Greatest FEAST 1n Centuries!

During one of the preaching services,all those who were a ttending the Feastfor the first time were asked to raisetheir hands. A veri table "sea" of handswent up! It was amazing to see HOWMANY God is adding to His Churchyearly! There were literally hundreds ofnewly-begotten "babes" in Christ-newChurch members, who were attendingtheir very FIRST Feast of Tabernacles. Inaddition, 29 persons were baptizedwhile at the Feast. To see the numberGod is adding to His Church, to realizeevery single ONE of them has dozens ofquestions to be asked, problems to be

euidene that Almighty God was speaking to us!Even older members, some of whomhad attended the Festivals for manyyears, said they heard new truth, theylearned, and grew in a deeper fuller understanding of the word of God! Fromtime to time the subject of these ser-mons will appear in the pages of TheGood News.Every single year, Almighty God isopening up new l ight to His servantsHis true Church will always GO FORWARD--GROWING as God adds knowledge. Unlike the worldly organizationsof men, who still preach the false doctrines of their ancestors and their humantraditions, the true Body of Jesus ChristGROWS in new truth-in grace andknowledge!

A Real "Harvest" Evident

About 2,800 of God's people-the largest number in mal1Y hundredsof years-heard dYl1amic, inspired messages from God's servantsduril1g the uionderjul Feast of Tabernacles. Especially for youbrethren of the Church who were unable to attend, we bril1g youthis report of those eight joyous days!

by Garner Ted ArmstrongNew England states that no one rose.Over forty states were represented!Several brethren from Canada werepresent, and finally,Mr. Armstrong askedour member from England, Mr. JamesWells, to come to the platform to beintroduced to the brethren. It was a joyto realize James Wells, now a studentat Ambassador, was the representativeof another group of God's t rue people,who were meeting together in the Feastof Tabernacles in another part of theworld-London, England.James was a member of tha t Church,under the guidance of Mr. Gerald Waterhouse, our minis ter in London, unt il hecame to America as a s tudent of the college.Finally, Mr. Armstrong told the members pan of the purpose in meeting to gether in the east Texas woods, awayfrom the world, for the Festival. Godtells His servants to proclaim these Festivals "in their seasons,"and, for that reason, the grea t PURPOSE of the Feastand the deep spiritual significance be-hind i t-was a central theme pervadingevery service.Thursday, October 10th, marked thefirst Holy Day during the eight days. Anall-day service was held, with 2Y2 hoursrecess between preaching services forthe physical feast ing and fel lowship atthe noon meal.Driving, inspired, dynamic messageswere given each day during the ent ireFeast. Messages in which it was plainly

GODS OWN PEOPLE-from overforty states and two foreign nations-gathered together on ourtabernacle grounds near Gladewater,Texas, in the largest and most successful Feast of Tabernacles in many centuries!"Most wonderful feast yet!"-was acommon remark, filled with enthusiasm,heard among the brethren on the lastgreat day.

Solid Spiritual FoodWhat an amazing difference betweenGod's Feast of Tabernacles and most"conventions" and "tent-camp meetings"held in the world. Instead of the pseudospiritual "sanctimoniousness" or thenoisy, showy chaos of a convention, ourown tabernacle grounds were filled withpeople who were in real earnest! God'speople! They were there because theyrealized their very Creator, the RULERof the entire universe, had commanded it.They were there hungering and thirst-ing for knowledge-for answers to theirmany questions-for the very word ofGod! May God be praised for His manyblessings He poured out on us at theFeast!Mr. Armstrong welcomed the hugecrowd on the eve of the first Holy Day,Wednesday, October 9th.As is usually his custom, he askedthose from the various states to rise ashe called the name of each state. that the nation is suffering, and facingDOOM, because it is living in flagrantviolation of a Second Covenant whichGod made with our people forty yearsafter the covenant at Sinai!I t fills most of the Book of Deuteronomy. First, as recorded in Deut. 6:3-5:"Hear, therefore, 0 Israel (today America, Britain, etc.) and observe to do it;that it may be well wi th thee, and thatye may increase mightily.... Hear, 0Israel: The Eternal thy God is oneEternal. And thou shalt love the Eternalthy God with all thine heart, and wi thall thy soul, and with all thy might."That is the first and the most important precept, which America breaks today. No one will claim tha t our peopleas a nation loves the true God quite thatmuch!Space here does not, of course, permitquoting all the words of this Law andthis Second Covenant, sti ll in force andeffect today! It fills most of the Bookof Deuteronomy. Read it yourself. Butwe shall hit the high-spots, and quote anumber of outstanding points."Beware, lest thou forget the Eternal.. . . Ye shall not go after other gods,of the gods of the people which areround about you" (6 : 12, 14). Americadoesn' t realize it or admit it, but AMER-ICA-AND BRITAIN, TOo--HAVE FOR-GOTTEN ISRAEL'S GOD!America is deceived and doesn't knowit. She is embracing a religion falselycalled "Christianity" which in true factembodies the essential beliefs, philosophies, customs, and ways of the religionsof the pagan gods of Moses' day!Regarding other races and nationalities, "Thou shalt make no covenant withthem . . . neither shalt thou make marriages with them" (Deut. 7: 2-3). America made herself the ally of godless,heathen Russia. America is falling victim today to the Communist propagandaof MIXING THERACES, contrary to God'scommands! God Himself scattered theraces at the tower of Babel. God decreedthey shall remain segregated until theend of this world, and the coming ofChrist.Communism stands for amalgamationof the races, until there will be but onerace again. After some 30 years ofNew Testament history, the record ofthe New Testament Church is almost ablank for almost a hundred years.When,a t last, rays of historic light give usglimpses into the activities of theChurch, we find a Church vastly changed.

