Between worship services during the month of June, in place of Bible Bits, I will lead a study of N.T. Wright’s Surprised By Hope. It’s a bit heavier than typical summer reading, but well worth your time. It was a New York Times best seller when it came out in 2008. Many churches have read it and watched its accompanying DVD (there’s a participant’s guide too). It doesn’t offer the correct ‘answers’ but will give us a great opportunity to talk through what our hope is really for. Every confirmation class I’ve ever taught, every Camp Counselor Training I’ve ever led, and most Bible studies I’ve been to land on this question eventually: what exactly happens when we die? Does each individual have their own ‘day of judgment’ or will it happen once for all? And if the latter, isn’t that horrible to think of? Our loved ones are just laying there… dead? And then there are the questions about body and soul. Is there a soul? What happens to our bodies? What does resurrection mean anyway? Typically, we Lutherans shrug our shoulders and say something like: “MYSTERY” rather than feel our way through. That’s why I’m inviting everyone into a conversation about life, death, hope and resurrection all month in the Mary Room. MESSAGE FROM PASTOR STANTON

“What are we waiting for? And what are we going to do about it in the meantime?

Those two questions shape this book. First, it is about the ultimate future hope held out in the Christian gospel: the hope, that is, for salvation, resurrection, eternal life, and the cluster of other things that go with them. Second, it is about the discovery of hope within the present world: about the practical ways in which hope can come alive for communities and individuals who for whatever reason may lack it. And it is about the ways which embracing the first can and should generate and sustain the second.

Many people, in my experience—including many Christians—don’t know what the ultimate Christian hope really is…”

Surprised By Hope, N.T. Wright

Do you? ELCA Lutherans gather many who

appreciate mystery rather than certainties. Many of us recognize the gray of this world instead of seeing

everything in black and white. Lutherans are grounded in an identity of academic debate, theological exploration and a willingness to see things in a new way. I see this as a good thing… usually. In recent decades we have chosen to hold ancient doctrines that seem to exclude or judge less dearly. We seem to be more interested in challenging people

with the idea of grace than scaring people with guilt. At our best this makes sinners of all kinds feel like God hasn’t left us behind. Again, this is good. At our worst, though, this perspective replaces the Church of Jesus Christ with a simple warm & fuzzy feeling that has no core. If we believe everything, so as not to offend anyone, then we actually believe in nothing. So, what is at our core? What do we believe?

Between worship services during the month of June, in place of Bible Bits, I will lead a study of N.T. Wright’s Surprised By Hope. It’s a bit heavier than typical summer reading, but well worth your time. It was a New York Times best seller when it came out in 2008. Many churches have read it and watched its accompanying DVD (there’s a participant’s guide too). It doesn’t offer the correct ‘answers’ but will give us a great opportunity to talk through what our hope is really for.

Keeping connected: In The Lutheran’s June issue, learn how ELCA congregations use social media to keep in touch with members who can’t attend worship. And read “Social media gospel” to join a conversation with a consultant who says the digital church can become a “mission field.” To help your discussion of this topic, visit www.thelutheran.org for a study guide (click on “study guides” on the left-hand side).

We are the ELCA. In The Lutheran’s June issue, give a “Shout-out for Team ELCA” with Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton. In her monthly column she calls us into a “greater, deeper and unapologetic participation in the part of the church known as the ELCA.

We are Lutherans: In the June issue of The Lutheran, meet ELCA members who are serving the church: visit with the young adults who volunteer with Urban Servant Corps to reach Denver’s down and out … learn about a father and daughter who serve as lay leaders in Montana and New York … meet a pastor who will leave a lasting legacy to the church … and travel to the Central African Republic and South Sudan where Lutherans help refugees.

Subscribe today: Start a group plan to The Lutheran for as little as $8.95 per subscriber. Visit www.thelutheran.org or call 800-328-4648.

Study time: The Lutheran is a resource for individual and group study. In June discuss “Leaving church behind” with columnist Peter Marty, who says losing friends from a life we find meaningful can prompt a critical look at faith practices. Join a teaching theologian in thinking about the imperative to bring a unique Lutheran voice to the public square. Reflect on Pentecost by reading “Unsettled.” And ponder a dad’s perspective on duty and delight (to help your discussion of this article, visit www.thelutheran.org for a study guide—click on “study guides” on the left-hand side).

We are congregations. In The Lutheran’s June issue, find out how ELCA congregations do ministry in their communities: discover how an Ohio congregation receives and gives a gift of love … learn how a church’s old parsonage became a shelter for children in need … discover a vacation Bible school program with a giving twist … find out how a canning ministry feeds the homeless … and recycle old hymnals into angels.

