WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN

WHAT IS SKILLSUSA?

SkillsUSA is an organization that aims to improve the

quality of the American skilled workforce.

The organization hosts many service projects and

competitions in order to help prepare our generation for

the real world and to close the skills gap.

It is a professional organization for high school students.

WHAT IS THE SKILLS

GAP?

• The idea that there are not enough people qualified for

jobs in the STEM fields.

• By 2020, there will be 14- 25 million vacant jobs in the

STEM field

• To close this gap, students need to be educated and

trained in the STEM field.

• By participating in SkillsUSA, you will be helping to close

this skills gap!

BENEFITS OF JOINING

SKILLSUSA

• Compete and show off your skills at district and state level

competitions.

• Chance to attend Nationals in Louisville, Kentucky.

• Run for a position as a National Officer or be a voting

delegate for the state of Maryland.

• It’s a great resume builder. (We’ll help you write your

resume.)

• It’s only 75 dollars for all four years if you’re a freshman,

otherwise it’s 25 dollars per year.

• Possible Ocean City trip.

COMPETITIONS

• There are many competitions including (but not limited to):

• plumbing

• job skills demo

• web design

• medical terminology

• photography

• You don’t have to compete in your particular magnet field if you don’t want to.

• Some competitions require a team so get your friends and compete together

• Look at the SkillsUSA website to see all the competitions.

STATE OFFICER OR

VOTING DELEGATES

• To run for a state officer, you must be a current freshman,

sophomore or junior

• State officers:

• Attend meetings

• Discuss arrangements for competition day

• Host the award ceremonies.

• Attend a training session in Louisville before the National

Conference

• Voting Delegates don’t have heavy responsibilities until

the National Conference. You get all the fun in Louisville

without the stress of competing!
