VOL. VII , NUMBER 3 MARCH, 1958

God's Work Is Waiting on

YOUIGod's work is seriously in need of more qualified ministers! Hun-dreds are being brought yearly into the truth-scattered brethren

need to be visited, comforted, anointed when they're sick. Perhaps

YOU have not recognized your own responsibility to YOllr brethren!

by Garner Ted Armstrong"EFT up your eyes, and look on thefields; for they are white already to harvest" (John 4: 35).

In the month of January, 1958, mailf rom lis teners almost doubled that ofJanuary, 1957! God's work is leapingahead in power and scope as never before!Everywhere, people are beginning to

recognize the truth, and turn to God inrepentance as a resul t of this work! Evenministers are writing in, requesting The

PLAIN TRUTH and the CorrespondenceCourse-from which they are teachingtheir congregations. Many letters havebeen received f rom all over the United

States, f rom the Phi lipp ines , from Ha

waii and other areas, written from wholegroups of people who are meeting to

gether-crying out for a MINISTbR, ateacher, to come and help them!

Critical Need

We need to recognize the desire of

human beings to fellowship with others.Frequent ly, we receive lett ers asking,"Where can I meet with brethren oflike faith?" When people begin to seethe truth-they immediately begin looking for a place to meet-for OTHER

PEOPLE who are ah a in the truth. Theprimary commission to the Church is to

preach the Gospel of the Kingdom of

God-the Good News of the WorlJ

Tomorrow-to this whole world as awitness! But the secondary commission

is also vitally important! That commission of feeding the flock

IS being performed as well as we arepresently able to perform i t -but wemay be falling far short of what WESHOULD BE ABLE TO ACCOMPLISH!

Most people can hear the broadcast atleast once daily. All can receive The

PLAIN TRUTH and the Good News

magazines, in addition to the other book

lets. All can take the Bible Correspondence Course, which is a full-t ime studyalmost in itself. These are all media bywhich the Church can "feed" the flock!

But it is not enougb! For those who are stronger in the

faith-perhaps attendance at the Festivals and the study helps already men

tioned, in addition to their own diligentBible study and prayer, are sufficient tokeep them secure in the fai th of Christ, and safe from the wiles of Satan. But

for the "babes" in Christ, who are justheginning to learn of new truth-and

who, even though they are really hungering and thirs ting for knowledge, are

still unaware of the many pitfa ll s Satanwill set for them, it is no t enough!

For example, word came recently that

about forty persons, who had come to

learn of the true Sabbath day throughthe radio broadcast , joined AdventistChurches in a western city! Think of it!

As mere beginners in the faith, sincerelyseeking truth, they were led by theirdesire for fellowship to " join" a denomination of this world, fol lowing the fallacies of a self-styled "prophetess" whoseown wri ti ngs demonstrate that shetwisted and wrested God's Word.

How many times this may happen

when we do no t hear word of it we haveno way of knowing.

This is our responsibility. God worksthrough human instruments. He is saving and including in His Kingdom thosewhom we can be responsible for guiding in the right paths, Many will not bein the first resurrection because WE ARE

NOT REAPING THE HARVEST GOD ISSUPPLYING!

You probably already know t ha t God

lays it on every child of His to "PRAY

YE therefore the Lord of the harvest, that He would send forth labourers into

His harvest" (Luke 10:2). Are youreally diligent in your prayers?

A False Assumption

I wan t to dispel and quench once andfor all a false assumption many of youhave had. Many have believed there isonly ONE WAY for a layman to qualify

for the ministry at this t ime That is to

come to Ambassador College-as a regular student-and, if quali fied upon

graduation and perhaps tour full yearshere, be ordained into the ministry.

There is not one single scripture inthe entire Bible that says any such thing! We have received applications to en

ter College from men who have been

successful in business-men with homes,a family, furniture, a good job, who wantto uproot themselves-sell most of theirearthly goods, and come with theirfamilies and personal possessions toPasadena so they can enter college! Theyaspire to help in the u-ori: And becausethey have falsely ASSUMED the ONLY

way to "help in the work" is to somehow GET OUTTO PASADENA, they foolishly decide to leave their successfulbusiness, and subject themselves to

financial disaster, a ft er which they nolonger even have t ithes to support thework.

NEVER have those of us in the mini s

try said you must go to Ambassador College before you can be ordained! No

WHERE in the BIBLE can even the bares tprinciple be construed as to say such a

thing!Ir rna y be God is calling you for II

specific duty to perform NOW! "But I'llNEVER LEARN TO PREACH," some begin

to reason, "if I can 't get to AmbassadorCollege to take the speech courses andthe Bible courses!" And therein lies thebig MISTAKE many have been making!Let's see what it is'

The Function of God's Ministers

God calls His minis try, and in everycase He calls them for a specific func

tion! The offices, or the ranks within

the mini stry only denote the par ti cu la rKIND OF SERVICE the man has beenchosen, of GOD, to perform! And soPeter and Paul were orda ined as APOS-

TLES! It is NOT a "high and exalted"office to simply DECORATE and adornthe man!

But notice the fttnction of an Apostle! They were the spi ritual leaders of theChurch under Christ, who is its HEAD!

Christ had directly tra ined the originaldisciples (Matthias had been among

the 120 from the beginning, and wasselected to take the place of JudasIscarior) and revealed THEY were to bethe very beginning, the foundation ofthe Church.

Paul was inspired of God to write,"And [you} are bui lt upon the foundation of the APOSTLES and prophets,Jesus Christ Himself being the chidcornerstone" (Eph. 2: 20).We know the Apostles were always

PREACHERS' Peter Preached to the people on the Day of Pentecost in A.D. ) 1,

and his sermon is recorded in Acts 2.Other public messages of Peter are re-

The GOOD NEWS

corded in Acts as well.

Paul was a preacher. He said, ". . . Ihave preached to you the Gospel of God. . ." (II Cor. 11: 7) . He told Timothythat he had been "APPOINTbU a Pl{bACH-

ER, and an apostle, and a teacher of theGent il es" ( II Tim. 1: 11 ). In the firstletter to Timothy, Paul had said, "Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an

apostle" (I Tim. 2:7).There are many statements about

Paul's preaching recorded in his ownwritings, as well as those recorded by

Luke in the book of Acts.Notice, however, that in every case

those who were PREACHERS had eithera special gift (and remember, God givesSpiritual Gifts according to our naturalseveral abi lit ie s) for pub lic speaking,or else they had a good deal of TRAIN-

ING to do so!Peter was filled with the Holy Spirit,

and, a fter hav ing been with Christ al

most day and night for 31;2 years, wasamply qualif ied to PREACH! Paul had

been brought up at the feet of Gamaliel, one of the greates t Rabbinical teachersof that day (Aers 22: 3). Paul had beens tudying for years towards becoming aRabbi. Could it have been this mark ofdistinction th at caused the Jews in the

many synagogues to ask Paul to speakto them whenever he walked in?

In addition to his wide backgroundhaving associated with some of theleading orators of his period, Paul gotpersonal, individual TRAINING, firstfrom Christ Himself (Gal. 1: 12 and 1618 with I Cor. 9: 1 and IS: 8) and later, after conversion, he was ". . . with them

[the Apostles} coming in and going outat [erusalem" (Acts 9:28).

Paul's ordination, together with thecircumstances surrounding it, was thoroughly explained in a previous articleon HoUJ God Calls His Ministers.

Evangelists

I t is also a part of God' s p lan to placemen who are gifted in pub li c speaking

in the office of Evangelist. "And He[God} gave ... some euangelists; andsome, pastors and teachers" (Eph. 4: 11) .

The se men, after being taught and

instructed in the Way of God, wentabout PREACHING to believers as wellas unbelievers.Philip and Stephen were both among

the original seven Deacons chosen inJefllsalem. Yet both of them, because oftheir natural gifts as well as their strongMOTIVATION and SPIRITUAL ZEAL,

qualified for the office of Euanoelist!Stephen's career as an inspired speak

er of God's Word was cut short by hismurder at the hands of the Jews. BurPhilip went to Samaria, where he"preached Chr ist unto them" (Acts

8: 5 ), and is distinctly named as anEvangelist later-even though he had

March, 1958

original ly been appointed as a Deacon

(Acts 21:8) .Later, the Apost le Paul began to take

young men with him to TRAIN in theministry. We find Paul traveling with a"company" of men (Acts 13:13; 21:8)during his various journeys in God'swork.

Paul's Three-Point PlanThe Apostle Paul had real ZEAL in

wanting to accomplish the work Godhad given him to do. He tirelessly, thr ough much t ribulati on and manytrials from enemies, preached the Gospelall over the northern Mediterranean regions.