A Second CovenantAs the Gentiles came into the Church,especially in the second, third, andfourth generations, they brought withthem their pagan customs, ways, andbeliefs. Thus paganism began mixinginto Christianity. Soon the pagans professing Christianity greatly outnumberedthose who held fast to the originalTRUTH of Jesus Christ, of the apostles,

and of Paul.By 148 A.D., for example, only thechurches of Asia Minor, raised up byPaul, continued to keep the Passover.All others, pagan dominated, had substituted the pagan spring festival in honorof the goddess Easter. By 198 A.D., onlytwo churches publicly kept the Passover,and a hundred years later this and theother true New Testament Church practices were forbidden by law, and prevented by the state police!And it is from this paganized apostasythat today's so-called "Christianity," oforganized religion has degenerated. People born into today's perverted world,reared in churches professing to be trueNew Testament churches, ignorant ofwhat happened in those early years, suppose, erroneously, that the churches ofthis day are the t rue churches of JesusChrist! But PROPHECY says that longbefore our day they would turn awaytheir ears from the TRUTH, flnd beturned to FABLES! This has happened.Our land is filled with false preachers,today, just as Jesus foretold. Many ofthem, themselves, are deceived-yes,many sincere, but deceived!So our people today do not know

The Great ApostasyAmerica does not know, because herfalse preachers of organi;ted religionhave not told her, that God made aSECOND COVENANT with our own national people Israel (the Jewish peoplewe all understand are from Judah; theAmerican and British are racial ISRAEL)just prior to entrance into Palestine backin the days of Moses, 40 years AFTER,and in addition to, the Covenant madewith them at Mt. Sinai. And because

we are breaking this covenant today, weare DOOMING our nation to DESTRUC-TION!Forty years after the making of theOld Covenant, just before Israel enteredPalestine-just before Moses' deathGod Almighty made a Second Covenantwith our forefathers, the terms of whichare being carried out on our people to-day.At tha t time, God said of our people:"0 that there were such an heart inthem, that they would fear me, and keepall my commandments always, THAT ITMIGHT BE WELL WITH THEM AND WITHTHEIR CHILDREN FOREVER! " (Deut.5:29) .

Then God commanded Moses to sendthe people to their tents, while Mosesalone stood before God ... "and I willspeak unto thee all the commandments,and the statutes, and the judgments,which thou shalt teach them. . . . Yeshall walk in all the ways which theEternal God hath commanded you, thatyc may live, and that it may be well withyou" (Deut. 5:31-33)."Now these are the commandments,the statutes, and the judgments, whichthe Eternal your God commanded to

AMERICA has strayed so far away from"'l. her God that she does not realizewhat blessings could be hers ifshe served Him, and what doom is soonto strike because she rejects Him, whileprofessing to worship Him!The nation today does not know tha tserving and obeying the ways of God isTHE WAY, and the only way, that leadsto increasing and perpetual prosperity,peace, and happiness.America does not know that God'sLaws are for our good, our protection.America's false shepherds teach the people that God's Laws are bad for us.Therefore these false preachers have ledthe nation into unhappiness, discontent,suffering, and headed it into chaos andtoward DOOM!

God condemns racial discrimination, but commands racial segregation. There's a vast difference! Todaypeople confuse the two as tho they werethe same!

Why We Have Diseases"I f ye hearken to these judgments,and keep, and do them . . . thou shaltbe blessed above all people . . . and theEternal will take away from thee allsickness, and will put none of the evildiseases of Egypt upon thee" (Deut.7: 12, 14-15).' 'Therefore shall ye keep all the commandments which I command you thisday, that ye may be strong.... Thereshall no man be able to stand beforeyou: for the Eternal your God shall laythe fear of you and the dread of youupon all ... Behold, I set before youthis day a blessing and a curse; a blessingif ye obey . . . a curse if ye will not obey. . . but rurn aside out of THE WAYwhich I command you this day" (Deut.

