churches rear yard. This project will provide additional seating area, but should really spruce up the area and make it more inviting to visit, rather than just be an area that we walk through to get to the church. As always, if you notice something in the church that needs to be looked at, please contact me or any member of the commission. Thanks! Mark Edwards, Finance and Property Commission Chair
For All the Saints (cont’d)
this period, including his Orgel-Büchlein. Owing to politics between the Duke and his officials, Bach left Weimar
and secured a post in December 1717 as Kapellmeister at Cöthen. In 1720, Bach's wife suddenly died, leaving
him with four children (three others had died in infancy). A short while later, he met his second wife, soprano
Anna Magdalena Wilcke, whom he married in December 1721. She would bear 13 children, though only five
would survive childhood. The six Brandenburg Concertos (BWV 1046-51), among many other secular works,
date from his Cöthen years. Bach became Kantor of the Thomas School in Leipzig in May 1723 and held the post
until his death. It was in Leipzig that he composed the bulk of his religious and secular cantatas. Bach eventually
became dissatisfied with this post, not only because of its meager financial rewards, but also because of oner-
ous duties and inadequate facilities. Thus, he took on other projects, chief among which was the directorship of
the city's Collegium Musicum, an ensemble of professional and amateur musicians who gave weekly concerts, in
1729. He also became music director at the Dresden Court in 1736, in the service of Frederick Augustus II;
though his duties were vague and apparently few, they allowed him freedom to compose what he wanted. Bach
began making trips to Berlin in the 1740s, not least because his son Carl Philipp Emanuel served as a court musi-
cian there. In May 1747, the composer was warmly received by King Frederick II of Prussia, for whom he wrote
the gloriously abstruse Musical Offering (BWV 1079). Among Bach's last works was his 1749 Mass in B minor.
Besieged by diabetes, he died on July 28, 1750.
