If you've ever been frustrated by Google telling you that you need to bid $10 (or more) on a single keyword for them to give you the privilege of a click, you've already felt the sting of what a "poor" Quality Score is in Google's eyes.Quality Score (QS)is Google's special way of "passing judgment" upon your landing page, and rating different aspects of your paid search campaigns.Google then uses this rating to make other judgments about your suitability to advertise on their network for a particular keyword.

PROOF Google 'Hates' Marketersgoog5.jpgThis screen-shot is taken from Google's own AdWords Help section;

Holy @$&*. It's true! Google really does NOT want affiliates advertising on AdWords in the way most of us do it. The highlighted items Google frowns upon, are the most easy and effective ways of selling online.If you don't believe me that Google actually says this, the live Google link for the above screen-shot is here;http://adwords.google.com/support/aw/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=66238No wonder affiliates face problems with Google assigning low Quality Scores. What can we do?

Google is in The Driver's Seat (unfortunately for us).Nobody likes being told what to do. Especially not us marketers. We're independent and hard-working - but Google often tells us we are not 'good enough' for them. And that really sucks.But All That's About to ChangeI'm about to show you the easiest way yet, to boost your Quality Score in minutes and get lower and lower click prices. And it doesn't have to cost you a thing.If that doesn't surprise you, this might;Here's the SituationIn your own business, imagine if you had customers who'd buy from you on an ongoing basis, even if;- you regularly changed the rules of the service you provided to them- you increased the amount you charged them, on a regular basis- you occasionally told them they were not good enough to be associated with your businessAND THE CUSTOMERS STILL LINED UP ON THE STREET TO BUY FROM YOUThey'd be committed to pay you regardless of the actual service or actual fees you charged them.That's the position Google is in. And YOU are the unfortunate position of being their customer. With only at teensy-weensy bit of power.C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\1PFSM3OT\MCj04298750000[1].wmf But Real Help is NearI'm going to show you some free steps you can take to boost your Quality Score by huge leaps and bounds. I discovered these methods through spending my own hard-earned money on Google advertising and other research so this is not some theoretical BS.

First, you need to experience something in the form of a quick quiz. It will illustrate what you may have been doing wrong up to now. Try this and see how you do you may be surprised (I certainly was)C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\0CQ2OWRF\MCj01509270000[1].wmf

Why Google Created Quality ScoreYes, there is some things we can do together to fix this situation. And I am happy to give you some easy solutions.What's more, it does not have to cost you a thing to get great quality scores. Were talking about 7/10 and 8/10 with no difficulty whatsoever (9/10 and 10/10 are harder to get).When Google is asked why Quality Score is needed, they typically offer give a variation of this;GOOGLE SAYS: it improves relevance and optimizes the experience of our users.In their eyes, Quality Score helps ensure that only the most relevant ads appear to users on Google Search and their Google partner networks.Important Note: Notice I did not mention their Google Content Network Quality Score does NOT come into consideration for Content YET. But that too may change in the future. We have been warned.

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\MEDIA\CAGCAT10\j0301252.wmf What Else Does Google Say? "The AdWords system works best for everybody-advertisers, users, publishers and Google too-when the ads that we display match our users needs as closely as possible."While their statement contains some truth, it's not the entire story.Relevance helps everybody, and Google clearly strives for it - up to a point.But they have a price where relevance can be compromised (usually it's between 5 and 10 dollars if you've ever seen those figures next to keywords in your AdWords acct).If a superficially 'irrelevant' ad gains a huge CTR, it's very possible for it to earn a high Quality Score.Google's answer as to why? An ad must be relevant if lots of people click on it.Problem solved? Not really.How Google Uses Quality Score to Control YOU
C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\1PFSM3OT\MCBD05078_0000[1].wmfQuality Score is Google's top-secret formula. And has a huge influence over the performance of your paid search account. It's one of the major tools in Google's arsenal to control you as an advertiser.I don't know about you but while I have to respect rules I agreed to when I signed up, I don't like being 'controlled'.Examples: Suppose you're unhappy with how often your ads are running. Or the price youre paying per click. Or your ads' average position.On most other advertising or marketing platforms, including other online networks, magazines or newspapers this would be grounds for a serious conversation with your vendor.But with Google Adwords as far as they are concerned, there's really no need for a chat. Because all of the above problems are your fault; your keywords didn't earn enough Quality Score to have more impressions, a lower CPC or better position. So it follows it must be your responsibility to figure out how to improve your own Quality Score.Not their problem. Your problem. And they have a long line of other advertisers behind you, waiting to take your place. Quality Score severely distorts the concept of an auction. That can work in your favor or against you. Yes, there's an auction going on. But it's happening in a market where each advertiser a different multiplier on their money.This is enormously important for your business and success with Google AdWords.