11:8,25-28)."Ye shall nor do after all the thingsthat we do here this day, every manu.batsoerer is right in bis own eyes"(Dem. 12:8). America violates thatcommand above all. By teaching that sinis doing what is contrary to your ownconscience, the preachers lure the peopleaway from the laws and commands andways of God, and teach them to doWHAT IS RIGHT IN THEIR OWN EYES.This, which God condemns, is made toappear to be righteousness, and Christian. But by condemning the laws ofGod, they make God's true ways appearto be evil! This is America's RELIGIONtoday! AND AMERICA IS UNDER A DI-VINE CURSE!"Thou shalt nor eat any abominablething" (Deut. 14: 3). Then follows thelist of the clean and unclean meats. Thelist is also given in Lev. 11. Yes, this,too, was one of the conditions to goodhealth, national peace, prosperiry, andindividual happiness and joy. But thepreachers tell you that's all done away.They tell you to eat pork, ham, bacon,oysters, clams, crab, and all the otherfoul, filthy, unclean animals. And GOD'SLAW, which is inexorable, takes its toll!The people are sickly and diseased, restless, discontented, full of fears and worries, unhappy and suffering, and nowfacing national captivity in war! Theassurances of the false prophets can't pre-vent the CURSES hitting our people fordisobedience!Also in the laws of this covenant arethe commands on TITHING. The firsttenth of every person's income belongsto God, not to the individual, and is to

The GOOD NEWSbe paid to God's minister. Under theOld Covenant priesthood (Sina i) thetithes were paid to the Levites, thenGod's ministers. Under the New Covenant, the Priesthood being changed tothe spiritual ministry of Jesus Christ, achange (nor an abolishing) is made inthe t ithing law, so that today everyoneis directed to pay God's tithe to the trulycalled ministers of Jesus Christ (Heb.7). But in Deut. 14:22-27, is writteninstruct ion for a second tithe, that is,a second tenth of income, to provideexpense money for God's true people toattend God's festivals-the Passover andPentecost in the Spring, and the Feastof Tabernacles in the Fall-at whateverplace GOD shall designate. Not oneAmerican out of a hundred thousandhas ever so much as heard of this secondtithe, today! Those who practice it aregreatly blessed.But the nation is under a divineCURSE!Then there is yet a third tithe, onceevery three years, to be given to thewidows and orphans as God's insuranceprogram.

Other Laws Add Blessings"At the end of every seven years thoushalt make a release.... Every creditorthat lendeth unto his neighbor shall release it; he shall not exact it of hisneighbor, or of his brother, because it isthe Eternal's release" (Deut. 15: 1-2).Yes, these ways which God commandedseem rather strange, don't they? Peopledon't dream of the blessings they losebecause they ignore them!"Observe the month of Abib, and keepthe Passover unto the Eternal thy God.. .. Seven days (following Passover)shalt thou eat unleavened breadseven weeks ( thereafter) shalt thounumber unto thee . . . and thou shaltkeep the fea.rt of week.r (Pentecost) . . .and thou shalt REJOICE before the Eternal thy God . . . thou shalt observe thefeast of Tabernacles seven days . . . andthou shalt REJOICE in thy festival"(Deu t. 16:1, 3, 9-11, 13-14). Peopletoday don't even know what the month"Abib" is. It is God's first month of theyear, but it is not the same as the paganJanuary. I t begins in the spring, when

new life is budding forth in nature. Butthe nation has deserted God's calendar,and accepted the pagan calendar. Thepeople look on God's holy days as "Jewish holidays," have forsaken them whichGod enjoined FOREVER, and taken up,instead, with the pagan holidays.But AMERICANS ARE UNDER A CTTRSE,AND NOW HEADING RAPIDLY INTO NATIONAL DESTRUCTION!Next, chapter 18, comes ins tructionagainst fortune-telling astrology, seances.Yet America and England are full ofthat today. In chapter 22: 5, women are

November, 1957commanded nor to wear clothing whichpertains to men. But it's the STYLE todisobey God. In chapter 23: 19, "youmust never exact interest upon a loanfrom a fellow-Israelite (a fellow American or Britisher today). . . . From aforeigner you may exact interest." Inchapter 24: 14 is a command againstemployers underpaying employes, orholding back their wages, and in 25: 13,a command for giving full measure,honest weight-a full money's worth inany transaction.

