Grace Episcopal Cathedral Topeka, Kansas
November 2016 Vol. 90, No. 11
Dear Friends,
It is my pleasure to
announce the
addition of the
Rev’d Casey
Rohleder to the staff
of Grace Cathedral.
Casey is a graduate of the Bishop
Kemper School for Ministry (BKSM)
and was ordained to the priesthood
this year in the Diocese of Western
Kansas. She and her family moved to
Topeka in September. (You can read
all about the Rohleder family in this
month’s New Member Spotlight
article.)
Casey will be a non-stipendiary
(non-paid) staff member, so she will
have limited responsibilities here in
order to do paid supply work and
pursue her part-time position with
BKSM. For the present time, Mother
Casey’s basic responsibilities include
preaching on fifth Sundays and
serving as celebrant at 10:30 services
every 3-4 weeks. Mother Casey has
also expressed an interest in ministry
opportunities outside the Cathedral
and in the larger community.
Check out Casey’s profile on the
staff page of Grace Cathedral’s
website (GraceCathedralTopeka.org).
Please welcome Casey, her husband,
Eric, and daughter Carolyn as new
members to our Cathedral
community!
—I’ll see you in church,
Steve+

October 30 - November 20
The Journey: Walking the Road to
Bethlehem — Pastor Pejakovich will
lead this pre-Advent program. Follow
along with Mary and Joseph as they
journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem,
and to the manger where the newborn
King will lie. A video segment of scenes from the Holy Land will be
followed by class discussion on the theological themes to be explored—a
great preparation for the Advent and Christmas seasons.
November 27 - December 18
Advent Bible Study: Learning Mission from the Gospel of Matthew Our Presiding Bishop Michael Curry said “personal service and public
witness and advocacy is what we (Episcopalians) do; that's the Jesus
Movement.” Join Deacon Flynn this Advent to study the Gospel of
Matthew. We may discover just how to be the Jesus Movement.
Jim Snyder, a longtime member of Grace Cathedral, was extremely generous in his lifetime
and left a significant gift from his estate for the Cathedral. Part of that gift was used to
purchase a new boiler for the church after our former 50 year-old boiler died last year. Now,
with some improvements being made to the library to accommodate the combining of the
Cathedral Library and the Bishop Kemper School for Ministry (BKSM) library, the vestry
voted to use an additional amount of Jim’s gift for this purpose, and to name the library in
Jim’s memory. Leroy Dagg is volunteering his time to get our library in order and to cull out
many of our out-of-date books to make way for some of the BKSM books. Additional
bookshelves will be added to accommodate the combined, larger library. A glass wall will also
be added along the south side of the library to separate it from normal pass through traffic,
creating a quieter and more private reading / meeting space. We hope to have this work
completed by the end of the year.
Jim Snyder Memorial Library
The two windows above the Common
Room doors leading to the Cathedral
have been purchased as memorials by
the families of Charles and Billye
June Bray, and Chuck Greene. The
window designs will be the seals of
the Cathedral and the Diocese. We
hope to have these installed by the
first of the year.
To see the color renderings of these
windows, please refer to the
Cathedral Chimes on our website:
www.GraceCathedralTopeka.org.

purple tab across the bottom of the

Stephen Ministry
is an important
way of
expressing
Christian caring
at the Cathedral.
In addition to
pastoral care provided by clergy, we
care and support is offered by a
trained group of lay volunteers called
Stephen Ministers.
Have you ever thought about
being part of this ministry? Have
people told you that you have a
caring spirit? Do you know someone
who fits this description? If so, why
not act on the nudging of the Holy
Spirit, contact the Stephen Minister
Team Leader, and complete an
application to join a group of very
special people?
We are now recruiting for the
next class to be trained, beginning on
February 1, 2017. As before, the
training will include the
congregations of First United
Methodist Church, 1st Lutheran
Church, 1st Presbyterian Church,
Lowman United Methodist Church,
and the Cathedral. To learn more,
contact Karel Ramsey (232-1452).

