Massapequa's gift to real rock & roll iscoming home for the holidays again:On the heels of announcing Rockin'Rudolph – their first studio Christmasalbum in 10 years now out onSurfdog Records – Brian Setzer and

his Brian Setzer Orchestra have revealed theitinerary for their 2015 "12th Annual ChristmasRocks!” tour, which includes a stop onNovember 29 at 8 pm at The NYCB Theatre at Westbury. Tickets are on sale now; log on tothetheatreatwestbury.com or ticketmaster.com.

The iconic guitarist, songwriter, vocalist, and three-time Grammy-Award winner and his18-piece Orchestra will visit 31 cities on the

tour that began on November 14 inMinneapolis, which is also making stops inDetroit, New Orleans, Los Angeles and SanFrancisco. Their 12th annual trek will featuremusic off the new album – which is availableas a limited edition box set, CD, vinyl, ordownload – plus music from their three previous best-selling holiday albums, as wellas original material from Setzer.

"It's always exciting to add new songs," saidSetzer about the set list for a show that annualis one of of the most highly anticiapated in thisarea. "I'm thinking about opening with 'Rockin'Around the Christmas Tree.' We have neverdone that one before."

Produced by Peter Collins (Rush, Bon Jovi,Alice Cooper) and recorded in both Nashvilleand Hollywood, the 12-track Rockin' Rudolplhincludes highlights such as the aforementioned"Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree," "Yabba-Dabba Yuletide," and "Rockabilly Rudolph,"among other notable Christmas classic tunes.Setzer's trademark guitar work and vocalstylings are matched with his orchestra'srockin' big-band horn arrangements.

Setzer seems effusive about he and hisorchestra’s take on holiday classics – as heshould be as songs such as “Rockin’ AroundThe Christmas Tree” burst from the speakers, buoyed by new-age big band arrangementsand fresh energy.

“Listen to that swinging chart Mark Jonesand I wrote, and it catches your ear up top,”said Setzer. “You know that it is BSO, when it comes at you with the crazy chords from the beginning, but you don’t know what song it could be. It’s just like chaos, and it sounds like you are stuck in traffic. Then the song comes in, and it’s awesome. I had my way of scuffing it up and making it bad ass, substituting chords, scuffing about the vocal, and that great guitar solo. I really love the solo. It is where the microphone got bumped, and it was in the wrong spot. Like I said, the original‘Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree’is great. You cannot beat it, but have to make it your own.”

Perhaps what makes these holiday albumsso special is that releasing them is not a marketing ploy in the least: Setzer has genuine affection for the classic tunes he’sselected.

“First of all, these songs are great songs,”said Setzer. “It doesn’t matter if they are holiday songs or when they were written, theyare just great songs. The trick is to make themsound hip, and some of them are eternally hip— you know? You don’t have to do too much.Take a song like ‘Rudolph The Red NosedReindeer,’ which everybody knows. On theChristmas tour, I started playing that in a rockabilly fashion — which would be in a minorkey — with a rockabilly beat and Ijust started singing. Itcould have been any-thing. Then it was overChristmas and I said,‘Oh My Gosh! Thatprobably started it.’ Iwas making it hip andcool and bringing it intomy own style. That wasreally the first song thatI made sound like that.”

One of rock's legendary guitarists,Setzer is a "musician'smusician" credited with continually takingchances with innovative and daringmusical styles, whilesinglehandedly resur-recting two forgottengenres of music (rocka-billy in the 80s andswing in the 90s).Along the way, he hasscored chart-toppinghits, sold 13 millionrecords, and receivedThe Orville H. GibsonLifetime AchievementAward throughout his decorated career asfounder/leader of TheStray Cats, his 18-piece Brian Setzer

Orchestra, andsolo artist. He isconsistentlycited as one ofthe world'sgreatest livingguitarists, and has a best-selling, extensive lineof elite Gretschsignature model guitars bearinghis name. In2002, Setzerearned the privilege ofbeing one ofthe few musicians to be animatedin an episode of"The

Simpsons," alongside Mick Jagger, KeithRichards, and Tom Petty.

During thta same year of 2002, Setzer was personally requested to induct Chet Atkins into the 17th annual Rock and Roll HallOf Fame in Cleveland. In 2014, Setzerreceived the distinct honor of being asked by The Smithsonian Museum in Washington, D.C. to donate a replica of his original 1959 Gretsch 6120 "Stray Cat" guitar, joining an elite collection of musical instruments on display.