What Is Prophesied to Befal l Us!Go thru this en tire Book of instruction, BINDING ACCORDING TO ITS SPIRIT

AND INTENT ON US TODAY, and you'llsee our people do exactly the oppositein every case!Once we see these things thru themind of God, the sins and ways andcustoms of our people today are shocking-APPALLING! That's how they appear to God. Our people are insolent,stiff-necked, rebellious, going their OWNway, and like dumb sheep going to theslaughter.Finally, chapter 28, "IF only you willlisten carefully to what the Eternal yourGod orders, mindful to carry out all Hiscommands which I enjoin upon you thisday (40 years after Mt. Sinai covenant),then the Eternal your God will lift youhigh above all the nations of the earth,and all these blessings shall come uponyou. You shall be blessed . . . foes whoattack you the Eternal will rout beforeyou; they may assail you all together, butthey shall fly before you in all directions.The Eternal will command you to beblessed in your barn and in every enterprise to which you put your hand....IF you obey the orders of the Eternalyour God and live His life, so that whenall nations on earth see you are ownedby the Eternal, they may stand in aweof you. The Eternal will make youOVERFLOW WITH PROSPERITY...."BUT if you will not listen to thevoice of the Eternal God . . . then shallall these CURSES come upon you andovertake you."All these curses shall come upon youand pursue you . . . till you are destroyed. . . these curses shall be a mark andportent upon you and your descendantsFOR ALL TIME . . . . He will put aniron yoke upon your neck till you aredestroyed." (Compare with Isa, 47: 1-6,speaking of the DAUGHTER of ancientBabylon-the European Fascists of todayput ting a yoke on America's neck; andJer. 30:7-8, where that yoke is finallybroken and removed by Christ at Hissecond coming.) We Sawthe NEW GERMANY!

This past summer three of our graduate students saw Germanyfirsthand. They paid for their entire trip in order to acquire thisnecessary experience. They viewed the Dachau crematorium andblood ditch-but let them tell you what they witnessed in this article!

Instead of rubble, starvation, and poverty, we saw a newand modern nation surpassing all otherEuropean countries in shipping, industry and commerce.Germany makes more steel thanBritain and builds twice as many housesas France. Germany's currency is stable.Prices are steady and production is increasing.Yes, a country whose cities were practically obliterated, is again back on itsfeet. Once more Germany holds the balance of power in Europe!

The question is, What will Germanydo with that power?We found the answer this past summer!An Eyewitness Report

Three of us who graduated this lastJune from Ambassador College-BernellMichel, Kemmer Pfund and I-spenttwo months in Germany travelling overtwo thousand miles. We saw Germany'smajor cities, the Ruhr and Saar industrial areas, and nationalistic Bavaria.Since we studied German in AmbassadorCollege, we were able to converse withthe people in their native tongue."America is too big for Germany,"said the German-speaking sailor on ourship, looking at New York's skyscrapersthe ship pulled away from the dock.A simple statement, bu t the tone of hisvoice implied that America is "too big"for Germany NOW, bu t . . . Uponreaching Germany itself, we wonderedif this isn't the hidden thought and motive of the German people as a whole.In order to compete with America,Germany is rapidly rebuilding. There isno doubting that fact. We saw newroads, apartment buildings, and department stores-fantastically modern andcomparable to any found in the U.S.We saw them in the small towns as wellas the large cities. Such a build ing program cannot be found in any other European nation!At the rate she is building, Germanywill fast become the most MODERNnation on earth. We had to observe the

streets with keen eyes in order to seebombed-wrecked buildings and craterswhere a building once stood.And ye t -Germany is NOT SATISFIED withher posit ion as a world power!The Same Germany?

We enjoyed our trip through Germany because the people were generallyfriendly and hospitable, rarely hostile.Germany appears to be a peaceful nation.But, wasn' t Germany also a "peacefulnation" before World War II?A well-known photographer and lecturer said recently, "When I returned toGermany after 35 years, I was surprisedto find Germany the same as it was then.The atmosphere, and people remain theSAME!"Did you grasp the meaning of that?The German people have not changed!They have not been democratized ordenazified. They remain the sameGREEDY and proud people they werefifteen and thirty-five years ago!And what is the German's attitudetoward Americans? Because of ourwealth, they are envious and jealous.Even though they are better off thanthey were during the war, they still wantMORE. They want more than Americans.GERMANY ISSTRIVING TOBECOMEGREATER THAN AMERICA!

A Competitive SpiritThe Germans of today do not appearmuch different from Americans. Theircustoms, though still typically German,

are becoming Americanized. The Germans, however, have one human characteristic-a fault in all people, butespecially in the Germans-which i s the Germans abhore defeat!

Whether individually or nationally,Germans admitted to us that they cannotsuffer to lose. We noticed this especiallyin playing spons. Being a small nation,Germany feels inferior. The people, individually, confessed that they feel inferior. To arise above this inferiority,the concept of the master race is developed.Germany was defeated in the last war

-a terrific blow to her national PRIDE.Germany is turning this defeat and totalruin into victory by rebuilding her power until she is again ON TOP! The German looks at the wealthy United Statesand, with envy and jealousy, puts forthevery effort to create a modern andgreaterGermany with unrivaled luxuriesand prosperity.In essence, Germany is COMPETINGwith the U.S.! It is a commercial competition destined to result in America's"Waterloo."

