Governor’s MessageContinued from Page 1 Fun Night holds a fantastic meal and lots of fun and games at “Maison LaBelle Vie Winery” and you won’t want to miss out on this night. Do not forget that some lucky Altrusan will be picked to win a Fun Night entry in 2021 in Artesia, NM. Palisade will even have an agenda of things for your spouses, other family members, or friends accompanying you, to see and do while you are at Conference; so much to see and do and I am sure they will enjoy the sites and beauty of this area. We have another decade of community service to be shared by all our Altrusa Clubs. I hope you read their newsletters to see all the great projects each club has undertaken, and visit their Facebook pages or share greetings in other ways. We all help each other in some way with ideas for projects and fundraisers and we will share these at Conferences and in our social media. You will acquire many wonderful new friendships and renew those you have already made. At the Foundation Luncheon, there will be a drawing for a “FREE” registration for the 2021 Conference in Artesia, so come one come all for a chance to win. During my Club visits and reading your wonderful newsletters, I am in amazement of the many worthwhile, wonderful projects that our clubs provide in service to our communities. I encourage you to submit an entry for Awards; you are all so deserving of an Award, please submit. e Awards criteria has been updated and made easier to follow. Don’t say “it won’t win.” You will never know unless you try. Your president will be sharing with you the information sheet Appendix K in District Shared Files that gives you a heads-up to whom and when to submit your entries. Do not forget to update your Bylaws and Policies to align with International’s. You will nd a copy of Club Bylaws on the International Website. Most of the work has already been done for you, so it is much easier to update. I’m looking forward to seeing lots of rst timers and renewing friendships with all of you in Palisade, CO. Safe travels!

“If you want to make friends, join an Altrusa Club,” was the advice that Beverly Hardy received when she moved to Starke, FL 26 years ago a er working as a special education teacher in Florida in Seminole and Marion counties. “Altrusa was a custom t for me,” Hardy remembered. “I went with it, loved it and made many wonderful friends.” Beverly is a member of Altrusa International, Inc. of Starke, FL and has served her local club on all levels. In 1999 she was Starke’s Club President. Following this she served on the District ree Board as Treasurer; Vice Governor; Governor Elect; and in 2011 became Governor of District ree. Later she served as Chair of the District ree Nominating Committee and also served on the Election Committee. In 2019, Beverly became the International President of Altrusa International, Inc. She was very attracted to Altrusa International, that grew out of the women’s su rage movement in 1917, because of its focus on developing the leadership skills of its members and improving the lives of women in the U.S. and around the world. Because of her tireless e orts in Altrusa, along with other Altrusans, so many commendable causes have been advanced and countless young people have earned scholarships and opportunities they may otherwise have missed. Hardy also volunteers with a faith-based, long-term drug rehabilitation facility. “Addiction is a sickness,” she said. “You don’t get sick overnight so you don’t get well overnight”. Addiction doesn’t recognize social class or gender; it can a ect anyone. We try to help people learn to love their sobriety so they can sustain it in the real world.” She has revealed her altruistic spirit on many other fronts to include leadership responsibilities by serving on the Board of ARC of Bradford County FL (citizens with mental handicaps); serving as Finance Chair. She served on the Board of Florida Ladies of the Elks as Chaplin. She was selected to be a member of the Eighth Judicial Circuit Nominating Commission, that help with the task of vetting names for gubernatorial appointments for County Court Judges and Circuit Judges. Recently, she was asked to serve on the Shands at Starke Hospital Board, HCAHPS, a board that focuses on the satisfaction of patient care at the hospital. Beverly’s entrepreneurial acumen as a pacesetter is also well documented. She was co-owner of her family business (Harwood Brick Company) and this experience also allowed her to observe rsthand that women in construction were not always treated well. Currently, she has played a key role in her husband’s law prac-tice doing accounting and serving as o ce manager.Maybe it was that experience, combined with Altrusa’s historical concern with the rights and status of women, which led Hardy to name Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Eleanor Roosevelt as two of her biggest inspirations or “s/heroes.” In 2018, Beverly was named as Santa Fe College, 2018 Woman of Distinction in Gainesville, FL. Asked what rewards she gets from her spirit of giving, Hardy exclaimed, “It’s wonderful! Just to be able to give makes me happy”. at’s what life’s about—not about recognition and not about being self-serving!

A set of rules is needed for any means of communication. Human intercommunication (in pairs and in small or larger groups) requires rules of protocol. Be sure to review the Conference Rules printed in the Conference program. e rules are important to the success of the meeting. Not long now we’ll join fellow Altrusans from throughout District Ten to celebrate an exciting year of successes under the guidance of Governor Rene’e Eaton. She and the 2019-2021 District Board and District Committee Chairs are eager to meet with us to share the District progress. It will be a special time to renew old friendships, make new friends, participate in business sessions, celebrate Altrusa, update to new happenings, and share ideas. Above all, it is most important that Conference be a meaningful event for all who attend. Following are a few suggestions that I’ve recommended over time for all of us to keep in mind. • Be sure to wear your conference registration badge during the Conference. Consider wearing your club name badge also. e right side is preferable. It is easier to read when you greet one another.• Introduce yourself whenever possible to those attendees that you haven’t met before. At meals be sure to remember to introduce yourself to everyone at the table that you do not know. Do not eat until everyone at the table has been served. If you happen to be waiting for a special meal, be sure to let everyone know that it is ne to start eating since your meal will be late.• Respect the speaker. Remember that it can be frustrating to be speaking in front of a group and experience chatting in the audience. If you must have a conversation or make a cell phone call, please leave the room. Be sure cell phone is turned o or set to silent.• Arrive early, if possible, to the sessions and be prepared with paper and pens if needed. Don’t take up two or three seats. Move right on in and meet someone new. Introduce yourself and be sure to enjoy their company before the speaker begins.• SMILE! Enjoy yourself and be open to meeting new Altrusa friends. Body language means a lot to those around you. Be positive! Celebrate this special time together!• Share the joy of friendship and camaraderie!

