-by Kelsey Simpson For 48 years, the localsand surrounding commu-nity members have en-dured the "fine" weather atthe annual GooseberryLake Rodeo, and this yearwas no different. The tra-ditional rain storm not onlyarrived on schedule for thestart of the weekend, buteveryday seemed to get agood downpour. The soggyconditions however hadlittle affect on the diehardrodeo fans who toughed itout with umbrellas, rubberboots, slickers, or garbagebags and cheered thecowboys on. Back in town, Consortmerchants were doingbattle over the coveted Ro-deo Decorating Contesttrophy on Friday. Thecompetition was tough onMain Street with ATB,RBC, Main Street Busi-ness Centre and ExquisiteNails & Hair all putting upa good show. But while thedowntown gang relied onyouthful exuberance to winthe judges over, it was themore experienced bunchfrom the Senior's Lodgewho earned the trophy thisyear! The rodeo was theplace to be this weekendas hundreds of peoplemade an appearance atthis annual event. Camp-ers and trailers at thegrounds were in high at-tendance also and manystayed the entire weekend, including many sad, wettents that tried to hang inthere till the last. The Gooseberry LakeRodeo was also the laststop for pickup man KevinGirletz who is retiring afterover 30 years of pullingcowboys from a jam. The Coppertown Clownmade his appearance inthe mud and rain through-out the weekend. BySunday's performancethe rodeo arena was over-whelmed with water andbecame a soup hole thatwas perfect for mud bath-ing for the California
clown. Equipped with his in-famous dogs, Bert Davisshowed off to the crowd ashis dogs did barrel racing, hoop jumping, and otheramazing feats. PesteringKevin Girletz and an-nouncer Barry Bogheanseemed to be a favoritepastime as the clown triedto invite Kevin for a swimin the arena and alwayshad a smart remark forBarry. Most attractions thisyear were of great successas dozens of children ranaround with balloon animals
and painted faces that mademost parents question who'skids are who's. Along withthe great concession food, another favorite was themini-midway's cotton candyand candy apples. Manychildren were thrilled asthey stuffed their faces withthe fluffy sugar and sunktheir teeth into the stickyapples. The rain provideda great wash cloth for thesecandy connoisseurs astheir parents didn't seemas happy as the kids at theidea of their sticky facesand hands. The Chili Cook-Off,sponsored by Atco Elec-tric/Atco Gas, had a goodnumber of entries and of-fered up some interestingfare in the competition. Thisyear's chili champ is JackDempsey and crew. One of the crowd favor-ites, according to some, was the Canadian MountedShooters Competition. These talented competitorsdisplayed their skills to thecrowd as they made theirway through a marked pat-tern and took aim at thetarget balloons. And as the
