G RACE NOTES October 2015 Pastor’s Notes: For the last three Sundays in September you heard members of the Worship and Music Committee speaking in support of the drive to acquire Glory to God: The Presbyterian Hymnal for use in our congregation. Allow me to add my voice here. To sing in church is no trivial matter. It may be inspiring, it may be moving, it may even be entertaining at times, but none of these are the principal purpose for congregational song. Rather, that purpose is best described in the words of (appropriately enough) a hymn: So has the church, in liturgy and song, In faith and love, through centuries of wrong, Borne witness to the truth in every tongue. --“When In Our Music God Is Glorified,” stanza 3 (from GtG) Simply put, Glory to God will help us live up to that heritage more completely. The collection includes hymns from the earliest centuries of the church and the twenty-first century. It includes hymns that sing praise, speak adoration of God, witness to the life of Christ, lift up the church in prayer, testify to the moving of the Holy Spirit, exhort the Body of Christ, give voice to our sorrows and laments, and speak to and for those of God’s children long silenced. It includes hymns from all six inhabited continents, recognizing the truly global nature of the body of Christ. It draws from a dizzying variety of Christian traditions and denominations and practices, while being scrupulous in its theological expression. It will help us to live up to scripture as we “sing a new song to the Lord” (Psalm 96:1), “make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation” (Psalm 95:1), “sing praises to my God all my life long” (Psalm 146:2), “teach and admonish one another in all wisdom, and with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God” (Colossians 3:16), and cheerfully “sing songs of praise” (James 5:13). And at $20 per hymnal, it’s a bargain for 853 songs. I hope you will give “with glad and generous hearts” (Acts 2:46).

GRACE NOTES

October 2015 Pastor’s Notes:

For the last three Sundays in September you heard members of the Worship and Music Committee speaking in support of the drive to acquire Glory to God: The Presbyterian Hymnal for use in our congregation. Allow me to add my voice here.

To sing in church is no trivial matter. It may be inspiring, it may be moving, it may even be entertaining at times, but none of these are the principal purpose for congregational song. Rather, that purpose is best described in the words of (appropriately enough) a hymn:

So has the church, in liturgy and song,

In faith and love, through centuries of wrong,

Borne witness to the truth in every tongue.

--“When In Our Music God Is Glorified,” stanza 3 (from GtG)

Simply put, Glory to God will help us live up to that heritage more completely.

INCOME REPORT FOR AUGUST 2015

NON-BUDGETED INCOME FOR 2015

YARD SALE AND MISSION TRIP The Grace Presbyterian Church yard sale on Saturday, August 8,2015 sponsored by the youth group was very

successful. The youth gathered up donated furniture, clothing, toys, games, puzzles, small appliances, office furniture,

bedding, dishes, bicycles, luggage, etc. and welcomed the public into our Fellowship Hall on Saturday, August 8th from

8:00 a.m. till 1:00 p.m. They were able to raise more than $500.00 that will go towards their youth mission trip next

summer. Although the exact location for the mission trip has yet to be determined, we do know that it will be in the

United States and it will be a Family Mission Trip. This means that people of all ages will be able to participate in this

mission trip. We will be building handicap ramps where needed, repairing and painting homes, teaching VBS,

coordinating and participating in sporting activities for underprivileged youth, serving meals to the homeless, etc. We

are VERY excited for all of the opportunities to help others. We would like to thank everyone for assisting us in our

fundraising ventures and would like to encourage any and all of you to consider participating in this mission trip in any

Worship and Music Committee

Dorothy Nevill

The Worship and Music Committee met on Sunday, September 20. They finalized plans for the Glory to God hymnal drive and also began to discuss the upcoming Advent Season.

On September 20 Hannah Micheaux made an announcement about the new hymnal. Debbie Harris spoke on September 27.

The drive to purchase the new hymnal, Glory to God, runs until October 25, 2015. Please return your order form and payment either in the offering plate or at the of-fice by that date. A Donation/Order form is included in this copy of Grace Notes. A brochure entitled Glory to God: The Presbyterian Hymnal and an article on Fifteen Facts about Glory to God may be found in the narthex.

World Communion Sunday will be celebrated on October 4. It is wonderful to think that around the world on that day our fellow Christians are united.

The Rev. Sandra Hedrick will be our pulpit supply on November 1. She is the Stat-ed Clerk of St. Augustine Presbytery and has previously graced our pulpit.

The Rev. Paul Gillespie will be our pulpit supply on November 22. Paul has served the congregation devotedly for many years. He has taught the adult Sunday School Class, visited congregational members both in their homes and in the hospital, and brought communion to those who could not attend church.

The next meeting of the Worship and Music Committee will be held on October 18 in the library right after worship.

The Worship and Music Committee Needs Your Help

We have many 1990 “blue hymnals” in our pews that were dedicated “in honor of” or “in memory of” individuals. Karen Russ went through all of them and compiled a master list. We desire to contact as many of these individuals as we can to let them choose whether they want the hymnals to be returned to them or whether we may include these dedicated hymnals with the rest of the 1990 “blue hymnals” which will be given to a church in our Presbytery which needs them.

Although some of the names were familiar to us and we were able to contact them, many remained unknown. We need your help in locating the individuals below. If you have any information at all, especially contact information, about any of the names listed below; please share them with Dorothy Nevill, Karen Russ, Julie Woodward or any member of the committee. Thank you very much for your help.
