Greetings, 4-H Families! What a wonderful time it has been with Nebraska Extension! Thank you all so much for the support and for welcoming me into your county! It has been a pleasure serving as your 4-H Ex-tension Assistant and working with your family! After much consideration, I have recently taken the opportunity to begin a new adventure working as a Grain Accounting Specialist at CHS Inc. located in Holdrege, NE. Thanks, again, for the great memories, and I look forward to calling

this area home for many years to come! Best, Paige Carlson

Nebraska 4-H has a lot to celebrate!! February is Nebraska 4-H Month and February 15,

2019 will mark 150 years since the day the state of

Nebraska chartered the University of Nebraska.

This means that on February 15, 1869,the

University of Nebraska became part of the fabric

of our state. That’s 150 years of history to impact, to

unpack, and stories to tell.

During the upcoming year, Nebraska 4-H will be

Part of the celebration.

Flat Herbie is here to celebrate this milestone! He is

2019 4-H Volunteer Enrollment and Screening

Each year, 4-H Volunteers enroll (or re-enroll) in our online system. In addition to enrolling,

4-H Volunteers are screened through the Department of Health and Human Services. In

2019, our West Central District will be re-screening all present and new volunteers.

Big Red Summer Academic Camps

June 9-14, are career exploration camps held at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. By participat-ing in a camp youth get the opportunity to ex-plore the UNL campus, meet people from across the country, spend time investigating an interest or potential career, and have a lot of fun! Every-thing from filmmaking to crop science. Big Red Summer Academic Camps are open to all youth grades 10th-12th including recent high school graduates. Early bird registration is April 15 regu-lar registration is May 1. More information is available at https://4h.unl.edu/big-red-camps.

Culinary Challenge Contest

The Culinary Challenge Contest is open to 4-H youth from 10 – 18 years in age. To participate, youth must be enrolled in a 4-H Foods and Nutri-tion project and be a team of 2. Phelps & Gos-per counties are offering this contest during the county fair. In addition, the contest is held at the Nebraska State Fair. Youth participate in the contest by choosing a theme and a table setting for the event. The 2019 challenge ingredient will be DAIRY. The Culinary Challenge Contest is a great way for the 4-H’ers to learn more about Nebraska commodities and how we use them in food prep-aration. You do not need to qualify through a county contest to participate. More information

2019 Governor’s Agricultural Excellence Award The purpose of the Nebraska 4-H Foundation’s Governor’s Agricultural Excellence Awards, sponsored by the Nebraska Investment Finance Authority (NIFA) is to recognize 4-H clubs. The 4-H club’s work of the individuals in the club and the community service work of the entire club is celebrated and rewarded. All Governor’s Agricultural Excellence Award applications must be submitted to http://ne4hfoundation.org/recognition/fillable-gov-ag-application-2/ by March 1, 2019.

Experience the Power of Red Visit Day There is no place like Nebraska…. Experience the Power of Red Visit Day Wednesday, Febru-ary 13, 8:30a.m.-12:00p.m. An event where you’ll learn how the College of Agricultural Sci-ences and Natural Resources (CASNR) pre-pares students for careers in everything from an-imals to plants, soil to climate, golf to business, mechanization to leadership, and food to foren-sic science.

Gosper County 4-H Carnival and Supper The Gosper County 4-H Carnival will be held on Monday, March 18 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Elwood Civic

Center. Clubs are invited to come up with a fun game for the evening. Proceeds from your game benefit both

your 4-H Club and the 4-H Council. Independent members are also welcome to have a game booth with the

proceeds going to the support of the 4-H Council

A supper will be held beginning at 5:30 with a free will donation. Families are asked to bring a dessert to serve 8.

4-H Speech Contest – New Date!

The 2019 4-H Speech Contest will be held on Monday, April 1. The contest will be held in Elwood this year with a start time of 6:00 p.m. Your 4-H Councils reviewed their original date to better meet your schedules. Check out the specifics below for the contest. For information on the District or State 4-H Speech Contests, please refer to https://4h.unl.edu/communication.

4-H’ers may participate in both the PSA and Speech categories.

Only individuals, not teams, may participate in the contest.

Age Divisions: Clover Kids 5-7;

Novice-ages 8 and 9 OR Junior – ages 8-10;

(A 4-H member may participate in either Novice or Junior, but not both.)

Intermediate – ages 11-13;

Senior – ages 14 and older.

Public Service Announcements Rules and Regulations;

All PSA’s are 60 seconds in length.

The state theme for the 2019 PSA is “Inspire Kids to Do”.

All radio PSA’s must promote 4-H and be general enough to be used anywhere in Nebraska at any time of the year.

All 4-H PSA’s must include the following tagline within the last ten seconds of the PSA: “Learn more about the Nebraska Extension 4-H Youth Development Program at 4h.unl.edu.” The tagline is included in the 60 second time limit.

Sound effects and public domain music may be used. Copyrighted materials may not be used.

All PSA’s must be the original work of the presenter. Contestants may not use PSA’s writ-ten and provided by the state or national staff.

Radio PSA’s will be audio, brought to and presented at the contest in an electronic format as a .wav or .mp3 audio format.

Speech

Length – Clover Kid Novice-3 minutes or less

Both Clover Kid and Novice may recite a favorite poem, story or something written by someone else. These classes are not eligible for state.

Length- Jr. Division – 1-3 minutes; Intermediate Division – 3-5 minutes;

Sr Division – 5-8 minutes.