One Man Wie lds PowerAs a sovereign power, the nation ofGermany is taking a greater par t in international affairs. With a stable currency, a producing industry, and anoutwardly democratic form of government, Germany again has economic andpolitical POWER to wield. As usual,this power is wielded by one manKonrad Adenauer.The Germans look on Mr. Adenaueras the man who brought them prosperity. Fearing that a change in politicalleaders would alter this, the Germansre-elected him and the Christian Democratic party in the September electionsfor another five-year term. Many Germans expressed to us the fear that theirleader would not live through his term.Without him, where will Germany turn?"Adenauer," says Charles Thayer (author of the book The Unquiet Germans) ,"has been the most popular politicalfigure in Germany, partly, no doubt, because he fulfills the traditional German

dream of a strong man with a will ofhis own. Though he is generally depictedas a Fascist beast and worse by the Communist press, his devotion to the causeof Europe has made him a favoriteamong Western statesmen" (p. 125,italics ours).. Chancellor Adenauer is a devoutCatholic. That is why he said in 1949,"I want to see a united Europe." SinceMr. Adenauer is quite old, it is unlikelythat he will see the fruition of hisdreams. Since it is the younger generation whowill become tomorrow's nation, wesought to learn what they think about thefuture? We were constantly among German youth while travelling in Germany.

a united, German-dominated Europe!The Change in Outward BehaviorThe country's remarkable recoveryhas brought a change in German behavior. Nazism, and all it stood for,fades into the past as new foreign ideasare accepted. We found Wes tern andAmerican influence permeating industry, public relations and even musicjazz and "rock 'n' roll" being a crazeamong German youth.But, is there also a change in the German attitude toward military service?The new German army is supposedlybeing molded on a democratic patt ernwithout the pitfalls leading toward"prussianism." Already, however, it isbeing discovered that American recruiting methods just don 't work wi th German soldiers.Just as the democratic school systemin postwar Germany came to naught,just as decartilization failed and the dismantling program backfired, so will theGerman army return with its goose-step

ping drills and chauvinistic methods.Although there is some change inGerman outward behavior, their character remains distressingly THE SAME!The question, then, is-Can this newarmy be trusted? "Only t ime will provide the answer," says the SeptemberReader's Digest (p. 68). But by thattime, IT WILL BE TOO LATE!

The German Youth

We didn't see much bomb damage remaining in Germany, but here is onebombed-wrecked building in Munich. Although three fourths of Munichwas destroyed, only a very f ew bui ld ings such as this one can be seentoday.This picture was taken at th e en trance to th e Ruhr area in Germanyas th e sign indicates. The sign is ona bridge crossing th e Rhine Riverwhich serves as an important waterway for coa l barges such as you seein this picture.

Here is another view of Germany's industry. This is a canal branchingfrom th e Rhine. Along th e edge of this canal are loading docks, wharvesan d factories-all crowded together in this small area.

The barracks of Dachau are being used today to house refugees from th eeast. These refugees ar e not pleased with their present environment. Thesign at th e entrance proclaims the ir p ro test with, "WIR WOLLEN RAUSau s den KZ. BARACKEN in menschenwurdige Wohnungen zu preisen,d ie w ir bezahlen konnen." Translated, the sign says, "We want to get outof these concentrat ion barracks and into decen t homes that we ca n callou r own and be able to pay for!"

We spent about two months in Germany, and almost every night in theGerman Youth Hostels. Here we talkedwith many young Germans.One German lad asked us if we knewthe names of our American war planes.We could only name a few. He, however, not only knew the names of theGerman airplanes used in World WarII, but also the American planes as well!We asked him why this was importantto know. He couldn't answer!

The German teen-agers, nevertheless,behave and act much like those inAmerica, Britain and France. The German youth is in a craze over American"rock 'n' roll" as well as jazz and bebop.They are beginn ing to wear blue jeansinstead of the traditional "lederhosen."Coca-Cola is becoming the ir favoritedrink and American movies their entertainment. At the same time, crimeand juvenile delinquency are on the in-crease. They blame the Americans, ofcourse.All these are signs of frustration. The Nazis Return to PowerWhile in the Ruhr area, we visitedthe parents of one of our London churchmembers We talked to them in theirone-room apartment where they wereforced to live because nothing bettercould be obtained.This couple told us about l iving condit ions in Germany. "The Nazis areback in power," the man said to us.

"Without having been a Nazi, a manis unable to obtain a good Job:' Becausethis man had lived in Holland beforethe war and had worked in England,he was unable to obtain a good job. Consequently, he was barely able to makeends meet.Because of high taxation, many otherGermans are f inding it difficult to earna living. Although one coal miner wasearning two dollars an hour, most of itwas paid in taxes. Numerous Germansare not satisfied with such a standard ofliving. They want higher wages withfewer working hours and lower taxes aswell. The German working people arenow beginning to make these demands.

What Next?With all the advancement and progress made as a new nation, Germany isstill unstable. Many observers believeconditions will revert to the past in theface of a serious economic depression.All is well as long as two forces-Konrad Adenauer and a booming economy-exist. But Mr. Adenauer is an old manand there are signs of the boom comingto an end, at least in the automotiveindustry.

