SUMMER SUNDAYS IN THE SON

Most of us have said “The Lord’s Prayer” hundreds of times in our lives. We have recited it at funerals, weddings, and in worship on Sundays. The truth is most of us have said it so many times that we often do it without really thinking about its meaning. It is so easy to say it from memory and spit out the words without thinking about what we are saying. But what are we pray-ing when we pray the Lord’s Prayer? What do we mean when we pray it? Why is this prayer so special? During the month of August we will be learn-ing the truths that Jesus wants His followers to know as He taught and mod-eled this prayer before them.

UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT

An illiterate couple just had come to faith in Christ as Savior and Lord and were baptized. They began to meet with a small group in their church who dressed alike for service projects. The men wore red shirts while engaging in missions work for their community. The wife of the couple decided that she would make a shirt for her husband to match the attire of the other men in the group. He then wore his new shirt to the next outing; but after coming home he had a look of disappointment on his face. He said, “but the other guy’s shirts had something printed on them and his did not.” His wife, undaunted by her inability to read, sewed three words on his shirt which she copied from a sign in a store window across from the apartment where they resided. He wore it to the next meeting and came home bubbling with joy. He said, “all the men really like his shirt because it described the change they had seen taking place in his life.” It turned out that his wife had written, “UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT.” (Insights for Preachers, April 1993)

St. Paul in Romans 6:11 said, “So you also should consider yourselves dead to the power of sin and live to God through Jesus Christ.” (NLT). The word “consider” in the original language of text is a term used for finances. Paul is wanting you to know that you can “write it down” in your ledger. You can use it to balance the book of your life. The new life you have received from Jesus Christ is as real and certain as a math accountant would use. In other words, in God’s ledger your debt is wiped out. You died with Christ at Calvary. You were buried with Christ in baptism and you have been raised with Christ from the dead to new resurrected life. Therefore, as your account has “been paid in full” by what Christ did for you on the cross . . . you are free . . . your sins are forgiven . . . you are holy . . . you have new life in Christ . . . you really are “under new management.” He paid a debt that you were unable to pay. Therefore, you need to exhibit a life-style each day that will reflect your new status that you have received.

Remember as you live out your faith, each day you need to ask God to work in your heart, helping you to be transformed into a person who loves God, your neighbor, and each other. I invite you each morning, when you arise from your time of rest and sleep to do a couple of things . . .

First of all . . . remind yourself that you are a cross-marked, baptized child of God under new management. Then secondly . . .

Ask Jesus to help you be obedient to Him since He is your new manager.

As you do this, I guarantee you . . . it will make a difference in your words, attitudes, dealing and facing temptation, your relationship with others, your connection to the church, and even how you view and feel about yourself. Jesus Christ will be your all in all. Jesus died for sin that you to might die to sin. As you die to your own desires, preferences and tastes, others will see that you are indeed, “UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT.”

The Food Pantry also needs volunteers to be placed on the CALL LIST for assistance if there should be a need.
