HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

25 She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future.

26 When she speaks, her words are wise, and she gives instructions with kindness.

27 She carefully watches everything in her household and suffers nothing from laziness.

28 Her children stand and bless her. Her husband praises her:

29 “There are many virtuous and capable women in the world, but you surpass them all!”

30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last; but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised.

31 Reward her for all she has done. Let her deeds publicly declare her praise.

This month’s issue is dedicated to the hardest working woman on the planet . . . our Mothers! There is none like her. We all be-lieve that we have the Best Mother in the world. This woman that we call Mother is by far God’s greatest creation. The thing that sets her apart is her everlasting love for her children and her intent that they lead normal, well-adjusted lives. Her attributes are so much like the attributes of God. She can be all things at once; whatever her children need her to be she can be that at the drop of a hat. In fact this woman can wear multiple hats all at the same time. Although overworked and underpaid, Mother never complains. She will work her fingers to the bone for her children. She will

come to their rescue, no matter what the cause. These are, after all, her God-given ‘talents’ to take and use for the glory of God. He expects Mother to raise and nurture her ‘charges’ to become the best they can be in this world, and to equip them for their God given purpose in this world. Not until we become adults, do we really begin to appreciate who Mother really is. She has nurtured us through our childhood, put up with our sassy, lazy ways during our teenage years, comforted us through our fears, and supported our dreams. Mother has always been there to encourage us when we made a mistake or fell down; if she was ever disappointed she never let it show and was always willing to help us get up on our feet again. As we grow older and have our own children, we realize that Mother was a very strong person. We also realize just what it takes to fill her shoes. In our eyes our mothers will never grow old and we are never too old to need her. On Mother’s Day, we will go all out to celebrate this woman God cre-ated; and she deserves it all and then some! Mother will always hold a place deep in our hearts.

A Mother’s Day Prayer I said a Mother’s Day prayer for you to thank the Lord above for blessing me with a lifetime of your tenderhearted love. I thanked God for the caring you’ve shown me through the years, for the closeness we’ve enjoyed in time of laughter and of tears. And so, I thank you from the heart for all you’ve done for me and I bless the Lord for giving me the best mother there could be! –Anon

“It was a year ago this month that my mother went home to be with the Lord. So this is my first Mother’s Day without my closest friend. It has been a difficult journey, a journey that no one can prepare you for nor travel with you. I know that Mother’s Day can be a difficult day for those

who no longer have their mothers here with them. Be

encouraged by your memories of her and the time you shared together. Know that she would not want you to be sad this day but to find comfort in knowing that she is always near right there in your heart. Let us find comfort that God has promised us we will be with them again.”

Church from Alexandria, VA will close out the anniversary at 3:30PM.

G&G: Pastor Brown, ok let’s go back to the beginning. Looking back at where you were when you started this journey, where did you think it was going to lead you? Are you at all surprised at where you are today? Dr. Brown: As I look back over 25 years, I think about my candidacy for First St. Stephen’s. I was a candidate for a church that had several pastors before me and I would be coming in as the youngest pastor in their history. My wife and I would be the youngest in the church. After being selected we went to work, trusting God to grow the church. I knew God had something great in store for this ministry. I was trying my best as a young pastor to hear God’s voice and be led by the Holy Spirit as I allowed God to order my steps. To be honest, I made it 25 years by the hands of the Lord.

G&G: Pastor Brown, what was the turning point in your journey or that moment when you realized that God had called you to an assignment of this magnitude?Dr. Brown: : I will never forget when we were in the original building (which was a house converted to a church); I had just concluded an officers meeting with plans to announce to the church the next Sunday, that we would be breaking ground to build a new edifice. At that time the church had approximately 38 members who fully connected with this vision. It was at that moment, I realized 38 members and a fairly new pastor had a major assignment ahead that would truly take the Lord to bring this vision to pass. In addition, after much, much prayer and the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the support of my wife and family, we stepped out on faith and God has proven Himself faithful ever since. Philippians 4:19, “And my God will supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”

G&G: Pastor Brown, along with this awesome assignment, what were some of the unexpected hurdles in building this ministry? What would you say was the biggest risk you have taken at First St. Stephen’s that achieved great results? Dr. Brown: Along with the usual hurdles with financing a vision for a new church, I soon found myself trying to keep the membership together during the two church moves prior to marching into the present church building. My biggest risk was departing my full time job to serve the church fulltime. Doing so, afforded me more time to devote to the Word of God and the needs of the ministry. This risk was evident by the increase in the growth of the ministry both spiritually and numerically over the years.

G&G: Pastor Brown, pastoring for 25 years, I’m sure you have experienced many changes at First St. Stephen’s Baptist Church and in ministry as a whole. What would you say is the most significant change that has impacted you and the church? Dr. Brown: The most significant change has been the building of

the present edifice. It was a turning point in the life of the church where we saw the hand of God move beyond what we could imagine.

