Let me introduce Ed Albergo, if you haven’t already met him. Ed was born in East Boston, Massachusetts, on September 7, 1926. He had a usual childhood growing up in Boston, as an only child. His good work ethic began around age 10 when he worked at his father’s market selling fresh fruits, vegetables, and fish. At age 16 he learned how to weld and became proficient enough to make a living. Knowing his skills were needed in ship building and repairing, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, September 15, 1944, just prior to his 18th birthday. He attended “boot camp” in Sampson, New York and then to Norman, OK for technical training. After completing training he was sent to San Diego, CA waiting for a position. Soon he found himself on a ship for the first time traveling to his first naval assignment at the Naval Operating Base, Adak, Alaska. In Alaska, Ed was with a ship repair unit where they trained and prepared for the invasion of Japan. The plan was to establish a beach head but Japan surrendered before the plan could be carried out. Ed chuckles when he says “….at one time I was one of the highest ranking enlisted sailors on the base. Not bad for a 19 year old kid!” He attained the rank of Ship Fitter Third Class and like his buddies, he earned a WWII Victory Medal, American Area Medal and Asiatic-Pacific Area Medal (Alaska was not yet part of the United States). After being discharged June 19, 1946, Ed returned to Massachusetts where he worked in just about every ship yard in the state. He held two fulltime jobs, one in a government yard and one at General Electric. At GE he was proud to be a part in helping to manufacture the first jet turbine engine for ships. In 1974, the government transferred Ed to a Long Beach, California Naval Ship Yard where they needed welders. Ed worked 30 years for the government before finally retiring in 1986. For the past 64 years, Ed has had his wife Adele by his side, also a native of Boston. They had four children – Edward Jr., Phillip, Joseph, and Mary. Mary died of leukemia at age 21. Edward lives in California, Phillip in Arizona, and Joseph in Massachusetts. Edward and Joseph are both U.S. Air Force Veterans. They have two grandchildren. Adele worked in VA hospitals in Massachusetts and California. In 1990, Adele and Ed found SVE and wondered if they had made a mistake coming here as the thermometer registered 122 degrees the day they bought their lot on Lakeview. Ed was on SVE’s Billiard Team for 17 years, has enjoyed cribbage and cards, particularly poker. For many years you would see them regularly at the swimming pool. They have enjoyed their retirement years at SVE and were happy the extremely hot day in 1990 did not deter their decision to move here. Today they enjoy “living the retirement” life. Ed, we are grateful for your service in the U.S. Navy and your contributions to the war effort. Our nation’s fleet depended upon superior welders and it sounds as if you answered the call very well! CALLING ALL VETERANSSVE is the home of many, many military veterans. I’ve

heard many times, how much SVE residents enjoy reading the “Salute To Our Veterans” column in the monthly SVE Outlook.

We want to hear about you. I know it is sometimes hard to “toot your own horn” and share your experiences because it seems like someone has done more, served longer, or may have had a more interesting career….but everyone does have their own story. And your military experience is very important to the SVE community.

Mary Jean Crider interviews and writes the “Salute to Our Veterans” article. She would love to hear from you and write about your military service.

From one veteran to another – share your story with your SVE friends. We would love to hear from you.

MANAGER’S KORNEROver the last few years, exercise has become a major activity

for many in our society. Seniors, in particular, have come to realize we cannot expect to stay healthy by accident anymore. As our bodies age, we have to become actively involved in maintaining our health. Consequently, we see more and more seniors spending time on treadmills and other such equipment in an attempt to stay healthy. What most seniors don’t realize is that it is equally important to add resistance training to our exercise regime. Many believe weight training is just for those who are trying to add muscle and increase strength, but experts tell us weight training is essential if you want to have good health. However, before you begin any weight training, be sure to check with your doctor to see if there are any health situations you should consider. Please don’t just go into the weight room and start lifting weights. You can cause a lot of problems for yourself if you don’t know what you are doing. For more information on weight training for seniors, check out the website http://weighttraining.about.com and read the articles by Paul Rogers.

THANK YOUThank you to all the neighbors and friends of my

mother, Josephine Schaeffer for their cards, letters, and phone calls received after her recent death. Your thoughts and prayers were gratefully received by her family.Dolores Koplin

I would like to thank everyone for the cards, phone calls, visits, and prayers I received after my husband, LeRoy passed away. The people here in SVE make this Village the best place to live.Lila Brekke

GRATITUDE OVER THE YEARS

As one becomes older, his or her activities abbreviate, although ones’ spirit lingers on. Recently, Mary Ann Carlson passed away. She was always active and often said, “SVE was hard to beat as a senior living quarters.” It is with many thanks to all who knew her for their kind expressions of sympathy and regret. God bless you and always continue your neighborliness and cordiality. After 65 years, I have many wonderful memories of Mary Ann.Ted Carlson

CHAPEL NOTESPastor Richard Koerselman

A Vacation or a Pilgrimage My dad didn’t like vacations. The only family vacation I remember was a short jaunt

from our Northwest Iowa farm to the Black Hills of South Dakota. It lasted for a few, short days and before we knew it, we were back home milking the cows and slopping the hogs.

