The PurposeThe unique format of this event is structured around a series of rotating peer-to-peer discussion tables that enable in-depth discussion and idea-sharing with the Government of Ontario’s thought-leaders. It avoids the traditional conference style and “death by PowerPoint” to ensure each delegate receives an experience tailored to their current situation, allowing more value to be taken from the day. This allows for face-to-face interaction with delegates and speakers, who all have the authority to discuss major challenges, core implementations issues, solutions, future strategy, and procurement.

How it works Each table features a different topic and is hosted by a public sector moderator and a co-moderator from the vendor community.
Our peer-to-peer interactive roundtable discussions enable you to directly engage with the delegates as they rotate from table to tabkle.
By the end of the day, the moderators will have met and spoken directly to each of the senior delegates.

Roundtable SummaryAs the purpose of the event is grounded in idea sharing, we asked moderators from each table to take brief notes on the day’s discussions, as a takeaway for participants to share back in the office and keep the momentum from the event going.
Explore a snapshot of the common themes, pain points and strategies discussed at the different tables throughout the day:
Internet of Things: Smart Machines for Government SolutionsModerator: Ryan Sorrey, CIO, City of MonctonCo-Moderator: David Lurie, Senior Account, Public Sector, Government, Amazon Web Services
This table addressed how connected devices and machine learning play into the development of intelligent communities. Delegates explored the benefits of IOT by saving time and resources while improving the accuracy of their team’s processes.
Moderator observations:
k Generally, most of the attendees were not aware of what IoT or machine learning is, and how it can improve government service
k Every table conversations de-railed to data mining and data analytics, as to how to get information you need from the data you already have. This is the first step into getting the information, but more education required on how to USE it to a full potential
k There are real, practical examples: Air quality monitoring in schools; water consumption monitoring and triggering alarms for possible leaks; parking monitoring; neighborhood watch for unlicensed builds; traffic control and intelligent re-route in real-time
k Artificial Intelligence vs Intelligence Augmentation: Most see Intelligence Augmentation as a way to go, due to the fact that human driven decisions are still required. Replacing human vs making human smarter?
Emerging concerns and next steps:
k Addressing citizens’ perception of “big brother” when it comes to sharing data with government. The value of the services need to be bigger than the fear
k Mitigating risk: The more devices involved and more services enabled, the bigger the impact of the disaster. Implementing more devices is attracting more attackers
k Most departments are struggling with keeping the lights running, and strategic vision is out of date by the time they get to it. This might make it difficult to catch up. That being said, everyone at the table recognized the challenge, and it looks like there are positive changes are being implemented to address it