"... I strived to preach the Gospel. . ." he said to the Romans (Rom.15: 20). He told the Corinthians tha tChrist had sent him to "preach the Gospel!" (I Cor. 1: 17) . In this he " labouredmore abundantly than they all" (I Cor.IS: 10). Paul felt the real mission ofpreaching the truth of God. "Yea, woeis me, if I preach NOT the Gospel!" hesuit! to the Church at Corinth ( I Cor.9: 16).

Bur Paul did not do all the preachingby himself!

Paul had a plan. The first part of Paul's plan was his

own personal evangelism to proclaim theGospel of the King<1nm of God!The second part of the plan was vital

ly important, too!

When Paul and Silas went throughthe area of southern Galatia, to thecities of Lystra and Derbe, he found acertain disciple, named Timothy.

After t ra in ing under Paul, Timothybecame an Evangelist! (II Tim. 4:5).Timothy was able to PREACH! "I chargethee before God," said Paul to Timothy,"PREACH THE WORD; be ins tant in season, our of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all long suffering and doctrine"( I I Tim. 4:1-2).

Bur Timothy was not the only youngman to be called into the work of God

as an Evangelist! Titus, who was a Greek, was an Evangelist in charge of theChurches on Crete , a Greek colony. Godalways works in this manner. Now notice an amazing pattern evi

dent in Paul's work!

In Acts the 20th chapter , we see Paulhas been in Ephesus, where the great

uproar was caused by the pagan worshipers of Diana of the Ephesians. Then,Paul went to Macedonia to the Churchesalready established in Philippi and Thessalonica-and then into Greece proper(Acts 20:1-2).

He stayed there about three months, and decided to rerurn to Asia (to theChurches of Asia, principally the largeconarcaat ion at Ephesus). But, insteadof taking the immediate sea route from

Should W e USE the OLD

TESTAMENT?[esus commanded: ffMan SHALL live by EVERY Word of God."

How can we prove that He included the Old Testament in that

command?-that He meant ALL the Bible?

by Herbert W. Armstrong

DID YOU ever observe people goingto Sunday School or Church ona Sunday morning? And did you

ever notice what a large portion of them-if they carry any Scriptures with themat all-have merely a NEW Testament?A young man who had been a student

in a Bible college for a couple yearsonce came to me and confessed: "I'mall mixed up-frustrated! After all myBible study, I suddenly woke up to

realize that I 'm not sure th at th e Jesusof Nazareth, who lived 1900 years ago, really wax the CHRIST!

"I've heard you say over the air that

we must PROVE all things-even whatwe have thought that we believed. Suddenly I woke up," he confessed, "t o

realize that I never actually PROVED that

Jesus was the promised Messiah! Thatrealization l'LOORS me, I'm totally FRUS

TRATED.

"Tell me," he said earnestly, "HOW

can I prove it?-HOW can I KNOW?

HOI I ' can 1 BE SURE?"

Was this YOUR Experience, Too?

That young man had never studied theOLD Testament of his Bible very much.

1 opened his Bible to certain OLD Testament Scriptures, and OUT OF THEM hefound positive, satisfying PROOF that

Jesus was the Messiah-the SAVIOR ofthe world! I 'm going to show you brethren, now, a part of what I opened up tohim in His Bible.

Many have gained the idea that Christians shou ld never read the Old Testament at all! Many seem to believe THATpar t of the Bible was DONE AWAY-that

it was only for the Jewish people oflong ago-that its message is DEAD

today!

So Let's EXAMiNE this question!

Certainly our Chu rch - the TRUE

Church of God- is a NEW Testament

Church! I t certainly is under t he NEW,

not the Old Testament or COVENANT.

But there's a great difference between

the Old Covenant t ha t set Israel up asa NATION and those SCRIPTURES we callby the name "Old Testament."The OLD COVHNANT-meaning the

AGREEMENT between God and Israel, made at Mt. Sinai-is replaced by the

preaching of the NEW! But most certainly the NEW Testament Scriptures

show very plainly that those SCRIPTURES

w-c call "The Old Testament" are NOT

done away, for we read in I Peter 1:25,"THE WORD OF THE LORD ENDURETH

FOREVER!"

Do you know, brethren, that for aboutSIXyears after the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ and the foundingof the NEW Testament Church, that this

New Testament Church had and usedONT.Y the Ol d T'estarnenr Scriptures?

Chr ist preached the Gospel of the

Kingdom-the same Gospel He com

manded every minister to preach underthe NEW Testament dispensation, yet

do you know He preached altogether out

of the Old Testament Scriptures?

Chur ch Bui lt on Old Testament

Scriptures

I wonder if you fully realize that theCburcb was BUILT upon the writingr oft he Old T estament PROPHETS, as well ason the APOSTLES? Notice Ephesians 2:

19-20; "Now therefore ye ... are builtupon the FOUNDATION of the Apos

tles and PROPHETS, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone."Notice Jesus' own example: While

Jesus was sent f rom God as the Messenger of the NEW COVENANT-yet HEPREACHED THATMESSAGE OUT OF THEOLD TESTAMENT SCRIPTURES. He said,as recorded in John 5:39: "SEARCH THESCRIPTURES; for IN THEM ye think yehave eternal l ife; and THEY are theywhich TESTIFY Of' ME."Yes, they TESTIFY OF CHRIST. And do

you know, brethren, you could no t

PROVE Jesus of Nazareth was theCHRIST, the MESSIAH, the Son of God- you r SAVIOR and mine - WITH

OUT THE OLD TESTAMENT SCRIP

TURES?

I f we are definitely to establi sh and

PROVE, beyond doubt, that Jesus is theMessiah-the Savior, we must proveit by bringing Him through the door

of the Old Testament Scriptures-theprophecies PROVING Him to be thedivine Son of the living God! For, asHe said, THEY TESTIFY OF HIM!

Notice further what Jesus preachedduring His earthly ministry. John 5:46-

47: "For had ye BELIEVED Moses, yewould have believed me: for HE WROTE

OF ME. But if ye BELIEVE NOT HISWRITINGS, how shall ye believe mywords?"Moses wrote the first five Books of

the Old Testament-the part which hasoften been referred to as "the Law." And

Jesus said, "IF ye believe not his wri tings, HOW SHALL YE BELIEVE My

WORDS?"

And if we today cannot know andBELIEVE the things Moses wrote to betrue, HOW CAN WE BELIEVE CHRIST'S

WORDS? They are as much a PART ofHoly Scripture as those New Testamentbooks quuting our Lord!

We Must Believe ALL the Prophets

Another time, AFTER His resurrection,we find this example of Jesus ' preaching

recorded in Luke 24:25-27: "Then Hesaid unto them, 0 fools, and slow ofheart to belier:e A T.T. that the prophets

have spoken,"How did Philip of Bethsaida know

that Jesus was the Christ? Read John1:45: "Philip findelh Nalhanael, andsaith unto him, we have found Him, of

whom Moses in the Law, and th e Proph-

ets, did write, Jesus of Nazareth, the sonof Joseph."What ARE some of these Old Testa

ment prophecies which PROVE that Jesusof Nazareth was the Son of God, theMESSIAH?

First, Isaiah 7: 14: "Therefore theLord himself shall give you a sign;Behold a virgin shall conceive, and beara son, and shall call his name Immanuel."

Now notice, a VIRGIN was to bear ason. The son was to be of a humanVIRGIN, to have a human mother, bu tno t a human father. And the name of

this son, to be born as a baby, to growup to manhood, was to he " rMM ANUEL,"which, when translated, means, "GODwith us." And the fulfillment of that

prophecy is recorded in the New Testament, in Matt. 1: 20-23, "But while he

thought on these things, behold, theangel of the Lord appeared unto him in

a d ream, saying, Joseph, thou son ofDavid, fear not to take unto thee Mary

thy wife: for that which is conceived inher is of the Holy Spirit. And she shall

who preachf'cl Christ and the GOSPEL

OFCHRIST-which is the GOSPEL Christpreached, the NEW Testament GOSPEL

OFTHEKINGDOM-EVERYONEof them

whose preaching is recorded in the NEWTESTAMENT, preached CHRIST and theGOSPEL out of the OLD TESTAMENT

SCRIPTURES?

Yes, that is the way the true

FAITH ONCE DELIVERED was originallypreached, in all its purity and truth! And that is what we do today!

New Testament PROOFl

Notice how PETER used the Old Testament in preaching the Gospel of CHRIST,when del iver ing the first inspi red ser

mon the day the NEW TESTAMENT

CHURCH was really established: "But

Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted

up his voice, and said, unto them, Ye

men of J udaea, and all ye that dwell atJerusalem, be this known unto you, andhearken to my words: For these are no t

drunken , as ye suppose, see ing it is bu t

the thi rd hour of the day. Bur this isthat which was spoken by the prophet

Joel; And it shall come to pass in the

last days, saith God, I wil l pour our of

my Spiri t upon all flesh: and your sonsand your daughters shall prophesy, and

your young men shall see visions, andyour old men shall dream dreams" (Acts

2: 14-17).After concluding Joel' s prophecy of

the coming of the other Comforter, theHOLY SPIRIT, Peter continues in verse2'5: "For Dav id speaketh concerning

him, I foresaw the Lord always beforemy face, for he is on my right hand, that

I should not be moved."Through the remainder of his ser

mon on that day of Pentecost, Peter continued to preach Christ from the OldTestament - and 3000 precious soulswere CONVERTED through Old Testament preaching that day!