My dad didn’t even like a day off. If we were to travel to our relatives for a holiday gathering,

he would invariably start a big job in the morning, like tearing apart the transmission of the M-Farmhall International tractor or installing a new electric fence to keep the hogs from getting too nosy. My mother would have to yell at him again and again before he’d halt his holiday project. Then after we would milk the cows, feed the chickens, get the eggs, slop the hogs and feed the cattle, our family of six would pile in the big Buick, fl y low on the gravel roads, and fi nally get to dinner. . . . .late.

What Dad did like to do was work. He was the happiest man in the world when he would pull the trip chain, drop the 3 bottom plow and turn over the rich, black Iowa soil in preparation for the planting of a new crop of corn. Today he would be call a 24/7 man. He loved his work.

It is no surprise that I don’t do too well on vacations either. I get restless quickly, sort of fi dgety. I wonder what is going on back home. I open my brief case and try to get some work done. I like working because it makes me feel more worthwhile. I grew up thinking vacations were for lazy people.

Maybe the problem is with the word vacation. The root word “vacate” is defi ned as: “leave what was previously occupied;” “give up;” “cancel or annul;” “make ineffective;” “left empty.”

I don’t know about you, but I don’t like any of those meanings. If that is what vacation means, who wants to vacate?

Some years ago my wife and I took a trip to the great Northwest in British Columbia. She is a ceramic and jewelry artist - retired from a lifetime of teaching the visual arts - so we decided to visit the artists on Vancouver Island and the surrounding smaller islands. Most all of these artists were fi ercely independent in that they were working day and night, creating and selling their art as their primary business.

When we arrived on Vancouver Island, we picked up a map and began our journey of visiting one artist after another, listening to their stories, and discovering their joys and their woes. Some were Americans who initially intended to travel Canada for a few years and then head back home but ended up staying there and starting up a business. Most, though, were Canadians who either grew up there or moved west from back east.

As we talked with these artists, we lost track of time and what day it was. Some welcomed us to stay for a few hours, talk with them, and observe them doing their craft. My wife would share with them some of the projects she had going. For one week we met fascinating people, saw them create exciting projects and heard about the challenges of making a living out of what was their fi rst love - art. We became so engrossed in our visits and so lost in the world of the artists we met, we came to the conclusion that this was anything but a vacation.

When I look back on it, vacation doesn’t describe our trip. What did we vacate? We gained much more than we gave up.

There are other words that seem to fi t much better, like a combination of two works, journey or pilgrimage. The dictionary defi nes a pilgrimage as a journey to a place associated with someone or something well known or respected. Another says a pilgrimage is a journey to a place that has religious or emotional signifi cance; such as a pilgrimage to the Holy Land sites in Israel, or traveling to a place where one’s father died.

We go on a pilgrimage when we go to places we value that can fi ll out lives with new information, new meaning, and maybe even change how we look on the world and on ourselves.

In an interesting little article, “Why We Travel; A Love Affair with the World,” by Pico Iyer taken from the book, “The Best Spiritual Writing in 1999,” edited by Philip Zaleski, Iyer says the following: “Travel spins us around in two ways at once: it shows us the sights and values and issues that we ordinarily might ignore; but it also, and more deeply, show us all the parts of ourselves that might otherwise grow rusty.”

I certainly wish you a safe vacation, but I hope your travels will be more like a pilgrimage, where you will drink in the beauty of God’s creation, learn about some family history, remember the great sacrifi ces made by our service men and women who protect our freedoms, stop at a place you usually pass by and enjoy its beauty. And above all, give thanks to God that in our short lives here on earth, we are basically pilgrims, enjoying the journey as we travel along. We just may come home changed people not because we only looked outside of ourselves to see more and more beauty around us, but also because we began to look inward and see the beauty that God has created within each of us, as Iyer says, “Seeing those parts of ourselves that might otherwise grow rusty.”

Have a happy pilgrimage.

Town Hall Meetings For The South Complex Fitness Building Are

ScheduledWe invite you to attend Town

Hall Meetings which will be held in the SVE Auditorium on August 4 at 10:00 a.m. and on August 16 at 7:00 p.m. They will feature a power point presentation on the proposed construction of the building and the fi tness equipment. The presentation

will be led by our Construction committee chairman, Paul Christoffers. The dates for these meeting were set by the SVE Board of Directors in cooperation with the Fitness Building Committee.

