A City for Meetings and Events

The City of Göteborg - Strategically Located in a Beautiful RegionGöteborg is situated in the heart of Scandinavia, between the Swedish, Danish and Norwegian capitals. The strategic location makes Göteborg a true gateway to Scandinavia.

Brief HistoryTrade, shipping and international contacts have characterised Göteborg ever since it was founded in 161. In 1731, the Swedish East India Company began trading with the East. In the 19th century, Göteborg became industrialised, largely thanks to the arrival of Scottish and English businessmen. Modern-day Göteborg with its stone-built buildings, wide boulevards and parks was built towards the end of the 19th century. The shipyards grew large in the 0th century, but declined at the end of the 1970’s and are now transformed into residential areas and offices for people to enjoy the harbour atmosphere. The Friendly CitySweden enjoys a stable political, economic and social environment. Göteborg is a friendly city with an open and hospitable atmosphere. Experiences of large international events have given the police the know-how required to work professionally with security issues. Environmental thinking is a key concept for local authorities, trade and industry in order to keep the archipelago unspoilt and to ensure the region remains one of the most popular summer resorts in the country. Adding to the feeling of security is also the fact that the general population speaks English, so visitors can rely on being understood in most situations.

Spirit of GöteborgGöteborg is a big city, with a large business community, universities, culture, sports and events. However, there is a small-town atmosphere with a unique cooperation and joint vision between politicians, the business community and the universities. This is known as the “Spirit of Göteborg”. The decision-making process is easy and agreements can be reached without any great difficulties – a feature of great importance, especially when it comes to arranging large-scale events.

Visibility and Forum for Informal NetworkingA congress in Göteborg enjoys high visibility. Since the city centre is compact and the Göteborg Convention Centre is located close by hotels, restaurants and shops, the majority of the delegates stay within a relatively small area of the city. This also means that the meeting is extended to the city in a pleasant way and the delegates meet spontaneously and naturally in the streets at restaurants and cafés.

Knowledge, Research and IndustryThe region in and around Göteborg is Scandinavia’s most important area for trade and industry. Göteborg is the hometown of world-famous companies such as AstraZeneca, Volvo, Hasselblad cameras, SKF ball bearings, Ericsson Microwave Systems and Nobel Biocare. The telecommuni-cations network in the Göteborg region is one of the most sophisticated in the world. Many foreign companies base their Nordic operations in Göteborg. Some 500 foreign companies operating on the international market are represented here. Being the home of the University of Gothenburg, Chalmers University of Technology and the IT Faculty of Göteborg makes Göteborg the largest university city in Sweden with a total of 61,000 students.

University of GothenburgThe University of Gothenburg was established as a college of higher education in 1891 and became an independent university college in 1907. Today the university is the most popular choice in the country for higher education. With more than 50,000 students and 5,000 employees the university is one of the largest in Europe. The University aims to combine the search for academic excellence with openness to society at large and must address both the problems of today and those of tomorrow.

Chalmers University of TechnologyChalmers University of Technology was founded in 189, following a donation by William Chalmers, one of the directors of the successful Swedish East India Company in Göteborg. Approximately 40 per cent of Sweden’s graduate engineers and architects are educated at Chalmers. Chalmers has around 10,000 students and ,00 employees in 16 departments ranging from Chemical and Biological Engineering, Applied Physics, and Microtechnology and Nanoscience to Architecture and Technology Management and Economics.

The IT Faculty of GothenburgThe IT Faculty is a joint venture between the Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg, with focus on education and research in the field of information technology.

Climate Smart City

“The Statement of Chief Seattle” is believed to be the most beautiful and profound statement on the environment ever made. We can all contribute to make a change.

Göteborg is a climate smart city where a sustainable society is built where people are healthy without environmental resources being consumed. Healthy living is usually associated with the countryside, but healthy living should also be available in bigger cities.

As a member of the European Union, Sweden has put the EU Sustainable Development Strategy into action. It aims at bringing about a high level of environmental protection, social equity and cohesion, economic prosperity and active promotion of sustainable development worldwide. Göteborg has since 1996 also an additional environment policy in place to reach the vision of the city’s development for a sustainable environment. The municipality of Göteborg is working actively with the matter and improvements are frequently being implemented.

