• The annual increase in the total students’ number is nearly 4%. A comparison of the numbers between the years 2006-2007 and 2009-2010 shows that the number of students enrolled in the public university is constant while the increase is absorbed by private universities.

• The number of professors and administrative staff increases yearly in private universities while remains nearly constant in the Lebanese University.
• There seems to be an average of 12 students for each professor in different institutions.

• Academic titles in the Lebanese Universities:

• Often, all institutions use similar standards in ranking.

• The two major systems in Lebanon are the American Credit system and the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS).
• Almost all higher education institutions adopt a form of 3-cycles credit-based system.

• The two major classes of credits systems are:
1. The American Credit system which is based on contact-hours.
2. The European Credit Transfer System (ECTS) which is student-centered and accounts for the relative workload of the student in average.

Lebanese Higher Education in Numbers Admission Rules
• Admission rules are set by the institutions.
• At the entry level as SOPHOMORE, the student should have acquired the Lebanese Baccalaureate or equivalent.
• In addition, each institution has its own requirements:
For the Faculty of Engineering at the LU and USJ, students should pass an entrance exam. At UOB, AUB, students should sit for the SAT.
For LU, students must pass an entry examination to join the medical studies.
As for the University of Balamand and the AUB, students may join medical studies after a BS in Biology and provided they pass an MCAT examination and interview.

Lebanese Higher Education in Numbers Financing
• Students enrolled at the LU only pay limited subscription fees.
• Tuition fees form the major source of funding for the private
universities; in addition to the support received from donors.
• Several universities have a scholarship system for skilled students.

• Each institution has its own governance.
• The LU is governed by the Council of the University formed of its president and respective faculties’ deans.
• Universities adopting the American model have a board of trustees that nominate the president and the deans.
• Some private universities have private owners who are the members of the board of trustees.

Licensing a New Institution or a New Faculty or a Branch
The licensing of a new institution/faculty/branch in an already licensed institution is regulated by:
1. The private higher education act (26/12/1961).
2. The decree 9274 dedicated to this type of licensing.
3. The decree 8864 (26/7/1996) dedicated to the licensing of new institution of technology.