DAUGHTERS OF THE KING Daughters of the King will meet Saturday, November 5, at 9:30 a.m. in the Bubb Room. A
discussion of An Altar in the World will conclude our book study. All women of the
Cathedral are invited and welcomed to be part of DOK. If you have questions, please email
Suzanne DeWeese at [email protected].
FIRST MEETING for CONVERSATION GROUPS If you have signed up to join the new Conversation Groups, the first meeting will take place at 5:30 p.m. on
Wednesday, November 2, in the Parish Hall. Conversation groups of 7-8 people meet in member’s homes once a
month through the Spring for food or refreshments and a particular conversation topic. It’s a great way to get to know
other parishioners on a more personal level and newer members are especially encouraged to join. If you haven’t yet
signed up but would like to join a group, please contact the Cathedral office as soon as possible.
FUNDS for HURRICANE MATTHEW Collections from our special offering and a grant from our Outreach special projects fund totaled $1,000. This will be
sent to Episcopal Relief and Development for distribution in the Caribbean and eastern seaboard of the United States.
ERD is providing hundreds of thousands of dollars (through church donations) to help with relief. A special interest is
directed to Haiti, where the death toll and destruction were so high and where so many have so little. Please keep all
the victims of Hurricane Matthew in your prayers.
LET’S HELP LUNCH, NOVEMBER 30 The next opportunity to volunteer for the Let’s Help luncheon is Wednesday, November 30. Volunteers from the
Cathedral are responsible for preparing and serving lunch to Let's Help staff and clients. We are also responsible for
providing desserts such as brownies, cookies, sheet cakes, as well as fruit—apples, oranges and bananas. Come help
with this important ministry. Please notify Liz Blakely at [email protected] or 785 273 5263.
Grace Cathedral’s children are off to a great start with
Sunday School and Children's Chapel! In Sunday
School, we have been exploring many of Jesus’
parables, and in our Children’s Chapel “Holy Moly”
series, we have been learning stories from the Old
Testament this fall, beginning with Abraham and Sarah,
and ending in November with one of our favorites,
David & Goliath.

Deacon Don Chubb received the
Bishop’s Chair Award in honor of
40 years of service in the deaconate
on Sunday, October 2. Dean
Lipscomb presented the rocking
chair with the seal of the Diocese of
Kansas engraved on it during the
10:30 a.m. service.
“Being a Deacon is mainly
about service ministry,” said Don,
noting that many people are only
familiar with the duties that deacons
perform during Sunday services,
such as reading the Gospel, leading
the Prayers of the People, and
assisting with the Eucharist.
Don recalled that his first focus
was on youth ministry. He served for
25 years as youth leader and Sunday
School teacher. He was also a leader
of the Cathedral’s Boy Scout Troop.
“I got to know the Cathedral
youth and their families very well,”
he said. “Today, when we pray for
those memorialized by flowers on
the altar, I think, ‘Hey, I knew that
person. One of the kids or grandkids
was in my Sunday school class.’”
In addition, Deacon Chubb’s
duties have included visiting people
in hospitals or at Midland Care
Hospice, ministries which continue
to occupy his time.
Don became the youngest
deacon in the Diocese of Kansas on
September 26, 1976, having been
ordained not long after the church
lowered the minimum age from 40
to 30. Bishop Edward Clark Turner
performed the laying on of hands in
the Great Hall, where services were
being held due to the Cathedral Fire
of 1975.
Since then, he has also served
under Bishops Richard F. Grein,
William Smalley, and Dean
Wolfe. At Grace Cathedral, he
served under Deans Skerry Olsen,
Robert Shahan, Marc Lee, Interim
Provost Robert Terrill, and Dean
Lipscomb.
“It has been a joy to work with
other Cathedral deacons over the
years,” he said. They have all had
their particular strengths and
ideas.” These have included Deacons
Joe Thompson, Keith Akins, Bobbie
Barber, Bill Wolfe, Barbara Gibson
and currently, Anne Flynn.
Don has also had a career in
business, starting with the Neon
Tube Light Company, of which he
eventually became owner. He sold
the business at age 50 and
subsequently became a business
broker for Griffith and Blair. He
currently serves on the Board of
Directors for Guggenheim Mutual
Funds.
He has also been very active in
the Topeka community and has built
a reputation as a storyteller about
interesting and amusing events in the
city’s (as well as the Cathedral’s)
history. He is a past president of the
Shawnee Historical Society
and also served on the
Executive Committee of the
Kansas State Historical
Society. He has been on the
board of Midland Care
Hospice, past president and
director of the Jayhawk
Council of Boy Scouts, past
vice president of the Chamber
of Commerce, and past
president of the Library
Foundation.
We extend our congratulations
and thanks to Don for his
many years of outstanding
service.

