Carolyn Gaither Ellis Publisher and Editor of Razors Edge Magazine

The first issue of GospelnPsalm magazine is a tribute to Carolyn Gaither Ellis, publisher and editor of Razors Edge Magazine, and my magazine publishing mentor for more than 4 years.

From 2006 to early 2014, I served in some capacity as a staff mem-ber of REM, as contributing writer, head writer, sales representative at-large, and columnist, of InSPAration, and finally 2012 to early 2014 shadowed Ms. Carol on the assembling of approximately 6 issues, of the quarterly publication, as she taught me the ins and outs and steps she followed in putting the RazorsEdge magazine together as it ap-proached its 10th anniversary celebration.

From late nights assembling pages, and using the folding machine, proofreading and editing articles, assisting with layout and design, to having her reactive in attending events, as she called herself my ‘co-pilot’ for our attendance at behind-the-scenes fashion events, such as New York’s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, Atlantic City, New Jersey’s first Fashion Week, charity fashion shows in York, Pennsylvania spear headed by Sha’ Summerlin, of The PRIMP agency, Glenn Jackson’s Silver Spring, Maryland show and photo shoot(s) amongst other affairs – she was not hesitant about hitting the road.

To make sure I wouldn’t be surprised later on, she was fine with letting me in on the grunt work, the fun work, and the various events, which gave me a true picture of the business and pleasure, that went along with creating, shaping and understanding the tenacity needed for publishing a maga-zine. Our longest trek was a 9 hour trip to NC for an event I co-hosted, that should have taken 6 hours, but knowing everything happens for a reason, we just switched gears, and got there safely, not the slightest bit harried by the situation, and true to her jovial, and story sharing nature she kept the convo flowing all the way, despite dozing most of the way back, after being tired out from ‘net’ working the room with her quick wit, engaging personality and genuinely curious manner about people. Though she’s now getting used to her new neighbors and adjusting to her surroundings in

a nursing home setting, she’s still got plenty of stories to share when-ever I pop in. You can write to her at Summit Nursing Home, in Catonsville, Maryland, to tell her your latest news, and send her some great photographic memories for keepsakes, to fill up her new photo album. I’m sure she’ll get a kick out of that. For teaching me well, and making me see beyond just what’s written on the pages – thanks Ms. Carol! NOTE: ON JAN 25, 2015 MS. CAROL CLOSED THE FINAL CHAPTER OF HER LEGACY!

As we embarked upon the last season of the year 2014, marked at the beginning by Fall’s warm Indi-an summer days and capped by nights of cool crisp

breezes, which turn into Winter’s brisk mornings and dare I say it - snow dusted evenings, it always brings to mind the days of the candy apple or as we called them in my neigh-

borhood back in the day, an ‘apple-on-a-stick.’

Certain familiar things, some sweet and some not so – like that snow dusting I mentioned, signify changes around us, because face it, working day-in and day-out can sometimes be-gin to look like the same ‘ol same ‘ol because the days come and go by so fast sometimes. It’s why we need little seasonal reminders – like the candy apple or a neighbor’s suddenly appearing new décor, to draw our attention to stop and reflect that a change has just oc-curred. Sometimes, these seasonal phases also bring with it unique opportunities that we can only grab if we’re tuned in enough at the moment to recognize their subtle appearance of scenery changes budding on the horizon.

How do you embrace the new season? For instance, we just eased out of the third quarter, quietly, thankfully – it was ‘out like a lamb,’ and we’ve already swung into Spring. Does the process of setting resolutions for a new year signify the season’s change for you or that doesn’t happen, for one reason or another. Does the sight of noisy, bundled up kids stand-ing on the corners in your neighborhood, remind you a significant occasion has appeared on the calendar? Whichever way you get jolted awake to noticing that the next seasonal phase leading to the end of one year or quarter and the beginning of another, it’s my hope that you choose some sort of tradition to celebrate, as a way to prevent the days of the calendar from just rolling on by you. Enhance your reading regimen – explore poetry and great authors in our Poetry/Book section, where we highlight newcomers; get out to enjoy some theatre or musicals, and check out what’s happening locally or elsewhere, see our Music/Arts section, and finally a daytrip to an outlet is always an added pleasure to punch up your wardrobe with a few new fashionable pieces, while taking in beautiful and color-ful scenes.