All speeches must be original and include 4-H as the major component of the speech.

4-H public speakers may not use the old speech written by a sibling, another 4-H member or anyone else.

Acknowledge the source of information used in the speech. For example, an article from a magazine may be used for reference, but should not be quoted directly unless you tell the audience your source.

Use of visual aids and props is not allowed.

Dress appropriately. Do not wear costumes or special effect clothing.

Scholarships Available Gosper Co. 4-H Council Scholarships

The Gosper County 4-H Council will provide up to four scholarships for graduating high school

seniors at $500 each. The applications for the high school scholarships will be available through

your guidance counselor. The application is also available on our web site at www.phelps-

gosper.unl.edu. The application is also available in the Extension Office in hard copy. This ap-

plication form is due on April 1.

NACEB Scholarship 2019 The Nebraska Association of County Extension Boards, NACEB—Nebraska Association of

County Extension Boards (NACEB) Scholarship Program includes the following: • One $1000 scholarship at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources (CASNR) or in the College of Education and Human Sciences (CEHS) for an incoming student (freshmen or transfer student).

• One $1000 scholarship for a current student (sophomore or higher) enrolled in CASNR or CEHS.

Phelps Co. Shotgun Registration: Shotgun volunteers John, Raymond, and Lee invite youth to register for 2019 Shotgun! Practices will be held at the Holdrege Gun Club on Monday evenings, beginning on March 25. Contest will be held on May 6. Fee for 2019 Season is $20. Register in the Extension Office!

New Leaders Welcome! Volunteers who wish to be involved in the Shooting Sports program are always welcome! Contact the Extension office if you wish to become a leader!

4-H Volunteer Training—Rescheduled to March 25

Join the 4-H staff on March 25 for an interactive and fun late afternoon training, working with other adults

interested in 4-H, as you dig further into your 4-H program. Plans include ideas and activities for your 4-H

club meetings, new 4-H happenings, service learning collaborative discussions and

more to keep you up-to-date on your 4-H program. Use this training as an early year

“kick-off” to the year. Parents, leaders and other volunteers are invited to this time of

sharing, fun and learning. Call to register for the training by Thursday, March 21. All

are welcome, but pre-registration by the 21st is required.

Lottery Animals

If you want to try the 4-H Animal Science project this is the place to start! Each species is from the same

quality producer of that species and are approximately the same weight. . All youth must register by March

29.The cost per animal is lower than the normal cost of a quality show animal. One animal per species per

4-H youth and our county fair has a special class just for you.

YQCA-Youth for the Quality Care of Animals

YQCA is a national, multi –species youth livestock quality assurance program that covers food safe-ty, animal well-being, and character development through age –appropriate educational curriculum. Youth who will exhibit beef, swine, sheep, goats, dairy, poultry, or rabbits at the County and/or State Fair will need to have a current YQCA (or PQA) Certificate number. All training needs to be com-pleted by June 15, no exceptions.

Training Options:

In-Person—Attend a one-hour training; $3 fee; valid for one year

Online—Complete the age-specific course online; $12 fee; valid for one year Test-Out—Complete and pass the age-specific test; $36 for Intermediates,

$48 for Senior Division; valid for age division

Register for YQCA Trainings at yqca.org. Youth must register at this site to receive a YQCA Certifi-cate. With this transition to the YQCA system, some youth who previously “tested-out” may no long-er be valid. Please, check with the extension office to determine if your youth needs YQCA training in 2019.

AkSarBen Updates

In 2019, AkSarBen will be a Junior Show! DNA collected for the Nebraska State Fair will also qualify for AkSarBen entry. DNA will only be sent if the animal has been identified and paid for at showstockmgr.com site prior to the deadline. If animals will be shown at AkSarBen only (not State Fair) youth must contact AkSarBen to re-ceive DNA envelopes.

4-H Friday!

A 4-H Friday will be held at the Elwood School on Friday, February 22 right after school. Youth in grades 2-5 are invited to at-tend this fun after-school program! We will be making the N150 WearTec activity and will “Glo Big Red” !! 4-H Friday will be held in the commons area of the Elwood school and will conclude by 3:45 on the 22nd. If interested in attending, please call the office at 308-785-2390!

4-H Horse Stampede The horse stampede is a group of contests for youth interested in horses. These contests do not require youth to have a horse all they need is to have an interest and be willing to learn some in-formation about horses.

The 4-H Horse Stampede will be held on Saturday, March 30, 2019 at the Animal Science Complex.

NEW HIPPOLOGY ACADEMY Online Short Course for Youth, Adults, Leaders and Volunteers Equine professors working with ExtensionHorses.org are offering a new Hippology Academy, Feb. 11 to March 24, 2019. This short online course is designed for youth, adults, leaders, and exten-sion personnel to gain knowledge and practice on horse hippology content. Registrar at www.extensionhorses.org February 10. Interested in competing at District or State 4-H Horse Shows? Youth must pass Horsemanship Ad-vancement Level II by May 10, 2019 in order to participate. District and State Show entries are al-so due May 10 in the County Extension Office. 4-H Companion Animal Challenge: The Companion Animal Challenge is a set of contests for youth interested in companion ani-mals. These contests are animal-less and test youths knowledge about companion animals. New this year to the contest are a Cat Skillathon and an essay contest. 4-H youth ages 10-18 are invit-ed to participate.

This event allows youth to apply their companion animal knowledge, but does not require them to have an animal!