Later, Philip was sent by the angelof the Lord to preach to the eunuchfrom Ethiopia, returning home in his

chariot f rom Jerusalem. When Philip

met h im, the eunuch was read ing thisin the Old Testament book of Isaiah:"And Philip ran thither to h im, and

heard him read the prophet Esaias, andsaid, Understandest thou what thou readest? And he said, How can I, exceptsome man should guide me? And hedesired Phi lip tha t he would come upand sit with him. The place of the script ure whi ch he read was this, He was ledas a sheep to the slaughter; and like a

lamb dumb before his shearer, so openedhe not his mouth: In his humiliation his

judgment was taken away: and who

shall declare his generat ion? for his l ife

is taken from earth. And the eunuch

answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of

was to be the future RULER OF ISRAEL

not only was to be born of a virgin

He was to be born and first appea r in

the l it tl e city of BETHLEHEM of Judaea. But now let us see how the wonderful

53rd chapter of Isaiah foretold His

FIRST coming.

Foretold in Old Testament

Here is what Isaiah 53:1-5, 8, 12reads:"Who hath bel ieved our repor t? and

to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed? For he shall grow up before him

as a tender plant, and as a root out ofa dry ground: he hath no form norcomeliness; and when we shall see h im,

the re is no beau ty that we should desirehim. He is despised and rejected ofmen; a man of sorrows, and acquaintedwith grief: and we hid as it were our

faces from him; he was despised, andwe esteemed him not. Surely he hath

borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted. Bur hewas wounded for our transgressions, he

was bruised for our iniquities: the chast isement of our peace was upon him;and with his stripes we are healed ...lI e was taken frorn prison and from

judgment: and who shall declare hisgeneration? for he was cut off ou t of

the land of the living: for the transgression of my people was he stricken . . ."Therefore will I divide him a portion

with the great, and he shall divide thespoil with the strong; because he hath

poured out his soul unto death: and hewas numbered with the transgressors;

and he bare the sin of many, and madeintercession for the transgressors."HERE we see it foretold that the

Messiah was to be BORN, and to GROW

UP from a child-that He was to bedespised and rejected, NOT hailed as amighty King and Deliverer! I f the Jews

of 1900 years ago had only known andunderstood the Scriptures-and had theirHEARTS been honest and their MINDS

open-they would have recognized andaccepted their Messiah and the Savior! But they were then fol lowing the relig ious tradi tions of THEIR time, just as

nearly all the other churches are doing

today. The Jews did NOT understandtheir Scriptures, just as Christendom doesNOT understand the Bible today!

This wonderful 53rd chapter of Isaiahtells us the Messiah was to come inhuman flesh, to grow up, to bear ourafflictions and our sicenesses. Yes, HE

was to be WOUNDED and to suffer forour physical, as well as spiri tual t ransgressions, so that by His stripes-His

BODY broken for us-we are to behealed when sick! Many of us do notfully grasp that trut h, even today!

And did you know, brethren, that

EVERY ONE of the original evangelists

NUMBER 3OL. VII

bring for th a son, and thou shalt call hisname JESUS: for he shall save his peoplefrom their sins. Now all thi s was done,

that it might be fulfilled which wasspoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and theyshall call his name Emmanuel, whichbeing interpreted IS, God with us."

And now, let's read right on. Matt .2: 1-4: "Now when Jesus was born in

Bethlehem of Judaea in the days ofHerod the king, behold, there came wisemen from the east to Jerusalem, saying,

Where is he that is born King of theJews! for we have seen his star in theeast, and are come to worship him.

When Herod the k ing had heard thesethings, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. And when he hadgathered all the chief pries ts and scribes

of the people together, he demanded ofthem where Chr is t should be born."

Now WHY?-how would the chiefpriests and the scribes know where

Christ should be born? Because it waswritten in a propbec» of their Scrip-tnres! Continue, Verses 5-6:"And they said unto h im, In Bethle

hem of Judaea: for thus it is written bythe prophet , And thou Bethlehem, inthe land of Juda , art not the least among

the pr inces of Juda: for out of thee shallcome a Governor, that shall rule mypeople Israel." Notice! This prophecywas quoted from Micah 5: 2: "But thou,

Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou bel it tle among the thousands of Judah, yetout of thee shall he come for th unto methat is to be ruler in Israel; whose goingsfo rth have been from of old, from everlasting."So the Old Testament Scriptures add

ed ano ther detail-the MESSIAH who

THIS CHURCH continues to bear the" frui t" of Chr ist 's body-the true

Church of God. The message JesusChrist preached is now going aroundthe wor ld with increasing power-and

miracles and blessings are fol lowing inthe lives of those who yield and obey.

People are being HEALED. Lives are

being completely CHANGED. And thetrue gospel is going forth as a mighty"witness" to more and more nationsaround the world.

It is imporrant that all of us realizethe tremendous meaning of the job we

in God's Church have to do, and torecognize t hat Christ is using and empowering us as His body to do theexact work which He said His Churchwould be doing at the time of the end.'

A Let te r f rom a Member in the

London Church

As the work of God 's Church cont inues to reach more and more nat ions ,we will have local congregations in manydifferent cities throughout the world.

As we told you in a previous issue, our first overseas church is the one in

London, England. I t is now very ablypasrorcd by Me. Ger al d Waterhouse,

and many enthusiastic reports have cometo us about his dynamic, zealous andfaithful ministry to the people inEngland.

To give you an insight into thegrowth and zeal of our London brethren, I would like to quote sect ions ofa letter one of our London memberswrote to me personally. He is AlfredSymonds, and he lives near the city ofReading-about forty miles from centralLondon. He is so zealous that he comesand also brings four children in tochurch services each Sabbath on the

train. In spite of the time and expense

of this journey each week, he is mostgrateful and thankful for the Londonchurch and all the other blessings he

has experienced through knowing thetruth.

He writes: "JUSt this last year hasbeen the greatest year of my life. I am

lost for words by which I am able toexpress Illy deep thanks to the Eternalfor ever cal ling me. T ru ly we have beenblessed. The Plain Truth and the GoodNeus we eagerly await each month ,and the message broadcast each Monday

evening either by Mr. Armstrong orGarner Ted Armstrong is certainly a

great source of inspira tion and encouragement.

"We look forward each Sabbath to

our tr ip to London where we assemblewith the rest of God's Church and oh!what we have learnt through the veryable ministry of Mr. Gerald Waterhouse.Surely this man-yea this minister of

God-has never spared himself with

his ministry to the people in the LondonChurch."

Letter Shows Thankfulness

Brethren, I would like to interrupt

the letter at this point and ask youto

notice the THANKFULNESS expressed bythis member uf our Loudon church! Are

YOU this gra te ful for the blessings Godhas provided in your particular situation?

Mr. Symonds continues in his letterto me: "I am nor out to praise a man

because of his personality. Our worshipand allegiance and love is all for theGreat Eternal God. We in this housereally fear Him and through the sermonsand teachings of Me. Waterhouse we

are really s tr iving to serve God, to overcome that old self, and to be zealous. He

(Mr. Waterhouse) has most certainly'cried aloud and spared not.'

"Often I have felt like the Word hassaid we are-filthy as dust and unr ight

eous. But by the love and grace of theEternal , we aim to make the Kingdom

and the World Tomorrow."No doubt you already know much

about the way in which we spent the'Feast Days.' It proved to be the biggestthrill of my li fet ime so far. I was grateful yet again for the untiring and un

ceasing efforts put forth by the minister."Please believe me dear Brother I

am so grateful for all things per ta in ing

to God's True Church. I just do notknow how to tell you how I feel now

that we have our part of the Churchhere in London. I am most grateful to

the Eternal, and then for the faithfulnessof Mr. Armstrong, by whom you wereable to come over here and start thechurch which we attend. We talk of thecalled ones in your country quite often.

We pray for you and them each day,and we also pray earnestly for all theministers. We love each one of you.May the Eternal bind us even closertogether."

What do you think of that letter?Doesn't it give you an insight into the

changed lives of our bre thren in Lon-

don? And in what o ther church do themembers rejoice because their ministers

"Cry aloud and spare not"?This is the "fruit" of GOD'S SPIRIT!

This letter should encourage all ofyou brethren here in the United Statesand Canada to PRAY and to pray EAR-

NESTLY for all our brethren in theBritish Isles and throughout the world.Think of how many thousands will have

the ir lives turned "right side up" and express the LOVE and THANKFULNESS

exemplified in this let te r when we areable to reach them more personally with

God's truth!We have a JOB to do!

