Ahmed Al Khalifa, Minister of State forAmiri Court A ffairs and Chairman of theNational Wildlife ProtectionCommittee, GPIC held on Sunday 11 t hJune, 2000 a ceremony marking thelaunch of the first extension of theC o m p a n y ’s Charity Fish Farm.

At the beginning of the ceremony,H.E. Shaikh Abdul Rahman bin A b d u l l aAl Khalifa, Undersecretary of theMinistry of Labour and Social A ff a i r sand Deputy Chairman of theCommittee for Monitoring the Issueand Implementation of Decisions con-cerning Fisheries, delivered a speech. In his speech , he said he was pleasedto participate in the launch of the firstextension of the GPIC Fish Farm. Hesaid he considered this Project as ameans of supporting fisheries by lend-ing assistance to the National FishCulture Centre, which is the authority incharge of fish breeding activities andreleasing live fish in the natural marineareas or the newly created artificial corals.

He also praised the Edict issued by His Highness ShaikhKhalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, Prime Minister for the formationof a committee in charge of monitoring the issue and imple-mentation of decisions for protection of fisheries, which com-mittee has been formed by the authorities concerned with pro-tection and exploitation of marine wealth, and is beginning toyield fruits. The positive results that have emerged representthe outcome of the efforts made by the Committee. Of partic-ular interest is the issue of co-operation and co-ordination inapplying and implementing the Fisheries. Law by the execu-tive authority. Such results include, curbing illegal fishing, ban-ning the use of harmful fishing gear and banning the catchingand marketing of small fish. The committee is also responsi-ble for enhancing awareness through the media of the impor-tance of preserving the environment and fisheries that are avital natural source of food.

Concluding his speech, he thanked Gulf PetrochemicalIndustries Company for its continuous efforts to improve andraise fish stocks in Bahrain’s territorial waters. He also urgedall the local economic sectors, to follow the good example ofGPIC by supporting one of the vital projects that have a posi-tive impact upon fisheries not only in the short term but also inthe long run. Such projects are both vital and essential fordeveloping and safeguarding fisheries.

Then, Mr. Mustafa Al Sayed, GPIC General Manager deliv-ered a speech in which he reiterated the strong interest andsupport for all the activities contributing to the preservation ofthe Bahrain environment. He said GPIC is fully aware of thesignificance of safeguarding the environment in Bahrain. Ithas always sought to comply with the regulations of theEnvironment Authority and its applications. This inturn result-ed in the Company’s success in obtaining the ISO 14001Award in 1999, which is the first international environmentalachievement given to a Bahraini company.

He reaffirmed in his speech that the Company stronglybelieves that it is an integral part of the texture of the society. With the above in mind and in order to underline its national

and social role, the Company sponsored, the Fish FarmProject in co-operation with the Fisheries Directorate, Ministryof Agriculture, the for breeding various species of Bahrainifish. This Project was launched in November, 1996. The aimsof this Project are enrichment of marine life, increasingB a h r a i n ’s fish stocks and informing the society that industrialdevelopment does not conflict with the safety of the environ-ment if environmental laws are complied with to ensure itssafety and security.

He added that this unique fish farm is located in the south-ern part of the Complex near the water inlet used for coolingthe plants’ operations. The farm has more than 10,000 sea-breams which is a rare kind of fish. When brought to the farm, this species used to weigh a mere 60 grammes but now eachfish weighs about 800 grammes, This is evidence that the fishgrew in the proper and natural environment and this is part ofthe efforts made by GPIC for protecting the environment.

He said that the launch of the first extension to the fish farmis planned to increase the Farm’s area by double so that it willhave a capacity of 20,000 fish. This is a demonstration of thec o m p a n y ’s desire to increase its contribution to backingwildlife in Bahrain. In addition, we will celebrate reaping thefruits of success by harvesting part of this season’s crop orproduction to be distributed to the needy families. The remain-ing fish will be released once again into the sea for reproduc-tion purposes.

M r. Al Sayed reaffirmed his loyalty to the Bahrain leadershipdue to the current situations, hoping to grant our belovednation security and stability.
