How to alleviate this problem? O ften times, a lot of our writer’s anxiety can be attributed to situational factors. Do you periodically worry about impressing your peers, your professors, or even yourself with your writing? This can result in negative emotions, reduced concentrative ability, a reduction in cognitive functioning, smaller attention spans, etc. All of which don’t help writing! The University of Utah By G race Hanley What is writer’s anxiety? It is imperative that you recognize that writing is a complex process. But you must also remember that you are a student and that failures here or there will define your writing journey and in turn make you a stronger writer. So: Prac tic e!!! Recognize when you’re experimenting with a new writing genre Applaud yourself when you succeed! But don’t forget to empower yourself! C ollaboration! Talk to your peers, instructors, friends, or family about what stresses you out. Discuss your ideas, your process, and even share writing pieces that have failed O R succeeded. W hile it is important to get a variety of opinions, also find someone who can look at your work consistently and note your progress and/or things you need to develop. Sed justo. Your anxiety can manifest in a multitude of forms: Physiologic ally through tension, nervousness, & anxiety Mentally/Behaviorally through proc rastination, avoidance, & bullying oneself Socially through fearing judgment from one’s peers or professors Sometimes just taking a deep breath is a great first step.