G&G: Pastor Brown, how would you describe the ministry of First St. Stephens Baptist Church, and why should someone come to this ministry/church that may be looking for a church home?Dr. Brown: First St. Stephen’s is a growing, thriving, anointed church. Everyone can grow and develop their gift(s) as a disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is a church where you will receive powerful preaching and teaching, and anointed singing. It has often been said that the love shown exemplifies a loving and caring church.

G&G: Pastor Brown, historically the Black church was the foundation of the Black community, especially during the civil rights movement. Do you believe the church still has a voice in the

community and should the church be involved in the issues that are plaguing our communities today?Dr. Brown: Yes, I believe the church has a voice in the community. I believe some churches still serve as the foundation of the community. I think it is important that the church is involved with the issues of the community. Our communities hear from the White House and the State House, they also need to hear God’s voice from God’s House. I believe the church is the beacon light for the community. A prime example is the Freddie Gray incident, when Pastors and Bishops left their churches and walked arm in arm down Monroe Street as a

statement that we need to seek Christ for guidance in healing our communities.

G&G: How does the First St. Stephens Baptist Church involve itself in the community in which it resides?Dr. Brown: We are involved in numerous ways. We feed the needy through our food pantry throughout the year and at Thanksgiving and Christmas. I require each ministry to do outreach in addition to the church’s overall outreach ministry. We visit shelters and senior homes to share the Good News of the Lord and fellowship with the tenants. We offer a free G.E.D. class. We host an outdoor summer fair for the community. Our day care center “Earthly Angels Child Care Center” serves the community. We have an annual Back to School drive, we participate in the “Good News Club”, and we partner with “The Zeta Center”. We have developed a positive relationship with the residence of our immediate community and the community leaders. We have also

Q&A

recently began a ministry entitled “From the Pulpit to the Pew to the Pavement”, taking the call of evangelism to the heart and trying to live out the great commission in Matthew 28:19, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations…”

G&G: Pastor Brown, after 25 years of ministry, I believe it’s safe to say that you are a successful pastor with a successful ministry. What would you say it takes to be a successful pastor today? What are your thoughts on why so many pastors are leaving ministry? Dr. Brown: There is no cookie cutter formula that works for every pastor. For me, I focused on teaching, preaching, being consistent in prayer, and loving the body of Christ. To be successful I would advise a pastor to make sure he or she is led by the Holy Spirit in all areas of ministry. Surround yourself with spirit filled men & women who love the Lord and have adopted your vision. It takes prayer, prayer and more prayer. I think some pastors are leaving ministry due to a lack of balance that often causes burn-out. That is something I had to learn. Pastors burn out because they give all their energy to the church and reserve nothing for themselves or their family. You need a holistic balance or what I call a “Holy balance”; Pastors have to do what Jesus did, break away for a time of refreshing.

G&G: Pastor Brown, what would you say to that aspiring preacher who is looking to become a pastor or start a ministry?Dr. Brown: First, I would say, be sure of your call. At the end of the day, all you have is your call. I would also tell them to have a strong prayer life and love for the Word of God. I would encourage them to be sure to develop themselves as Paul told Timothy in II Timothy 2:15, “Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

G&G: Pastor Brown, what are you most proud of about the ministry of First St. Stephens Baptist Church?Dr. Brown: : I am most proud of the fact that the continuing generations of the founders have caught the vision and have a heart for God and are still working with the vision. Although some of the Seasoned Saints are no longer able to serve faithfully and others have gone home to be with the Lord, it is good to see their next generations step up and hold on to the theme and vision of the church, “Drive and Go Forward”( II Kings 4:24).

◆ ◆ ◆

G&G: Pastor Brown, my last few questions are more personal, first what three words would you use to describe yourself? Dr. Brown: Humble, God-Fearing and Faithful.

G&G: Would you share with us something that most people would be surprised to know about you? What do you do for fun and what makes you really happy?

Dr. Brown: I am happy when I spend quality time with my wife and son and when the opportunity affords itself I enjoy playing golf and the driving range.

G&G: What do you like to read and are you reading anything right now? Dr. Brown: I am a student of the Word of God and I am always reading. I enjoy books on leadership, preaching and empowerment. I am presently reading Everyone Communicates, Few Connect by John Maxwell; It Happens After Prayer by H.B. Charles, Jr.; Building Your Leadership Resume by Johnny M. Hunt; Simple Church by Thom Rainer & Eric Geiger and Nine Marks of a Healthy Church by Mark Dever.

G&G: Pastor Brown, many pastors have shared with me that ‘preaching the gospel’ was not what they had initially planned for their lives. Did you also have other plans for your life? Did your father Rev. Aggie L. Brown, Sr., a preacher of the gospel, influence your path? Dr. Brown: Every son has the desire to be like his father in one way or another especially if they are doing something positive. Preaching was not my first desire. In high school I wanted to be a math teacher or a politician, I also considered becoming a State Trooper. During my senior year I accepted the call to preach the Gospel. I then purposed in my heart to walk in my Father’s footsteps.