If you don’t already have it on your radar, get out to witness highlights of the season. If you already do that, now is as good a time as any to add something new to your seasonal

traditions and awaken your senses to the new reasons to appreciate annual calendar changes. In this issue’s Ministry section, we chat about spiritual listening as we embark on expanding and growing. Upgrade your surrounding with items featuring the beauty of the season. Display some sort of inspi-rational banner on your landscape that captures a selection of positive words about the season and its attributes. Whatever you decide, don’t just let the new season with its new opportunities just pass you by. Stop and reflect and be reinvigorated during this refreshing New Year through renewed spir-itual commitments, updated goals, a change in scenery, added décor, or the creative way you decide to get reinvigorated and refreshed.

“You did not choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit, and that your fruit should remain, that whatever you ask the Father in My name He may give you.” “There are 12 chosen women like the 12 chosen dis-ciples. As they touch others with the seed I have placed in them, they will see the world multiplied in spirit and in truth”. “This platform I have created is the birth-ing place for their voices which carry my word day in and day out, to be heard until they are seen!”

That scripture (John 15:16) along with those words, are what Prophetess R. Mel-vinia W. Williams heard during a New Year’s Eve Sermon she was preaching on December 31, 2013 at The City of Resto-ration Chris-tian Center, in Brentwood, MD., where she is the Assistant Pastor. As God revealed to the congre-gation about the blessings He had for them, simultaneously, He began to speak about a remnant group of warriors, who together, would change the world forev-er. Prophetess Williams’ recorded the names and faces of those the The Father

had selected and she began the journey of contacting each of these chosen vessels for their assignment.

Scripture Text: “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” John 8:32

Are you free? Does a piece of paper, a law, verbal acclamation, make an individual free? Missing chains, missing shackles, missing cells, are they an indication of freedom? Can we

truly be free when our minds are still imprisoned by ignorance of one’s culture, condition, and character? When we have not released the baggage of our past, and embraced the benefits of the present time that we live, can we truly be free when our spirits are seeking confrontation and retribution for past and present injustices? Can we truly be free when we do not know where we are going, and seemingly not interest-ed in finding out? Can we be free when there is no shame in our game and the dance floor and streets are our claim to fame?

Oftentimes, we have rhythm but no reason, we rap but we won’t read; yet everyone will admit that a mind is a terrible thing to waste. Shack-les have been removed, equality can be achieved, yet we find ourselves

still enslaved, not by others, but by ourselves.

Freedom does not come when someone else releases you, it comes when you release yourself. When you realize that God created all men equal. Even though we come in different shades, we are still equal. If you want to be free, Change:

• Change the way you think.• Change the way you feel.• Change the way you act.• Change the way you treat people.• Change the way you talk and walk. (Walk is the path you travel).

For change must begin in you. Remember, if the Son, therefore shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.

Rev. Rose Anderson-Wise Co-Pastor at the Agape House Ministry under the lead-ership of Elder Edward G. Robinson. Rev. Wise is a servant of the Most High God and out of her com-passion and love for babies and others, came Roc-ka-My-Baby Pregnancy Support Center. The center is located at 1501 N. Dukeland St. in Baltimore City. It’s a place where women and men that are facing hardship with trying to support their families are welcome to get baby items and resources to help them in difficult times. Rev. Rose is also a graduate of the Baltimore School of the Bible 2010.

The hustle and bustle of the Agape House where the Rock-a-My-Baby (RMB) Pregnancy Support Cen-ter is housed, is common place, day in and day out. More than 100 homeless or single mom’s seek assis-tance from RMB on an annual basis. That steadily rising number of homeless, expectant moms seeking assistance on a daily to weekly basis, justified RMB’s separate and burgeoning outgrowth from the Agape House a few years ago.