As long as prosperity exists, the German way of life will not change. Ashistory clearly shows, however, a fall inthe economy always means an alterationin the political course of the nation! No tonly will Germany be affected, but therest of Europe as well. What will happento Germany, will equally apply to all ofEurope.An economic problem in Germanythe economic heart of Europe-will affect all of Europe and force a unificationto prevent collapse. The 2520 years expired shortly after 1800 A.D.

Ten Commandments Bindingat CreationGod's Church recognizes the eternalbinding authority of the Ten Commandments. David was inspired to say: "AllHis commandments are sure. They standfast for ever and ever, and arc done intruth and uprightness" (Ps. 110:7-8).Jesus didn't abolish the Ten Commandments. "Think not," He said, "that Icame to destroy the law or the prophets:I came not to destroy, but to fulfill."We must follow His example todayand fulfill the law. We must believe theprophets, roo-s-and obey God as theycommanded us.The Ten Commandments constitutethe basic spiritual law which regulateshuman life. Let usnotice, however, tha t God was merelyrevealing the laws which were already inforce. The old covenant did not establish the spiritual laws.In Exodus 16:28 we read that theEternal, when speaking about Israel toMoses, said: "How long do you refuseto keep my commandments and mylaws?"Israel could not refuse wha t did notexist!Now turn to Exodus 18: 16. Mosestold his father-in-law that when thepeople have a dispute, "I make themknow the statutes of God and his laws."

Other Laws Based on TenCommandments

Notice! Here are the statutes andlaws of God existing BEFORE the oldcovenant. As they existed before the oldcovenant, they could not be abolishedwhen it ceased to exist. The old covenantcould not destroy wha t it did not b ringinto force. The old covenant was merelyan AGREEMENT to keep these laws whichwere already in force!Notice how the statutes and laws ofGod magnify the Ten Commandments:God forbids us to eat unclean meats. Tolust after what He forbids is to covet.One of the Ten Commandments says:"Thou shalt NOT covet."Notice also that God's law made provision for judgments to be establishedover the centuries. (See Numbers 27: 11for example.) The judgments are binding decisions based on God's previouslyrevealed law. The Church of God today from time to time may issue judgments-as in the case of "make-up."But when did the carnal ceremoniesand sacrifices of the Levitical priesthoodbegin? And how can we distinguishthem from the statutes and laws thatexisted prior to the old covenant?When Did Sacrificial Laws Begin?When God brought Israel to the footof Mt. Sinai, He gave the Ten Commandments to them. He allowed Moses

to declare all the statutes and judgmentsto Israel (Exodus, chapters 20-24) .These statutes and judgments MAGNIFYthe Ten Commandments.Now notice carefully. There is onlyone sacrifice men tioned in the book ofthe law-the passover sacrifice (Exodus23:18). God called it "MY sacrifice,"Next, turn to Jeremiah 7:22-23. Listento what the Eternal inspired Jeremiahto write: "For in the day that I broughtthem out of the land of Egypt, I DID NOTSPEAK . . . OR COMMAND them concerning burnt offerings and sacrifices.But this COMMAND I GAVE THEM: 'Obey

The GOOD NEWSmy voice . . . and walk in ALL '.l'H.I:!WAY THAT I COMMAND YOU, that it maybe well with you.' "God did not command these sacrificesto be offered originally. This explainswhy none of those temporary sacrificeswere perpetuated by different symbols inthe New Testament Church. ONLYTHEPASSOVER IS PRESERVED BY DIFFERENTSYMBOLS TODAY-because it began before the old covenant was made. (See itsinstitution in Exodus 12 before theIsraelites left Egypt.)

The very fact that Jesus substitutedunleavened bread and wine for the passover lamb only, and not for the temporary offerings, is absolute proof that theceremonial old testament offerings arenot binding today!- bu t that the passover is binding!Paul says (Gal. 3:19) these temporaryrituals and sacrifices were "added because of transgression"-because God'sspiritual law was being broken-untilChrist should come. They foreshadowedthe sacrifices of Christ and were a"reminder of sin" to teach the peoplethe need of the Messiah who would paythe penalty of human transgression (Hebrews 10:3) .Notice that these temporary laws didno t define sin. They were reminders ofsin. God's spiritual laws define sin. Thelaws which define sin-which explainwhat sin is-these laws we are to keeptoday.