Healed of Asthma

Anothe r member of our LondonChurch was recently healed of asthma, and sent an enthusiastic letter to our

Pasadena office to tell us about it andexpress his thankfulness. His name isRonald Howes, and he is a zealous

member of God 's Church. He wri tes: "One year ago I could nor

get up in the mornings because of continuous asthma attacks. I tried nearly

every doctor and hospital in Londonbut they all said sorry but there is no

cure for asthma."Th rough these attacks I lost many

jobs and became very depressed havingnothing to look forward to but thesedreaded attacks which nearly choked me.

"I lay awake and would not sleep atnights. I just chanced to turn the radiodial OntO Radio Luxembourg and heard(what I know now) the TRUE Word ofGod being proclaimed as I had neverheard before. Anyway, to cut a longstory short, I eventual ly began to readmy sister's dusty old Bible and saw thatit was the book of Life, but no one

seemed to preach from it like you.

"I joined the church in London, andwas anointed by the minister-Me.

Waterhouse."In about a week I was getting up

with the lark, so to speak. Everyone inmy family was greatly surprised and justcould not make it out. Anyway, I a-TI

feeling much better than I have felt ineight long years. Thank God, He cer

tainly DOES heal today! How do I know?

JUSt ask my family."Brethren, let me remind you that we

NEVER have or encourage "resrimonv''

meetings. We never have public "healing" services or advertise these things in

order to impress the outside world.Rather, when any of our ministers pray

for a sick person, he does it privately,humbly-ALONE with God. Afterward,we NEVER brag and boast and publicly

advertise any supernatural healings in the

manner so many so-called "faith healers"do today.

We have NOTHING WHATEVER to do

with their methods or, for that matter, with most of their doctrines and beliefs. As a rule, these men are DISOBEDI-

ENT to the lau: and rule of Almighty

God.

But, on the other hand, we DO believethat it is ri ght to fol low the example ofthe apostle Paul who did mention to the

brethren how GOD had blessed othersthrough His ministry (Acts 14:27).

So, we hope you will realize the great

DIFFERENCE between our reports of

God's healinfi and those reported by law

Healing Strengthens Faith

Often, nne of the greatest blessings

that comes through a miraculous healing is the increased love and faith of the

individual concerned. Our minister in Corpus Chr isri and

San Antonio, Texas, Mr. Burk McNair,

recently wrote us about a case that illustrates this fact. He said that Mrs. E. A.Laney, of the Corpus Christi church, re

cently had the flesh torn from the boneof her hand by a washing machine

wringer. It was torn JO much rhar a doctor took 28 st itches to sew it in place.

The doctor insisted on giving Mrs.

Laney a shot. She refused and later theflesh turned almost black. The doctor be

came very concerned and tr ied aga in toadminister a shot. Again she refused.

Now her hand is completely well

through G()l)'S intervention, and the in

cident greatly strengthened Mrs. Laney'sfaith-and it should help all of us!However, this incident does show that

there are th ings a doctor SHOULD d o -

such as taking the necessary stitches inthis CaS::. and then leaving the healingup to God.Mr. Ton Hill , pastor of the churches

in Dallas and Houston, Texas, writesabout a member who was recently healedof the resul rs of rheumatic fever. Af te rbeing anointed, an electrocardiograph

revealed that this lady had a normal heartfunct ion for the first t ime in four years'In another case under Mr. Hill's juris

diction, a woman member was healed

of a ut erine tumor. After receiving ananointed cloth, she waited for some time

and was checked by her doctor. He foundno trace of it left!

Yes, Christ continues to HEAL through

His Church! Everyone of you brethren

should realize tha t you are commanded

by God to calJ the elders when you are

sick (James 5: 14). So you musr learnto BELIEVE God's promise to heal, do

your part by ceasing your disobedienceto physical laws, and trust Him to intervene.H all of us will spend much more

time in fervent prayer and Bible Jtudy,we wi ll see many more healings occurevery day. The tremendous POWER dem

onstrated through Christ 's miracles isavailable to all of us today. As Christ'sbody, we must in fai th receive and USE

that power in His service for good!

Church Growth

Since we last reported to you on thesize and condition of all our local churches, some real growth has taken place!

Our Pasadena congregat ion has increased over 100 members in the pastseveral months, and about 700 peopleare now in regular attendance! Also, thepersonal visitation program we told youabout has been of real benefit to theheadquarters church. The newer mem

ber s now feel much more a part of thebody, and a spirit of un ity is now manifest in this church more than ever.In addition to the visitation by the

ministers and senior students, an outstallllillg contribution to rhis program

has been made by Mr. Don Billingsley

one of the Deacons in the Pasadena

church. He has spent countless eveningsgoing with the ministers and advanced

men on visits to our local members, andmany other times he has gone alone orwirh his wife

His zeal and faithfulness in helpingcarry fo rward this v is it at ion program

should be an example to all you Deaconsand Elders in the local convrega tions!

Perhaps you can, if possible, offer to helpyour local ministe r help visit the localmembers where he deems it advisable.Show your willingness to help and

co-operate in any possible way. Remem

ber, we BELONG to Jesus Christ-who

has bought and paid for us. SO STUDY

your Bible and the CorrespondenceCourse a lot more so you will be prepared to effectively answer the members'questions and give wise counsel. Duyour part, then ask God to use you

through His POWER.

Just as I was writing, Mr. Dick Arm

strong came in and informed me thatthe Fresno church had an all-time rec

ord a tt endance of 93 this past Sabbar'i'This church has grown consistently sinceour evangelistic campaign the re about ayear and a half ago. But the attendance

is variable because some of the memberswho live at quite a distance come onlyoccasionally. Normall y, there are between 60 and 90 in attendance thereat the pre sent time.

Our other local church mini stered

from Pasadena headquarters the SanDiego congregation, continues its steady

March, 1958

growth. There are now about 75 adultsin regu la r a tt endance there, p lus manychildren. Recent visitors at the Pasa

dena and San Diego churches were Mr.and Mrs. G. A. Meeker, [ rum Overland

Park, Kansas, parents of Mr. GeorgeMeeker.

Extra Help Needed

The let ters of interes ted people in theChicago area have mounted to such numbers that our minister there, Mr. Dean

Blackwell , has found it a lmost impossi

ble to visit all those whose lett ers havebeen forwarded to him. With 50,000wat t Radio Station WLS broadcast inglocally, the Chicago Church is destined

to grow BIG.Consequently, Mr. George Meeker and

Mr. Cecil Battles have been sen t to assist in visiting the many prospectivemembers in that area. Mr. Meeker, asyou will remember, was formerly incharge of our London office and helpedpastor the church there. While waiting

to return to that position with Mr. Battles to assist him, he will spend a few

months in Ch icago to help reap the tremendous Jpiritual baruest which God is

granting us in that city.Latest reports indicate that the Chi

cago church will soon pass the 100 markin regular att endance! One potentialproblem there is the increased racial tension in that city as more and more thous

ands of Negroe s move in every month. So far our brethren have not experiencedany great amount of persecution becauseof this situation. But let us all PRAY that

God will preserve the love and harmony

among the brethren there-as He aluiavshas-and protect them f rom undue per

secution as a result of the racial situation. Our congregations are all constantly

growing, bu t unless the re is some special or unusual growth we will not report the attendance figures to you but

about once or twice a year. Perhaps themost important NEED in the Church

rig l1 [ now is more dedicated. qualified

minis ters and elders to help raise up andpastor new congregat ions all over theUnited States, Canada and Britain.

It is the responsibi li ty of euery one

of you to PRAY EARNESTLY that God willsend more men to Ambassador Collegewhom He will call into the ministry, and to inspire and guide all the present

students to put forth the ir utmost inpreparing to serve in God's work. Also.all of you local elders and deacons shouldkeep growinf!. so that God may use you

more and more in the future.Aud ALL of you brethren should yield

yourselces more completely and fervently into God's hands as living sacrifices

Many more men and women are needed

to fulfill the offices of Elder. Deacon and

WHO May Attend Our Schools?A policy has had to be set regarding who may attend our ImperialGrade and High Schools and Ambassador College. You need to

understand this policy.

by Herman L. Hoeh

GOD FORBIDS us to do as we please. He commands us to obey Him.To keep us in obedience God

set Jesus Chris t to be the Head of thisChurch to direct it.Jesus reveals His will through the

Bible. And His will clarifies the question of who may attend our schools. It istime we fully under stand what God'swill is in this important matter.

A Threefold Educational System

Every year hundreds are being addedto the Church. We do not decide who

should come to a knowledge of thetruth. The calling is of God. Godchooses those whom He wants, We

are here merely to minis ter to thosewhom God has called.

