It was also said that Ravi Teja would play the role of Lord Krishna in this film which was done by Akshay Kumar in the original and that the official confirmation of the film would be happening in a week. [8] However, in mid-November 2013, reports emerged that Daggubati Venkatesh would play the role of Lord Krishna and Rajendra Prasad would reprise Paresh Rawal in the film. It was said that Daggubati Suresh Babu acquired the remake rights and would produce the film while Jayanth C. Paranjee would direct the film. [9][10] But later Kishore Kumar Pardasany was selected as the direc- tor of the film. [11] After much speculation, Suresh Babu confirmed to the media in mid-February 2014 that Pawan Kalyan would play the role of Lord Krishna and Sharat Marar would be co producing the film on North Star Entertainment. [12] After considering the titles Deva Devam Bhaje, [13] Go Go Go Govinda, Ori Devuda, Mr. Devudu and Gopala Gopala, [14] the film’s title was chosen to be Gopala Gopala just before its formal launch on June 9, 2014 at Hyderabad. [15] Anoop Rubens was confirmed to replace Sohail Sen as the music director, [16] and Jayanan Vincent was selected to handle the cinematography despite re- ports stating that P. C. Sreeram would be doing the job. [5] 2.2 Casting Though initially it was reported that Venkatesh and Rajendra Prasad were playing the main roles in the film, it was later known that Rajendra Prasad was not a part of the film and that Venkatesh would reprise Paresh Rawal. The producers were in talks with Vikram for the role of god. [17] Later, Pawan Kalyan was selected to play the role of Lord Krishna. [12] After considering Nayantara, [18] Anjali, [19] and Radhika Apte for the role of heroine oppo- site Venkatesh in the film, [20] Shriya Saran was selected to play the role in early May 2014 after Nayantara walked out of the project due to dates issues and remuneration problems. [21][22] In early June 2014, Mithun Chakrabor- thy, was selected to reprise his role from the original, thereby making his debut in Telugu cinema through the film. [23] Posani Krishna Murali, Krishnudu, Raghu Babu, Vennela Kishore were selected to play other important roles in the film. 2 Production

2.1 Development

In early April 2013, the writer duo Paruchuri Brothers in-formed the media that they were in final stages in acquir-ing the remake rights and that work on the script wouldbegin after acquiring the rights. It was also said thatRavi Teja would play the role of Lord Krishna in this film

which was done by Akshay Kumar in the original and thatthe official confirmation of the film would be happeningin a week.[8] However, in mid-November 2013, reportsemerged that Daggubati Venkatesh would play the role ofLord Krishna and Rajendra Prasad would reprise PareshRawal in the film. It was said that Daggubati Suresh Babuacquired the remake rights and would produce the filmwhile Jayanth C. Paranjee would direct the film.[9][10] Butlater Kishore Kumar Pardasany was selected as the direc-tor of the film.[11]

After much speculation, Suresh Babu confirmed to themedia in mid-February 2014 that Pawan Kalyan wouldplay the role of Lord Krishna and Sharat Marar would beco producing the film on North Star Entertainment.[12]After considering the titles Deva Devam Bhaje,[13] GoGo Go Govinda, Ori Devuda, Mr. Devudu and GopalaGopala,[14] the film’s title was chosen to be GopalaGopala just before its formal launch on June 9, 2014 atHyderabad.[15] Anoop Rubens was confirmed to replaceSohail Sen as the music director,[16] and Jayanan Vincentwas selected to handle the cinematography despite re-ports stating that P. 2.2 Casting

Though initially it was reported that Venkatesh andRajendra Prasad were playing the main roles in the film,it was later known that Rajendra Prasad was not a part ofthe film and that Venkatesh would reprise Paresh Rawal.The producers were in talks with Vikram for the roleof god.[17] Later, Pawan Kalyan was selected to play therole of Lord Krishna.[12] After considering Nayantara,[18]Anjali,[19] and Radhika Apte for the role of heroine oppo-site Venkatesh in the film,[20] Shriya Saran was selected toplay the role in early May 2014 after Nayantara walkedout of the project due to dates issues and remunerationproblems.[21][22] In early June 2014, Mithun Chakrabor-thy, was selected to reprise his role from the original,thereby making his debut in Telugu cinema through thefilm.[23] Posani Krishna Murali, Krishnudu, Raghu Babu,Vennela Kishore were selected to play other importantroles in the film.[6]

Pawan Kalyan underwent a special diet and exercises toloose weight and look fit for the role in the film. Re-ports stated that he would use a Hyosung GV650 AquilaPro in the film.[24][25] Madhu Shalini was selected to playthe role of a journalist.[26] However, it was not knownwhether she reprised Nidhi Subbaiah or Tisca Choprafrom the original.[27] Diksha Panth was selected to reprise

Poonam Jhawer from the original.[28] Kishore Kumarsaid that the role of Pawan Kalyan would be seen for25 minutes as in the original movie, played by AkshayKumar.[29] His screen length was later extended to 45minutes.[30] Venkatesh handpicked his wardrobe for hischaracter and incorporated different hues of short kurtasto his wardrobe and used a lot of linen and cotton withmore than 40 changes onscreen. He researched aboutthe kind of clothes he needs to sport for this role andshopped personally for his outfits and ensured that theclothes matched all his scenes.[31]

