PHILOSOPHY OF ATHLETICS"Our intercollegiate athletics program is an important facet of the total educational pro-gram at Goshen College. A quality athletic program provides opportunities for the physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual development of its participants, players, and coaches. Quality includes a chance to succeed athletically. It also means fidel-ity to our college mission, fairness in opportunity for women and men, support for the academic aspirations of athletes, good sportsmanship and attractive facilities. Athletes have the opportunity to learn the important life skills of wise time management, leader-ship and teamwork. Such life skills contribute positively to students performance on the playing field, in the classrooms and in residence life. Athletic teams have numerous op-portunities to model a Christian lifestyle."

No one healthcare professional has sufficient knowledge to handle all needs that arise, it takes a team approach. At Goshen College this team includes a state licensed, NATABOC certified athletic trainer, team physician, nurse practitioner and nursing staff, a network of orthopedic surgeons, family practitioners, sports psychologist and a student athletic training staff. Goshen College is fortu-nate to be located across the street from Goshen General Hospital and is located close to several medical profes-sional practices.

Roman Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center The Roman Gingerich Recreation-Fitness Center, which opened in 1995, is home to the Maple Leafs’ 14 intercollegiate athletic teams. The $7.3 million facility houses a variety of athletic and fitness-related activities. Whether you are a member of the golf team hitting balls on the indoor range or a basketball player running on the 200-meter indoor track, the Gingerich Center offers athletes every chance to train and compete successfully. The luxury of such a large athletic training facility allows athletes to train when their schedule permits. The recreation-fitness center is open from 5 a.m. to 11 p.m. throughout the week, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday. With these hours, athletes also have the op-portunity to train and compete without sacrificing their academic pursuits. During their respective seasons, Goshen teams can all take advantage of the facility in a three-hour time frame and are not forced to practice at odd hours. The spring sports season brings five Goshen teams into the facility at one time. The golf team is able to hit balls in one area, while the softball team takes cuts in the batting cage, the baseball team has infield practice and the track-and-field squad trains on the indoor track. Not many institutions can boast of such an efficient use of time or space, and that is one reason Goshen has continued to excel both athletically and academically.

Facilities

Page 15: Goshen College Athletics Visitor's Guide 2012-13

www.GoLeafs.net 14

Eigsti Track and Field Complex A newly resurfaced 400-meter track makes for an outstanding performance venue. The addition of the Andrew W. Frech Press Box Facility in the spring of 2008 completes the Eigsti Track and Field Complex. The Press Box Facility is fully equipped for video timing systems, media reporting and communication. The base of the press box provides storage for track equipment as well as pro-viding room for implement weigh-in and athlete check-in on event days. The jumping pits are conveinently located on the south end of the track. Beyond the south fence of the track is ample room for the throwing events.

Soccer Complex The Goshen College soccer complex is one of the most exciting places to watch a small-college soccer match in the coun-try. Goshen is one of the few NAIA schools

in the country to have a fully lighted stadium specifically built for soccer. The grandstands along the west sideline seat up to 2,500 spectators. The stadium also featues permanant dugouts for both teams as well as officials. Another unique feature of the Goshen College soccer complex is that it features room for up to three additional practice fields, making prac-tice and game contests for multiple teams easy.

Baseball Complex Originally built in the 1950’s, the Goshen College Baseball Complex has undergone many improve-ments throughout the years. Pine trees planted in the 80’s provide an intimate feel along with a valu-able wind break behind the backstop and dugouts as well as an excellent hitting background beyond center field. In 2006, the infield was resurfaced making for one of the finest playing surfaces around, while a full-infield tarp was purchased at that time to help protect it. The field has unique dimensions of 330 feet down the lines, 398 feet in the power allies, and 380 feet to straight-away centerfield.

Softball Complex The Goshen College softball field is situated just outside the south exit of the Recreation-Fitness Center. A high-quality playing surface is completed with newly built dugouts and a press box.

Tennis Complex Ten tennis courts sit just outside the northeast side of the Recreation-Fitness center. With six fully lighted courts, along with bleachers along the west side, the Goshen College tennis complex is ideal for hosting tournaments both during the day and evening hours.

Golf The Goshen College golf team has a unique advantage in that they have a three-hole golf course right on campus. Highline Golf Course sits on the south edge of the Goshen College athletic complex and is open to the public. For home competitions and practices, the Maple Leafs use Timber Ridge Golf Club in Millersburg. Opened in 1988, the par-72 course features 6,363 yards of golf.