Quality Score Does at Least Three Things for Google C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\KBQYNAL5\MCj00787340000[1].wmfIt gives them power by ensuring nobody knows how or why certain ads are run.

It acts as a filter to limit advertisers who jump into Adwords with dreams or delusions of a quick buck, flooding the system with their own inexperience.

It acts as a 'preferred advertiser program' to reward top performing accounts. The more you conform to Google's way of doing things, the more you are rewarded.

If Quality Score didn't exist, inexperienced advertisers (of which there are many) would be allowed to distort Google's system.For them, Quality Score is a kind of handicapping system which requires they earn and prove their way onto a level playing field. That can be a good thing.Then, there's the other end of the scale; the pro operators who are trying to swing the system towards their benefit.These are way more sophisticated than the common Google advertisers. Some nefarious advertisers try to fool people in one way or another. Not good. And it can give all marketers a bad rep.This type of marketer tends to move fast. Picking keywords, creating landing pages, testing and testing some more. They make some cash, then quickly move on to the next thing.It's an effective way to make money, if you can do it ethically and within the rules Google sets for AdWords advertisers (we all signed the agreement with Google remember?).We'll talk more about fast (and proper) ways to make money that way later.Quality Score can be a consumer protection device in this regard. It often penalizes pages which use deceptive practices or language, fail to make proper disclosures, and show other signs of real or possible nefarious activities.Your account history component of Quality Score acts a little like a 'three strikes' baseball rule, allowing a poor history to increase the costs of you trying new Google Campaigns.In these and other cases, Quality Score is clearly a penalty. Requiring extremely high bids to earn your way back into the auction.How Quality Score CAN Help You C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\1PFSM3OT\MMj03363320000[1].gif
High Quality Score advertisers have proven their ability to get high CTRs on both a keyword-level and in overall account averages. Just as it's in Google's interest to prevent or penalize bad advertisers, it's in their interest to promote good ones.Google wants to keep these advertisers happy. Big spenders are satisfying Google searchers.By getting high Quality Scores these advertisers get discounts on their CPC. They therefore get an edge - the benefit of the doubt.This situation is highly unusual in any market. Suppose your doctor got paid based upon your health. Or your monthly mortgage statement had variable pricing based on the 'Quality Score' your home had received for the prior month.You want to be in the winning group. And we can get there quickly and easily.

C:\Users\USER\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\HLLFMD9D\MCj03854460000[1].jpg Demystifying GoogleGoogle's proprietary algorithms can cause a lot of discussion because theyre partly secret, complex and in constant flux. But if you create landing pages and ad groups that make sense, quality score takes care of itself. And starts to work in your favor.Quality score, as it's displayed in the new AdWords interface or if you get it from your Reporting Center, is on a scale of 1-10.Most AdWords users who have campaigns getting an acceptable number of clicks, have an average quality score of about 6/10. But they range from 6/10 to about 8/10.qs_cpc_scatterchartThe chart above shows a selection of the quality score and CPC of about 1000 keywords across 15 PPC accounts. As you can see, there's a relationship between CPC and Quality Score.

If you have a large number of keywords, your quality score may be lower than it might otherwise be. Why? Because your offer is likely to be relevant to only so many keywords.CTR will decrease when you push beyond the point of relevance as Google sees it.On the other hand, you could get a high quality score by using fewer keywords, but then are you going to be missing out on key customers?Some keywords are more important for you than others. If the long tail keywords don't produce much return in investment (ROI) for you. So, don't worry too much about average quality score for your account. Your best performing individual keywords are what counts.Here's a recent quote from a Google rep;"CTR is a large component of Quality Score. If you increase the CTR, you will increase the Quality Score. It can be pretty tough to get scores of 9-10, but it is definitely possible. More often than not though, the keywords I see in accounts that have scores of 9-10 are branded keywords that have very high CTRs (sometimes as high as 30% CTR)."

While CTR is a big factor in Quality Score, really only AFTER the campaign is launched, I'm not going to focus on it in this report, because it warrants a report all its own and CTR does you no good if you cannot get clicks to your page in the first place.Frankly, there are much easier ways of fixing your initial Quality Score problems than messing with your ad text or keywords. And that's where we're going nextLanding Pages The Easy Fix to Quality Score Blues?
