Approximately 3.5 miles, the Great Highway runs along the edge of the Pacific Coast—as well as next to the San Francisco’s popular Ocean Beach. The water at Ocean Beach is noteworthy for its strong currents and fierce waves. The highway forms the western border of Golden Gate Park, where many festivals, concerts, and events take place throughout the year.

THE CLIFF HOUSE is a restaurant that sits atop the cliffs just north of

Ocean Beach on the western side of San Francisco. This famous five-star restaurant

attracts visitors worldwide.

FORT FUNSTON

is a rugged stretch of

coastal headlands, sand,

and dunes south of Ocean

Beach. In some places, the

dunes reach heights of

200 feet or more. At the

foot of Fort Funston’s

cliffs is a wild and windy

beach suitable for walking

or horseback riding.

DUTCH WINDMILLThe famous Dutch Windmill is San Francisco’s 147th landmark. Also known as the

"North Windmill," it was the first windmill in Golden Gate Park, it stands 75 feet

tall with 102-foot long spars—and was built to pump up to 30,000 gallons of

water. The Park Commissioners also were mindful of the beauty a large Dutch

windmill would add to the west end of Golden Gate Park, and after its creation

the structure became a frequent subject for postcards and snapshots. Similar to

the Murphy Windmill, the Dutch windmill’s usefulness only lasted a few years.

Neglect, storms, and the needs of World War II stripped the windmill of its metal

and spars. A new plan is in the works for the whole western edge of Golden Gate

Park with money earmarked for both windmills for restoration.