We all know the reasons why we go to conference: we love the camaraderie, the exchange of ideas, the inspiration, the educational opportunities, the fun and the food. Going to conference is a win/win, no matter where it is. But why come to Palisade? We are extraordinarily proud of our little town. Yes, we are a few miles east of Grand Junction, the “biggest town” between Denver and Salt Lake, but Palisade is a whole di erent place. In addition to coming for Conference, we would like you to stay a few extra days if you can, or come back with your family for one of our many festivals or for harvest time. As of the last census, we have less than 3,000 residents. More peach trees here than people. No stoplights or roundabouts. Pretty friendly people. e Grand Mesa, largest at-top mountain in the world, encloses us on the east with its lovely forests, great shing lakes and soon “ e Palisade Plunge,” a mountain bike experience. To the north we have the starkly beautiful and ever-changing palisades, the “Bookcli s”, featuring our local landmark, Mt. Gar eld. To the south is the Colorado River, our source of water and recreation, to the west the magni cent red rock formations of the Colorado National Monument. Among our Altrusans, Conference Co-Chair, Kristi Trumbo and her husband have a commercial peach orchard, and Juliann Adams and her husband recently opened a winery. Our treasurer, Julia Durmaj, has an alpaca ranch in addition to being the assistant director of the Chamber of Commerce. In the summer we have the best “darn” peaches anywhere. Ask anyone who has tried them. Besides peaches and grapes we have cherries, apricots, pears, plums, lavender, and the occasional apple orchard. We have vineyards and wineries: at least 20 local wineries making everything from dry reds and whites to delicious fruit wines, port, ice wine, mead, sweet wines and now hard ciders. Winery tours and tastings are a major attraction year round in Palisade. Many of our wines are awardwinning, all are delicious, and our WineFest in September is recognized as the best in the country. e Wine Country Inn is a beautiful hotel, surrounded by vineyards and the Bookcli s, a pool and truly lovely rooms. It will be great to have our conference in the same place as where we are staying. It is a luxury place and we are getting great rates! e Blue Pig downtown is a ne local art gallery, featuring many local and area artists, and our streets downtown feature revolving displays of Art on the Corner. We have historical walking tours and agri-tours, too. Bicycling is pretty much possible all year, we have some area mountain bike trails that are awesome. e Grand Valley has nearly 100 miles of paved Riverfront Trail for birdwatching, dog walking, hiking and biking. Our local bike shop rents bikes if you don’t bring yours. ey have paddleboards and kayaks, too. We are sure to have something for everyone!

ALTRUSA’S IDEALS:PATRIOTISM gSERVICE gEFFICIENCY

As an Altrusa I will be guided by these Principles of Conduct:MY COUNTRY and MY FELLOW-MEN; Our country is as great as we, its citizens, make it. erefore I pledge my loyalty to its ideals and to its endeavors for the welfare of mankind. I shall strive to practice true patriotism and to ful ll my civic obligations in my own community by interested participation in its activities.MY VOCATION and MY FELLOWWORKERS; My vocation merits my best services and o ers me real opportunities for growth and e ciency in doing my share of the world’s work. erefore I shall study its aims, its methods, and its product that I may intelligently promote its interests and improve the quality of its service to others. I shall cooperate with my fellow-workers, in a spirit of cheerfulness, of readiness to share, and of appreciation of the e orts of others. I shall seek success by an ever-increasing sense of true values—a realization of the highest business ideals through honest e ort, fair dealing, and lo y ambition tempered by humility, of spirit.

ALTRUSA and MYSELF; Revised July 2017 Altrusa o ers to the representative business and professional women of the community an opportunity to touch each other’s lives and to be broadened by an interchange of interests, and by a sympathetic consideration of the viewpoint of others. erefore I shall try to exemplify Altrusa’s ideals of fellowship, of service to others, and of self-improvement. I shall demand of myself a wholesome balance of work and play; a broad and impersonal attitude of mind in my relationship to others and a true loyalty to all. As an Altrusan I shall endeavor to develop right attitudes toward work, toward people, toward life.

The money we donate goes into a fund that is distributed back to Altrusa Clubs all over the World for worthy projects. Your dollars are tax deductible if you choose and you can be well assured that your hard-earned money is going to a good cause. AND besides all of that, you get a really cool Club 21 pin to wear. Please consider a contribution. It is not mandatory that you contribute each year, but once you see all of the worthy grants the foundation funds, you will more than likely want to continue. THANK YOU for your consideration in support of this worthy foundation. Debbie Smith will have forms at our conference in May, but I have attached the link to the form if you want to print it and bring it to a meeting with your $21.

Altrusa International of Montrose Season’s Reading Holiday Project

We placed book collections boxes at seven locations. We received a message from Habitat for Humanity asking if they may be a collection drop off as well. We wrapped a box and delivered it to Habitat. With that being said, we had eight collection boxes total.

We delivered 100 books for the children of HavenHouse (transitional Housing). We delivered 300 books to PIC Place (low income health care facility). We delivered 1000 - 1100 to Health and Human services to be distributed to lower income families.

We live in a giving community as we actuallycollected around 1100 books from the community and Altrusa supplemented this with 400 books, many of these in Spanish.