G&G: Pastor Brown, with 25 years under your belt, was there ever instances when you just wanted to quit and walk away from ministry? Is there a secret to longevity in ministry? Dr. Brown: There has never been a time when I wanted to quit or walk away but there have been times when I was weary from the journey. During those times I would retreat for rest, reflection and prayer allowing God to remind me of why I was called to this assignment. During those times, I would meditate on God’s Word in Galatians 6:9, “And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.”

G&G: Pastor Brown, is there anyone who has had a tremendous impact on you as a leader, maybe someone who has been a mentor to you? How did this person impact your life?Dr. Brown: Of course my Father- Bishop Aggie Brown, Sr., is a living example of what pastoring is all about. There were men of God placed in my life like Pastor Willie Green who displayed how to have a heart of a pastor. Bishop Clifford Johnson shared with me on many occasions the importance of building the leaders of the church and the importance of allowing God to show me my leadership style which is Servant Leader. Rev. Marcus G. Wood encouraged me to continue my Christian education. Pastor Kenneth Barney, Sr. taught me the power of evangelism and how to make disciples. Bishop Oscar E. Brown afforded me the opportunity to go behind the scene and witness ministry with the Spirit of Excellence. Even until this day, God continues to send men that I can connect with that

help me through the journey. Bishop Walter S. Thomas, Sr. has developed Kingdom Association of Covenant Pastors to help Pastors throughout the country learn ministry at the next level. Bishop Heber Brown, II has poured insight and wisdom into my life. Bishop Richard Pender, Sr. has been a constant encouragement and keeps me lifted in prayer. Lastly, there are men and women I grew up with in ministry at the Great Dalton Church such as Pastor Anthony Chandler, Pastor O.T. Jones, Pastor Lee Pearson, Sr., Pastor Willie Barr, Jr., Pastor Delores Prout and Rev. Claudette Britt who continue to push me by their prayers. G&G: Pastor Brown, after traveling through this 25 year journey, what would you say you now know for sure? And if you could go back 25 years, what would you say to your younger self? Dr. Brown: After a 25 year journey, I would say I know now that God is faithful. I have grown to see God do powerful things in my life. I grew up in a Christian home and witnessed powerful things, but now I know the power of God for myself. I can say that God is truly faithful. I have been in situations where my faith was tried and the Lord came through. To my younger self I would say, “Stay the course, stay focused on the assignment, don’t get side tracked by the pain and problems – it will work out.” G&G: Pastor Brown, finally what are your plans for the future of First St. Stephens Baptist Church?Dr. Brown: My plans are to continue winning souls for Christ, making disciples and leaving a lasting legacy for the next generation to build upon. I Cor. 2:9 states, “Eyes have not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” We will also continue to build in 3 phases. Phase 1- is to complete the new parking lot adjacent to our existing building. Phase 2- we will expand our current structure for adequate classroom, administration and meeting space, which will also allow for additional fellowship space in the sanctuary to meet the need of our growing congregation. Phase 3- we will upgrade the Child Care Center by adding an Infant Suite and Head Start

program to minister to the community; this vision will produce State of the Art facilities. Habakkuk 2:2 reminds us too, “Write the vision and make it plain on tablets, that he may run who reads it.” G&G: Pastor Brown, is there any one you would like to give special thanks to? Dr. Brown: First, I want to thank God for the great things He has done. It is a blessing to celebrate 25 years of service at The First St. Stephen’s Baptist Church. I am grateful to God for the Late Founder Dr. George Jackson, Sr. I have been blessed with

the honor of standing on the shoulders of a great man. My heartfelt thanks go to my wife, Reenea and my son Aggie, III for their unselfish personal sacrifices. I thank God for blessing me with such a loving and supportive family. Words cannot express my deepest appreciation for their prayers, love, and support. A special thanks is extended to my Father, Bishop Aggie L. Brown, Sr. and Mother Retha Brown, to my parents- in-love, Calvin and Phyllis Seibles, and my siblings. I love each of you. To my colleagues and friends, thank you for your support. I wish to extend my gratitude to every ministry for your continued service to the Body of Christ. To the Deacons and Trustees, Deacon’s Wives, Missionaries, Praise Team, Ushers and Nurses, Administrative Assistant, Armor Bearers, Pastoral Care, Ministerial Staff, Sunday School Teachers, Bible Institute, Children’s Church, Men’s and Women’s Ministry, Married Couples Ministry, BEST Summer Camp, Earthly Angels Child Care Center, Christian’s On Patrol (COPS), Youth and Young Adults, Dance Ministry, Multimedia, Music and Transportation Ministry, combined Youth and Mighty Men’s