About the window… The stained glass window on this
month’s cover is located on the
right side of the altar in St. Mary’s
Chapel and survived the 1975 fire.
It depicts Noah giving thanks after
the flood (Genesis 8:20) and was
given in gratitude to God for the
safe return from WWII of Air
Force pilot Charles Benedict
Kilmer by his parents.
We welcome Casey and
Eric Rohleder, and their four
year old daughter, Carolyn, to
our Cathedral community!
Casey was ordained to the
priesthood this past July in
the Diocese of Western
Kansas after completing the
program of Presbyteral
Studies at the Bishop Kemper
School of Ministry. She now
serves as Priest Associate
here at Grace Cathedral, as
well as filling in as a supply
priest to churches throughout
the diocese and beyond.
Casey is also the
Communications and
Outreach Specialist for
BKSM. She holds master and bachelor degrees in German.
The Rohleders come to us from St. Michael’s in Hays, the result of Eric’s
appointment as Director of State Veteran Cemeteries for the Kansas
Commission on Veteran Affairs Office in Topeka and also serves as
KCVAO’s IT Director. Eric is a 22-year veteran of the U.S. Air Force, holds a
Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Management and is currently studying for an
MBA at Baker University. In addition to Carolyn, Eric has two adult children,
Megan and Joe, from a previous marriage.
The couple enjoys gardening, visiting microbreweries and checking out
area attractions. It is not unusual for the whole family to jump into the car and
explore the back roads on the weekend! Carolyn likes art, ballet, and
gymnastics, with a special interest in becoming an American Ninja Warrior.
Casey and Eric were both raised in the Catholic Church, and attended
Catholic schools. Casey said she found the Episcopal Church in 2004 after
moving to Hays, and Eric found the Episcopal Church in 2008 after he found
her! They have been married for seven years.
For Casey, the Episcopal Church felt like home from the start. She loved
the liturgy and the people at St. Michael’s, Hays. As she learned more about
the church’s history, theology and structure, she knew it was the place for her.
She felt a call to the priesthood from a very young age, and the more she
became involved in the Episcopal Church, the stronger the pull became. She
served as the lay leader of her small congregation in Hays for several years in
the absence of a priest, and has served the Diocese of Western Kansas in a
number of ways, including the Commission for Youth and Young Adults and
the Commission on Ministry. She said they are all thrilled to be part of Grace
Cathedral!

Cross Rescue
As you walk into the Foyer between
the Cathedral and the Common
Room, you will notice something
new. The large cross on the wall is
from St. Christopher’s Church in
Wichita, where it hung suspended
above their altar. That parish recently
closed and so, with help from Canon
Torey Lightcap and Cathedral mem-
ber Norm Nellis, we managed to
“rescue” the cross and give it a home
here. Thanks to Torey for finding
workers to remove the cross from St.
Christopher’s, to Norm for arranging
transportation for the cross from
Wichita to here, and to parishioner
Phil Dittmer for hanging the cross in
the Foyer.