Their mission is to provide immediate assistance to expectant mothers who are experiencing hardships in dealing with a planned or unplanned pregnancy. The assistance includes referrals, guidance and spiri-tual and emotional support.

RMB Support Center operates under the auspices of the Agape House, a 501(c)(3) organization that has a 26-year track record of working with pregnant and indigent women and children in crisis in Baltimore City. RMB is physically located at 1501 North Dukeland Street, and receives contributions at P.O. Box 20633, Baltimore, MD 21223. They provide ongoing support, for families who can receive several services, such as: •Pregnancy Tests, Spiritual Encouragement, Referrals for Medical, Housing Legal Aid, Professional Counsel-ing, and Community Services Workforce Development

People don’t understand the calling of Music in Ministry. When I was a child my parents raised me in the Church. I was an Army Brat. So the background was laid. Jesus Christ was and is the heart of my family life. I loved music and writing it. But what does that mean? It means, that the Holy Spirit inside of me allows me to hear the in-spired words of the Lord and set them to music. I’ve written music for Gospel groups all over the State of Texas. The music and lyrics just flowed. What an honor for the Lord.

One day I felt a different calling other than the Music. It was a calling to preach the Gospel as well as write the Gospel through music. Be-cause “…how can they hear without a Preacher?” When music is your Ministry it’s not uncommon to be able to play several instruments. In the Old Testament, music was ordained by God in Gen-esis 4:21; It speaks of David and the house of Is-rael; [2 Samuel 6:5 *And David and all the house of Israel played before the Lord on all manner of instruments made of fir wood, even on harps, and on psaltries, and on timbrels, and on cornets, and on cymbals. – Also see 1Chronicles 15:16-22; this last scripture gives you the history of the choir.]

This mantel called music is God given, and I’ve taken it very seriously by attending school to master it. Even though the Lord gave it to me as a Gift. I did this in order to paint the lyrics as the Master gave them to me. The notes form in your head, like a sermon. The Lord giving his instruc-tions, it swirls around you, through-out you, in your spirit, and when a song is completed, you

can feel the Lord smile. You must learn how to distinguish the two; the Gospel sermon, and the musical sermon. I’m so in love with the Lord that he gave me options and lets me know which is which. Currently I am working on my 3rd CD, which is my love letter to the Lord.

Matering the Ministry of

MusicBy Reverend Tommie Smith, Jr.

GOD can use many forms of testament to deliver his message and connect with your soul. The LORD, our GOD formed me in my mother’s womb to be a leader and min-ister through the art of dance. As a small toddler, music and dance seem a part of my

nature to express and communicate. At four years old, I began my dance training through Mary Lois School of Dance. I furthered my dance training and education at the Dallas Arts Magnet Performing and Visual Arts (Booker T Washington High School). I also extended my dance training and education through Texas Woman’s University. Throughout my training and education, was blessed with the opportunity to excel in the art form of ballet, modern dance, jazz tap, contemporary, African, folk, theatrical and praise.

GOD shaped, molded and directed my path as a minister through dance at a very young age.

An art form of greatness through JESUS our LORD, SAVIOR and living GOD!

When I was nine years of age, I dis-covered my gift to express and move people with the gospel and to touch their inner soul. My mom and auntie would suggest that I dance at various church programs (evening services, Christmas and Easter pro-grams, Black History programs, etc.)

The first church program, where I discovered that I could reach people through dance, is when I ministered to the song titled “Change” by Wal-ter Hawkins. While ministering, halfway through my performance, women were shouting and praising the LORD. Many times afterwards, I received the same reaction. My gift is to move and reach people (touch-ing their inner soul) through the art of dance.