Without blood donation, Greg would not be able to see his kids grow up. He received eight units of blood and 10 units of platelets to treat his acute lymphocytic leukemia. Without the transfusions, Greg wouldn’t have been able to complete the chemotherapy needed for a bone marrow transplant. Now in remission, Greg and his wife, Roberta, are enjoying quality time with their children and look forward to growing old together.

Imagine the LIVES touched by yours.

We are in the middle of synod assembly

season. All synods will meet, vote, discuss, worship and sing. I will be at five of these and can assure you that,

though there are delightful regional flavors, they will be remarkably similar. If we were to take a voting member from the Pacifica Synod meeting in Hawaii this year and plunk her down in the hills of Pennsylvania at the Allegheny Synod Assembly, she would recognize what was going on.

Each year from April to June a remarkable thing happens across this church. We come together. Members of synods participate together in the work of the ELCA and like it! Congregations see the work we do together as the ELCA all across this country and around the world and have a sense that they are part of something greater than themselves and are proud of it. For a few shining days we believe and live the words of Paul: “So we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of another” (Romans 12:5).

And then we go home.In the Dr. Seuss story Horton Hears a

Who! there is an entire civilization existing on a speck of dust. The moral of this story is that, though it might not be part of our experience, we shouldn’t discount the experience of another. After all, “a person’s a person no matter how small.” But I think there is another less perky lesson to be drawn, and that is, until they got into trouble the citizens of Whoville were quite content to believe their speck of dust was the whole world.

We’re not so different. Congregations can, and often do, fall into the trap of believing that they are the church, the whole church, all by themselves. Coupled with some of the most frequently asked questions usually raised around budget time—“What do we get from the synod?” and “What does the synod do for us?”—this understanding of church becomes what I call “Transactional

Whoville Ecclesiology.” Transactional because the motivation for participating in a relationship is what can be gotten out of it. Whoville because the individual or the congregation or the synod or the region or the churchwide organization believes it is entirely the church.

I’m not sure which part of Transactional Whoville Ecclesiology is most distressing. This ecclesiology arises from a transactional

understanding of our relationship with God. If I go to church, if I keep the commandments, if I follow Jesus, then God will do something for me. The gift of resurrection itself becomes a transaction. It’s like someone saying to his or her spouse, “I love you honey, but I’m only in this marriage to get your pension when you die.” It’s the opposite of “We love because [God] first loved us” (1 John 4:19). It’s “we love

so God will love us.” This is a grace-less ecclesiology.

The question should not be “What does the synod do for us?” or “What do we get from the synod?” Rather, transformed by the love of God in the death and resurrection of Christ, the question should be “What are we able to do together as synod?” or “What do we get to do as synod or as the ELCA?”

Whoville ecclesiology is isolating. It’s also really American. We celebrate the concept of the rugged individual. We value self-determination. Autonomy is prized. We are suspicious of claims on us by a greater whole. The concept of church as the body of Christ and that we are members one of another, then, is very countercultural.

But the baptized aren’t just a collection of individuals in the church for what they can get out of it. We have been claimed by Christ. Paul reminds us, “You are not your own” (1 Corinthians 6:19). The Marine Corps has billboards that proclaim: “Serving something greater than themselves.” How is it that they are better at articulating what it means to be church together than we are?

This isn’t a plug for institutional survival or mindless loyalty. It’s a call to each of us and all of us to greater, deeper and unapologetic participation in the part of the church known as the ELCA. We can have a little pride in who we are without irony. I believe I’ve established my theological heft so I am allowed a little hokeyness. Here it is: We are Team ELCA.

SHOUT-OUT FOR TEAM ELCAMESSAGE FROM BISHOP EATON

This understanding of church becomes what

I call “Transactional Whoville Ecclesiology.” Transactional because

the motivation for participating in a

relationship is what can be gotten out of it. Whoville because the individual or the

congregation... believes it is entirely the church.

GOD’S HANDS & FEET

PILGRIMAGE! ME?I never would have seen

myself going on a pilgrimage of any kind, until Pastor Karyn talked to me. It sounded like a great opportunity to learn, travel

and serve. Now I am excited to be leaving in a couple of weeks, traveling with family, friends, and soon to be friends by the end of the trip. We will be learning about the early Lutheran church in America and our history through tours. We will also be serving others in Philadelphia. I am really looking forward to serving at the Lutheran Settle House and the Welcome Church. I don’t know yet how we will be serving, but I know whatever God has planned for us will be a wonderful opportunity to share God’s love with others.