Sacrifices FOREVER?Consider for a moment the NewTestament instructions about sacrifices.Today we have spiritual offerings andsacrifices: "Ye ... are being built untoa holy priesthood, to offer up spiri tualsacrifices, acceptable to God throughJesus Christ," wrote Peter. (See I Peter2:5 and 9.) We are to "present ourbodies a living sacrifice, holy, well-pleasing to God, your spiritual service"(Romans 12: 1) .It is a spiritual principle to offer oneself in living obedience-to sacrifice theself-to God. God Almighty is worthyto receive such service from us.The principle of offering sacrifices existed before Moses. Christ volunteered

to offer Himself from the beginning topay for the sins of mankind. In theperiod from Moses to Christ the practice of giving offerings was reduced toa physical plane. The children of Israelwere a physical, carnal people withoutthe promise of the Holy Spirit. Theycould not offer themselves in spiritualobedience to God (Deur. 29:4), sothey performed ritualistic washings andoffered animals and other physical typesinstead.They also needed to he reminded ofJesus' sacrifice, so God gave them physical types in the "law of Moses," "unti l

But remember,the spiritual sacrific.es-of which thosein the law of Moses were merely temporary types-are still to be offered upby us today!"But," many ask, "weren't the Levitical sacrifices ordained forever?"Yes, the Bible does say that the Levitical priesthood and its sacrifices were tobe perpetual or forever. But let us understand the real significance of the Hebrew word translated "forever." I t meanscontinuous, so long as the factors involved exist.Notice three scriptures where thismeaning is made plain. Men could bethe slaves of a master forever-meaning till the death of one of the parties.(See Exodus 21:6; Lev. 25:46; Deut,15:17.)What are the factors which may limitthe offering of sacrifices? One, the needof a physical, human priesthood. Two,the need for sacrifices.Now consider the following:

What is the purpose of a priesthood?To offer sacrifices and to act on behalfof men in relation to God (Hebrews5: 1 and 8: 3 ). But how long do offerings as reminders of sin need to be made?Paul tells us: "Now where remission o[sins} is, there is no more offering forsin" (Hebrews 10: 18) .To offer sacrifices as reminders of sinsalready paid for by Jesus, who gave Hislife in full payment for all sins, is needless.Moreover, SINCE THE HOLY SPIRITHAS ALSO BEEN MADE AVAILABLEPHYSICAL OFFERINGS AND VARIOUSWASHINGS WHICH ARE TYPES OF THEHOLY SPIRIT ARE NO LONGER NEEDEDHENCE THE PHYSICAL LEVITICALPRIESTHOOD IS NO LONGER NECESSARY- t he old testament washings andofferings are no longer binding. Thefactors involved in the law of Moseceased to exist.

God ALONE Changes LawsPerhaps we have failed to realize thaGod ALONE has the right to add andchange or alter carnal or fleshly lawsThe carnal laws were subject tochange because they were only types o

the promised seed, Christ , who shouldtake upon Himself the sins of the worldWhen the circumstances were alteredthe obligation to practice the carnal lawceased.But what about the spiritual lawsGODWILL NOTALTER HIS SPIRITUALLAWS. The spiritual laws describe thevery character of God. They enable us tknow what God is like. Since the character of God remains unchanging-"change not, saith the Eternal" (Mal3:6) and "Jesus, the same yesterdaytoday, and forever" (Heb. 13:8)-thspiritual laws could not change.

November, 1957Nuw let us notice where we can findexactly what constituted the temporarylaws. Turn with me to Hebrews 9:9-10.

Carnal Laws Distinguishedfrom OthersIn these two verses we read of the material gifts and sacrifices which included

"ONLY meats and drinks and diversewashings-earnal ordinances, imposeduntil the time of reformation."Notice that the temporary laws didnot pertain to murder or theft or sabbath-breaking, but were ONLY thoseordinances regulat ing meat and drinkofferings and different washings or ablutions of the unclean. These externalwashings were a type of the Holy Spiritcleaning us up within.ANY OTHER LAWS NOT INCLUDED INHEBREWS 9:10 WERE NOT PART OFTHE RITUALS ADDED BECAUSE OF SIN!Remember this point!

I t will help you to know which rites inthe old testament were added to the~ t a t u t e s and judgments already in exisrence.

What Is the Law of Moses?Some people are easily confused bythe trick srarernent that the Ten Commandments are the law of Moses. Theyturn to Luke 2:22-24 in which the ceremonies of the "law of Moses" are alsocalled par t of the "law of the Lord."Why is the "law of Moses" also calledthe "law of the Lord"?Because all law comes from God!Moses is not the lawmaker! He merelytold the people the laws that God set

in motion (John 1: 17).The law of Moses is NEVER calledthe Ten Commandments. It comprisesonly statutes and judgments which Godgave him to communicate to the people.The difference between the law of Mosesand the Ten Commandments is that Godspoke the ten words, but Moses deliveredthe statutes and judgments.Now, let us recall that when Mosesfirst delivered the statutes and judgments,the law of Moses had no sacrifices connected with it. Jeremiah said so! ( Je r.7:22) .The law of Moses was originally thecivil law, based on the principles of theTen Commandments. These civil statutesand judgments are right and good(Psalm 119:7,8).But after the close of the old covenant(Ex. 24), the Levitical priesthood wasestablished and the laws regulating offerings were added (Exodus 28: 1). (Priorto this time offerings were voluntary andyoung men were priests-Exodus 24: 5.)Therefore the law of Moses has morethan one part!Notice God's definition of the original part of that law in Malachi 4:4:"Remember the law of my servant

