DARROW FOR THE DEFENSE PRESENTED BY REV. RON HAMILTON

A 30 minute segment of the two hour one-man play, “Clarence Darrow” by David Rintels.

Ron Hamilton, a Willowbrook member, majored in speech, drama and literature in college. From the begin-ning of his work in churches he used drama, both acting and directing, as a method of outreach. He and church members often raised money to support missions by doing dinner theatre.

This Clarence Darrow presentation was used in that way. A civil rights lawyer before the term was invented, Darrow was involved in some epic cases, including the Scopes trial.

The production was also performed on a cable station in Denver where it won “Program Of The Year.” Ron also did it as a fund raiser for the drama department at Mesa State University in Grand Junction, Colorado.

Elizabeth Circle and the Mission Team are providing dessert and beverage for the evening.

Pastor's Academy

a.cad.e.my 1. A school for special instruction. 2. A secondary or college-preparatory school, esp. a private one. 3. a. The academic community. b. Higher education in general. 4. Plato's school for advanced education. (from American Heritage College Dictionary)

* * * * * Tuesday afternoon at 2 p.m. in Wilson Fellowship Hall, is the scheduled time for Pastor's Academy at

Willowbrook United Methodist Church. So what is this? The dictionary definition above indicated that an Academy may be many things.

My definition for what we are doing is simply to go deeper in presentation and/or discussion on various topics for greater understanding and personal growth. The topics have been mostly of my choosing but not always. I have entertained suggested topics as well. The purpose of the Academy is Discipleship. My intention is to provide avenues of spiritual growth and Christian maturity. I believe that learning to follow Christ comes first, and then secondarily, and naturally following, comes living our lives in such a way that results in the transformation of the world. This is the stated mission of the United Methodist Church as described by the United Methodist Book of Discipline.

",the mission of the United Methodist Church: To make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world."

The Pastor's Academy represents an opportunity for more in-depth learning. It is often the," rest of the

story" from a sermon or Bible study. Often it is an interpretation or discussion on events related to the United Methodist Church as a denomination. We have looked at the Annual Conference and the General Conference actions from a frame of reference based on both my experiences as a former District Superintendent as well as being a former delegate to both the Western Jurisdictional Conference and The General Conference. Sometimes we do a book review. Other times the subject might be a current event or an experience of mine that leads into a teaching.

Here are some of the subjects we have covered: 1. Discussion on John Wesley’s "Quadrilateral" based on its use in the Annual Conference Holy Huddles. 2. Book Review—"Onward, Engaging the Culture Without Losing the Gospel" by Russell Moore. 3. Discussion on "sightings", ghosts, fears, etc. including the Biblical views on Evil. 4. Historical/Biblical understanding on Prophesy and claims of those who say they are prophets today. 5. Mission and Ministry in Mexico- NAFTA, drug trafficking, poverty. Outreach and food programs. 6. Missionary work and theological education in the Philippines—speaker Rev. Dr. Romeo Del Rosario. 7. Book Review—"The End of White Christian America” by Robert Jones. Come join us Tuesdays at two!

See you at church,

Gary Kennedy

MOSAIC MOVES TO CHAPEL FOR SUMMER

Beginning Sunday, May 7th, the Mosaic worship service will move to the Chapel

for the summer and will return to the Sanctuary after Labor Day. Although Mosaic averaged nearly 90 in worship January through March, because so many of our regular attenders leave for the summer it makes sense to move the service to a smaller space to cut air conditioning cost. Mosaic will continue to offer creative worship in drama and art at 11:00 a.m. Join us in the Chapel!

THANK YOU!

Thanks go to Elmer Nossaman and Russ Koan for overseeing the installa-tion of the LED lights in the Sanctuary. The project is about 80% complete at this time. This was a big project and

anyone that happened to come by on the two days they were working, probably thought the Sanctuary would never be back in order by Sunday, but we are glad to say that after two very long (and noisy) days the project was completed and the pews back where they belong.

BIBLE 101: A BRIEF SURVEY OF THE OLD AND

NEW TESTAMENTS

Pastor Steve will lead a 6-week sur-vey of the Bible on Thursday mornings at 9:30 a.m. be-ginning May 4th in the Library Lounge. This study offers a brief overview of all 66 books of the Bible focusing on basic themes and discovering how the books of the Bible connect to form a scriptural tapestry. The first four sessions will look at the Pentateuch, the Historical books, the Wisdom Literature and the Pro-phetic Literature. The final two sessions will focus on the Gospels and the Letters. The only book required is your Bible (and a pen). We will meet in the Library Lounge. Sign-up sheets will be available after Easter.

With much appreciation and gratitude, Ron and I want to thank YOU, our Willowbrook family, for the caring and compassion you so generously expressed these

last six weeks. The prayers, cards, calls, visits and wonderful meals showed true Christian fellowship.

Today, April 4th, I was told that I am well on the way to heal-ing. Physical Therapy will begin soon and walking with a cane or a walker is acceptable.

For each of you our prayer is one of thanksgiving.

Norma & Ron Hamilton

Have you noticed the two new display boards that have been put up in the Narthex and Wilson Fellow-ship Hall? (thanks go to Richard Meyer for his hard work) If not, please take a look.

The one in the Narthex will be used to display new member photos and the one in Wilson Hall will be used for displaying Kris Krafter activities. We are trying to declutter the Narthex and Wilson Hall. The two triangle display kiosks and the large white/cork board are up for grabs. If you would like them or know of someone that may be able to use them, let the office know. If no one comes forward by the end of April, they will be dismantled and placed in the trash.

WHOM SHALL I SEND?

