GOOD SHEPHERD PARISH
Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: (1) This weekend is
Commitment Weekend for the 2015 Catholic Appeal. Prayer for the
Success of the 2015 Catholic Appeal: O God our Creator and loving Father, without any merit of our own, you freely gave us our existence
and enriched it with your precious gifts of faith, hope and love. Help us
shine our light and give as generously as we ourselves have received
from you. We offer the gifts of ourselves, our time, talents and treasures
as our true acts of faith that reflect our love for you and our neighbor. Accept our
offerings as a token of gratitude for all you have done. Help us to reach out to others as
you, our Lord and God, have reached out to us. May our faithful stewardship bear
witness to the love of Jesus Christ in our lives. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our
Lord. Amen. (2) Don’t forget that EWTN’s Marcus Grodi will speak this Sunday,
May 17, 6:30 pm at St. Joseph Church. All are welcome. (3) Please pray for the soul of
one of our diocesan priests, Fr. Harold Nicknair, 84, who died on May 5. Born in Winterville, Maine, his priesthood assignments brought him to Rockland, Limestone,
South Portland, Auburn, Bingham and Gorham. His funeral Mass was celebrated
Friday, May 8 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, Portland. May his soul
and the souls of all the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace.
(4) Assignment of priests: Effective July 1, Fr. Normand E. Carpentier will retire
from active ministry. He previously served as pastor of St. Margaret in Old Orchard
Beach (1993-2003). Since July 2009, Fr. Carpentier has been parochial vicar at All
Saints Parish in Brunswick/Bath/Boothbay Harbor/Harpswell/Richmond/Newcastle.
Effective July 6, Fr. Robert L. Lupo has been appointed to succeed Fr. Carpentier as
parochial vicar at All Saints Parish. He served as parochial vicar here in Good Shep-
herd Parish in 2008-2011. Since 2013, he has been pastor of St. Kateri Tekakwitha Parish in Calais/Perry/Indian Township/Baileyville/Pembroke/Eastport. Effective June 1,
Fr. Emile H. Dubé (who served in Good Shepherd Parish as a seminarian) has been
appointed pastor at Our Lady of the Snows Parish (Dexter/Dover-Foxcroft/Milo) and
St. Agnes Parish in Pittsfield. Since last October, Fr. Dube has been parochial vicar in
the Bucksport/Ellsworth/Bar Harbor cluster. You can read details about these and
other assignments at www.portlanddiocese.org. (5) We are resuming a 5:30 pm Satur-
day evening Mass at Saint Brendan’s Chapel in Biddeford Pool, beginning next Sat-
urday, May 23. A Sunday morning Mass will be added later in the season. I am grate-
ful to Fr. Ron Labarre on whom we generally depend to make this additional Mass
possible during the summer season. I also welcome back to the parish Msgr. Richard
Sniezyk, retired from the Diocese of Springfield, MA, who will help us from time to
time, especially on Saturdays at St. Philip in Lyman. (6) Priests of the parish will lead Memorial Day services at Saint Joseph’s Cemetery (1:30 pm), and at Saint Mary’s
Cemetery (2:30 pm) next Sunday, May 24. All are invited. You may want to bring a
lawn chair. The events will be cancelled should there be bad weather. (7) Thank You
of the Week: To those who cooperated with parish staff to prepare our youth for
Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion last Sunday. It sure was hot and humid!
Thank you!
JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Vol. 5 - Msgr. Tonne: Bill: “Did you ever see one of those machines they have to tell when a man is lying?”

Easter Communion: In the USA, the obligation
to receive Holy Communion at least once a year
may be satisfied from the First Sunday of Lent to
Trinity Sunday (May 31). For a just cause, this
“Easter Duty” may be fulfilled at some other time
of the year.
“It is right for you to seek God before and above
everything else, because the majesty of God wishes
you to receive what you ask for. This will also
make you more ready to serve God and will enable
you to love him more perfectly.”

MY FRIEND AND I STORYTIME Fridays, 11-11:30 am in May
Parishioners, come and join our librarian as she has a storytime for young children (ages 0 to kindergarten) at Saint James School. Mrs. Souza starts and ends each session with a song. She reads from quality literature each week and if time permits, has a related activity.
Grandparents, parents, or any parish-ioner can come with a child under school age. You must stop in the office and sign in, and then you will be directed into the St. James Library.
There is no fee and it is a good oppor-tunity to expose your child to quality literature, meet other parishioners with children the same age as yours, and see St. James School.
Please fill out the form below and help us create a database of
alumni! You can email it to [email protected]
or mail to: St. James School, Alumni Database,
25 Graham St, Biddeford, ME 04005.
Saint James School had a "Popsicle emergency" on the first day that it was in the 80's. Students were told to follow the evacuation procedure to proceed out to their designated spots on the school yard. After it was confirmed that all students were present, they were treated to a healthy juice frozen treat and then a whole school recess followed. Pictured here is the prekindergarten enjoying their treats. We have to practice drills in a variety of ways, so this, I think, is the students’ favorite evacuation drill!
Saint James School is serious about teaching about academics and faith. Doing service to others is also an important compo-nent. But we are also a family that can have fun! If you want to be a part of this kind of school, come and take a tour before students leave for the summer to see what it is like. We have a dynamic preschool for students when they reach three years of age and the kindergarten through eighth grade cannot be beat! In exit interviews with the eighth graders (if they were a recent addition to Saint James School), they all stated that they wished they had been a part of Saint James School earlier. We have small class sizes, and we teach the whole child. Students learn about their faith. You can always tell a Saint James student because they are knowledgeable, faith-filled and they are respectful and kind. Remember, we have a reduced rate for active parishioners, and we have scholarship money available. Give your child or your grandchild the gift of a Saint James education! Go tell a friend!

