Ordinary Time

OFFERTORY GIFTS: It is really nice when people bring up the Gifts at Offertory Time during Mass. So, a table will be placed in the center aisle with the wine and hosts for Mass. If the Mass is for a family member, please inform an usher that you will gladly take up the gifts that day. I can add gifts if you should have more than 2 people. I like to give the children a cup to carry if they can. It’s important for them to be involved. Tell the usher how many you have and he will be able to get cups for all. N.F.P.: What is that? N.F.P. stands for Natural Family Planning. Today we celebrate Natural Family Planning Promotion Day in the Diocese of Pittsburgh!

Everyone likes a sure thing. Whether we are buying a car, making an investment, taking on a new job, or getting married; it would be great if we could know that everything would turn out well. It’s only natural to desire some guarantee of success in life.

When it comes to marriage, however, the overall odds of success in our world today are quite discouraging. The rate of divorce, as you may know, is nearly half the rate of marriage.

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could improve our chances of success for a happily married life? The GOOD NEWS is that couples who practice Natural Family Planning, experience a remarkably low divorce rate—5% or less, (depending on the particular survey.)

The reason for this is because NFP couples develop mutual respect, self-discipline, good communication skills, a real true sense of intimacy, a profound understanding of shared responsibility, and total self-giving when it comes to their decisions about having children….All of these things are the very good, true blessings for the Covenant of Marriage.

Natural Family Planning is safe, healthy, highly effective, and morally acceptable. ALL married couples of child-bearing age owe it to themselves to seriously consider this positive means of living out the Sacrament.

For more information, contact the Office for Adult and Family Life, Diocese of Pittsburgh, 111 Boulevard of the Allies, Pittsburgh, PA 15222, or call 412-456-3160. The email address is [email protected] or you may visit the web site: www.diopitt.org/nfp

WORLD MISSION SUNDAY World Mission Sunday will be celebrated around the world next weekend, October 19-20. The theme for this year is “Do Good on Earth” taken from St. Therese of Lisieux, Patroness of the Missions, and it is a call to put faith in action. Since his election in March, Pope Francis has shown the world his true missionary heart and his great love for the poor and vulnerable, reminding us that the Church, at every level and by its very nature, is missionary.

Pope Francis’ principal means of vital support for the 1,150 mission dioceses in the world is through the Society of the Propagation of the Faith. World Mission Sunday, which is an essential experience of worship, catechesis, and worldwide sacrifice, is the principal means of funding for the Society of the Propagation of the Faith.

Please respond next weekend in the second collection as you see fit and are able.

NOTIFICATION: The following notification is in this week’s Pittsburgh Catholic. However since new things pop up now and then which do not fall under the Catholic faith I wanted all of you to be aware and informed of our official Catholic position on this adventure.

Notification Recently, the Diocese of Pittsburgh was informed that a group known as Santa Maria Magdalena, ORCC, will operate at the former St. Casimir Church. So no confusion exists regarding the canonical status of Santa Maria Magdalena, ORCC, and the Paraclete Center, the following notification is issued by the Department for Canonical Services of the Diocese of Pittsburgh. The purpose of this notification is to assist Catholics in understanding that they cannot participate in services at its “Paraclete Center” and be considered members in good standing with the Catholic Church. The Christian faithful are to know that free and willful participation with this group, including reception of the sacraments, implies separation from the Catholic Church. This is a serious matter that no one should take upon himself or herself lightly. Additionally, the Diocese of Pittsburgh no longer permits the celebration of the sacraments at the former St. Casimir Church, which was closed in 1992.

Love and Peace,

Fr. Semler