MommyCare

Happy Mother’s Day to all of you fabulous moms, grandmoms, moms-to-be, and those of you caring for children like they are yours. Motherhood is a wonderful gift to be cherished and appreciated. The ability to give life and love another human being selflessly and unconditionally is an amazing reflection of the special love that God has for us. As beautiful and amazing as motherhood is, it is also a major responsibility. If we as mothers are not careful our health and wellness can suffer in our attempt to be there for our families. I can remember days where I had fed my child and taken care of him and looked up only to realize that I myself hadn’t eaten a thing and was starving. 1 Thessalonians 5:23 expresses the heartbeat of our God in the statement, “May your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless until the coming of our Lord.” If in fact this scripture is God’s desire for us, how do we manage to be loving, godly mothers and still remain spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically healthy and whole? We must recognize that self-care is not selfish! Not only must we come to terms with this fact but we must embrace it and include it in the culture of our families. When I reflect on 1 Thessalonians 5:23 I wonder did God know that we would be mothers when He inspired that scripture. Surely He must know how difficult it is to take care of everyone else and ourselves. But I believe that the amazing, magnificent God that we serve already had taken that into account and yet the scripture still stands. It is God’s desire that we experience wholeness and wellness, not just spiritually but in every area of our lives. Even the airline instructions dictate that before we assist anyone with their mask that we safely secure our own. How many of us take that wisdom into the care for our families? We often help everybody else secure their mask at the expense of us gasping for air. But my sister it is not God’s desire that you be struggling to breathe as you journey through motherhood. It first begins however with us embracing and not feeling guilty with regular self-care practices. Here’s the good news that I have found, regular self-care can be included in our day to day activities. We do not necessarily have to go out of our way or create lots of extra steps. That is good news for the moms with a few children and especially with young children. The key I have found is identifying what truly relaxes you and capitalizing on those moments. For example I

love music and have found music to be truly refreshing to my spirit and mind. When I am in route to pick up my son from school I intentionally play music that invigorates and revitalizes me. I release everything from the day that has happened previously and refocus my energy so that when he arrives with the energy of 10 people I am ready to engage him with joy and energy. Good self-care does require planning and intention. We must pay close attention to our energy levels and our moods and not allow ourselves to go too long without refilling our tanks so that we have enough to give to the children that we love. The reality is that we cannot serve from empty cups. It is God’s desire to see us overflowing and running over with His fruit of the spirit. We must ask ourselves when our tanks get low, what fruit do our children experience. We can easily tell when our tanks are in need of refill because we become less patient, easily irritated and even emotional. It is these moments when we must be honest with ourselves and recognize that we need a “mom-break”. I encourage you to invite your children to understand the significance of a “mom-break” and share with them how they benefit. Explaining “mom-breaks” goes something like this: “Honey mommy wants to be the very best mom I can be for you because I love you so much. In order for me to be that mom, I have to be happy and have moments to myself to refresh. When I take my mom-breaks please know that I am doing so because I love you.” “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth.” It is God’s desire to see us in health and flourish and yes that is before and after you experience the bliss of motherhood. Here’s to your upcoming “mom-breaks” and the increase in your self-care.

Mother’s Day can be tough for a mother who is parenting alone. But moms, I want to encourage you that it should be a day of celebration. It is a day that is about celebrating the gift that God has blessed us with. The word of God tells us in Psalm 127:3 (MSG) “Don’t you see that children are GOD’s best gift? The fruit of the womb his generous legacy?” We did not get a random or cheap gift, but we received God’s best gift. So since we have received God’s best gift, let us show God how much we appreciate the opportunity to love our children in the manner in which our Heavenly Father loves us. I want to challenge you not to put a lot of pressure on yourself (or others) to make the day perfect. Think back on all of the joys that your child/children have brought into your life. Your day can be as special as you want it to be, but you have to choose for it to be special. There is no time to sit around and have a pity party because you may not get a card or gift from your child/children. You must draw the line in the sand and say, “Today is the day that the Lord has given me. I will choose to rejoice today and be glad in it.” Your Mother’s Day may not look how you ever pictured it to be, but God is with you and He continues to bless you. You are highly favored, chosen, complete and whole. You are not less than, you are more than. Remember that a single mother is a woman who is filled with everlasting, unconditional love, and words of wisdom to guide her child/children the way to go through life.

Here are some quick tips on ways to celebrate and enjoy Mother’s Day:• Go to church today. Give God thanks for your child/children. Thank Him for all the blessings He’s given you. Praise Him for being with you during the darkest of times. Praise sure will give you new perspective.• Make it a point to enjoy your children. Do an art project with your child/children. Create a picnic in the park. There are hundreds of small, inexpensive, and creative ways that you can make memories with them.• Find another single mom to serve. There’s much to be said for serving others. Sometimes, the simplest of gestures are the life-changing ones for other people. Invite her over for lunch, a play date with your child/children or invite her to church with you. • Tell your child/children why you love being their mother. Take a moment and mention the things that make them special to you; tell them how much you love them.• Praise yourself for all you do as a mother. Let this day be a time when you see the good that you have done for your child/children. Purchase yourself a bouquet of beautiful flowers or a special gift. Pat yourself on the back for what you have done, and what you are doing, that blesses the life of your child/children.• MOST IMPORTANT! Say a prayer and thank God for this great honor and privilege of being a mother, for there is no greater calling in the entire world than motherhood. I would like to say “thank you” to all those moms who stepped up when your children needed you most, putting your own desires, dreams, and comforts on hold for the sake of others. I celebrate you!

Happy Mother’s Day!

