Twenty-Ninth SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

GOOD SHEPHERD PARISH TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 18, 2015

Message from Monsignor René Mathieu:

(1) In a letter from Bishop Deeley referring to Good Shepherd Parish

reaching its 2015 Appeal goal: “It is gratifying to see what can happen

when we all work together for a common goal… Our pledges have

exceeded last year’s good numbers at this stage of the Appeal. As you

well know, there are so many needs in the diocese; without the funds

provided by the Appeal, we would not be able to provide assistance

that is given to parishes, social services, schools, hospitals and college campuses.

There is much good happening in our diocese as we serve the people entrusted to our

care. The income provided from the Appeal is an important part of the possibility of

doing what we are able to do. Please extend my sincere gratitude to your parishioners

for their continuing participation in the year’s Catholic Appeal and for their ongoing

support of the work of the Church, both at the parish and diocesan levels. It is only

by working together that we can bring the hope of the Gospel of Joy to our world.”

(2) American bishops have introduced a first mobile application called “USA Catholic

Church.” This is the only app that brings together information from all Catholic

sources: parishes, dioceses, the U.S. bishops and the Vatican. It includes religious

news, daily Scripture readings and more. The app is free to download from Google

Play and Apple iTunes. (3) Saint Joseph and Saint Mary Cemetery Alert! The

winter flower policy goes into effect in our parish cemeteries on Monday, October

21st. Please remove all artificial flowers by that date so that the annual fall cleanup

can begin in preparation for the winter months. (4) We continue to sponsor a variety

of small group encounters of every kind. These are opportunities to meet with like-

minded people interested in topics that touch upon ways that disciples of Jesus Christ

can grow in the knowledge of the faith, discern helpful prayer methods, or reflect on

issues of concern in our time. I am grateful to parishioners who help organize these

events and urge parishioners to take advantage. You can find descriptions of these

activities in our weekly bulletin and on our parish website

www.GoodShepherdParish.us. (5) Some time ago, someone asked me why people

often say “bless you” after someone sneezes. I hadn’t a clue so I went online and

found a brief explanation. The phrase is attributed to Pope Gregory the Great (540-

604), who is said to have spoken “God bless you” during a bubonic plague epidemic

in the 6th century, sneezing being one of the symptoms of the plague. Different

languages and cultures have similar or other expressions (such as “gesundheit”

[“health” in German]), but they seem to be related to the fact that a sneeze some-

times signals the onset of a cold or allergy. So “bless you” is a courteous way of

wishing someone good health. (6) Thank You of the Week: to parishioners and

priests who cooperated to make the summer seasonal Mass schedule possible. A lot

of hard work produced appreciative parishioners and visitors. Thank you!

JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Vol. 6 - Msgr. Tonne:

The children of our parish in Tokyo had been practicing their Christmas play for

days and knew all their lines.

Right on cue, the innkeeper said, “There is no room. You cannot stay here.”

No one was prepared, however, for Joseph when he turned to Mary and said, “I told

you to make reservations!” --William Grimm, M.M., Maryknoll Magazine

Donations to food pantries at all our churches:

This week: Cereal/Oatmeal/Powdered Milk

The Saco Food Pantry (and possibly others) has taken a hit in recent times in obtaining some of their regular items, on which they depend to reach 260 families/mo. Listed here are 11 “staples” with prices, to give ideas for what is helpful and utilized most at a Food Pantry:

Cereal ($2); Peanut Butter ($1.99); Jelly ($1.99); Spaghetti ($1); Sauce ($.99); Chicken soup ($1.25); Mac & Cheese ($1); Tuna ($.92);

Peaches ($1.35); Green Beans ($.69); Pork & Beans ($.94).

Thank you for your consideration in helping to feed the hungry in our neighborhoods! Your kindness and donations are cherished!

SACO MEALS REQUEST: We need regular coffee to serve at meals on Mondays & Thursdays. If you can help, please drop donations off in the Most Holy Trinity Church Hall. Thank you!

Reduce, Reuse and Recycle! This recycle program helps reduce millions of pounds of inkjet & laser cartridges from our landfills - and is a great fundraiser for our parish Faith

Formation programs. Look for boxes in all our churches. All inkjet cartridges are accepted. The larger laser/toner cartridges must be

name brand, no generic please. We thank you for your help!

SACO MEALS seeks a coordinator to oversee the program, which serves 2 meals/week on Monday & Thursday. On Thursday they will be in charge of an organized group of dedicated volunteers and see

that the meal runs smoothly from prep to service. This is a great opportunity for an individual or couple. Current coordinators will continue to work with new coordinator until such time they are

comfortable with all aspects of the job (approx. 10 hrs/wk). Please call Renee Morin at 282-3557 for more information.