After a thorough study of the need for a new facility was made by a residential study group last year, the Board of Directors decided to proceed with this project. The SVE Board considered the needs of our residents and the statistics on the desires of young retirees looking for fi tness opportunities when purchasing a retirement home. The SVE Board of Directors gave full consideration to three possible locations before deciding on the location at the Northwest corner of the South Complex. It was chosen because it was the most accessible, had the best options for parking and was the most architecturally desirable.

The current Fitness Committee was appointed by the SVE Board of Directors on March 26, 2012 and were given the following mission statement: “The mission of this committee is to develop a fi nal design and specifi cations, parking options, exercise equipment proposals, fund raising, obtain at least three competitive bids, recommend a contractor and submit all bids and recommendations to the Board of Directors.”

The fi tness committee was divided into subcommittees on construction, equipment and promotion for the purpose of effi ciency: Our subcommittee on construction received four sealed bids, opened on June 1 by the subcommittee, and has submitted its recommendation to the Board of Directors. The equipment committee has three proposals ready for presentation at the Town hall meetings and the promotion committee is hard at work keeping all the residents informed.

The cost of construction and selected equipment will be covered by the use of the designated Capital Fund if approved by the residents. This will eliminate the need for a special assessment for the construction of the building and the purchase of designated equipment. Annual dues will only be minimally effected by the cost of maintenance and utilities.

The SVE Board will be sending a ballot to all SVE residents in late August. We want to move forward and not fall behind. We want SVE to be a progressive active adult community. The members of the South Complex Fitness Building Committee will appreciate your support.

Security BriefsMariellen Moore

During the month of June the number of garage doors being left open substantially decreased. There were 30 homes and 10 condos that needed to be notifi ed by our security team. As the month progressed, there were 5 nights with no open door reports – KUDOS to you all!

Three incidents occurred which were resolved; two with the assistance of the Mesa PD and one resident may have been gone for an overnight period and the garage door was open. Police were called to enter and determine whether there had been an intruder. When the resident returned, he indicated nothing had been touched and commended security for the procedure used in securing the garage and house in his absence. The second was a tire slashing of a resident’s car. The third event was a couple of boys fi shing in the duck pond.

An alert from the police - be cautious regarding calls alleging to be grandchildren in need of bail money – the scam is circulating once again.

GOLF CONDO II Wanda Katzman

As I write this on July 10 at 1:00 p.m. for sure I am not on my patio as it is a 110 degrees and a bright sunny day. We are having a long hot summer, of course, but thank heavens for our AC and a well built home.

Not much news from our quiet street today. For those of you away at your summer homes, I have little to tell you. Our group of widows continue to gather for weekly outings - Jan, Betty, Neva, Mary, Jane, Joy, Bev, Harriet, Flo, and me. Once a week we check out different spots for dinner and sometimes even breakfast. There is some word from our neighbors who are having health problems while they are away. Joanne Wolf is so good to keep us informed about Joe’s recovery. He is in rehab in Minnesota and we all think of them often and hope a complete recovery is in the future. Her email address is: [email protected] if you would like to support her. We also have word that Audrey Naefke is recovering well from her recent joint replacement. Jan Lanning has had so many health problems lately. Bev Hawk recently fell and badly injured her arm but it is almost healed at this date. We wish them all complete recoveries. I imagine Joy Stevens will have a hard time walking without the boot now.

We have word also that Jep Bosshart is in a care facility near her home in

Denver and Harold is with her often. Now just a word on the stimulus adventure I am

having. After a couple hospital visits in June, I am fi nally without pain meds. The neurosurgeon with the company called Medtronics rep. at his side, inserted a device on my upper spinal column and a battery pack in my lower right back. After the three weeks of healing of incisions, I have to say I am free of back pain. I am able to increase or decrease the stimulas to the pinched nerve in my spine. I am happy to talk more on the subject if needed.

We look forward to the fall and our neighbors returning. Happy summer!

SUNLAND STITCHERS

Freda KleinIt may be over 100 degrees

outside but the Stitchers keep sewing in the cool Oakwood Room. There is a faithful group who come every Monday and Wednesday.

Bev Hasslinger and I delivered 4 quilts to

Hospice of Arizona. They have created a very homey atmosphere in their 14 bed facility. They put a quilt in every

room and if the family wishes to keep the quilt, they may.

Otherwise they wash it and put it back for another person to use.

Several people have taken to using their scraps and have cut smaller sized strips, sewn them together into beautiful quilts and now have a smaller stash and there are more charity quilts.

I am working on another one of Elaine Ekdoms cut outs and am nearing the last border - there are 8 of them.

We received a thank you card from Hospice of Arizona.

SVE LADIES GOLFSVE Ladies Golf League sponsored the Independence

Have a Safe, Healthy, Happy Summer.

TENNIS TALKJim Laframboise

Here it is, time for the August Tennis Talk and all is quiet at SVE. Aha, here is my opportunity to present Jim’s Summer Tennis Observations. Feast your eyes on these tidbits of information and pearls of wisdom.

