“Grist from the Mill”

Last Tuesday I had a lithotripsy done on my right kidney.

Lithotripsy comes from the Greek and literally means

“we’re going to hit you in the side so hard that you will for-

get all about that tiny stone.” Well, that is not the exact

meaning, but about 1 a.m. Thursday morn-

ing I was convinced that was what had

happened.

My kidney stones and I have gone on

quite a long journey together. My first

stones left me wondering what I had done,

and therefore could change, to never have

to endure this again. After that I went through a period of

time when I began to believe that God has a sense of humor

and I was it, rather like slapstick comic with minute pieces

of rock replacing the cream pies. But, of late, I have made

peace with the idea that my stones and I will never truly end

our relationship, I have become philosophical about them. I

figure they are God’s way of reminding me that yes, things

can get worse so, shut up, quit complaining, and do the

work He has given me.

My stones have actually led to some very interesting con-

versations about God, medical technology and His ultimate

plan for humanity. There is something about laying on a

gurney in a hospital gown in a room full of people you don’t

know while discussing your urinary habits that seems to

knock down some of the social barriers abound us. In those

times we have talked about God’s wonderful design of the

human body, the great gift of medical knowledge He has

given us, and that wonderful day when all the pain will be

past. Maybe it is just the acetaminophen talking, but,

strangely, those conversations about the Lord almost make

the stones worthwhile.
