NTR - TELUGU GANGA PROJECT

❖ Telugu Ganga Project is an Inter State Project formulated to irrigate 5.75 Lakhacres in drought prone areas of Kurnool, Kadapa and Chittoor Districts ofRayalaseema and upland areas of Nellore District in Andhra Pradesh.

By Utilizing 29 TMC of Krishna Flood Water to irrigate 2.75 Lakh

Acres in Kurnool and Kadapa Districts

OBJECTIVE

By utilizing 30 TMC of Pennar Flood Water to irrigate 3.00 Lakh

Acres in Nellore and Chittoor Districts

❖ Conveying 15 TMC of Krishna water to Chennai City for drinking purpose from the contribution of three Krishna River basin States, Maharashtra, Karnataka and erstwhile Andhra Pradesh with 5 TMC from each State.

❖ To generate 33 M.W Power at Velugodu Balancing Reservoir (9M.W), Chennamukkapalli Regulator (15 M.W.) & Kandaleru Reservoir (9M.W.)

BRIEF HISTORY

❖ Due to successive droughts and consequent acute scarcity of drinking waterfor the metropolitan city of Madras, the then Prime Minister of India madehistoric announcement at Madras on 15th Februvary,1976 that the threeKrishna basin states of Maharashtra, Karnataka and the erstwhile combinedState of Andhra Pradesh had agreed to spare 5 TMC each from their respectiveshares of Krishna waters to meet the requirements of Madras City Water supply.

❖ On 14-04-1976, the three Krishna basin States of Maharashtra, Karnataka andthe erstwhile combined State of Andhra Pradesh had agreed to spare 5 TMCeach from their respective shares of Krishna waters to meet the requirements ofMadras City Water supply.

❖ A meeting Convened by the Union Minister ofAgriculture & Irrigation on 27-10-1977 and attended by representatives of allthe four states, it was agreed that the Govt. of TamilNadu shall be permitted todraw not more than 15 TMC in a Water Year from Srisailam Reservoir during theperiod from 1st July to 31st October through an open lined channel.

❖ In the meeting between the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh andTmailNadu held on 15-06-1978, it was agreed to commence investigationof the project and to get the progress of investigations monitored by aLiaison Committee.

❖ On 18/04/1983, the Hon’ble Chief Minister of A.P., Sri N.T.Rama

Rao and the Hon’ble Chief Minister of T.N., Sri M.G.Ramachandran

have entered an agreement for drawl of not more than 15 TMC of

water from River Krishna for supplying water to Chennai City on

Cost Sharing basis.

agreement between Chief Ministers

of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu

on Telugu Ganga Project

❖Governent of TamilNadu agreed to share the expenditure on theconstruction, improvements including lining and maintenance of thecomponents specified in schedule “A” and Srisailam Reservoir inaccordance with the guidelines specified in Schedule “B”.

❖ The transmission losses in the water conductor system from SrisailamReservoir to AP-TN border be restricted to 3 TMC in a water year.

❖ The water is to be delivered at the constant rate of 1000 C/s restrictingthe no.of days to limit the total supply at border to

8 TMC from July to October and4 TMC from January to April

❖ The Liaison Committee to monitor the progress in the implementationof the scheme and also ensure effective co-ordination between the twoGovernments after completion of the scheme.

Project - Benefits

Industrial Water Needs: Industries and Thermal Power Stations

Viz RTPP in Kadapa District, Krishnapatnam Port in Nellore District;

Sri City SEZ in Chittoor District, Menakur SEZ in Nellore District and

other Industries all along TGP Canal System.

Cost Details of Project

Details of Cost Sharing between Andhra Pradesh and TamilNadu

The Government of Tamil Nadu agreed to bear the proportionate cost of the

Project as determined by the guide lines detailed in Schedule “B” of the

agreement.

14 Nos of Common Components are involved for the purpose of cost sharing

The cost of the common components is sharable in proportion to the benefit

of utilization contemplated under each component for the respective State.

The expenditure on common components incurred up to 03/2014 is

Rs. 3738.84Crores.

The Government of TamilNadu’s share works out to Rs. 1130.23Crores.

The TamilNadu Government reimbursed an amount of Rs.712.00Cr. so far.

The balance amount to be reimbursement is Rs.418.23Cr. (1130.23-712.00).

The Balance works of Distributory System & Balance C.C Lining to TGP

Main Canal in Kurnool, Kadapa, Nellore and Chittoor District are in progress

and proposed to be completed in 2018-19.

Drinking Water is being supplied to Chennai City from 1996 on wards.

Water is being supplied to ayacut in Kurnool, Kadapa, Nellore and Chittoor

District to an extent of 4,28,846 Acres.

Irrigation Potential to a balance extent of 1,46,154 Acres is to be created.