Part of our ministry is to "feed thefiock"-and this includes teaching ourchildren and young people. To trainthem has necessitated the establishmentof Imper ia l Grade and High Schoolswherever possible. The establishment of our schools is

part of God's three-fold educationalprogram revealed in the Bible. Godcommunicated this plan of educat ionthrough Moses. Here it is:

First: Parents are to instruct and tot ra in their chi ldren in the way of God.To insure education in the home, Godmade the marriage contract UNBREAK-ABLE except by death. Not ice the Bibleexposition of this first principle inGod' s educa tional program: "Ye shallteach . . . your chi ldren, speaking of[God's WAY and His LAW} when thousittes t down, and when thou risest up"(Deut. 11: 19). This same command isrepeated by Paul in Ephesians 6:4.

Second: Ministers and teachers whomGod has called are to instruct parentsand children. One of the functions of

the Old Testament priests was to "teachthe children of Israel all the statuteswhich the Lord hath spoken ..." (Lev.10: 1I ). II Chronicles 15: 3 speaks ofthe teaching priests . And Proverbs 5: 13tells of those who say: "I have notobeyed the voice of my teachen , norinclined mine ear to them that instructedHIe!"

The Bible is the foundation of allinstruction. It is the guide book to

every field of essential knowledge. Notall this knowledge can be imparted fromthe pulpit. Some of it must comethrough schools (compare this with

I Chronicles 25:8). THAT IS THE REA-

SON FOR IMPERIAL GRADE AND HIGHSCHOOLS.

Third: Special skills are to be t aughtby those t ra ined in each particu lar fieldof occupation. This is not a funct ion ofthe Church. Notice Exodus 35:34, 35:"He [God] has also given him Oholiabthe son of Ahisamak, belonging to theclan of Dan abili ty TO TRAIN OTHERS

endowing them with skill in everyskillful craft in engraving, in decorating,in handl ing violet, purpl e, and scarletyarn, in working with fine linen, in

weaving, and in all sorts of trades clndarts" (Moffatt renderi ng ). This mandid not belong to the tribe of Levihis function was not part of the Leviticalministry. This is God's plan for education. It

is a per fect balance be tween the home, the Church and the schools. The worlddoes not follow this procedure today.

What About Public Schools!

The governments of this world haveset up their own public school systems.Few people are conscious of the factthat public schools commenced inIsraelite countries, not in Gentile lands. And they were commenced for the basicpurpose of enabling people to read andwri te so that they could understand theBible in their own homes! You willfind this rather surprising informationin the Encyclopaedia Britannica.Public School instruction is one of

the blessings of Israel. It did not originate with the Genti les. The Gentileshave received this blessing from Israel.Last summer Dr. Meredith and I hadthe privilege of visiting numerousAmerican Schools in Gentile lands-schools endowed with Americanmoney for foreign students! In Latin

America, too, the Americans, the British and the French have establ ishedacademies for the tr aining of natives.

I f the governments in Israel wereunder God's Government there wouldbe no need for our own private schools. But Israelites long ago cast aside theGovernment of God. They have cast outof their schools any knowledge of God.Because of this, it has become necessaryto establish our own private schoolswhere possible, and as financial meanspermit. Not more than one out of every eight

parents in God's Church is located in

those areas where our schools are presently established. There is a definitereason for this. This is the age when weare prophesied to be scattered. Thosewhom God is now cal ling are scat teredthroughout the nations, not uni ted inone locality. It would be wonderful ifall of you could have fellowship everySabbath at a local Church. But this isnot possible in this age. And neitheris it possible--especia lly for financialreasons-for everyone to have his children in our own schools. Our broadcasts and magazines take

the place of Sabbath sermons for manyof you. In the same manner for manyof you who are scattered, the public

schools have to take the place of ourschools when it comes to teaching "reading, 'r iring and 'rithmeric." But yourspiritual instruction comes from theChurch of God.God requires you to attend the pub

lic schools under these circumstances. You must submit to the human authori

ties in power. Some brethren foolishly have moved

to localities whcrc our schools arc csrablished even though they were unableto find work there. This must never be.God forbids it. A father must be ableto support his children! We have had

to forbid couples with children to moveto areas where our schools are locateduntil the father has been assured of ajob. This is not our human decisionit is the decision of Jesus Christ rendered through Paul: "This we com-manded you that if any would not work,NEITHER SHOULD HE EAT" (I I Thes.

3: 10).Until work is located, none of you

should ever move to anothe r area-andespecially so in this period of recession.

Yet Other ProblemsBut finances and work are not the

only problems.Another problem often encountered

is that of a family split over religion.Sometimes a husband or a wife is converted, but the mate is not converted.Often the converted mate would like tosee the children in our schools. Sometimes the unconverted mate obiects, sometimes not. I f thi s is your problemyou need to contact a minister beforeyou make any move. Our schools cannot function without the cooperation ofboth parents. And if parents do not

co-operate, we cannot properly teach theyoungsters. This is a problem that must

be discussed wi th the minis try beforeany permission can be given to enterImperial Grade or High Schools,Another developing situa tion is the

matter of racial integration in schools.God has called in to His Church numerous Latin Americans, Orientals, and

Negroes , as well as many Israel ites andother Whites. The calling is of God.As Head of the Church, [esu» Christ

commanded Peter to "make no distinc-tion" spiritually, IN MATTERS OF

CHURCH WORSHIP, with Gen ti le s inthe Church (Acts 11: 12). This was adifficult matter for Peter to l earn (Gal.

2: 12). And it seems that some brethren

today have not ye t learned this lesson!Brethren, let 's clean our hearts!Notice the example in the New

Testament Church: "Now in the Churchat Antioch were prophets and teachers, both Barnabas and Simeon, who was

called Niger [the Greek word for'Negro'}" (Act s 13: 1). Simeon was aNegro in the Church at Antioch. God

puts no difference between men andwomen, or between races in matt er s ofspiritual fellowship, BUTGODDOES NOTWANT THE DIFFERENT RACES TO MIXSOCIALLY OR TO INTERMARRY.Social mixing begins in school! Many cannot discern the difference

between social and spiritual fellowship. One reason is tha t many of you havecome from denominations where socialfellowship was falsely labeled "spiritual"fellowship. Social fel lowship among

children and young people involves

playing together, par ties in the home, hiking and dating. In school, these social contacts, which ult imately lead to

marriage, are commenced.

Is This the Way You Look at It ?

Some have not fully understood what

the Bible says about our mixing interracially in the schools. From time to

time we hear the fol lowing view aired:"We are all in the Church. We be

lieve God forbids us to have social fellowship with the world. We also know

that we who are of another race than

Israelites are not to have strictly social

fellowship with our spiri tual brethren. We also realize that social fellowship isan inevitable part of school training andthat therefore we cannot all send our

children to the same schools. In somecases our children are leftwithout friendsto play with. Sometimes it seems tha tGod may not be quite fair."Let us understand this matter of social

fellowship thoroughly. God does no t

forbid our children social fellow.rhipwith other children in public schools.

Nei ther does He forbid us all social fellowship with the unconverted. Not icewhat Paul wrote in I Cor. 5: 9

The GOOD NEWS

"I wrote unto you," s<licl Paul, "in an

epistle not to company with fornicators: yet [ I do} no t [mean} altogetherwith the fornicators of this world, orwith the covetous, or extortioners , orwith idolaters; for then must ye needsgo out of the wor ld.... For what haveI to do with judging them that are without? do ye not judge them that are

within?"In other words, Paul declares we may

have limited social fellowship with sinners in the world or else we could notlive in the world. Our children may baoefellowship with other chi ldren in publicor private schools-so long as they learnwhere to draw the line. We are not to"run with them to the same excess ofriot" ( I Peter 4:4). Weare not todate the unconverted, as Mr. Meredi thhas previously expla ined in the article"Who Should Young People Date?"

But God still permits our children to

have friends and playmates. It is our

parental duty to teach our children whereto draw the line. Our children may playor take a hike with those who are unconverted, but they are not to be a partyto their evil deeds.

The vast majority of our white children have no other fel lowship than thatwith o ther chi ldren in public schools. So also does God permit the childrenof Negro and Latin American brFthrFnto share in fel lowship with unconvertedyoung peop le of their respective races.I am sure many of you have not

previously understood this point fully. You may have prevented your childrenfrom developing into normal, healthy

youngsters. You need to allow your children this l imited fellowship.

"To the Jew First"

God directs affairs here in this world, though the wor ld may not be consciousof it. God called Abraham out of thisworld. God told him to leave his familyand friends. Abraham had to be thefirst to give up fellowship with theworld. Because Abraham became thefirst to give up thi s world, his childrennaturally became the first to receiveGod's blessings. It is not because of therighteousness of Abraham's children

that we share these blessings, but because God is faithful in keeping His

promise to Abraham to bless his children. "To the Jew first," said Paul often.Because Abraham was the first to be

wil ling to give up fellowship with theworld, God has made it possible for his

jle.rhly children to be the first to enjoy afuller social fellowship with one another

in the Church-limited though it maybe. That is why God has guided His

Church to commence its Grade and High

Schools for the children of racial Israelites [ust,

This is the pattern of the Bible!