Celebrate the Gift

There are times when as the children of God we need to be reminded of who we are and what we are capable of accomplishing. Sometimes the issues of life drain our spirits and distract us from our purpose and potential. It is times like these when doubt and fear can lead us to become depressed or anxious. When we become overly concerned about the actions of people and the current events in our community and in the world, we can minimize the good works we are called to fulfill. Some of us have thrown up our hands and exclaimed, “What’s the use, nothing’s going to change.” This defeatist attitude is just what our haters and naysayers use to pour salt into our wounded self-image and fosters faulty thinking. We must be willing to confront the lies of others with the truth of God’s word. This will transform our thoughts and actions into positive ones that support our reality in Christ. We have to embrace our role as change agents. Jesus declared that, “Anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done, and even greater works.” (John 14:12) We have to choose to live in the abundance of God’s grace and provision for our purpose. When we are

accepted in the beloved and the apple of God’s eye therefore there is nothing we cannot accomplish. The greater works Jesus declared we could participate in are already in process. Ephesians 2:10 says, “For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” We were created to do great things no matter our background, our family history, our employment status, our church position or our financial history. Jesus has come that we might have life more abundantly and has given us the ability to multiply what we have received. We have gifts, talents and abilities that can be used to bring glory to God and manifest the greater works we have been empowered to do. Giving attention to what God is trying to accomplish in our lives will help to develop our self-confidence in what God can do through us. Being a person who believes that greater works can happen through you will give your life a boost of energy that will enable you to fulfill the potential, purpose and plan of God. Greater works are not for others to perform. We all can be more, do more and create more. Greater is coming through you.

education digestDr. Tim Tooten, Sr.

“For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” – (Luke 19:10)In recent years, the “Black Lives Matter” movement has dominated national and international headlines. According to the organization’s website, it’s a chapter-based national organization working for the validity of black life. The group, “Black Lives Matter,” was created in 2012 after Trayvon Martin’s accused murderer, George Zimmerman, was acquitted in the death of the 17-year old Florida teenager. The group says its goal is to broaden the conversation around violence to include all of the ways in which black people are intentionally left powerless at the hands of the state and in particular law enforcement. In response to protests associated with other incidents around the country, some groups have coined similar names ending with the word “matter.” I want to add to the conversation of what I believe matters from a spiritual perspective. I’d like to introduce you to “Lost Lives Matter.” My newly formed ministry focus is based on one passage of scripture, Luke 19:10, it reads, “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.” As a Christian and a pastor, it is my passion and I believe my responsibility to diligently try and reach the lost for Christ. Now, when I say lost, I mean persons who do not have a personal relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. I can usually identify a lost person. They often reveal themselves through an extended conversation. At that point, I ask for God’s direction in trying to lead them to confess to Jesus Christ. For me, it’s personal. Here’s why. I can remember when I was lost and blinded from the truth of what it meant to fully commit my life to Jesus. As one looks throughout the Bible there is a pattern of Jesus intentionally

reaching out to the lost. The acceptance of his life-saving message put them on the path to eternal life. Their lives were transformed just from being in His presence. I am drawn to a series of parables recorded in the 15th chapter of the gospel of Luke. A parable is an earthly story with a heavenly meaning. In response to religious leaders who criticized him for spending time with sinners, Jesus shared parables in an attempt to open up their understanding. The first deals with a shepherd who leaves 99 of his sheep in order to find the lost one. In another instance, Jesus shares the story of a woman who loses a precious and valuable coin. She cleans her entire house until she finds it. The third and final story regarding things lost deals with a wasteful son who asks his father for his inheritance. He leaves home but soon returns after losing it all in the world. The conclusion in each of these parables is connected to a celebration. In the case of the lost sheep, the shepherd calls friends and neighbors to help him celebrate. A celebration is also shared with the woman who finds her lost coin. In the final parable the wasteful son returns home, asks for his father’s forgiveness and is given a celebration. Jesus shares with his listeners that the angels in heaven celebrate when a person who is lost becomes found. As I try and reach lost lives, I anticipate the celebration that will take place, not only in the here and now, but in the courts of heaven. Join me today in declaring that “Lost Lives Matter.” Dr. Tim Tooten, Sr. is an Emmy-Award winning television reporter with WBAL-TV (NBC) in Baltimore, Maryland. He’s also the pastor and founder of Harvest Christian Ministries in Baltimore County, Maryland.

word of encouragement

In Trust [email protected]

