PBS’s all-new summer series Time Team America bringsviewers into the trenches of working archaeological digs forthree intense days — showing them what it takes to uncoverthe story of America. Premiering Wednesday, July 8 at 8PM on GPB, Time Team America descends on a new siteeach Wednesday through August 5, traveling to Roanoke Is-land, North Carolina, the swamps of South Carolina, the fieldsof rural Illinois, the canyons of Utah and the South Dakotaprairie in search of America’s roots.

Part extreme adventure, part science and part reality show, thefive-part series takes viewers deep into the trenches of Amer-ica’s most intriguing archaeological sites. In each episode, theshow’s team of top scientists has three days to uncover theburied secrets of their assigned dig. Every hour counts as theypiece together the past, using the latest technology, decades ofcombined experience and their own sharp wits. Far from thecomfort of a museum or science lab, the team faces searingheat, driving rain, alligator-infested swamps, frayed nerves andinevitable technical setbacks. Through it all, the audience peersover the shoulders of the archaeologists at work, eavesdropping

on intense conversations and sharing the rush of discovery asartifacts emerge from the ground.

Regardless of conditions or impediments, the team strives touncover critical discoveries that fill in the missing pieces ofwhat is known with the proof of what is found. A chip of potterybecomes colonial kitchenware; a slate pencil suggests a 19th-century schoolhouse; a stone projectile point indicates a13,000-year-old tool factory; and a centuries-old broken bottleleads to adventurous tales of the Wild West.

In exchange for an abundance of fascinating stories and in-triguing mystery, the chosen sites are enriched by Time TeamAmerica’s work. Many excavation sites wait years betweendiscoveries due to lack of funding, labor, expertise or equip-ment. The Time Team America cohort gives sites an inten-sive three-day boost, offering consulting from acrossdisciplines, access to the latest scanning and imaging technol-ogy, artists’ renderings, professional documentation and evena precision backhoe operator when necessary.

Are you worried about paying your mortgage in the wake of ajob loss? Are you wondering how to refinance your home loanbecause of rising interest rates on your current mortgage? Areyou worried that you may be the victim of a mortgage scam?

Georgia Public Broadcasting is addressing these questions andother concerns of Georgia citizens with special programmingthat is part of Facing The Mortgage Crisis, a national public broadcasting initiative.

In partnership with WPBA Channel 30 in Atlanta, GPB willproduce a 60-minute live television program that will be simul-cast on both stations Thursday, July 23 beginning at 8PM. In addition, the program will also be simulcast throughoutGeorgia on GPB Radio and WABE FM in Atlanta. Experts willbe standing by live to take callers’ questions and requests forinformation that relates to the current mortgage and housingcrisis. Web users of gpb.org will also be able to take part in anonline chat with experts during the broadcast on July 23.

According to the latest statistics, metro Atlanta has one of thehighest foreclosure rates in the nation and the Brunswick areahas also been severely affected. Experts predict that the situa-tion is likely to get worse before it gets better because a largepercentage of the adjustable rate mortgages haven’t evenkicked in yet. Layoffs, job loss and increasing medical costshave contributed to the current mortgage crisis.

Facing The Mortgage Crisis will examine each of thesefactors and other topics including the importance of seekinghelp early through counseling agencies such as the ConsumerCredit Counseling Service, and other HUD - approved agen-cies. People will receive practical information on loan modifi-cation and avoiding mortgage scams, as well as receiving adviceon budgeting and taking charge of your credit.

The impact of foreclosures on individual home values withincommunities has been in many cases disastrous. Facing TheMortgage Crisis will look at programs that help communi-ties, such as the Neighborhood Stabilization program and newincentives for buyers of foreclosed properties that seek to im-prove neighborhood home values.

GPB is also working with several community organizations toprovide expertise for the programming and additional re-sources for viewers, listeners and web users. Community part-ners include the Consumer Credit Counseling Service, FederalReserve Bank of Atlanta, HUD, Progressive RedevelopmentInc. and the United Way.

The Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who setout to satirize the very people and places that employed them.

In the years that followed, many of the Steps ignored the conventional wisdom ("Don't quit your day job!"), and althoughnot all of the current members of the Steps are former CapitolHill staffers, taken together the performers have worked in atotal of eighteen Congressional offices and represent 62 years ofcollective House and Senate staff experience.

Since they began, the Capitol Steps have recorded 29 albums, in-cluding their latest, “Obama Mia”. They've been featured onNBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS, and can be heard 4 times a year onNational Public Radio stations nationwide during their PoliticsTakes a Holiday radio specials.

Also, in place of the regular Consumer Call-In Show on July3rd at 3PM, GPB will offer a one-hour special Born on theFourth of July: A Popular Song Celebration of Inde-pendence Day.

Celebrate the birth and legacy of America with music from a re-cently-reissued album of duets from national icons Bing Crosbyand Louis Armstrong (whose birthday was long thought to fallon the same day as the holiday) and patriotic popular song fromNat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Paul Robeson, Peggy Lee, Mar-garet Whiting, Duke Ellington, Ray Charles and Paul Desmond. Both festive and reflective, the program is hosted by David BrentJohnson.