Starring Daniel Craig, Léa Seydoux,Christoph Waltz, Dave Bautista, Andrew Scott, Ralph FiennesDirected by Sam MendesSony Pictures

“Please, James Bond, save us once again!”That's not a line from this lastest spy mellerbased on the legendary 007, created by IanFleming – that's the assembled cry of theaterowners, who have seen recent cinema receipttallies drop more than at any recalled time inmodern film history (see our Media column formore). There's no question that this – the 24thBond film and the fourth to feature Daniel Craigas the debonair British agent – is the movie thattruly launches the holiday film season.

Directed again by Sam Mendes, whose

Skyfall presented the first aging, fallible James Bond, this new film(reportedly with a record budget of more than $300 million) sticks withthe formula: The extended opening scene, this time set in Mexico City,is, as usual, worth the price of admission all by itself, with action andspecial effects fairly bursting off the screen. It's a thrilling start, but afterthe more human, somewhat sheepish Bond so deftly portrayed by Craigthe last time out, this new epic fails to even hint at the last one, otherthan Ralph Fiennes replacing Judy Dench as M (killed by gunfire at the conclusion of the last film, forcing The Secret IntelligenceService to replace her).

This time out, Bond comes up against Oberhauser (a shockingly

restrained Waltz), whose history has led him to a maniacal obsession toobliterate 007. Everyone's fine – the lust interest this time, MadelineSwann (Seydoux), is typically breathtaking – but the lavish specialeffects tend to overwhelm the pacing, as the folks at Sony seemedintent on selling the aging Bond character to the young crowd that fillsmultiplexes to see superheroes. It's all louder, more violent, and noiser, but that's what seems to sell these days.

Spectre isn't the worst Bond Film (hi, Roger Moore), and not nearlythe best, but watching Bond is like a welcome visit from an old friend. You won't be shaken or stirred, but the rugged Craig's winning performance, as always, will leave fans entertained. – Cody Bell

Page 8: Good Times 1184

Who could have predicted that the New YorkMets would play into November, let aloneOctober this year? Ultimately, the Mets didn'thave enough overall talent to match up withthe Kansas City Royals, who came within an

eyelash of winning the 2014 World Series –then proved they weren’t a fluke from last year.It remains to be seen if the Mets will be able toprove the same thing in 2016.

The Mets will have to make a decision onseveral players who are now free agents, espcially outfielder Yoenis Cespedes and second baseman Daniel Murphy. Cespedeswas acquired from the Detroit Tigers at theJuly 31 trade deadline, and was a key reasonwhy the Mets leapfrogged over the Nationalsto the National League East division title.Unfortunately, Cespedes did little in the post-season, and showed a low baseball IQ in thefourth game of the World Series by booting aball in the centerfield, and took his sweet timepicking it up. He also was caught off first baseafter Lucas Duda hit a soft liner to Royals thirdbaseman Mike Moustakas to end that game, putting the Mets in a three games-to-one hole.Cespedes is expecting Fort Knox riches withhis next contract, and the Mets, of all teams, are not going to do that for him. The decisionon Murphy will be a tougher call for Mets general manager Sandy Alderson. Murphy is ahomegrown Met, and has played in Queens

since 2008. He is second in tenure only tofranchise face David Wright. Murphy had a hellof a post-season, belting six home runsbetween the NLDS and NLCS – yet became a

goat in Game 4 of the Series for muffing aground ball in the eighth inning. In fairness toMurphy, that was not a Bill Buckner-type error. It was a slowly hit ball that did not come up theway he expected, with Royals runners inmotion at the same time. With David Wright’shealth a perpetual issue, the Mets may needMurphy as an insurance policy at third base.Quality second basemen are not as plentiful asthey once were. Dilson Herrera, the Mets’ best

second base prospect, may need another yearin the minors.

The post-season also exposed the Mets'bullpen. Jeurys Familia was a reliable closer, in

spite of an ill-timed ninthinning Game 1homer to AlexGordon thateventually ledto an extra-inning defeatthat set thetone for the restof the Series. The problemwas TylerClippard, whopitched well forthe Mets afterhe wasacquired in lateJuly, butbecame a liability by mid-August. Hansel

Robles, Carlos Torres, Sean Gilmartin, andAddison Reed allowed too many inherited runsto score.