WANTED: CHILDREN’S BOOKS— Social Justice

& Peace is sponsoring a book drive benefiting the

St. Louis Child Development Center on Pool Rd,

in honor of Sr. Cecilia Saluzzi.

Donations of gently-used children’s books are greatly

appreciated. Boxes are available at all churches.

St. Philip’s Annual Harvest Fair Oct. 31st & Nov. 1st

The Harvest Fair is quickly approaching.

To make this year's fair the best ever, we are still in need of help from Good Shepherd Parish parishioners, and family & friends of St. Philip Church.

Dear Parishioners: the BAKED GOODS TABLE at the Harvest Fair will need donations of goods: cookies, pies, breads, fudge. These items can be dropped off, Friday, October 30 (in the church hall between 2 o’clock and 7 o’clock)

OR donations can be dropped off any time Saturday or Sunday during the fair.

The Harvest Fair is also in need of volunteers to help set up: the week of October 18th and week of October 25th. Day & evening volunteers are needed. Please call Gisele or Donna (at their numbers below) to verify times.

Following are a few ideas for our Penny Raffle tables: We need gift cards to local businesses, restaurants or garden shops. Also, outdoor living accessories, toys, jewelry & fitness items. Other suggestions are items donated from your business or employer, (ie: oil changes, car detailing, paddle board & kayak rentals). Families may also want to donate passes to museums, theater tickets, or sporting events.

The craft tables need your help with donations of locally crafted items such as: knitted hats, mittens, fingerless gloves, jewelry, artwork, quilts and baskets.

Donated items can be dropped off before or after each of the two Masses

or you may call Gisele Lynes at 499-7453 or Donna Bilodeau at 499-7490.

The fair will also be having the Adult & Children's Treasure Chest Tables and Baked Goods Table, as well as our famous homemade pork pies.

We are open to all ideas and suggestions. We look forward to having a successful St. Philip Fair!

October 24 (Sat): World Youth Day Benefit Concert & Dance

My Sister’s Keeper is a group of local women who make a commit-

ment to serve as mentors to incarcerated women. Each member is

assigned a woman in need of a mentor to help her transition from

living in jail to living outside of jail. Members make their own weekly

schedule to meet for about an hour with their “sister” who lives in the

Southern Maine Re-Entry Center in Alfred, Maine, until her sched-

uled release date. If you would like to consider becoming a member of

this group, please call Jura Litchfield (207-468-5941), who would be

happy to answer your questions and let you know when the next

opportunity for training will be held. Training is an orientation to the

issues facing women who have been in jail and are beginning

to imagine life outside of jail.

GOOD SHEPHERD PARISH TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 18, 2015

With the Christmas Fair less than a month away, we are doing quite a bit behind the scene in preparation for the Parish’s Largest Single

crafts at home and as small groups; we will be making ‘Leo’s Fudge’; having a taffy pull at Marie’s; books and new and like new items

are being accumulated for drop off the week of the fair; major raffle tickets are being bought and sold; pickles, relishes and so on are

being canned for donation; Money, certificates and Gift Items for the Penny Raffle are coming in. There is so much going on and so

much excitement and anticipation in the air. Please keep those donations coming in; I am so proud of all of you and your generosity.

Be sure to invite your family and friends. This fair is for all of you to enjoy. I like to call it: an occasion for Fun, Food and Fellowship.

Nothing like turning leaves and a chill in the air to bring to mind the warmth of home and promise of a good turkey dinner. The comforts of home are also on the minds of dozens of Thornton's international students hoping to spend their Thanksgiving vacation with an American family. So as your family begins to prepare for the upcoming holiday, please consider inviting one or two to share this special time with you. I have the privilege of working with amazing community members, who generously offer our boarding students a home away from home. I also get to work with a lot of great teens, who are incredi-bly appreciative of the hospitality extended to them. And both student and family are often enriched by the cultural exchange and special friendships that develop during these vacation stays.

Please note: Thanksgiving vacation begins Tues., Nov. 24, & ends Sun., Nov. 29, and anyone who decides to take part will be provided with a small stipend to off-set the cost of hosting. If you would like to participate in Thornton Academy's Vacation Family Program and open your home to a student or 2 during Thanksgiving break, please give me a ring. I'd love to hear from you! -Jade Elliott, 602.4457; [email protected]
