Welcome to the Catholic Communities of the Macleay Valley Fr Paul Gooley Fr James Foster
5 November 2017 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year A
GOSPEL REFLECTION:
In today’s Gospel Jesus speaks to us about the failings of the scribes and
Pharisees, the leaders of his time. What he has to say is valid for all time
and for all in authority. Government and authority are worthy of our
respect and cooperation, but we need to be awake to the weaknesses of
human nature. People in power can become uncaring of others,
especially of those who are poor, and people in power can become
addicted to the advantages and privileges that come with the job.
What is true of those in public office is also true of ourselves in our own little
areas of power. How often parents or teachers can become authoritarian
in attitude towards the children in their care. How often people in the
workplace can become rigid and rude in dealing with fellow workers.
And the same can all too easily become true within the Church too, in the
relationship between clergy and people. It is
easy for individuals to become dictators in
their own backyard.
Jesus gives emphasis to not bossing others.
We are to be servants of one another. “At
your service” is a great motto and a great
attitude to have in life. It encourages us to
be receptive of other people and not so
self-obsessed. St Paul applauds the
Thessalonians because they accepted the
Gospel as a message from God. They
listened to it and took it to heart.

Are You a Doctor, Nurse or
Allied Health Professional?
Please sign this open letter against the legalisation of assisted suicide www.healthprofessionalssayno.info.
Proposed legislation to legalise assisted suicide and euthanasia will be debated in the Parliament of New South Wales on the 16 November. Similar bills are expected to be introduced in other states in the near future.
Let your members of parliament know that you support increased access to better aged care and mental health services, disabilities assistance and excellent palliative care, rather than the legalisation of assisted suicide and euthanasia which would place the most vulnerable patients at risk as well as undermining the relationship between patients and healthcare professionals which is based on trust and mutual respect.
This is an independent petition which has been organised by concerned healthcare professionals.