March, 1958

Many Gent iles not of the White racealready have spiri tual fel lowship in theChurch. They may have to wait a littlelonger for the establishment of schools, but steps are already being t aken in thatdirection. During the last Feast of Tabernacles, several of us had a conferencewith Negro young people of College age.Together we mapped out a tenta tive

program for their training in the fieldsof teaching and public speaking. I havebefore me a letter from one of theseyoung people giving more detai ls aboutcertain Negro Colleges-e-Housron-Tillotson College and Paul Quinn College

where this t ra in ing might be available. As God directs the development of a

competent teaching staff and as financespermi t, we shall find, in the not too distant future, that the children of our

Negro brethren may also enjoy socialfellowship with one another in schooLThis work, remember, is not the workof men, but of God. And as God makes

it possible it will be done!Regarding AMBASSADOR COLLEGE, allof you know that the purpose for whichit was founded is to provide a trainedministry for the Church of God toassist Mr. Armstrong in this world-widework. We carefully screen applicantsfor the College-because not all youngpeople are potential candidates for theministry. The College is nor for thepurpose of giv ing all our young peoplea higher education. Dozens of applications have not been accepted becausethe candidates-though they may haveoutstanding aptitudes for other jobs -

have not demonstrated their aptitude for

the ministry.Since a vital part of the ministry is

shouldered by a minister's wife, Ambassador College has to be co-educational .Social fel lowship is inevitable . Socialfellowship, therefore, necessitates separat ion of the races. God has always sentHis word from Israel to the Gentiles(John 4: 22). God sent Paul, a Jew,to the Gentiles. For the few brethren

of other races whom God may call to apart into the ministry for their own

people, a special program of t ra in ingis under consideration.

God Separated the Races

Moses was inspired to write: "Remember the days of old"-just prior

to the building of the Tower of Babel"when the Most High gave the nationsTHEIR INHERITANCE, when He SEPA

RATED the children of men. He set theborders of the peoples" (Deut, 32:7-8)

God made LIS what we are. He madethe races for a great purpose which fewunderstand. Many White Amer ir-ans have mis

takenly made non-Whites feel that theywere inferior because they were not

integra ted into the White community.

The Arya Girls' School in Kampala, Uganda. This school f or Afr ic an g ir ls is

supported by British investors. It is another illustration that th e Public Educational System is a b less ing f rom Israel bestowed on Gentile lands.

March, 1958

This is a false concept. It is possible tobe separa te and yet not be inferior."Separation" does not mean "inferiority."

The division of the human family began with the three sons of Noah. InGenesis 10 you will find the human

family subdivided into three main

groups, the chi ldren of Japheth, Ham

and Shem. These three subdivisions of

the human family are divided into thefour primary races of the Old Wor ld

and one in the New World, making

five in all. Before the modern theoryof evolution perver ted the study ofanthropology in the present century,it was common knowledge that the OldWorld-Europe, Asia and Africa-was

divided into the White, Yellow, Brownand Black races, and that the New

World-America-was origina lly inhabited by the copper-skinned American Indian. The human fami ly today is made up

of the strains of Noah and of his wife, and of their three daughters-in-law. This

accounts for the fact that more thannne racial .rtrain has come from each

of the sons of Noah. Consult the articlesin the April and July, 1957, PLAINTRUTH. The principle of God's law(Lev. 19. 19 ) forbids intermarriage between the three primary divisions ofShern, Ham and Japheth in accordancewith their racial subdivisions. Thus converted Israelites (who are Semitic) mayintermarry with converted Semitic Germans,West Slavs, Armenians and Syrians(who are all sons of Shern ) , and with

non-Semitic Whites such as Russians(who are from Meshech, Tubal and

Madai-the sons of Japheth ) and Greeks(who arc of Javan, the son of Japheth)and Italians (who are of Javan and ofthe Tyrians from Sidon, the son of Canaan). These are all of the White racialstock (though they may have come fromdifferent sons of Noah) and are permit

ted to attend Ambassador College andthe pre sent Imper ia l Grade and High

Schools.

Our Negroid bre thren are of courseHamitic, and may intermarry freelyamong themselves.

Our Latin-American Young People

Ano ther p robl em arises with our

Latin American brethren. Some of the iryoungsters have been severely mistreated

by fellow s tudents and by teachers inpublic schools because they have usuallybeen accustomed to hearing Spanishrather than English at home. Both

White and Negro children in public

schools have t aken advantage of the

chi ldren of our Latin American breth

ren. Our Latin American community has

a special handicap in t he Uni ted Statesdue to having another language. In cer

tain instances we have had to adviseSpanish-speaking parents to take their

children out of public schools and pu t

them in APPROVED private schools.

Our Latin-American brethren unders tand in general, why their children arenot to intermarry with Israelites. Their

racial origin should be studied by everyone, for it is more diverse than that ofour Neg ro brethren. The basic LatinAmerican racial stock is Japhetic. For 450 years the nat ive Indian pop

ulation of Lat in America has been ruledover by Spanish-speaking people. The

Spanish people who came to the New

World were in ancient times the sons

of Tarshish, the grandson of Japheth.Bur fur centuries before rhe Ruman

Empire rose to power, the Canaanitesf rom Car thage in North Afr ica dom

i nat ed and migrated to the Spanishpeninsula. Later, much of Spain was conquered (from 711 A.D. to 1492 AD.)

by Arabs and by the descendants of theCarthaginians who bore the name of"Moors"-meaning "Arnorites."

The Spanish-speaking people werethus the olive-skinned European productof a dual racial culture when they arr ived in America. A few except ions are

the blond Spaniards of Chaldean extraction who entered Spain after 400 A.D.When the Spanish came to the New

World they completely eclipsed the cul

ture of the copper-skinned Indians,

who were descendan ts of Ti ras, the sonof Japheth. As the centuries have passed, the overwhelming bulk of Latin-Amer

ican people have become mestizosmeaning "mixed." The ruling classes arestill par tly Spanish in some areas, bu t

almost everyone, in one degree or

another, is partly Indian) though he maycall himself "Spanish."

Latin-American peoples have becomea mixed community, therefore, that isbound not merely by racial ties with

the Indian, bu t bound also by languageties. It is t he un ity of their lenguag»

that is gradually "melting down" the

Page 9

people of Spanish-speaking Latin Amer

ica into a non- White Spanish-Indiancommunity. This Latin-American community is becoming predominantly Indian. It therefore const itutes a separateracial group in social matters .

Because our Latin American hrerhrenare no t basically of the same race asIsraelites, they will have to solve theproblem of school ing for their childrenin the same manner as do most of our

Israelite brethren who are not attending

our schools-by finding the public school(o r sometimes a private school) whichbest provides the educational needs ofthe ir chi ldren and which will toleratethe practice of God's WAY.

Remember, brethren, no matter what

our race OUR SPIRITUAL FELLOWSHIP

IS WITH ONE ANOTHER. And remember, too, to pray especial ly for the seuenora of eight of ou r brethren-White,

Negro, and Latin American-whose

children have no opportunity now to

attend our schools. They can have onlylimited social fellowship with other

young friends and playmates of theirrespective races.

This, then, is the policy which God

ordains for the administration of His

Schools.

self, or of some other man? Then Philipopened his mouth, and began at thesame scripture, and preached unto h imJesus."

And yet, some people today still say,"You can't do that-you can't preachCHRIST out of the Old Testament ." Burthe Spiri t-led PHILIP did it - JESUS

Himself did it-PETER did it-yes, ALLthe first-century evangelists of the true, original PURE Church of God did it!And we in God's true Church do ittoday!

Now consider Paul. How did HEpreach? In the very last chapter of Acts,we read of Paul, after he had gone toRome: "And when they had appointedhim a day, there came nnny to him intohis lodging; to whom he expoundedand testified the k ingdom of God, per

suading them concerning Jesus, both outof the law of Moses, and out of theprophets, from morning till evening"(Acts 28:2)).

A very large portion of the NewTestament is s imply the Old Testament

quoted. The New is BASED on the Old.The New Testament GOSPEL is basedon the PROMISES God made to Abraham- f o r i f we are Christ's, then we are

Abraham's children and HEIRS according to the PROMISES (Gal. 3: 29). With

out the Book of Genesis, how could you

Greece, he decided to return through

Macedonia. And so we see Paul in Greece (prob

ably at Corinth) starting to swing

NORTH, through Macedonia, and sodown into Asia from Philippi."And there accompanied him into

Asia Sopater of Berea; and of the Tbes

salonians, Aristarcbus and Secundus; andGaim of Derbe, and TIMOTHEUS; and ofAsia, T'ycbic«: and Tropbimtrs" (Acts20:4) .