In Numbers Chapter 13, God told Moses to send out a leader from each of the twelve tribes of Israel to spy out the land that He had promised their forefathers. They went and spied out the land and saw that it was indeed as God said it was -- “We went to the land to which you sent us and, oh! It does flow with milk and honey! Just look at this fruit!” However ten of the spies came back with a bad report -- “the only thing”. The “only thing” being there were giants in the land. It was not only that the descendents of Anak or the Amalekites were giants; it was also the fact that the Israelites had a wrong perception of themselves and of God. There are several meanings of perception, one of which is “a mental image” and another “consciousness” [the quality or state of being aware especially of something within oneself]. They perceived the giants as threats and felt within themselves that they were like grasshoppers and that the giants perceived them as grasshoppers. After the death of Moses, Joshua is being prepared by God to take the Israelites into the promise land. Joshua secretly sends out two spies to once again spy out the land. They went to the home of Rahab, the harlot, who hid them in the roof of her house. In Joshua 2:8-11, Rehab spoke to the spies before they went to sleep that night. Her words to them were, “I know that GOD has given you the land. We're all afraid. Everyone in the country feels hopeless. We heard how GOD dried up the waters of the Red Sea before you when you left Egypt and what he did to the two Amorite kings east of the Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom you put under a holy curse and destroyed. We heard it and our hearts sank. We all had the wind knocked out of us. And all because of you, you and GOD, your God, God of the heavens above and God of the earth below.” So here it is, while, the ten spies perceived themselves as grasshoppers, the people living in the promise land were even more afraid of the children of Israel. In other words, their perception of themselves as grasshoppers prohibited them from entering into the

promise land – a land promised by God flowing “with milk and honey”. What has God promised to you, that you are allowing your perception to interfere with the promise? (1) God may have told you that you are going to start your own ministry, and/or business – and in His timing you will. (2) He may have told you that your marriage will be restored; your relationship with your children is reconcilable – and in His timing you will. (3) God may have even told you that you will smile again, sing, dance, run and even laugh again – and in His timing you will.Don’t allow what has happened in the past to cause you to miss out on what God is trying to do in your life right now. God wants to use you mightily to show forth His glory and love for all mankind in the earth. While your adversary, the devil is showing you mental pictures of failure and defeat, know that you will receive all that God has promised to you. Again, I repeat, you will have that ministry, business, relationships, etc. Yes, you will smile again, you will love again, you are already healed and you will receive the manifestation -- if you would only believe and stand on God’s promises. I encourage you today to not allow your perception to cause you to shy away from the promises God has made to you. He has already blessed you in the spiritual realm so that you can be a blessing and make an impact for Him in the natural realm.Prayer: Father, in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, I take hold of the promises that You have given to me and choose this day to stand until I see the manifestations of them, amen.

GOD spoke to Moses: “Send men to scout out the country of Canaan that I am giving to the People of Israel. Send one man from each ancestral tribe, each one a tried-and-true leader in the tribe.” So Moses sent them off from the Wilderness of Paran at the command of GOD. All of them were leaders in Israel, one from each tribe. We went to the land to which you sent us and, oh! It does flow with milk and honey! Just look at this fruit! The only thing is that the people who live there are fierce, their cities are huge and well fortified. Worse yet, we saw descendants of the giant Anak. Amalekites are spread out in the Negev; Hittites, Jebusites, and Amorites hold the hill country; and the Canaanites are established on the Mediterranean Sea and along the Jordan.” Caleb interrupted, called for silence before Moses and said, “Let's go up and take the land—now. We can do it.” But the others said, “We can't attack those people; they're way stronger than we are.” They spread scary rumors among the People of Israel. They said, “We scouted out the land from one end to the other—it's a land that swallows people whole. Everybody we saw was huge. Why, we even saw the Nephilim giants (the Anak giants come from the Nephilim). Alongside them we felt like grasshoppers. And they looked down on us as if we were grasshoppers.” [Read Numbers 13:1-33 The Message Bible]

Dear reader.“Enjoy this fresh perspective from Lauren Sims of John Bevere's book Good or God. Grab a copy and let us know if it was as impactful for you as it was for her.” –Brandie

Good or GodBy John Bevere

Outside of the Bible I don’t think I have ever encountered a book that housed the tangible power of the truth of God’s word in such a way that I either sat and wept as I read it or threw the book down and fell flat on my face in repentance and worshipful awe of the Lord like I did as I read through John Bevere’s latest book, Good or God. The insight and power housed in the 264 pages of this book contains what I believe our culture needs to spark a mass revival and return of God’s people back to His heart and His way for our lives. Walk with me for a moment. In our society we usually live life from one of two sides of the playing field, basing all of our decisions on the basis of is this right or wrong, good or bad. The first thing that Bevere does is introduce us to the simple yet easily forgotten fact that just because something is good does not mean that it is right or beneficial for us, and beyond that just because it is good doesn’t mean it’s GOD. He introduces a third and exceedingly higher way of living and implores us to begin to hold all we do to the God standard of good, which is so counter culture, rubbing up against even what many of us would call “Christ” like behavior. He cunningly calls our attention to the hot topics of our faith, the matters of holiness, grace, and obedience and shows that without an intentional effort of leaving those areas out we fall into living a “good” life

John Bevere and his wife Lisa are the founders of Messenger International. A minster and bestselling author, John delivers messages of uncompromising truth with boldness and passion. His desire is to support the local church and resource leaders regardless of location, language or financial position. To this end, his resources have been translated into over 90 languages, and millions of copies

have been given away to pastors and leaders worldwide. When he’s home John tries to convince Lisa to take up golf and spends time with his four sons, daughter-in-law, and grandbabies.