Students at Saint James School had a musical
performance by Jay Mankita. Jay Mankita sang
songs from his Eat like A Rainbow CD and
The Lean Green Clean Up Machine CD for
students from prekindergarten through eighth
grade. He gave the
middle school some parts to perform and
the entire school hall was rocking with
songs about healthy eating and green
ideas.
Jay Mankita is a Parent's Choice Award

that he performed for Saint James

Seeking Mentors who can drive to Alfred once a week: My Sister’s Keeper is a group of local women who make a commit-
ment to serve as mentors to incarcerated women. Each member is
assigned a woman in need of a mentor to help her transition from
living in jail to living outside of jail. Members make their own week-
ly schedule to meet for about an hour with their “sister” who lives in
the Southern Maine Re-Entry Center in Alfred, Maine, until her
scheduled release date. If you would like to consider becoming a
member of this group, please call Jura Litchfield (207-468-5941),
who would be happy to answer your questions and let you know
when the next opportunity for training will be held. Training is an
orientation to the issues facing women who have been in jail and are

SACO MEALS PROGRAM: HELP REQUESTS
Saco Meals Program desperately needs persons for a food pick up
at the Kennebunk Hannaford store EVERY Monday morning. The
volunteer must be able to pick up 20-30 lb. boxes. If a weekly
commitment isn’t possible, we are looking to see if instead there
may be people who are interested in committing to a regular
pickup once or twice a month.
Please call Anita Raymond for further details: 937-2399.

The nationwide Fortnight for Freedom: Freedom to
Bear Witness will take place from June 21 to July 4, 2015, a
period in which our liturgical calendar celebrates a series of great
martyrs who remained faithful in the face of persecution by political
power: St. Thomas More and St. John Fisher, St. John the Baptist,
SS. Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome.
The theme of this year's Fortnight will focus on the "freedom to
bear witness" to the truth of the Gospel.
SPECIAL EVENTS AT THE CATHEDRAL: As part of the Fortnight celebration in the diocese, Bishop Robert P. Deeley will celebrate a special Mass at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in
Portland on Thursday, June 25, at 12:15 pm. In the evening of June 25, Monsignor John E. Kozar, president
of the Catholic Near East Welfare Association and the Pontifical Mission for Palestine, and the former
national director of the Pontifical Mission Societies in the U.S., will speak about the plight of persecuted
Christians in the Middle East at a special gathering at the Cathedral, starting at 6 pm. All are encouraged to
attend the Mass and special presentation. For more information about the Fortnight for Freedom, visit

Saco Meals Program says “Thank You”: The first 4 months of 2015
have been a huge success for Saco Meals Program, serving over 2500
meals so far. We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to
the business sponsors, along with the many individuals who have been
so generous in 2015, with monetary donations and gifts of time to help
our program succeed. We have several local businesses that not only
support us with donations, but their employees volunteer their time
cooking and serving our guests once a month. These businesses are:
Saco&Biddeford Savings Institution, Biddeford Savings Bank, Union
Church at Biddeford Pool and American Medical Systems/John Provost.
--To the following people who shared their faith
with us as they so reverently brought Lenten Vespers to us on the Sunday afternoons of Lent: Guy Cadorette, Ken Greenleaf, Josh Houde,
Doris Buonomo, Liz Williams, Sue Anne Bellavance, Lisa Lambert, Claudette Nadeau, Anne-Marie Brunelle, Mary Thompson, Claire Bru-nelle, Jerry Letellier, Don Bisson, Jackie Fontaine, Fran Gagnon, and Helene Fortier. Thank you, also, for the faithful people that attended. --To the talented and crafty ladies that helped to create the beautiful
counted cross-stitchings that have been lovingly wrapped around all of the Good Shepherd Paschal Candles: Anita Sanchegrin, Bernadette Courtois, Sylvie Boisselle, Dorothy Schlueb, Elaine Dubois, Priscille Binette, and Rachel Bolduc. --From the Holy Cross Fathers and Our Lord of Hope Parish in Canto
Grande, Peru, for the collection that periodically gets sent from Good Shepherd Parish. FYI: Our Lord of Hope became Most Holy Trinity’s sister parish years ago and the contents of our “Pennies for Peru” jar were sent regularly. For those who missed the announcements sever-al years ago, the jar has been moved to the office for safety purposes. Feel free to drop in any time and add to the collection. --From Kristen Maile of the Good Shepherd Food Bank for the check
sent from the collection taken at Good Shepherd Parish’s ecumenical service celebrating the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity.

Second Collection Next Weekend: Catholic School Sponsorship ‒ This collection assists any active parishioners who send their children
to St. James School. They receive the benefit of parish assistance, rep-
resenting the willingness of the parish to support their choice of a
Catholic education. Eligible families receive tuition relief indirectly
since the parish is funding a part of the total cost of education.
“Parishioners at Good Shepherd Parish have a long history of showing their commitment to the Diocese of Portland by supporting the Catholic Appeal. At the end of the month, all parish fami-lies will be asked to make their pledge to the 2015 Catholic Appeal. We ask that you give prayerful consideration to this important request from the Bishop. The Appeal funds the agencies and ministries that support thousands of our brothers and sisters in need across the state of Maine. We hope that you will respond generously. We thank you in advance for your participation in this vitally important initiative.”