What an assembly! Here were men from BEREA, wherePaul had raised up a Church (Acts 17:

12), from THESSALONICA, where aChurch was established (Acts 17:4) ,from DERBE, where a local congregationalso existed (Acts 14:6,7 & 23), and

from ASIA, where all seven ChurchesJohn addressed in Revelat ion wert' ID-

establish the PROMISES you hope to inherit THROUGH CHRIST?

Yes, brethren, your hope of ETERNALLIFE rests upon the Book of GENESIS!

Notice, too, the writings of Peter:

"We have also a more sure word ofprophecy; whereunto ye do well that yetake heed, as unto a l ight tha t shinethin a dark place, unti l the day dawn, and

the day s tar arise in your hear ts: Knowing this first, that no prophecy of thescripture is of any private interpretation. For the prophecy came not in old timeby the will of man: bur holy men ofGod spake as they were moved by theHoly Spirit" ( II Peter 1: 19-21).And Paul 's ins truction to the New

Testament Church in Romans 15:4:

"For whatsoever things were wri ttenaforerime were written for ou r learning, that we through pat ience and comfortof the scriptures might have hope."And how shall we have UNDERSTAND-

ING of salvat ion? Paul wrote Timothy:"And that f rom a chi ld thou hast known

the holy scr ip tures, which are able tomake thee wise unto salvation through

faith which is in Chris t Jesus. All scripture is given by inspiration of God , andis profitable for doctrine, for reproof, forcorrection, for instruction in righteous

ness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all goodworks" (I I Tim. :;: 15-17 ).And so, brethren, let us say with

DAVID: "Thy word is a lamp unto myfeet, and a light unro my path" (Psalm119:105)

on his perilous journeys! And Timothy

is mentioned FIFTH in this line-up ofmen whom Paul ha d with hi m during

these important trips to the Churches!

Who Were These Men?

Why did Paul have so many men fromvarious local Church areas with him?

What did they do? Let's see!Sopater was a man of Berea. Some be

lieve he may be the same as the Sosipaternamed in Romans 16:21, bu t whether

this is true or not, he was at least aChristian who was intimately associatedwith Paul in his travels.

Aristarchus and Gaius are called"men of Macedonia [they came fromThessalonica], Paul's companions intravel" (Acts 19:29), and are specifical

ly mentioned as having come to Ephesus

-across the sea, on a different conti-nent-with Paul. Aristarchus was withPaul later in ROME, and was called a

fellow prisoner of Paul at the time ofthe writing of Colossians (CoL 4: 10).

Secundus, also from Thessalonica, ismentioned but once, as traveling with

Paul toward Asia.Gaius, who came [rom Derbe, is men

t ioned as being with Paul in Corinth

at the writing of the book of Romans

March, 1958

(Rom. 16: 23). Timothy was from Asia- a s has already been mentioned-andwas Paul' s closest and most dependablehe lper (Ph il . 2: 19-20). Tychicus andTrophimus are both mentioned several

t imes in Paul's Epistles. Tychicus wasused as a messenger to deliver the Epistles of Colossians (Co!. 1: 7 and S) andat Ephesians (Eph. 6:21-22) from

Rome, and may have been the scribewho wrote the letters at Paul's dictation. And so the second part of Paul's plan

is clearly evident. He took with him certain qualified me n for personal, intimate, individual training in the ministry. These men undoubt edly had Spiritualgifts added according to thei r naturalabilities , as is evident in Timothy's case-and Paul could use t hem in a vitallyimportant part of the work of God.Notice! These men would go from

PAUL to the local churches, sometimesdelivering letters , and exhorting, establishing and strengthening the Churches. For example, Trophimus is pictured as

being at Miletum, afflicted with sickness, just after Paul's second apprehension and

imprisonment at Rome (II Tim. 4: 20 ) .Miletum is a small city about 50 miles

south of Ephesus. Trophimus was fromAsia. Paul had previously been two

whole years at Ephesus, at the school ofTyranus, teaching (Acts 19:9-10). Andyet, a good distanceromh of Ephesus, here is Trophimus ill. What was hedoing there? He was an Epbesian (Acts

21:29)1 Undoubtedly, he was travelingabout in that area of Asia, working with

the brethren, when taken sick. Paul hadto leave him behind prior to being ap

prehended and thrown into prison againill Rome,

T bese young me n evidently uiere

Evangelists! There are many more whoare mentioned, such as Apollos, whowas a naturally gifted speaker, called"an ELOQUENT man" (Acts 18: 24) .

But Apollos was also "mighty in th e

Scriptures!'

Everywhere, you see these men

PREACHING the word of God, del iver ingEpistles, strengthening the brethren, establishing Churches (I Thes. 3:2), ordaining Elders ( I Tim. ): 1-7 with Titus

1 :5 ) , doing the work of eiangellsm!

The Third Point of Paul's Plan

God used Paul to supply most of thedetails concerning Church government.Jesus Christ showed rhr- authority givenHis ministers in "binding and loosing,"but it remained for God to inspire Paul

to reveal the various offices and theirfunct ions in carrying ou t God's work.Already, we see Paul was carrying on

extensive personal evangelism. Also, he

was following Christ's example of training young men as future ministers by

giving them personal, intensive experience in the ministry, then ordaining

them and senc1ins them out.

Bur the third pan of Paul 's patternof work is also vit all y important!

Paul and Barnabus were chased out ofIconium, and fled to Lystra and Derbe

(Acts 14:1-6). At Lystra the people

had to be prevented from worshipping

t he two Apostles as a result of a miraculous healing. Aft er g oi ng to Derbe,

they immediately returned to the areafrom which they were driven out- for

a uery important purpose!"They returned again to Lystra, and

to lconium, and Ant ioch, confi rmingth e souls of the disciples, and exhortingthem to continese in the faith, and th atwe must through much tribulation enterinto the Kingdom of God. And when

they had ORDAINED THEM ELDERS INEVERY CHURCH, and had prayed withfasting, they commended them to the

Lord, on whom they believed" (Acts

14:21-23) .This was just prior to the Jerusalem

conference. Paul had to leave the area ofsouthern Galatia for a t ime-and it wasnor good to leave without first establish

ing gorernment in the Church-ordaining able men as ELDERS to watch over

the flocks.Make no mistake!

Paul did not impulsively ordain menwho had not been TRIED and TESTED!

He wrote to Timothy that he must notlay hands on a "novice" or one newlycome to the faith! ( I Tim. 'J :6 ; 5:22).

Don 't forget that !/limy Jews, who had

been given qualit ies of leadership, hadbeen converted long before, in Jerusalem(see Acts 2).

There were Jewis h men from Asia,Phrvgia and Pamphylia, all areas where

Paul was very active in raising up

churches. Undoubtedly there were many

converted Christians in these areas evenbefore Paul arrived. In this way, Godhad sown the seeds of His Church even

years before.Since it wesneuer permissible to or

dain a man who had not been AMPLY

QUALIFIED, who had not been sound inthe faith-tried and teJted-we know

Paul could not have orda ined Elder s

within only a few weeks after their con

version.

Elders in Every Church

Acts the 17t h ch apt er gives the account of Paul's preaching at Thessa

lonica. It was her e that Aristarchus andSecundus were probably converted.Again, it is very likely that s ome had

been converted about 19 years earlier, and had been livin-z as Christians since

tha t time. Paul reasoned with the Jewsand many of the Greeks three Sabbathday r (Acts 17: 2 ) , and as a result "someof THEM"-SOIl1l: of the [ews-v-t'bclieved.

TUDE" (Verse 4).

Pau l l eft by night, going to Berea, then to Athens and later to Corinth.

Only a very few months had passedwhen Paul wrote to the Church that had

been raised up at Thessalonica, the firstof his letters to be included in Scripture. He had sent Timothy back to Thes

salonica from Athens (I Thes . 3: 2 )-

Timothy th e Evangelist and already anordained minister of God-to "ESTAB-

LISH" this Church'In the letter itsel] Paul gives com

mands that are to be carried Ou t by somewho were in authority. In c losing the letter, Paul said, "Ami

we beseech you brethren, to KNOW

THEM which labour among you [not

Paul, and others who were far awaymost of the t ime-but those "among"

the Thessalonians-who were rightthere} and are OVER YOU in the Lord[a Spiritual office], and admonish you;and to esteem them very h ighly in lovefor their work's sake!" (I Thes. 5: 1213 ) .Those who were addressed more par

ticularly in the letter were given chargethat the Epis tl e be read to "all the holybrethren" (I Thes. 5:27).Huw plain! Here must have been

local ELDERs-either ordained by Paul

or by Timothy , who was sent back to

Thessalonica to establish the ChurchElders who could utilize the instructions

from God's Apost le and Evangel is ts inexhorting the flock, praying for the sick, comforting the weak, explaining and expounding the in ten t o f the Scriptures.