Dance - con’t

As a teen, I discovered my ability to lead children and young ladies in dance ministry. Many times, I would be appointed to choreograph and lead the dance ministry and this carried on to adult-hood. I was given the opportunity to lead various dance ministries at various churches. In 2012, I began to further my dream to lead a dance ministry. The LORD has given me the vision for my ministry to touch people on a national and international level.

It seems as if the industry of life coaching is something new, however it is not. It may be that within the last few years we’ve seen and heard more and more about this particular industry. Some may even wonder what the difference is between coaching and counseling and if there really is a need for

both. I believe there is not only a significant difference, but there is also a need for both as they individ-ually have a different purpose.

The main difference between coaching and counseling is that coaching deals with the future and counseling deals with issues of the past. A coach is more of a “motiva-tional friend.” Coaches help a client get from point A to point B. They help them reach goals and achievements by giving assignments, listening and holding them accountable. A counselor prescribes medication, gives advice and helps a client deal with issues of the past. People may question who needs a coach. ANYONE who is trying to achieve a goal, accomplish something or needs encouragement or support would benefit from a coach.

As a marriage coach I help clients upgrade their marriage and get their marriage back on track. I help them go from miserable or mediocre to magnificent. Some of the ways I coach clients are via learning improved interper-sonal communication and problem solving skills. I also assist them in gaining new insight to many of the issues that may cause stress in their marriage. Giving my clients exercises and activities that will enable them to explore hidden issues with practical approaches for resolution is also a helpful approach to improving marriage relations. If your marriage is in need of an upgrade or tune-up, consider hiring a marriage coach to propel you to the next level in life and love.

As I entered into The Healing Place Kathy was with a client but I immediately was welcomed by this delicious aroma and

light jazz music playing in the background. Relaxation is the key at this spa. As I waited, I looked around the place, she takes great pride in the products she uses and sells at the spa, such as, Pure African Shea Butter and face soap, Herbal teas which are the best I have ever tasted. The majority of her products are natural, not so much organic. Natural products have healthy properties, she says. There is a room for massag-es and facials, and a separate room for manicure and pedicures.

I have known Kathy King (owner) for 13 years, which happens to be the length of time she has owned the establishment. Kathy opened her doors in December 2001, and she started in a place that was only 275sq feet.

The Healing Place was birth 13 years ago when Kathy was working in a hair salon and she desired “a quiet place to deal with her clients, a Godly atmosphere.” God birthed the business in her at that time. Kathy opened her doors in December of 2001, and she started in a place that was only 275 square feet. The establishment has since grown significantly as well as her clien-tel, and products. She has two treatment areas which consist of a massage a facial, and waxing room, and she has a large area for manicures and pedicures.

Kathy is really big on a healthy way of living, but she says she had to learn this way of living. “What you put in your body is what you get out of it and you have to work on inner before the outer”, she says. Kathy is talking about healthy eating. What you eat will not only show in your health but it will show on your skin. Kathy states acidic foods contribute to acne problems as well as other skin issues such as Eczema. Acidic foods consist of some of your meats, breads, dairy, soda, juices, and fruits. She is really learn-ing more about Alkaline foods, such as some fruits, veggies, almonds, romaine lettuce, cu-cumbers, herbal teas. Now she is not stating that the acidic foods are totally unhealthy because as

you can see we need fruits, but what she is say-ing is that we need to have a well-balanced diet. Water is the most important thing that we need in our daily diet I asked Kathy why is massage so important. She says massage is the best way to

de-stress. Our day to day is so stressful that we must have some way to de-stress. Stress leads to anxiety, depression, and death. Massage helps the blood to flow through the body. It flushes toxins out and relaxes the muscles.

Kathy clients consists of men and woman and the age ranches from 35 and above, but she serves all ages, from teens to adults. She serves a diverse group of people. Kathy has one employee who stays at the front desk, and two contracted employees. One of the contracted employ-ees is the massage therapist as well as herself. The other contracted employee is the wax tech as well as the nail tech. The Healing Place is located at 729 Thimble Shoals Bou-levard #3c Newport News, Virginia 23606.