Although the New York Yankees were elimi-nated by the Houston Astros in the AmericanLeague wild card game, it’s safe to say thatAlex Rodriguez had a great post-season. Hewon raves from media critics and fans for hisinsightful work on Fox’s pre and post-gameshows. He also showed a lot of grace by

DarkStar Orchestra has beenendorsed by critics and fans andhas played alongside every livingmember of the original Grateful

Dead, as well as their soundmanof nearly three decades.

For more than 16 years, DarkStar Orchestra has embodied theGrateful Dead’s live experiencefor fans both old and too young tohave ever seen their own GratefulDead show, until recently.Recreating historic Grateful Deadset lists and intermittently craftingtheir own, Dark Star Orchestraoffers a continually evolving artistic outlet within the GratefulDead’s canon. Matching equipment, stage layout, andeven band members (various eras have included female vocalsor multiple drummers), Dark StarOrchestra’s determined commitment to “raising the Dead”has earned them high praise as

well as a following that echoesthat of the original band as fansfollowing DSO from town to town.

“Playing with Dark StarOrchestra feels just exactly like it felt when I was playing with The Grateful Dead,” said Donna Jean Godchaux-MacKay,the Grateful Dead’s vocalist and frequent DSO guest.

Fans and critics haven’t been the only people caught up in the spirit of a Dark Starshow. The band has featuredguest performances from fiveoriginal Grateful Dead members in Bob Weir, BillKreutzmann, Godchaux-MacKay, Vince Welnick, and Tom Constanten, and eventoured with longtime Dead soundman Dan Healy. "For us it’s a chance to recreate some of the magic thatwas created for us over the years," the veteran rhythm guitarist and vocalist Rob Eatonexplained. "We offer a sort of ahistorical perspective at what itmight have been like to go to ashow in 1985, 1978, or whenever. Even for Deadheadswho can say they’ve been to a hundred shows in the 90s, we offer something they never got to see live."

When Modest Mouse stormed thislavish club, it seemed everyone knew– the line of fans streched around thevenue to see the punk-influencedband. Although the lineup of thegroup has changed many times, it’s

clear their most ardent fans still support them.

Opening song “Strangers ToOurselves” was no surprise to thosefans, who have followed the bandthrough thick and thin. Issac Brock’svivid lyrics and uniquely stylish voicewere accompanied by his ambientguitar licks; adding to the pleasurewas violin by multi-instrumentalistLisa Molinari of Talkdemonic, whoperformed on vocals as well. The hit “As The Ocean Breathes Salty” followed, with Brock in full throttle.

Whipping his guitar about while some-how keeping his voice crisp and clear, the punk influence was fully apparent.

After “Lampshades On Fire,” theband’s recent single, the group wenton to play a variety of tracks from

their catalog, not all ofthem hits – it wasn't until“Float On” was playedthat casual listeners gotto hear a song theyimmediately recognized. The song was perfomredbrilliantly; the chorusbecame a sing-along forthe audience.“Doin' The Cockroach”showed how structurallypowerful Modest Mouseis, chopping down chords

before the song's climax. They took itdown a notch with the bright“Sleepwalking,” but kicked it back intohigh gear for set closer “Fly TrappedIn A Jar.”

Encoring with seven (!) songs,Mouse came out jamming with “DarkCenter Of The Universe,” which gotthe crowd moving, and they stayed upthrough the closer, “Parting Of TheSensory.” Modest Mouse clearly lefttheir mark on their fans once again. – Text & photos by Christopher Jon

For more than 30 years, there hasbeen one screaming banshee thathelped pave the way and preservethe genre some call grunge:Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell, who appeared here for two acousticperformances in support of his newalbum, Higher Truth.

Before the first song each night,Cornell made sure to shake somehands and pay homage to the mostly30-to-40 year-old crowdsthat packedthe shows.Never stayingin one spot formore than asong, Cornellpacked theshows (25songs on thefirst night, 26on the second) withcover songs, solo singles, and band favorites.