Securing your Organization’s Data and Sensitive Information Moderator: Nabeel Yousif, Director IT, Infrastructure and Security, Infrastructure OntarioCo-Moderator: Sinisha Patkovic, VP, Government Solutions, Blackberry
Delegates were asked to examine the future of cyber security in the digital government space and delegates shared their experiences and learnings on how to safeguard against the latest threats.
Moderator observations:
k Security is critical to the government function, and a number of delegates had embarked in some sort of cyber security program
k There was a general notion that IT security slows them down k Negative views of IT security, and perception that the environment of fear created by security
professionals is self-serving. Some equated this to the hype of Y2K
Emerging concerns and next steps:
k Perception that IT security is misunderstood and there is great divide between what the business expects vs what security professionals want to achieve.
k More collaboration between security and business is needed k Blockchain could act as intermediary between businesses and government
Open and Analytic: Putting Data to UseModerator: Michael Hillmer, Executive Director, Information Management, Data, and Analytics Office Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term CareCo-Moderator: Dmitri Li, Solutions Architect, Zerto
Discussions were centered around how to unlock the power of government data to propel innovation across the province and improve the quality of services for Ontarians. The table explored attracting the right people to transform data sets into actionable efficiencies, cost savings, and convenient services for citizens and how to effectively deal with information deluge by segmenting data to make it more manageable for analysis
Moderator Observations:
k Information sharing across departments, ministries, and governments is very challenging except in cases of open data
GovConnect OntarioBuilding a Digital Platform to Better Serve Citizens
k May 9, 2017 | One King West | Toronto
CIMay 9, 2017 | One King West | Toronto
k Identifying specific individuals/organizations to focus on data/analytics is creating results, but it is a journey – there is a major difference between how each organization functions
k We can get new tools, new teams, and more granular data, but privacy is a problem k Legacy systems are seen as a stumbling block to moving forward, but people are open to
considering alternative approaches to extract and process data k Open data enables analytics happening outside of government. It’s important for government
to think about implications of sharing data, and also consider helping eternal organizations that are best positioned to this data
Emerging concerns and next steps:
k Opportunity to share creative approaches for building capacity and accessing information k Leadership from the top is key to the cultural change that is required. Then you need
participation at the working level, plus internal capacity building k Addressing how to deliver Proof of Concept to business k Find the right tools, and the right young people to join the workforce. Also find tech-savvy
business partners k Encouraging “hackathons” would help
Engaging the Evolving Digital CitizenModerator: Tanya Twynstra, Director, Citizen Engagement, BC Government Communications and Public EngagementCo-Moderator: Ruth Gastle, Senior Account Executive, Adobe
The table allowed delegates the opportunity to share strategies for keeping up with rising customer expectations and how to successfully implement omni-channel communication approaches for effective citizen engagement.
Moderator observations:
k Highly customized mailings through data analytics. Focus is now on data for evidence informed decision making. Need to analyze what’s coming from multiple sources.
k How to engage at the beginning and with millennials – they are not as likely to engage with government
k Attracting talent: big outreach both internal and external about the future of the OPS. Act as story tellers - tweeting and blogging about job opportunities to attract new talent
k How do you innovatively consult on issues like Islamophobia, Black Lives Matter etc?
GovConnect OntarioBuilding a Digital Platform to Better Serve Citizens
k May 9, 2017 | One King West | Toronto
CIMay 9, 2017 | One King West | Toronto
k Tools: Wordpress gives moderated feedback; Twitter town halls are a lot of work for the outcome; Facebook is often too negative; online consultation & digital survey tools are helpful (cost of face-to-face is too high)
k Increasing use of video technology k There is a massive culture change that needs to take place internally k Engaging with the remote population is more challenging – not as easy to go digital k What is government’s role to support these industries as they make the digital shift?
Emerging concerns and next steps:
k Challenge is to support learning ministries and design changes from the cradle to grave k Sentiment analysis: Find out what’s really meaningful to the citizens k Trying to bring various stakeholders together to show benefits and Proof of Concept k Need for a strategic plan and business model change: Want to be in the quadrant that says IT
is business; Helping and supporting digital business models; Mindset is the problem k Now have to consider a culture strategy for digital transitioning k Expectations for a digital identity: There is fatigue from people being asked the same type
of questions year after year. Need to consolidate information. k Modernize legacy applications k Focus on public facing services and apps
Strategizing for the Implementation of Public Cloud Models Moderator: Stephen Gordon, Executive Director, Corporate Software Branch, BC Office of the Corporate CIO, Ministry of Technology, Innovation and Citizens’ ServicesCo-Moderator: Rob Smoot, Vice President, Product Marketing, Cloud Management Business Unit,VMware
This table allowed delegates to discuss and learn strategies, best practices, and initial outcomes from early government adopters of the cloud approach. It also aimed to identify service and deployment models that work in a public sector setting to deliver flexible and cost effective services.
Moderator summaries were not made available for this table.

Going Mobile: The Evolution of Government Services Moderator: Dafna Carr, CIO, Children, Youth & Social Services I&IT Cluster, Community and Social Services OntarioCo-Moderator: Franco Amalfi, Director, Strategic Government Programs, Oracle
Delegates were able to discuss the impact of advanced mobile technologies on government-citizen interactions and the complexities of designing a service for a wide user base. Focus was given to ensuring the compatibility of applications with an array of devices operating with specific architecture and frameworks, providing information anytime, anywhere to citizens.
Moderator observations:
k Most ministries are considering mobile, if not already implementing. Some are more advanced than others
k Organizational alignment k Culture as barrier to implement this effectively
Emerging concerns and next steps:
k Where to start? k What services to make available digitally on mobile