About the AuthorJohn Bevere

that is void of the presence of God and consequently ineffective. This book will cause you to call your own life and motives into question. It is a magnifying tool that houses just the right

combination of correction laced with love and grace that enables change. In my favorite chapter of the book, chapter 13, Bevere walks readers through the eye opening truth that without the Spirit of the Fear of the Lord on our lives we are lost and left “loving a fictitious Jesus [that] doesn’t give us the power to keep the words spoken by the real Jesus Christ”. Bevere uses scripture after scripture to show what the a healthy fear of the lord will produce in our lives while gracefully showing that God’s desire is to pour Himself into us so that we can live the way He intended us to. Bevere effortlessly brings attention to the fact that God cannot pour his spirit into dirty vessels

and because so many have fallen into the “good” life, a life lived at best straddling the fence, there is a deficit of light filled vessels in the earth, a lack of truth that allows lawlessness and wickedness to abound. In one paragraph he boldly states, “Without the holy fear of the Lord, we cannot truly know God. Moses knew Him intimately. God ’s voice and ways were clear to him. Israel only knew God by His acts-the way He answered their prayers. To Israel, God ’s voice was thunder. Moses was permitted to be close to His presence. Israel was told to go back to their tents and play church.” This book answers the hard questions and brings our attention to the cracks in our foundation that can keep us locked out of the life God has for us. It is both a strong rebuke and a power packed punch of mercy in one. Read it first for yourself, and then grab a copy for the “super-saint”, the backslidden friend, and the doubter who isn’t sure that Jesus is what they want for their life. This is meat that needs to get down deep into the hearts of many, a tool of empowerment that will help us fight the good fight. The sting is worth it, enjoy.

Earnest PughHas decided to leave his position as Pastor of Worship at Houston's Lighthouse Church to pursue some of the dreams he has that have been lying dormant in his heart for years. One of them being to start a nonprofit organization titled "Vets Rock" that will assist Women Combat Veterans. Pugh says, "Women are the most underserved population of US Veterans." He actually served as an

active duty soldier for 15 years. He is also prepping for a 50 city tour as he celebrates his 50th birthday this year in November and 20 years in the gospel music industry. Pugh had this to say, "I've literally been employed in some musical capacity at a church since I was 18 years. Now, I feel like it’s time for a shifting of focus to impacting our community in other ways than just pulpit ministry. I'm ready to put my hands to the plow and make a global impact.” Stay in touch with Earnest www.earnestpugh.com.

LeAndria JohnsonHas released a new single titled "Better Days" that is currently available at all digital media outlets on her new label RCA Inspiration, she's no longer on the roster of Matthew Knowles’ (Beyoncé’s dad) label Music World. Now, I know everyone has heard, seen, or read on her social media and mass media, the statement she made regarding her "fasting from alcohol for 30 days". Various artists retweeted

and commented, lending their support and prayers, i.e. Yolanda Adams who retweeted and said, "Rally around our beautiful sis and pray her victory in Jesus name! God is with you and so are we." So many mixed views, perceptions, and opinions on her transparency, public displays and unorthodox methods of evangelism not just as an artist but she’s a pastor as well. Let’s keep her in prayer.

Zebullon EllisI have supported Zebullon since Sunday's Best! I have been a fan of his ministry from the gate! He has a voice that ministers with such an anointing and as diverse as he is vocally, hearing him even sing mainstream music I'm in awe! He's an actor, singer, musician, Levite, comedian, fashion icon, you name it; he's a walking enterprise! I've watched his journey and I've been in full anticipation of

what’s to come for Zebullon; Sunday's Best set him up for the world to see. He released his single and EP, do yourself a favor and go grab it! The EP is titled, "Lift" it will bless you! Congrats Zeb!!!

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers everywhere! Especially my mom Pastor Sandy Johnson, and My Granny Mother Vena Jackson these two are amazing to my son and I, and

I can't imagine what my life would be like without them. God just knew! Let’s keep in our prayers those who have lost their moms, don't know their moms, even those who have lost their children and the time feels more like grief than celebration. I pray that God fills that void for them and that someone does something thoughtful and kind, in word and or deed to help them. Til next month you can catch "IN With Miss Ericka J" every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 5:30pm, on iheart radio, Heaven 600, www.heaven600.com, or 102.7HD2.

TonexNow I'm sure unless you really follow his career that's a name you haven't heard in gospel music for some time. However, being the fan that I am of his work as an artist period I have followed his career and work in every genre this musical genius has put his hands to. There is no question. The anointing that is on Tonex's gifts is undeniable. He recently sang

at the Homegoing Celebration for Elder Daryl Coley, he ministered "When Sunday Comes" and OMG he absolutely nailed it!! What better timing to highlight his "COME BACK"; he has a new project coming out titled "OUT THE BOX 2" the sequel to his last project "OUT THE BOX 1". Tonex had this to say about his upcoming project, “The same man behind the original, is the same man behind this one. No one knew where I was going the first time and I doubt even with explanation that anyone could fathom what's about to happen." I would have to agree with him on that! He currently has a new single available at all digital media outlets, titled "Apostolic" and OH BOY, y’all ain’t ready! LOL in the lyrics he says, “Underneath it all, I'm still apostolic”, you gotta go check it out.

