St. Paul’s Church is People from the Rector
The Vestry and I began a process at our
last meeting – well, we got to our promised
stopping time, so we are doing it as
“homework” – which we trust will help
cast a vision for our common life for the
months and years ahead. Part of that proc-
ess requires us to understand more fully
who we are as an organization, who we are
as a family. So I’ve had occasion lately to
do some deliberate thinking about who we
are – and I thought I might as well share…
St. Paul’s Episcopal Church has been
at the heart of Henderson since its founding
on All Hallows’ e’en 1831. Originally wor-
shipping in common meeting house on
Henderson’s public square, then from 1838
in a church built at the corner of Third and
Main Streets, in 1860 the congregation
consecrated the brick church at the corner
of Center and Green that we call home to
this day. The nave, choir and sanctuary are
well known in the area for the beautiful
stained glass windows, for the brass pulpit,
lectern and fixtures, and for the magnifi-
cent trusses that remind even strangers of
the ship that carries Christ’s Church over
the tempestuous waves of life. Though St.
Paul’s has been expanded over the years,
the beauty and holiness of our worship
space still comforts and challenges the con-
gregation and awes visitors.
St. Paul’s Episcopal Church is much
more, however, than the bricks and mortar,
the plaster and lath, or even the brass and
wood. St. Paul’s is the people who have
worship and prayed, learned and grown,
cared and served for over a century and
three-quarters.
St. Paul’s is people who worship in the
cadences that brought the English language
to its flower, with prayers that have
changed little in the centuries since the
English Reformation, far from vain repeti-
tion but filled with the power of the prayers
of the great cloud of witnesses that have lit

the path into the future. And St. Paul’s is
people who in their worship balance the
reading and commentary on Holy Scripture
with participation in the Sacraments of
Baptism and Holy Communion by which
we are connected in a very real way with
the Body of Christ.
St. Paul’s is people who are very much
aware that any one human being does not
have all the answers, nor possess all the
truth, that growth toward a fuller under-
standing of God is only to be achieved by
wrestling with Scripture, and sometimes
with one another. And St. Paul’s is people
who are nonetheless convinced that the
truth is indeed to be found in such struggle
and growth, that our Creator and Redeemer
reveals himself to us in Scripture, in the
traditions of the Church, and the Spirit-
enlightened reason that makes us children
of God.
St. Paul’s is people who find ways to
serve Christ by serving one another in
times of joy and celebration with good
food and good friends, with conversation
and with laughter, and by serving one an-
other in times of sorrow and challenge with
all those same things. And St. Paul’s is
people who reach out generously, with
their resources and with their own hands,
to share the gifts that God has given with
the community, with the nation, and with
the world.
St. Paul’s is people from the sixth and
seventh generation of families who call this
their spiritual home, who have, through
these many years, helped build this Church
and helped build Henderson. And St.
Paul’s is people who have come to this
community as recently as yesterday and
have found here a place of challenge and of
rest, a place of journey and the comfort of
home.
Peace and joy,

• Congratulations to Mitchell and Kelly Deep on the birth of a son, William Mitchell Deep, IV, born March 23, 2012. William has two older sisters, Ashby and Addyson. Grandpar-ents are Mitchell and Vickie Deep and Great Aunt is Michele Deep.
• Congratulations to Tom Windberg and Donna Hefner, who were married at St. Paul’s on April 20, 2012.
• A special thank you to all who helped with the Celebration of Renewal of Our Ministry and to everyone who helped clean up the grounds in preparation for Easter.
• Also a special thank you goes to Michelle and Zoe Green for cleaning and organizing the nursery.
At Sky VBS, kids imagine what it would be like to bounce among the clouds, soar with eagles, and reach for the
stars. The Bible comes to life in new and powerful ways as kids explore why nothing is impossible with God. Through
every experience, kids find that they can trust God.
VBS Registration for both participants and volunteers has taken off and there’s still time to join! Forms are avail-
able in the parish hall on the table under the display case or you can register online by visiting
https://www.groupvbspro.com/vbs/ez/hendersonchurches/gpgs/Home.aspx
Thank you to everyone who has already signed up to support VBS with donations! While each of the churches pays
a portion of the cost for program materials, we also divide the supply lists. This year St. Paul’s is responsible for provid-
ing the ingredients for snacks (see list in parish hall) and the theme decorations. If you have items that lend themselves
to the SKY theme, please let Michelle Green know. Materials will be returned to the owners.
