➔ According to a Business Week article, CEOs identify ‘creativity’as the most important leadership competency for the successful

enterprise of the future.”

➔ Google Drawing is more than a drawing app, it’s a tool to help

students communicate clearly and concisely.

Student Assignment

Using the Google Drawing app, your group will create a thinking map on one of the scientist, a science diagram of the

concept, and a study card that is a mnemonic device. Your group will use all of the information to create a short

book on your topic using iBooks Author and share to iTunesU.

Rubric for iBook AuthorWow! (4) Good (3) Almost (2) Poor (1)

Central Point Central point is

understood throughout book.

Has central point,

understood on most pages. .

Has central point in

title, but pages do not

relate.

Lacks a central

point.

Text based

support of ideas

(Content Accuracy)

Demonstrates an accurate

understanding of the

science concept based

on textual evidence.

Demonstrates

some

understanding of

science concept with

only one or two factual errors.

Demonstrates a

limited understanding

of concept with only a

few factual errors.

Demonstrates no

understanding of concept

with many factual errors.

Illustrations &

Diagrams

All clearly add meaning to

the text, are accurate and

support the central point.

Uses original images or

public domain images.

Most add meaning to the text,

are accurate, and support the

central point. Uses at least

one original image, but mostly

public domain images.

Use occasionally, but

some do not

support central point.

No original images,

but uses public

domain & CC

images.

Many are unneccesary (do

not support central point) OR

None shown. Demonstrates

no regard for copyright on

images used.

Use of Original

Images, Public

Domain Images,

Credible Sources &

MLA Citations

Uses credible sources

in MLA format using 1 book

and 1 online source.

Both book & online sources

are credible and cited but not in

MLA format.

Book source is

credible but online

source is not.

Demonstrates no regard for

citing credible sources.

Ways to Use Google Drawing

Starting with substitution:Create worksheets quickly.

Move up to augmentationby

having the students use Google Drawing to complete & submit

online. No copying of worksheets. Assigned,

completed, & returned online.

Modification/Redefinition

Students connect with students from another country to discuss genetic

engineering. Students write factually about how it is used in their area and

share opinions about it. They can compare how it is used and perceived in

different parts of the world.

Some resources for this:

Create Worksheets 1. When you click on

Tools, then Research,

it will pull up a Google

Search on the side.

2. Type in search terms, here

I typed in “ blank animal cell

worksheet.” When you find

your image, just drag it to the

canvas.

3. Select the T box to

type in directions or

terms.

Moving up the SAMR level to Modification/Redefinition

Creating a campaign that addresses current issues and problems in

our society working with other students around the state or world.

Examples:

During an election, create a campaign called #TBT

#timesarenotchaninging comparing an older political cartoon to one

that they have created for present day elections.

Create a political cartoon in groups….

Working in groups to

create a Book Cover with

QR codes or Augmented

Reality Links.

Using iBooks Author

Students will

create a book

with their own

creations of

how political

cartoons have

impacted

different

sectors of our

society

Examples of ARAdvance to creating 3d

drawings in Google

Sketchup. Students can

share their 3d creations on

up.com or add to their iBook

Author book.

Create an iMovie Stop Motion Video

Using drawings from Google Drawing or svg cut files,

make a stop motion video to link with augmented

reality for the summary. See the following example:

But first….Let me take a

SELFIE!

Pros & Cons

Pros ConsHigh student self motivation on using the drawing

app.

Students wanted to spend too much time on the

drawing part.

Reinforced basic ELA concepts like using text

based evidence, credible sources, & writing in

science.

At first, they only wanted to present random facts.

They had a hard time summarizing & limiting

information that supported central point.

Witnessed them work through frustration on layout

by working with their groups cooperatively to come

up with solutions.

The layout and graphic design part was difficult for

them.