Göteborg is a green city, not only because its close proximity to the forest and many parks but also thanks to the closeness of the location of hotels, meeting venues and social activities. The “small big city” means that everything is just around the corner and today, 6,000 hotel rooms are available within walking distance of the Göteborg Convention Centre which is located in the city centre.

Most hotels in the Göteborg region have an environmental plan and the use of environmentally adapted items, waste sorting as well as converting to personal care big packs instead of the individual commodities are some of the activities involved. The Scandic Hotels were awarded the IMEX Green Meetings Awards 008, which have been developed to ensure that organisations within the meetings industry that are making an effort to minimise their environmental and social impact are given recognition within the industry.

The extensive and reliable public transportation system is actively taking part in the development of environmentally friendly solutions. Airport coaches are changing to renewable fuels and the goal is to completely have changed over to renewable fuels by 01.All new city fleet vehicles are of the highest environment class which means the lowest possible levels of nitrogen oxides and particles. Today, all coaches have a particle filter for the cleaning of discharges.

“Whatever befalls the Earth, befalls the people on the Earth. Man did not weave the web of life. He is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web he does to himself.”Excerpt from “The statement of Chief Seattle” in the year of 1854

Scandinavian Airlines System, SAS, member of the airline network Star Alliance, is working with a carbon dioxide offset program for international meetings in Scandinavia. The program will enable congress organisers to include carbon dioxide offset for airtravel with the aim to create carbon neutral events.

Take a natural step, Göteborg is the environmentally friendly option – just around the corner.

Facts:Göteborg has the world’s largest production of climate friendly biogas to the world’s largest biogas fueled fleet of vehicles (busses, lorries, cars)Göteborg uses extremely little oil for heating, less than a percent – probably a world record.Göteborg is home of one of the world’s most efficient combined cycle power plant which soon will be completely bio gas fuelled with no impact on the climate.Göteborg inaugurates 120 climate friendly passive houses (ultra-low energy buildings) in 008.The Port of Göteborg was the first port in the world with shore connection of high voltage electricity.Already in the early 90’s was the Volvo plant in Göteborg named the cleanest factory in the automotive industry. There are 400 recycling stations where newspapers, glass, cardboard, metal, plastics and batteries can be recycled. There are 4 recycling centrals as well as 19 petrol stations where dangerous goods can be disposed of.There are 600 municipality restaurants and school kitchens that serve 11 million ecological meals a year. The Göteborg Award is an international prize that recognises and supports work to achieve sustainable development. In 007 the award winner was Al Gore.

Price Levels

Göteborg in Comparison with Other European CitiesIn 004, the Swedish Tourist Authority commissioned a comparison study of the price level for convention visitors in 14 European cities. The study was conducted and produced by the Metamatrix Development & Consulting AB. The method was based on the collection of prices for a number of goods and services, typical of a convention visitor’s consumption, such as hotel, restaurant, transport, shopping and city sightseeing. Results of the study show that Göteborg is 14 per cent below the average index level and only nine per cent above the cheapest city.

Enjoying Surrounding Areas

The ArchipelagoThe Göteborg archipelago is an extraordinary experience. Thousands of islands lie scattered along the west coast all the way up to Oslo, Norway. Find some of the many untouched spots, and explore the charming little fishing villages.

Vinga IslandTake a trip to one of the most remote islands in the Göteborg archipelago, the enchanting Vinga. Vinga is situated just outside Göteborg and is loved by seafarers as a symbol of homecoming. Vinga is also a lovely island for an excursion and down by the rocks is a bay with some of the best places to go swimming on the west coast of Sweden.

Coastline Cruising There are endless opportunities for excursions in the beautiful archipelago. For instance, Marstrand Island can easily be reached by boat or car. With a history dating back to the 13th century, this is now a meeting-place of the sailing community. Another great destination is the picturesque fishing village of Åstol, where the traditional way of preparing herring and salted ling is demonstrated. Closer to the Norwegian border, accessible by car or bus, are the Koster Islands, the most westerly-populated islands in Sweden with extraordinary geology, fauna and wildlife.

SailingSweden, and especially the west coast, has a long tradition of sailing. There are annual major international sailing events, such as the Match Cup Sweden on Marstrand Island. According to several of the world’s leading sailors, the Swedish west coast is one of the most spectacular sailing arenas on the planet.