Every Sunday in May during coffee hour time, there will be a
craft activity for all to join. That’s right, this isn’t just for the kids!
Since St. Paul’s is responsible for decorating, all of our creations
will go towards transforming our space into the sky!
Important Dates for Vacation Bible School
Sunday, May 20 from 12:30-2:00 p.m. will be volunteer training at St. Paul’s. All the churches will meet
here for lunch, fellowship, an overview of what will happen at VBS and where stations will be set up. Youth
who will be assisting and crew leaders need to plan on attending this event.
Plan to join us on Thursday, May 31 from 6-8 p.m. in Central Park for the Henderson Churches VBS
Kick-off party! Talk to Michelleif you are willing to volunteer that evening. The celebration will include
refreshments, old-fashioned games and relays for the kids, and registration. It is not too late to invite some-
one to join us! This is a family event and all are welcome!
All hands on deck Sunday, June 3 following the 10:00 service! We will be decorating St. Paul’s for our
SKY theme! Any help would be greatly appreciated! The other churches will be bringing over their sup-
plies to set up stations and classrooms and we will be “installing” a temporary backdrop in the sanctuary.
We take to the SKY! Monday-Thursday, June 4-7, from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. Lunch will be served at approxi-
mately 11:30 a.m. daily. (Just a reminder, no VBS on Friday.)
You can contact Michelle Green at 831-2394 or email [email protected] with questions.
Youth Happenings Leslie Newman—Thanks to those who helped with the
egg hunt on Easter morning! As usual, it was fast and
chaotic, and fun was had by all. If you got home with
Easter baskets or plastic eggs you would like to recycle
through EYC, please bring them to church, and you
will be likely to see them again next year. This year,
there was leftover candy in only one egg!
Parents and youth met after church on April 15 to
discuss schedules, hopes and expectations for the long-
awaited confirmation class for youth. Consensus led us
to start that class April 25 and it will continue on to
meet at 7:30 Wednesday nights through May 23. Sup-
per will be provided. There will be monthly activities
during the summer, and then class will resume when
school starts, with the day and time to be determined
based on our kids’ busy schedules. Bishop Terry White
will visit St. Paul’s, including Confirmation of those
presented, for Sunday morning, January 27, 2013.
Summer camp at All Saints makes for lifetime
memories. And thanks to St. Ann’s Guild and the leg-
acy of Margaret Stanley any St. Paul’s youth can at-
tend. The camp schedule is available on brochures in
the Parish Hall and on the Diocesan website.
We look forward to jubilant participation from chil-
dren, youth and adults, as St. Paul’s hosts VBS this
year. Thanks to Michelle Green for making it happen.
Congrats Class of 2012!!! Leslie Newman—John Redding will graduate from
Reitz Memorial High School in Evansville on May 19.
John is cradle Episcopalian, and lifetime member of St.
Paul’s. He has been a member of EYC and has served
as an acolyte. Not only is he a handsome guy, but John
is a very bright young man with a keen sense of humor,
and he has a wide variety of interests and friends. John
has been a member of the Memorial dive team, and has
competed on the state level until this year, when he was
sidelined by a motorcycle accident. John has been an
active motocross rider, and has raced at the top level of
national competition. We are looking forward to seeing
him dressed up in prom finery next weekend, and grate-
ful that his recovery from foot and ankle injuries has
been remarkable, so he can dance the night away! John
will attend the University of Kentucky where he likely
will study architecture. John’s parents are Randall and
Ellen and he has two older brothers, Scott and David,
three surviving grandparents, and he shares his space
and time with four Labrador retrievers.
If we have any other graduates, please let Judy or
me know, so we can honor their achievements!
Saints, Sinners and Cynics Tuesday just got a whole lot deeper!
Beginning in May, Fr. Rich will be at Wolf’s Tavern
at First and Green on Tuesday evenings starting at 6:00 to
meet with whoever shows up and talk about whatever the
gathering wants to consider. Ever wonder about the fourth
century Donatist heresy? We can talk about that. Per-
plexed by the difference between post- and pre-lapsarian
pre-destinationism? We can talk about that. Really rather
sip something hoppy and talk about what we’re having for
the next Parish supper? We can go there, too.
Some of us are saints, some of us are sinners, some of
us are cynics, but truth be told, most of us are a little bit of
all three. If you’d like to hang around with others in the
same boat, come on by this Tuesday, or the one after that,
and see what comes of it.
Wednesday Evenings this Spring During Lent we got kind of accustomed to spending our
Wednesday evenings feasting, both in body and spirit, and
we’re going to keep it up in the months ahead.