“Fell On Black Days,” “Blow UpThe Outside World,” “The Day I TriedTo Live,” and “Black Hole Sun,”among others, gave Soundgardenfans their grunge fill. Unfortunately,Audioslave fans only received twosongs per night, though “Like A

Stone” and “Wide Awake” wereexceptional. Temple Of The Dog fansgot to finally hear “Say Hello ToHeaven,” “Call Me A Dog,” and“Hunger Strike, which hadn’t beenperformed since the early 1990s.Cornell mixed in covers such as BobDylan’s “The Times They Are A-Changin’,” Michael Jackson’s “BillieJean,” and Led Zeppelin’s “ThankYou.” A little of everything meant a lot

of enjoymentfor the assem-bled throng.

Closing bothnights with“Higher Truth,”Cornellseemed to satisfy his fanswith his two-hour shows. To sit througha solo acousticperformance isin no way

comparable to a real rock show, but Cornell proved that if you take the time to mix in the right songs from your discography and keep your audience intrigued and involved, you will have success.– Text & photos by Christopher JonSmaragdas

Who: Veteran keyboardist Bill Popp and hisfamed quartet The Tapes have been performingtheir modernized British Invasion sounds for as longas we've been around – yet, through all the clubsand decades, Popp kept his day job as a plumber. On October 1, Popp celebrated his retirement frompipes and snakes with a massive show at New YorkCity's Parkside Lounge. Sea Monster, and The Bowery Boys performed.

The Artists & Their Sound: Popp isbacked by one of New York's longest-lasting units in bassist Mary Noecker, drum-mer Roger Foster, and guitarist GerryBarnas – and this very wordy yet veryenjoyable single is a reminder that while weall may not do what we really want to do fora living, sticking the course can have aworthwhile outcome. This band, as usual, istighter than a drum head.

The Songs: “Flushing This PlumbingJob Down The Drain,” “Rock To My Roll.”

Mass Hits: Top 40 has becomesomething very different than itwas from the 1950s through theearly part of the 90s. It is moretransitory than music media hasbeen throughout the courses ofthe past 50 years. A big reason for

this is mass media making somany choices available for theconsumption of tunes, so there isno universal radio station or MTV,if you will, where every-one experiences every-thing together at thesame time. The otherculprit is radio, whichoffers a very slim window as to what thesound of “now” is; atone point, the streetplayed a major role, asThe Beatles wererejected by radio in1963 until the kids saidotherwise. The same is true ofGuns 'N Roses, Nirvana, disco, and hip hop. Record store mingling made sparks fly (alongwith smart-ass record clerks), butthat component is no longer inplay. Trends, once frequent, arenow dormant in music.

Where, then, does that leaveus? We hear songs that allresemble each other, and vocalists (mostly female) thatresemble each other. The songsare chanted, repeated mantras, which serve as points of interest

for a week or two, and then blendinto the carpet or the wallpaper."Stars” these days is a relativeterm, as the performers are tooneedy and too available, and

thus, are mostly disposable after afew hits. Media mavens such asTaylor Swift and Justin Bieberhave learned to survive, by stuntsand headlines as much as bytunes. As such, none of their priorhits show up as recent gold or, in

the language of the industry, recurrents. Thedays of celebrating oldies, gold, or throwbacks, aredone, as it seems that

“ain't nobody got time for that”now. No bodies of work arelooked upon with pride – just now, just this second in time, is all that

matters at radio, which sets thetone for the culture.

Adele Again: So alongcomes Adele with her new album,25, diving into the middle of themuddle – and after 30 millioncopies sold of her previous album,21, the industry has their hopespinned on 25 “saving the recordbusiness,” a heavy cross to bear. There is no record business tosave, as there are no recordstores to be saved, except for ahandful popping up in each state, not nearly enough to support or

generate what once was.The one exciting thingthat I noticed while walking through Barnes &Noble was an aisle devoted to vinyl records, lovingly racked as theyonce were in SamGoody's, where I managed the recorddepartment in the mid-1970s at the Smith HavenMall store. If only a concerted effort were tobe made to sell vinyl andturntables to play themon, then things may

change. Collecting may startagain, and true fan bases may be established. Streaming is for the casual listener, but vinyl is for the true fan.

Meola's got the kind of voicethat can deliver swingin' honky-tonk, cool jazz-blues, or a gospel-pure "Hallelujah" with equal dex-