FishingThe Göteborg archipelago and the surrounding lakes are considered a paradise by fishing enthusiasts, offering many opportunities for both fresh and salt-water fishing. Fishing boats are available to ensure that the best spots are reached. Early in the morning, there is also a chance to take part in the daily fish auction in Göteborg. This is an opportunity to see rare fish, as well as genuine fish auctioneers in full action.

Afternoon GolfSweden has produced some of the world’s best golfers, including Annika Sörenstam and Jesper Parnevik. Western Sweden alone has 55 golf courses - many in beautiful settings adjacent to stylish accommodation in castles or manor houses, with excellent gourmet cuisine. The golfing season is long, thanks to the influence of the Gulf Stream and there are over 30 golf courses in and around Göteborg to choose from, including pay-and-play courses.

Vitlycke Rock Carvings In Tanum, a two hour drive from Göteborg, an invaluable part of Sweden’s cultural heritage of mankind can be found in 3,000-year-old rock carvings. Most of the rock carvings date back to the Bronze Age 1,800-500 BC. The Vitlycke Museum shows the interesting history of the people from the era, as well as several pieces of jewellery and tools that were found during the excavations. The ground in the whole area of Vitlycke is listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List with the motivation: “The rock carvings of the Tanum region constitute an outstanding example of Bronze Age art of the highest quality. The range of motifs provides exceptional evidence of many aspects of life in the European Bronze Age. The continuity of settlement and consistency in land use in Tanum, as illustrated by the rock art, the archaeological remains, and the features of the modern landscape in the Tanum region, combine to make this a remarkable example of continuity over eight millennia of human history.” For more information please visit www.vitlyckemuseum.se

Marstrand Island with the Carlsten FortressMarstrand Island, located 45 kilometers north west of Göteborg in the Northern archipelago, is a Mecca for the sailing fraternity and a popular summer resort. The charming village with beautiful wooden buildings was founded in the 13th century by a Norwegian king and has also been under Danish hegemony before the Roskilde Peace Treaty of 1658 made Marstrand Swedish. The impressive Carlsten Fortress, built in the 1660’s, dominates the island and is one of the best preserved stone fortresses in Northern Europe. Those who climb up to the tower roof are rewarded by a magnificent view over the Marstrand archipelago. For more information please visit www.marstrand.se

Space for MindsSweden stretches over 1,500 km from the north to the south and the contrasts between the various parts of the country are dramatic. The seasonal changes are striking with a warm, light and pleasant summer, a colourful autumn and a snowy winter followed by a bright, refreshing and vivid spring.

Sweden offers a rich selection of activities in areas such as nature, culture, sports, design, food and shopping. Swedish cultural policy has been successful in spreading culture to a wide population, with a well developed infrastructure of museums, libraries, theatres, cinemas and other cultural institutions across the country. The past decade in particular has seen the extensive internationalisation of Swedish cultural life, especially in popular culture, with Swedish artists, actors and fashion designers attracting worldwide attention in fields such as music, literature, art, design, fashion and media. Sweden also offers a large and varied selection of interesting restaurants, not just in the major cities but throughout the country, where people interested in gastronomy can enjoy Swedish quality ingredients prepared and served in a modern and innovative way.

A world heritage site is a cultural or natural site, monument, city or geographical habitat that is deemed irreplaceable and thus deserving of protection and preservation by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO). Thirteen Swedish sites are inscribed on the prestigious World Heritage List and are guaranteed protection and care for all time.

The Right of Public AccessIn Sweden, everyone has the right to be out in the countryside; visitors from abroad as well as Swedish citizens. It is called ”the right of public access” and is a benefit not found in a many other countries. The right of public access is a great freedom but it must not infringe upon the freedom of others. It requires responsibility and good judgement so that no damage is made to the landscape or animal life and consideration is shown for both landowners and for others who are out in the countryside. The essence of the right of public access is concisely expressed by the phrase, ”Do not disturb, do not destroy”. For further information please see www.allemansratten.se

The Swedish Climate Bearing in mind its northern location, it would be easy to think of Sweden as a country with a harsh climate. However, the heat from the Gulf Stream makes the average temperature in southern Sweden no lower than -°C in February, rising to +1.1°C in July. On sunny days between May and August temperatures can rise to +30°C in the air and +4°C in the sea and lakes.

Sweden’s changing seasons affect nature, daylight, temperature and even to some extent the Swedes themselves. Every season has its perks, but spring and summer in Sweden are a must! From late February/early March the days become longer and brighter.