Jesus felt compassion for the masses of the forgotten people (Matthew 9:36-38) and commanded His follow-ers to pray that the Father would send workers (such as the Stephen Ministers) to reach those weighed down with life's many cares and challenges. When a prayer is lifted up for someone to represent Christ's love to those who are having a hard time, we Stephen Ministers re-spond by saying,

"Lord, here am I! Send me!"

MODERN PARABLES: Living in the Kingdom of God

by Thomas Purifoy

Under the leadership of Russell Denison the book and DVD are bringing the Biblical stories to life with a mod-ern twist. The curriculum is designed for people who like movies. Each class is "stand alone" and all are invited. NOTE: The Seekers will take a break for the summer. Watch bulletins and Good News for the next study.

FOND MEMORY God has an uncanny knack of placing complete strangers in our pathways. Miguel Saenz was the

most recent unknown person placed in our path. Introduced to us by Larry Hudson, Miguel became an integral part of our family each Sunday morning and occasionally at Friday night Youthful Seniors events during the past three years.

From the onset he enjoyed being invited to Sunday morning worship by Phyllis. She would drive to the assisted living facility where he would be sitting outside on a bench awaiting her arrival with a broad smile on his face. As a Veteran of the U.S. Army Miguel’s picture was hung on the “hero wall” in his assisted living home.

Miguel and Larry would exchange greetings and act like long lost buddies during the ride to and from worship services. Larry and Miguel both lost eyesight late in life. Miguel could only distinguish between light and dark. Each Sunday he enjoyed describing to Phyllis which color he could make out in the stained glass windows in the Sanctuary.

Phyllis, as a former Stephen Minister and Leader, has never wavered from their basic tenets. She made it her responsibility to see that Miguel was able to worship at Willowbrook UMC. Miguel was always appreciative of her efforts. Every time she drove him home he uttered, “Thank you very much. I enjoyed the worship service.”

Miguel often spoke about his family, two sisters in California and a son and daughter here in the Phoenix area. In fact, a couple of months prior to his death Miguel rode over to California with his son to visit his sisters. He spoke fondly of this visit.

The coffee time after worship was a favorite for Miguel. Phyllis would take him a cup of colored and sweetened coffee and he and Larry ate any-thing that smelled of chocolate. Many people like Neil McPherron, Marilyn Burmeister, Sally Wen-dell, Charlie Musgrave, Barb Christie and others would stop by and speak to Larry and Miguel. They would chat about almost anything. Miguel truly felt at home when he was at Willowbrook Church.

It certainly was a shock when Phyllis stopped to pick him up Sunday morning, March 19th only to discover Miguel had died during the week. The memory of his presence will always touch her heart. She knows God placed him in our lives for a reason and for that we are grateful!

Willowbrook’s Kris Krafters are most noted for sewing, knitting and quilting items for donations to local charities. While most of them are doing just that, Karen DeVerna and Murt Meierhenry, two of the Kris Krafters, are staying busy replacing the banners in the Sanctuary. The old banners were made by Phyllis Hill over 35 years ago and had begun to fade and show signs of age.

The Lenten banner in yellow and purple was designed and sewn in a few weeks. Pictured here you can only get a taste of the size of the banner as it hangs between the tall stained glass windows along the side wall of the Sanctuary. The

Easter banner sporting the familiar words “He is Risen!” was challenging at times. Watch for new banners to appear as the year progresses. And when you see a Kris Krafter, tell them how much we appreciate their dedication and hard work. All are welcome to join the Kris Krafters at any of their sessions. May meetings are Thursday, May 4 and May 18 at 9 am in Wilson Fellowship Hall.

Howard Davenport (nee Larkin) January 27, 1921-February 19, 2017

Patricia Jane Davenport, wife of almost 75 years Sons: Frank Howard Davenport

Jon Michael Davenport Daughter: Michele Anne Jackson

15 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, and 3 great-great grandchildren

Michele’s favorite memories of her Dad: Singing togeth-er on long Sunday drives all over Arizona, vacations in San Diego and getting to order whatever we wanted for dinner at a restaurant on the last night (he didn’t even blink when I ordered lobster), science fiction movies at the drive-in (Dad’s favorite), his delight in scaring me when I was sent to wake him up, hearing Mom and Dad giggling together, going to a movie on my birthday, sail-ing to Coronado Island (I was seasick all the way back), squeezing into the front seat of the VW and Dad being “surprised” when he grabbed a skinny knee to shift gears.

Some of Jon’s favorite memories of his Dad: Sitting on his lap and “driving” his fire engine red Oldsmobile, (it had a siren and he used it sometimes to get through slow traffic), watching him drag race and win most of the time, “swimming” in the COLD Salt River on the drive when we moved to Phoenix and laughing when my young sister got washed downstream (Dad quickly res-cued her and consoled his baby girl).

Shared memories: In 1956 Dad decided to follow his dream and finish college. Placing their belongings into a trailer, the family of five then piled into the car heading to Phoenix where he enrolled in Grand Canyon College. Attending part-time he not only obtained his teaching credential but went on to get his Master’s degree.

The many jobs Dad had included selling pots and pans, encyclopedias, and Christmas trees. He cut slipcovers, worked in an auto parts store, supervised the construc-tion of blimps at Goodyear, provided funeral escorts and worked with mentally ill adults and children with severe disabilities. He also participated in a motorcycle drill team.

Michele shared, “To my utter horror my Dad student-taught my 8th grade class. I think I was embarrassed the entire school year. However, how many kids can say their Dad was the president of a biker gang? Okay, a motorcycle club, nevertheless, it was way cool.” The family said he was president of “Heck’s Angels.”

Some people are here to learn, some to teach, some to be of service to others. Dad managed to do all three.