This was the vital THIRD PART of

Paul's plan!He could no t have trusted JUSt "any

one" to take over these newly begotten"babes" in Christ! He needed thorough

ly consecrated spiritual Elders to placeas overseers of th e flock.

Were Mistakes Made?

Paul, a few years later, called a brief

ministerial meeting at Milerus, south of

Ephesus, when he was on his way to

Jerusalem for the Day of Pen tecost , int he Spr ing of 56 A.D. Paul was lat ercaptured, left in prison at Caesare i fortwo years, and then taken to Rome in

the fall of 58 AD.Apparently, his haste in wanting to bein Jerusalem prohibited a short over

land journey f rom Miletus to Ephesus,so he called the ELDERS of the Ephesusarea to him.

These men were trained under Peal'spersonal direction d u r i n ~ his three-veerstav in the reg ion of Ephesus (Acts 20:

31). They had been ordained as Eldersin God's Church. They had qualified.

God had revealed through Paul the ironclad regulations tha t mus t be adhered to

in choosing Spiritual leaders of the flock. But notice what Paul predicted of them!

Page Ii

"Take heed therefore unto yourselves,"

he said, after reminding them of his pas tefforts in dil igently preaching the Gos

pel, "and. to all the flock, over whichthe Holy Spirit hath made you overseers, to feed the Church of God, whichHe hath purchased with H is own blood. For I know tbis" admitted Paul, "thatafter my departing shall grievous u/olues

enter in among you, NOT SPARiNG THEFLOCK.

"Also of YOUR OWN SELVES shall menarise [some of these very ordained EL

DERS}, speaking preverse things, to drawaway disciples after them" (Acts 20:2830) .

I t happened!Many years later , Christ' s message to

the Ephesus Church through John wasthis: "Remember therefore from whence

thou art fallen" (Rev. 2:5).Yes, Pau l knew even as he ordained

some, that they might yield to human

vanity and greed, and ultimately turn

sour.Mr. Armstrong has also had some

similar experiences. Years ago, he real

ized the need of ordaining Elders, insome instances, to help oversee the flocksthat were being gathered together inOregon. According to the needs of r ie

work-according to all the evidences inthe lives of the men concerned, the

"fruits" of their sincerity and faithfulness-Mr. Armstrong was led, l ike Pau l,

to ordain Elders! Later, when tests came, some of these very men turned their

backs on God's work-and became more

interested in their own selfish pursuits!

Some God struck down-others were

scattered, until today none remain faithful.

MISTAKES WERE MADE! BUT WHO

MADE THE MISTAKES?

PAUL, FOR ORDAINiNG ELDERS AS

GOD HAD COMMANDED?-MR. ARM-

STRONG, FOR ORDAINING ELDERS AS

GOD DiRECTED? OR THE ONES WHOHAD BEEN ORDAINED, AND GIVEN THESERIOUS RESPONSIBILITY OF OVERSEE-

ING GOD'S OWN CHOSEN PEOPLE. AND

WHO THEN TURNED AWAYFROM GOD?

Once Elders were orda ined, the re

sponsibility was THEIRS! No HUMANBEING CAN FORESEE THE END FROM

THE BEGINNING! Even God does not

foreordain WHETHER or not YOU will"turn sour!" Yes, mis takes were made

- n o t by God's Apostles-but by thoseunfaithful ones who TURNED AWAY, follow ing t heir own lusts and selfish in

terests!

Desperate Need Today

God' s Chu rch is growing by leaps

and bounds! But it is seriously lackingthe qualified ELDERS it needs to ably

care for th e flock! Many of the ministerare "spread out" over an area hundreds

of miles across, so to speak, and, as so

many of you brethren well know, areliterally having to "live behind the

wheel of a car" to minister to the needsof the flock of GoJ.

WHY SHO ULD THIS BE SO?I t is GOD'S INTENTION that some

QUALlFY as local ELDERS to help sharethis tremendous LOAD! I f this pattern

were followed, the col lege t ra ined , ordained ministers who have had personal, individual training from Mr. Armstrong, and who have been gif ted to PREACH,

could much more effectively minister tothe needs of the people-being assistedby able Elders who could labor among

the brethren in their own local area.Instead of driving 50 or 100 miles atnight to ano int a sick person-the sickone could call his own local Elder whowould live close by.

Consider An Amazing Fact

Did you ever read a single s cript urein the Bible that tells us we must havea preaching service every Sabbath? Can you find ONE SINGLE SCRIPTURE

laying down rules for having a HYMN,then a SERMON from one who is quali

fied to PREACH? And yet-becausemany of the brethren have no r seen their

own responsibility-some have begun

to ASSUME they are excluded f rom be

ing a di rect help in TEACHING the flock, because they're not qualified to PREACH!

God's ministers have never said wemust have a preaching service each

Sabbath! Some of the smaller Churchesare still conducted as Bible Studies, asQuestion-and-Answer sessions, instead of

a regular "Church Service."I t is vital for your Christian growth

that you hear PREACHING! Make no mistake about that! But it is not possiblefor MOST of the Church to hea r per

sonal preaching each Sabbath! BecauseGod's Church is mostly a scatteredChurch, many must s tudy priva te ly ,following the lessons of the Correspondence Course, and listening to the

broadcast.

Let's look i nto the actual QUALlFICATIONS for ELDERS, and see the a stounding truth!

Do YOU Qualify?

God reveals it is a GOOD THING fora man to earnestly desire to be of servicein His Church. "This is a true saying,If a man desire the office of a bishop[Elder]. he desireth a good work."A bishop [Elder] then must be

BLAMELESS, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sobpr, of good behaviour, givento hospitality, APT [able] TOTEACH; not

given to wine, no striker [or quarrel

some person] , not greedy of filthylucre, but patient, not a brawler, not

covetous, one that ruleth WELL his ownhouse, having his children in subjection

The GOOD NEWS

with all gravity" (I Tim. 3:1-4).

Read these qualifications again!Amazing though it may seem to you

-there is not one single scriptural qualification in the entire Bible that says anELDER must PREACHI

He must be ABLE TO TEACH the

scriptures--able to TEACH othe rs how

to live a godly and Christian l i f e

able to HELP others by being hospitable, being patient with their problems, beingwilling to ano in t and p ray for the sick- b u t he is not obligated to PREACH!

NOWHERE, in all the examples ofChurch gatherings, of qualifications setdown in scripture for Elders, is therethe slightest indication that Elders had

to stand and preach each Sabbath-s-orthat they ever did!Rather, the APOSTLES and EVAN-

GELISTS did the inspired SPEAKINGl

The Elders were ordained as spiritualoverseers of the flock, They were to"take care" of the Church of God!Many of you men who probably

COUL D HAV E BEEN QUALIFYING havenot been doing so- -bccause you were

l abor ing under the false assumptionthat you could never be used in God's

work unless you first spent a full fouryears at Ambassador College! This is

not necessarily so at all!Now read the other qualifications for

Elders , in the remaining two verses (6

and 7) of I Timothy 3 and in Titus theIs t chapter! An Elder must hold fastthe faithful word-and be able bySOUND DOCTRINE to exhort and convict

the gainsayers! He must be able to STAND AS A REP

RESENTATIVE OF CHRIST-to GIVE ANANSWER FOR THE HOPE THAT IS IN

HIM-to explain and expound thorough ly the basic doctrines , th e mean

ing of prophecy and the t imes in whichwe live, the great PLAN of God and

what it means! He must be a man ofFAITH-able to pray in absolute ASSUR-

ANCE for the sick, anoin ting them with

oil and KNOWING t hey wil l be healed!

He must be an UNSELFISH man! His

time will totally belong to God! He

will be willing to ADDICT himself La

the ministry-laboring night and day

among the saints-giving of himsel f inhumility and patience that others can

receive help.

HOW NOT TO QUALIFY

The quickest way to D1SQTTAT.IFY

yourself for ever being of service toyour brethren is to do the following:Decide an "Elder" is a pretty "high"

office-and one t ha t will ge t you a lot

of "respect." Let everyone KNOW ofyour intentions to "ge t" this office for

yourself! Be outspoken and vociferous-express "your opinions" loudly' every

chance you get. Jump in and be quickto answer a mat te r w it h your mouth

so yuu can display "leadership:' Have

all the answers-never be willing to say,"I don 't know!" Don't receive correc

t ion-let everyone know how selfjustified and r ighteous you are. Displayyour superior "spirituality" by a lot ofspiri tual-sounding words. Always "talkit up" BICr-impress people! Is that enough?

This is the EXACT OPPOSITE WAYFROM THE BIBLE! And yet, it is the

HUMAN way!Men tend to believe it is OTHER MEN

they must impress and please!LISTEN!

I f you begin to try to impress Mr.Armstrong, or your local Pastor, youare s tart ing down the sure and quick