2.3 Filming

In early May 2014, the film’s co-producer Sharat Marar,in an interview to IANS, said that the film’s regular shoot-ing was planned to commence from May 19, 2014 on-wards, after Pawan Kalyan was relieved from his politicalduties, further saying that the makers were aiming for aSeptember 2014 release.[32] However, it could not hap-pen and after much speculations, reports emerged thatthe film would be officially launched on June 2, 2014and the shoot would continue in a specially erected setin Hyderabad.[33] However, principal photography com-menced a week later on June 9, 2014 at RamanaiduStudios at Nanakramguda in Hyderabad.[34] Venkateshjoined the shoot in the same day.[35] Pawan Kalyan al-lotted 25 days for the shoot of his character in the filmwhose duration is half an hour.[36]

The film’s second schedule started on July 18, 2014 atHyderabad after a brief break due to Venkatesh, whowent to promote his film Drushyam. It was also reportedthat Pawan Kalyan would join the film’s sets on July 23,2014 and makers would be shooting a special sequence inwhich Pawan Kalyan would be seen driving his personalbike and with that schedule, it was expected that the film’stalkie part would come to an end.[37][38] Pawan Kalyanhowever joined the sets two days in advance and scenesfeaturing him and Venkatesh were shot.[39] The film’sshoot continued in the outskirts of Hyderabad wherescenes on Venkatesh. were shot.[40] The film’s shoot continued in late August2014 at Nanakramguda.[41] The exteriors of OsmaniaUniversity’s College for Women located at Koti, Hyder-abad were used to shoot a court scene, which was con-firmed by the producer Daggubati Suresh Babu, who saidthat the college had the look which suited the scene.[42]

Filming then proceeded in Ramoji Film City.[43] PawanKalyan shot for his introductory song in late Septem-ber 2014.[44] The filming was almost complete and inmid October 2014, the film’s climax was shot in theoutskirts of Hyderabad.[45] A song on Venkatesh andPawan Kalyan was planned to be shot which was not apart of the original.[46] In the end of October 2014, cru-cial earthquake scenes were shot on Venkatesh and oth-ers at Ramoji Film City.[47] Filming then continued inNanakramguda. By then, 75% of the film’s shoot wascomplete and Pawan Kalyan was said to complete shoot-ing for his part in the next couple of weeks.[48] The nextschedule was planned in Varanasi for few days and it wasknown that shooting of two songs and graphics work wereremaining for completion.[49] By mid November 2014,the film’s shoot neared completion.[50]

Venkatesh and Shriya joined the film’s sets inVishakhapatnam where a song and few scenes wereshot in 3 days.[51] On the schedule’s completion, theproduction team revealed that the schedule was shotin the city only to boost the morale of the team atRamanaidu Studios and also give out a message to theBengali and Odiya film industries that film shootings canbe carried out smoothly post destruction of the city dueto Cyclone Hudhud.[52] The film was shot near Varanasiin early December 2014. Venkatesh and other artistesparticipated in the shoot there.[53] A song on Venkateshand Pawan Kalyan was shot in the outskirts of Hyderabadfrom Christmas.[54] The final schedule began the nextday and crucial scenes of Pawan Kalyan were planned tobe shot.[55]

3 Music

In mid-April 2014, Sohail Sen was selected to composethe music for the film which was his Telugu debut.[56] Healso met the makers in Hyderabad for the music sittingslater.[57] But Anoop Rubens replaced him in June 2014as the music director of the film. The makers said thathe composed and recorded a song before the launch ofthe film and it was also said that all the songs would berecorded in a week’s time from the launch.[58] On Au-gust 14, 2014 Lahari Music acquired the film’s audiorights along with Drushyam for an amount of 8 million(US$130,000).[59] In mid November 2014, the sound-track album was announced to be released in December2014.[50] The release date was confirmed as December14, 2014 in late November 2014.[60] It was postponedlater to December 28, 2014.[61]

The film’s soundtrack was reported to feature 3 songs intotal and Pawan Kalyan was reported to appear in two ofthem. A unique audio launch was planned by the makerswhich was different from routine events.[62] Kailash Khercompleted recording for a special song in the soundtrackon 22December 2014.[63][64] The songBhaje Bhaaje sungby Haricharan and penned by Anantha Sreeram was re-leased on 1 January 2015 as a single track.[65] The songwas listened by 0.1 million viewers in YouTube within10 hours of its release and received 2500 likes, 100 dis-likes and 200 comments.[66] The audio launch event wasconfirmed to be held on 4 January 2014 at RamanaiduStudios in Nanakramguda.[67][68] The lyrics for the othertwo songs were penned by Sirivennela Sitaramasastri andChandrabose while Sonu Nigam was the other playbacksinger apart from Kailash Kher and Haricharan.[69]

4 Release

The film was earlier planned to be released on ei-ther September or October 2014, but a January 2015Sankranthi release was announced in July 2014.[70]Gemini TV acquired the film’s Television broadcast rightsin early December 2014.[71] Suresh Babu sold the rightsfor an amount of 200million (US$3.1million) as a threefilm package including Drushyam and Bhimavaram Bul-lodu, both co-produced by him.[72] The release date wasconfirmed as 09 January 2015.[7] United States theatricalrights were acquired by BlueSky Cinemas Inc.[1]

4.1 Marketing

The film’s motion poster was unveiled on 28 November2014.[73] The poster was designed by Anil and Bhanu ofAB Core Design.[53] It began trending on social network-ing sites within few hours, it became a worldwide trend-ing topic which The Times of India called astonishing.[74]Anoop Rubens received acclaim for his background score

in the motion poster.[75] Another poster featuring PawanKalyan and Venkatesh on a bike was unveiled on 16 De-cember 2014.[76]