Drink lots of Water. Have you seen those shriveled, dried-up fl owers in the back yard? They look like that because they didn’t drink enough water. You too will look like a wilted plant if you don’t stay hydrated.

Seek shade and wear a hat. When both the ball and your opponents appear to shimmer on the court, take it as a hint - it’s time to cool off. Also see #1.

Sweat is healthy. It’s like a modern-day diet drug. Of course, like most diet drugs, the benefi t lasts about as long as the next pizza and beer. But dang, the scale sure looks good for a fl eeting moment.

Use good deodorant. Fail to use it and your friends will ban you from sitting on the bench with them during breaks.

Lather up with suntan lotion. Remember when you gawked at that cruise ship passenger, who spent the fi rst day of the cruise lounging at the pool, without applying any suntan lotion. You too, can look red as a beet and groan in agony if you forget suntan lotion.

Wear sun glasses. Not only will you look like a movie star but sunglasses also will help prevent your eyes from clouding over, like you are living in an unending San Francisco fog.

Love cloud cover. A rare sight in Arizona. It’s even better when you lie on the grass like a kid, watching the sky and giving names to each cloud shape that fl oats by. Look at that giraffe!!

Look cool. Even if your tennis game is not up to par, be just as poised and dress just as sharply as Roger Federer and you, too, will look like a tennis pro – just don’t step onto the courts.

Want rain? Wash tennis courts. It brings a thunderstorm even quicker than washing your car.

When all else fails, just get out of town for a few days. Just a short time away will make you appreciate the benefi ts of living at SVE all the more. It may not be perfect here, but it sure beats all the competition

Okay, okay! Maybe you don’t agree with my observations. But this is what happens when I stay out in the sun too long. Stay safe, keep cool and have a fun summer.

SEE YOU AT THE TENNIS COURTS!

CLUBS & SPORTSDOGS ‘R US

FRECKLES: Cavalier King Charles SpanielL. Paulsen

Freckles says, “I live in SVE with my family Dave and Nona Grimm. Dave takes me for walks in the evening, which I really enjoy, and I get to meet some of my four legged friends along the way. Dave is teaching me to ‘sit’ and ‘stay’, then he calls me and I run to him to get petted and a treat (I really like the treat!). In my picture you can see me run, but normally I am rather laid back and would rather walk or lay down. I don’t bark much except when I watch TV and see animals; then I let them know that this is my house and they are not welcome. I am looking forward to meeting more of you when I take my walks. See you soon.”

Take care not to leave your dog outside in these hot temperatures, and be sure to provide lots of water. The cement can be very hot, so test it with the palm of your hand before you walk your dog. Remember, your dog is really close to the ground. It’s best to walk early in the morning and after the sun goes down.

RED HAT SOCIETYJan Varner

We had another fun and entertaining Red Hat Tea on June 27th. We thank Group 4 for hosting the Tea. They decorated all the tables with fresh Bougainvillea’s and served a variety of cookies. The ladies dressed in purple with some kind of Red Hats, which makes the room look so pretty.

Our Queen Mother, Ruth Weston, had a short meeting and gave us an update of coming events. She also read some very funny and entertaining jokes that we enjoyed, creating a lot of laughter. It is always a good time.

One group read a nice poem in honor of a Red Hat lady who is 93 and is in their group. The title was “I Love to Live”, and it was so appropriate.

We had two guests who joined us and they became members. It’s a lot of fun for a very low cost. We meet every 4th Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. in the Mesa Verde Room. If you’d like to be our guest or need information, please call Ruth Weston, 480- 247-9928.

SUNSATIONAL TAP DANCE CLUB

Mary Jean CriderDo I hear tapping? Not much, as most dancers have

exited the valley for cooler locations. A few of us, though, are still practicing once or twice a month to help us remember our routines for the next shows coming up March 5 and March 9, 2013.

Do I hear the whir of sewing machines? Yes, as the costume committee members are busy stitching costumes for our Tribute to the USO, “Thanks for the Memories” Revue .

Is tap dancing an enjoyable activity? For the mind and body, you can bet it is! For more information on how you can join our group, call Alicia Hall, 480-354-7151.

SVE BINGOTHANKS YOU

BINGO Management would like to thank all that played BINGO this past season. On our last Sunday, June 24th, we gave away our Lucky Ball prize worth $900. The best part was the prize was split between 2 SVE’ers – Emma (Bonnie) Baker and Sharon Morin. While there is no regular BINGO during August, we look forward to seeing you at our THIRD ANNUAL FREE BINGO APPRECIATION DAY, Thursday, August 30th, at 2 p.m. in the SVE Auditorium. And we hope to see you on Sunday, September 9th, at our new time, 6 p.m. for the new BINGO season.