BeBe WinansIs gearing up for the World Premiere of "Born for This: The BeBe Winans Story", it’s the true story of BeBe's journey to fame. It will premiere at Alliance Stage, and will be coming to Washington, DC at the Arena Stage, July 1-Aug 28. BeBe had this to say, "When you're a teenager you don't think your life is being recorded for others to learn from, or be healed by or better yet, find strength from

your fears and failures." The production will include past and present music from The Winans Family as well as BeBe and CeCe. The leading cast members of course are Winans family members Juan Winans and Deborah Joy Winans who portray BeBe and CeCe.

The Christian life will not always be easy. While enjoying the peace of a personal relationship with Christ, we are also fraught with the myriad challenges of the human condition. Because May is Mental Health Awareness Month it is both fitting and necessary to focus on a very real, yet less talked about issue within the African American faith community. Although we have become increasingly open to discussing and effectively addressing the realities of mental illness impacting those in our churches and communities, let’s look closer…

POINT NUMBER ONE: A CONDITION THAT WE DID NOT CHOOSE Having been reared in the African American classical Pentecostal tradition, there seemed to be an unspoken, sometimes spoken, devaluation of mental illness. Perhaps even more concerning was the use of scripture to reinforce these ideas. For example, because we should be anxious for nothing (Philippians 4:6), anxiety, therefore, was [subjectively judged to be] not of God. Albeit subtle, this assertion, coupled with The Lord wanting us to have life more abundantly (John 10:10), which was erroneously interpreted as the happy life, inadvertently degraded those experiencing the reality of being Christian, yet living with mental illness. As a people who have historically held its faith in high regard, it has been especially challenging to address mental illness within the African American community. In other words, rather than being encouraged to participate in counseling or therapy with a qualified professional, African Americans, in general, have often been admonished to pray about their issues. As a result, many have asked themselves: Can I be saved and depressed? Can I be saved and have an anxiety disorder? Can I be saved and struggle with mental illness? Through my personal growth process, I have realized that the answer to these questions is undeniably yes! In other words, we can be saved and crazy (smile). If Christians can have cancer, diabetes, and hypertension, we can also be depressed. Further, while some experience these conditions as a consequence of their choices (e.g., poor diet and exercise), others were born with such infirmities. The same holds true for mental illness: many are faced with managing the life-long course of a condition that stems from biological and genetic factors. Further still, what about those who were victims of various types of abuse that affected their mental health? Brothers, regardless of what has led to your mental illness, be encouraged because you have been fearfully and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14) in the image of God (Genesis 1:27) and nothing—not even mental illness—can separate you from His love (Romans 8:39)!

POINT NUMBER TWO: MEN AND MENTAL HEALTH Several years ago, I was working with a male high school student

who was experiencing significant mental health challenges. One of the most difficult aspects of helping the student, however, involved working with his father who felt strongly that his son’s condition was less serious than it was and he instead needed to man up. For an impressionable adolescent who is particularly vulnerable to his father’s approval and acceptance, effective treatment necessarily involved reshaping the father’s perspective on mental health. Similarly, brothers who live with the reality of mental illness need to know that they are not weak—they’re human. Compared to women, men are less likely to verbalize their feelings. This, in addition to the fallacious thinking that mental illness is associated with weakness, provides some explanation for why men don’t seek the help they need. For these reasons, it is incumbent upon churches and communities to create safe spaces for men to express their innermost emotions. In the same manner that schools are often the point of access for a variety of services for children and families,

it is more than appropriate for churches to adopt a full service model and provide the much-needed supports to meet the

spiritual, physical, social, emotional, and mental health needs of its parishioners and surrounding community.

POINT NUMBER THREE: MY GRACE ISSUFFICIENT Why was I made this way? Why did God allow this to happen to me? Why doesn’t God take this away from me? Without a doubt, these are some of the most pressing questions for those living with the reality of being a Christian with mental illness. While I don’t know the answers to these questions, I find comfort and strength in II Corinthians 12:7-12. Written by the Apostle Paul, this passage provides a window into the reality of his human condition juxtaposed against his

spiritual maturity. Although we do not know (and ultimately it’s not important) the specifics

of his thorn in the flesh, we know that it was inconvenient. Uncomfortable. Painful. It was

a distraction that sought to discourage Paul from fulfilling his purpose. But although he prayed, and

prayed, and prayed for The Lord to remove this nuisance from him, the answer was, no. But more importantly, The

Lord’s response also included what He would do instead. In other words, Although I am not going to remove this from you, my grace is sufficient—it’s enough—for you. Although you want this seemingly terrible thing to be taken away, what you really need is my grace—supernatural strength to endure. Brothers, have you considered that your mental illness could be your thorn in the flesh—something that The Lord will not remove but whose grace is strong enough to sustain you? Like Paul, The Lord doesn’t always take away our inconveniences because He is developing our Christian character (Galatians 5:22-23). And, as we are accomplishing great things for God, the thorn in the flesh reminds us that He is the one who chose us: not because we are perfect but because He can use anyone because He is perfect.