As servants of our Lord, we have a wonderful opportunity to be the hands and feet of God. We will be able to serve God by serving those in Philadelphia. On Sunday we’ll be worshiping, praising God for all that we have been able to so and will continue to do; as Psalm 134 says, “Come, bless the Lord, all you servants of the Lord.” God gives us so many different ways to serve Him through serving others. We don’t have to go on a trip to be God’s hand and feet; we can do it right here in our community, church, home, school or workplace. In church we can serve in

many areas, like ushering, reading, serving communion, greeting, bread baking, serving coffee, helping stuff the newsletter, teaching Sunday school or VBS, being a small group guide, quilting, knitting and the list goes on. In the community there are the Come for Supper, Salvation Army, our children’s school and many other programs that need volunteers to help. Serving each other in our homes is a wonderful way to show God’s love to those closest to us, by caring for their

needs and doing something special for them. Being a servant at our workplace can be different for each person depending on what you do and who you work with. If you are in school, that will look different for each person, but being a help to the least of those who go to your school will show God’s love to them.

There are so many ways to serve one another, so I challenge each one of you to find a place to serve in each of these areas, so that we can be God’s hands and feet to everyone around us.

Next year we are planning an Adult Mission Trip, so we can serve for a week where the needs are the greatest. Look for more detail coming this summer and fall. As I get ready to leave on this year’s pilgrimage, I thank God for this opportunity to serve Him with others in our group, to lead devotions each morning, for the fellowship we will have together and the wonderful memories we will bring back.

YOUNGYOUTHGROUP

If you are in 2nd–5th grade then this is your club!

Contact Katie Everson at [email protected],(608) 786-4826 for information or with questions!

All are welcome!

Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young, but be an example for other believers in your speech, behavior, love, faithfulness, and purity. ~ 1 Timothy 4:12

It’s green!! It may have been a tough spring with lots of rain and colder temperatures but it’s green!! God is great, life springs where it otherwise appeared to be dead. So, let’s celebrate with some fun events this summer.

The first event will be going to Noah’s Ark in June. There is an event made for this on the church’s Facebook page. If you will be attending please either email me or sign up on the event page so that I can notify Noah’s Ark with our numbers by June 9th. This event will be run more as a family event. With the size of the park and the ages of the youth children we are asking that an adult attend with them. However, if your child would like to attend and there are not adults that are able to go with them please let me know because we will work something out. We would like everyone who wants to attend to be able to! This event will be on June 13th. We will plan on meeting in the park n’ ride by Lloyd’s BP in West Salem at 8:30 and leaving from there. The park is open from 10-6pm. The cost is $18.50 plus tax a person regardless

of age and includes a hot dog lunch. We already have a few families signed up. I hope you can make it. Pray for warm, sunny weather! :)

The second event is Sugar Creek’s Explorer Camp, taking place July 10th. There is an event made on the church’s Facebook page for this activity also. Come for an exciting one-day adventure at Sugar Creek. Explore camp with games, nature time, crafts, swimming, a pony ride, Bible study, singing and more!! The day runs from 9-3pm. We will plan on leaving the church parking lot at 7:30am. It costs $20 per camper which includes snacks and a lunch. Please sign up either on the event page or email me so that I can let Sugar Creek know our numbers. It also helps knowing how many drivers we will need. There are many signed up for this event already also which is awesome!!Here’s to looking forward to a fun, safe, warm, and God filled summer with friends and family!

Blessings,

Katie:)

The OWL’s had a great time on the year’s first Road Trip in May with a visit to Taliesin and Wilson Creek Pottery near Spring Green, Wisconsin. Twenty intrepid travelers enjoyed a day of great weather, good food and fellowship on our day long trip. If you have not been on one of our trips we would love to have you join the group in June.

With one exciting road trip under our belt the OWL’s are clamoring for another adventure. With warm temperatures and sunshine it’s time to play like the kids again. What better way to accomplish this than a trip to the Circus. After prerequisite stops for nature and coffee we will arrive in Baraboo for a visit to the Circus World Museum. While there we will experience a Big Top Show, enjoy a scrumptious lunch, get a tour of the world famous Circus Wagons, and a Historic Ringlingville Tour. The museum was the winter home of Ringling Brothers Circus around 1900. The museum grounds are flat

and most buildings are wheelchair accessible. Cost of the entry is $17.95 for seniors, lunch is in addition and on your own. Please let Brian Narveson know by Monday June 9th if you are planning on attending, so he can arrange enough transportation. We will leave the church at 8:30AM on Thursday June 12th, we should be back at the church by 5:30PM.

Keeping with the circus theme our potluck in June will once again feature our own stories and experiences. I am sure we all have very memorable experiences from our first visit to the circus or a special circus we experienced. We look forwarding to hearing these heart warming stories. Did anybody sneak in under the tent? Our potluck for June will be Wednesday, June 18th at noon in the narthex. We look forward to seeing everyone there.
