Prayer of Intercession: For Church leaders, may they guide us faithfully, even in the midst of conflict,

we pray to the Lord...

Message from Monsignor René Mathieu: (1) National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catho-

lic education in the United States. It is being observed January 31− Feb-

ruary 6 with the theme of “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith,

Knowledge and Service.” All parishioners are welcome to participate in

the various public events related to Saint James School. (2) Beginning

this Tuesday, February 2, adult parishioners (18+) are invited to partici-

pate in Doors of Mercy − an 8-week Lenten project. More information is printed else-

where in this bulletin. (3) World Day of Consecrated Life: As we approach the annual

celebration of consecrated life on February 2, I again recall how I have been personally

enriched by such women and men: Ursuline sisters taught me in grammar school,

Brothers of Christian Instruction in junior high, Assumptionist brothers & priests in

high school & college, and Jesuit priests at university during my seminary years (I still

remember the formidable Sister Monica who taught me New Testament Greek in the

seminary; I struggled mightily with the subject matter and regularly sat in the back row,

hiding behind a tall student, hoping she wouldn’t see and call on me)! My mother’s

aunt was a Missionary Sister of Our Lady of Africa, my father’s aunt and sister were

both Sisters of Charity of St. Hyacinthe (“Grey Nuns” associated with St. Mary’s Hos-

pital in Lewiston); my father’s cousin was a provincial of the Brothers of Christian In-

struction. As a priest, I have served alongside Sisters of St. Joseph, Sisters of the

Presentation of Mary, Sisters of Mercy, Holy Rosary Sisters, Good Shepherd Sisters,

Dominican Sisters, and Capuchin, Vincentian & Holy Cross priests. I am sure I am

forgetting some fine people, but you can see why I so much admire these women and

men religious who have profoundly enriched my life. Here in Good Shepherd Parish,

we welcome missionaries every summer who usually are members of various religious

communities, but I marvel at how consecrated women and men contributed and continue

to contribute to church life in our community; there are many parishes in Maine these

days who only rarely experience the ministry of even a single religious. We should all

be grateful for the special vocation to consecrated life that enriches the Catholic Church

in so many fruitful ways. (4) The survey of parishioners announced last month contin-ues through February 10. All parishioners 18 and older are urged to participate. The

content of individual responses is confidential; I will receive a summary after the re-

sults are tabulated to help parish leaders and I plan for the future. The easiest way to

participate is to go to the parish website. Paper copies should also be available at the

parish office and at all church locations. (5) Jubilee Year of Mercy: Our diocesan

website provides a regularly updated feature on the Year of Mercy. Each month, one of

the works of mercy is highlighted with prayers and testimony from some involved

Mainer. Included is a weekly suggestion related to the monthly topic. I am printing that

suggestion in my weekly message (beginning last weekend). As I noted 3 weeks ago,

this month’s highlighted work of mercy is clothe the naked, and this week’s suggestion

is: “Do you know someone who struggles to fit in, perhaps even in your parish? Clothe

them with dignity by making sure they know they are welcome.” (6) Thank You of the

Week: To the sponsors and godparents who are accompanying our elect and candidates

on their journey of faith. Thank you!

JOKES PRIESTS CAN TELL, Vol. 6 - Msgr. Tonne: The minister’s daughter returned home at three o’clock in the morning from a dance.

Her father greeted her sternly.

“Good morning, child of the devil,” said he. Respectfully and demurely, she replied, “Good morning, father.”

“This was the method that Jesus used with the apostles. He put up with their ignorance and roughness and even their infidelity. He treated sinners with a kindness and affection that caused some to be shocked, others to be scandal-ized, and still others to hope for God's mercy. And so he bade us to be gentle and humble of heart.”

GOOD SHEPHERD PARISH FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 31, 2016

Urgent Request: Are you called to respond to this Work of Mercy? SACO MEALS is seeking a coordinator to oversee the program, which

serves 2 meals/week on Monday & Thursday. On Thursday they will be

in charge of an organized group of dedicated volunteers to see that the

Meal runs smoothly from prep to service. This is a great opportunity for

an individual or couple. Current coordinators will continue to work with

new coordinator until such time they are comfortable with all aspects of

the job (approx. 10 hrs/wk). Please call Renee Morin at 282-3557 fmi.

HOLY WEEK CHOIR REHEARSALS: Please consider being part of our Joint Choir for the Holy Week Services. Our rehearsals will be Thursdays, 6:30-8:00 pm, at St. Joseph Church, beginning Feb. 11. This is a 4-part choir, and we sing mostly 'acapella' for these holy days. It is great fun, we enjoy singing with others from our greater parish community, and being in this choir greatly enriches our Holy Week spirituality. Questions? See Helene after Masses, or email [email protected]. Thanks!

We appreciate all the prayers and support on behalf of our catechumens and candidates.

The Rite of Sending will take place on Sun., Feb. 7 at Most Holy Trinity during 8:30 am Mass. As a community, we will be sending them forth to be received by Bishop Deeley during the Rite of Election/Call to Continuing Conversion to be held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception in Portland on Sun., Feb. 14.

Thank you for extending yourself to them in fellowship and providing this sense of community.

Eucharistic Ministers to the Homebound and Sick Those within our parish who request communion in our community continues to grow, and the need for more Eucharistic ministers to serve in this capacity increases. If

you are not yet a Eucharistic minister, or, if you are already a Eucharistic minister for Mass and would like to bring communion to the homebound, we would like to invite you to contact the parish office at 282-3321. Thank you for your consideration.

The Disciple Maker Index Survey Is Open through Feb. 10 Please help us participate by completing the 10-15 minute survey

as soon as possible.

If we had your email, the survey should have been emailed to you by [email protected].

If you don’t use email, or didn’t get your email to us in time, please use the generic survey link, to complete the survey: http://www.surveygizmo.com/s3/2334891/df06576fe3d3-Generic; or find it at our parish website: http://www.goodshepherdparish.us.

You can obtain a paper copy in all of our churches or get one from the parish office at 271 Main St., Saco; 207-282-3321.

The survey is only available through Ash Wednesday, Feb. 10, and asks you to reflect on your own spiritual growth, and to provide feed-back on what efforts the parish is doing to help you grow. All responses are confidential, and the parish will only receive information about the community as whole. We are trying to get the highest response rate possible. This information will be invaluable to Msgr. Mathieu, and our various ministries as we plan ahead and try to be the best disciples we can be. We will receive the results this summer, at which time we will share what we have learned with the entire parish. Thank you for help-ing with this important project! For questions on or about the survey call the DMI Phone Hotline at 1-844-DMI-DESK.