The GOOD NEWSMoses, the statutes and judgments thatI commanded him at Horeb for allIsrael."This law we are not to forget. We areto keep it!BUTADDED TOTHIS LAW LATER WEREOTHER STATUTES REGULATING MATE-RIAL R ITUALS, SUC H AS SACRIFICES,LIGHTING OF CANDLES, BURNING INCE NS E, A ND VARIOU S W ASH IN GS FORTHE UNCLEAN.Thi s almost unnoticed fact is whatcauses so much difficulty in understanding that the LAW OF MOSES WAS COM-POSED OF two DISTINCT PARTS: THECIVIL AND THERITUALISTIC!Part of Law of Moses Sti ll in Force!Jesus said the two great commandments were love to God and love toneighbor. Do you know from where Hequoted these laws?Out of the book of the law!-the lawsthat Moses spoke to the people. Readit in Leviticus 19:18: "You shall loveyour neighbor as yourself." And Deuteronomy 6A: "You shall love the Lordyour God with all your heart, and withall your soul, and with all your might."In II John 5 and 6, God commandsChristians to obey these two basic lawswhich He communicated to the peopleby Moses! In II Kings 23: 25, Josiah ispraised because he "turned to the Lordwith all his heart and with all his souland with all his might, ACCORDING TOTHE LAW OF MOSES!"Notice how plain it is. The civil lawof Moses expounds the Ten Commandments by revealing how the ten basic

principles are to be applied. We are tokeep this part of the law, nut in thestrictness of the letter, but according toits spiri t and intent.Added Part NO LONGER in ForceThen why do we read in Acts thatGentile converts do not have to observe the "law of Moses," except for fourpoints? (Acts 15.) The answer is madeplain in Acts 21: 21.The laws of Moses called in questioninvolved "customs." Read it for yourself.

The Jews were falsely accusing Paul,saying that he taught Jews living abroad"not to circumcise their chi ldren or observe the CUSTOMS!" (Acts 21: 21.)The controversy in the early Churchdid not involve the civil law of Moses.I t involved only the ceremonial additions to the original civil law of Moses-only customs-ADDED ceremonies orrituals.This is further proven by noticing thefour points, included in the law addedby Moses, which are binding on allChristians everywhere. We are not toeat blood, animals which are strangled,meats offered to idols or to practice fornication. These four points were .orig-

Page 11inally part of the civil law of Moses.They were also included later withthe added ceremonies to regulate thetypical sacrifices. The Gentiles are theirsacrifices with the blood, often strangledtheir animals, and presented them toidols. They also committed fornicationin their religious ceremonies. To preventthese pagan customs being practised byIsrael, God included the four civil lawsalong with the rituals. (See Lev. 17: 7and 10; Numbers 25: 1-3.)When the ceremonies were declaredno longer binding (in Acts 15), thesefour points had to be declared bindingbecause some would have thought theywere abolished along with the temporary rituals. But since these fourpoint s were par t of the civil law beforethe addition of the rituals, they remained binding after the abolition ofthe physical sacrifices and washings!How plain! Only the ceremonial customs of the law of Moses have passedaway.The civil law of Moses which definedsin was not called in question, was notinvolved.The many civil laws regulating tithing, clean and unclean meats, the annual sabbaths, and many others are stillfor the New Testament Church becausethey explain what sin is. They were notpart of the ceremonial law of Mosesmentioned in Hebrews 9: 10 and abolished in Acts 15. The civil principlesof the law of Moses were a separate lawand not par t of the added "law of Moses"which is no longer in force.

Ministration of DeathNow let consider the use of thedeath penalty in old testament times.A common question often asked isthis: Why do we not enforce the deathpenalty for sabbath-breakers or for anyother violation of the Ten Commandments?The answer to this quest ion is foundin Matthew 5. Let us turn to this important chapter again. Jesus was anticipat ing doubts in the minds of the disciples. He commences by saying He cameto keep the law, not to destroy it. ThenHe proceeds to CHANGE the APPLICA-TION of the civil laws as they weregiven to ancient Israel. He magnifiesthem and makes them honorable. Heraises them from narrow, national laws-given to a carnal nat ion to be administered according to the strict letterto a spiritual plane regulating the wholeof human society. Six times Jesus says:"You have hearcl it said in olden times... . But I say to you...." and He thenproceeds to expound the spiri tual principles underlying the civil laws of Moses.In part icular, not ice Matthew 5:38:"You have heard that it was said, 'An(Please continue on next page)

"The carnal mind is enmityagainst God: for it is nor subject to thelaw of God" (Rom. 8: 7). Israel neededpun ishment s for lawbreakers to keep

ThereforeGod allowed human judges to take Hisdivine prerogatives and to execute punishments on thei r fellow men.