On May 9, you’re invited to join your family and
friends for a pot luck supper at 6:00 in the Parish Hall.
Bring something to share and we’ll make sure there’s
plenty of iced tea. Or if you can’t get anything put to-
gether, come ahead anyway—there’s always more than
enough to go ‘round when the folks at St. Paul’s set the
table. As our program that evening at 6:30 Fr. Rich will
begin a short series on “How I Read the Bible.”
Then May 30 it’s on to the next in our on-going series
of last Wednesday suppers as Fr. Rich and Jenny host a
hot dog supper with chili and the rest of the fixin’s. If the
weather’s good, we’ll even take our supper on the lawn to
celebrate what for many of us is the start of the summer
scene.
Fr. Rich’s scripture class will continue through June as
well, on the 13th after another pot luck supper, and on the
last Wednesday of the month, June 27 after a menu yet to
be determined.
Come enjoy the food, take part in some opportunities
for growth, and join in the fellowship and fun.
Youth Confirmation Class Begins Wednesday evening, April 25 saw the first meeting of St.
Paul’s Confirmation Class for 2012. At 7:30, seven of the
Parish’s youthful members, two moms, and a little brother
that just wanted in on the action, all joined Fr. Rich for the
first installment of a program of preparation to be pre-
sented to the Bishop of Kentucky when he visits St. Paul’s
next January. We will study the Creeds, Holy Scripture,
Church history, and a whole bunch more—and we plan to
have fun while we’re at it.

Vestry Notes For a long time, St. Paul’s has published the un-
abridged minutes of meetings of the Vestry in the
monthly Good News. Transparency is a wonderful
thing, most especially in times of transition such as St.
Paul’s has seen recently, but sometimes accustoms us
to not looking at all. So we’re trying something new
this month.
Rather than printing the minutes of the Vestry
meeting held March 20, 2012, the most recent meeting
for which minutes have been approved, we thought you
might like to see the highlights of what happened at the
meeting last Tuesday, April 17:
• The Vestry reviewed financial reports through the
end of March, with revenue slightly ahead of
budget projections and expenses somewhat behind
– we’re doing well so far this year.
• Michelle Green is focusing on VBS in June but
also talking to Monessa Curry about our children’s
Sunday morning offerings. Youth Confirmation
classes begin this month in preparation for the
Bishop’s visit next January. We are also gauging
interest in a summer Wednesday program similar to
what we had in Lent – let us know if this sounds
good for you and your family.
• The website for the Diocese of Kentucky is under
construction and when it changes it is likely ours
will change with it – stand by for a new look in
mid-summer.
• Fr. Rich has met with about half the families on our
membership rolls – if you’re in the other half, call
Judy at the Office and set up an appointment.
• The Vestry approved a letter of thanks to be sent to
the Rev. Mark Linder, our consultant for the search
that brought Fr. Rich here.
• Fr. Rich gave the Vestry some homework as we
continue to cast a vision of who we are as a parish
family and where we’d like to be – they’re doing
their homework by computer; we’ll see how that
works.
• In spite of the homework, the meeting ended in the
parking lot with the Vestry presenting Fr. Rich with
a very outward and visible sign of welcome to St.
Paul’s.
For most of us, that list is probably more exciting –
at least more informative – than who moved and who
seconded the approval of the March minutes. If on the
other hand, you hanker to know the minutes minutia,
please know that the actual minutes of every meeting of
St. Paul’s Vestry is kept in the Parish Office and, once
approved, they are available to any Parishioner who
would like to see them. Can’t get any more transparent
than that, can we?
A Touch of Healing
Though it has been some time since we have had
the opportunity, St. Paul’s mid-week service of Healing
will return at noon on Wednesday, May 16. The weekly
informal liturgy will include the readings of the day,
perhaps a short homily, the Eucharist and laying on of
hands and anointing for healing. If your schedule al-
lows, join this quiet time of health and wholeness.
From the Rector of St. Paul’sFrom the Rector of St. Paul’sFrom the Rector of St. Paul’sFrom the Rector of St. Paul’s
I want to thank the many people who had a hand in our celebration of the Renewal of our Ministry,
and all those involved in bringing me here to this time and this place: the Search Committee,
the Vestry, the Bishop of Kentucky, and each and every one of you.
May our Lord continue to bind our hearts together as we do his work in the world and as we care for one another.
You are my peace, and you are my joy. Thanks be to God.
