Basic Operation

To operate the unit, press the power button once. The manufacturer’s logo will be displayed after approximately 3 seconds, followed by the “Satellite Distribution” screen with a text box in the lower part of the screen which reads; “GPS Searching” and flashing “Please Wait!”. Once the unit has located the appropriate Satellites, the text box will change to “GPS Ready! OK”. Depending on conditions this can take from a few seconds to a couple of minutes. Pressing either the Enter, up, or down buttons will change the display to the Map screen. Up or down selection will toggle the field in the lower part of the screen between the following:

• Latitude and longitude • Elapsed time • Local time • Speed • Altitude The Main Menu can now be accessed via the Enter button to enter the Map sub menu and then

select the Exit key. Submenus are accessed by highlighting the required submenu via the up or down button and using the Enter button to make your selection.

The Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) is fitted with a backlight which is toggled on or off via the Light button. Please note that use of the backlight will reduce the expected battery life.

1. Satellite distribution and signal intensity. From the Main Menu, select “Satellites”. This will bring up the Satellite Distribution and

Signal Intensity screen. This screen consists of 2 circles at the top of the screen which indicate Satellite distribution. The large circle represents the horizon, the small circle represents 45 degrees elevation from the horizon, and the centre point represents zenith, or 90 degrees elevation. At the top of the large circle is the letter “N” to indicate north. Satellites are represented as squares located on the graph, corresponding to the User’s position relative to the Satellites position above the Earth. Each square has an ID number associated with the Satellite it represents. The lower part of the screen indicates Satellite Signal intensity and is represented by a figure on the left hand side showing the Satellite ID number. On the right hand side is a value from 0 to 99, representing signal intensity. Also a bar graph in between the 2 figures provides a visual comparison to signal intensity between the various Satellites. Note: 1. This mark on all screens indicates satellite signal intensity. 2. BT This mark on indicates Bluetooth function enabled. 3. After initial power on, the Satellites appear centralized at “N “. This indicates unlock

condition. Once the unit has locked in the Satellites, a text box displaying “GPS” will appear on the right hand side of the screen.

4. Satellite distribution squares may appear overlapped when there is limited bearing and elevation discrimination between them.

5. 2D or 3D indicates a 2 or 3 dimensional fix. (i.e. Accurate for either Latitude and Longitude or Latitude, Longitude, and Altitude (accurate to + / – 100M)

• Altitude or height above sea level at Current Position. This value is shown either in

meters or feet. Selection is made via the up or down button.

• Local Time is received as Greenwich Mean Time (GMT). The local time difference can be compensated for (up to + or – 12 hours in half hour intervals) and saved in the Options sub menu. Once the compensation has been input, the time displayed will correspond to the Local Time (e.g. AEST = GMT +10 hours)

• Speed indicates user speed. The value is shown either in KM/H or MI/H. Selection is

made via the up or down button.

The purpose of this mode is to show and record user movement at a set sample rate which allows the user to accurately return to the start point of a journey. The current position marker moves across the screen relative to a fixed starting point and the fixed North pointer. (i.e. the North pointer remains fixed and only provides a reference point similar to that of a standard map or chart.) The lower screen provides Latitude/Longitude; Altitude; Speed; Local Time; and Elapsed Time, selectable via the up or down buttons.

• Operate record mode:

1. From the “ROUTE” submenu select “FILE NAME” 2. Select a Route from the list

Warning: 1. Before you begin, make sure that the contents of the package includes the items listed on the

GPSmartBT box. If any items are missing or damaged, contact your dealer. 2. The time taken to fix your position will be longer than usual, the first time you use the GPSmartBT

receiver. 3. Any application that you run on your PC that accepts NMEA version 2.1 messages and Baud rate

38400 will be able to receive that information from your GPSmartBT. 4. Be careful and double check your connections before applying power to the external device as an

improper connection could damage the GPSmartBT and void its warranty. Please refer to the GPSmartBT accessories.

5. If you choose to use the GPSmartBT in a vehicle, it is the sole responsibility of the owner/operator of the GPSmartBT to secure the GPS unit so that it will not cause damage or personal injury in the event of an accident. Do not mount the GPSmartBT over airbag panels or in a place where the driver or passengers are likely to have an impact with it in an accident or collision.

6. If you choose to use the GPSmartBT in a vehicle, it is the sole responsibility of the vehicles operator to operate the vehicle in a safe manner. Maintain full surveillance of all driving conditions at all times, and never become distracted by the GPSmartBT to the exclusion of safe operating practices. It is unsafe to operate the GPSmartBT while you are driving. Failure by the operator of a vehicle equipped with a GPSmartBT to pay full attention to operating the vehicle and road conditions while the vehicle is in motion could result in an accident or collision with property damage and personal injury.

7. Do not allow the GPSmartBT to be immersed in liquid. Make sure batteries and compartment are dry before using. Also remove the batteries from your GPSmartBT if you do not expect to use it for several months. Be sure to observe the correct polarity when inserting the batteries.

8. The government of the United States operates the Global Positioning System (GPS), and is solely responsible for its accuracy and maintenance.
