The Scenario… For over a week, Nelly has talked about middle school soccer tryouts. “World Cup, here I come!” she yells, dribbling the ball between two orange cones in the backyard.

Friday morning, Nelly is visibly tense. She pokes at her cereal and instigates a fight with her dad, Delly. In an attempt to calm her nerves, Delly reassures, “I’ll be rooting for you today. Remember what I’ve been saying – you’re so talented, there’s no reason to be nervous.”

“Dad, I’m not sure I wanna go out for soccer anymore.” She hangs her head down and mumbles, “I’m just going to take the bus home after school.”

Delly probes gently, “Did something happen?” Nelly concludes, “I just… I just don’t want to try out.”

1. Read the slide.2. Discuss the following question

with your table partner:

Why do you think the girl might not want to go out for

soccer?

“When we learn a growth mindset, we understand no one is fixed and that everyone has the potential for change.”

a real challenge, they often…

refuse to take advantage of extra helpconsider cheating on future tests tend to avoid the challenging classes all together

Intelligence may be partly inherited, but it is also influenced strongly be the environment.

When you make a mistake, it means you’re just not good at what you’re trying.

No one in my family is good at_______

I like to hear about other people’s successes, because this inspires me.

Examples of a FIXED MINDSET Examples of a GROWTH MINDSET

When someone criticizes me, it means they think I can do better.

You can actually get more intelligent over time.

I’m always being judged and evaluated and I have to try to appear smart.

It’s best to take risks and challenge yourself, even if you’re not sure you can do it.

When you make a mistake, it means you have a chance to learn something new.

I haven’t mastered this idea yet.

Some people are just born smart.

I’m always finding opportunities to learn something new.

If someone criticizes me, it means they think I’m not good enough.

If you have to work hard, then you’re not very smart.

It’s best to do things you know you know how to do.

I compare my score to those of my friends and if theirs are higher, I feel bad.

Hard work is how you become successful.

You can’t really change how intelligent you are.

ONE OF THE LESSONS THAT I GREW UP WITH WAS TO ALWAYS STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF AND NEVER LET WHAT SOMEBODY ELSE SAYS DISTRACT YOU FROM YOUR GOALS. AND SO WHEN I HEAR ABOUT NEGATIVE AND FALSE ATTACKS, I REALLY DON'T INVEST ANY ENERGY IN THEM, BECAUSE I KNOW WHO I AM.-MICHELLE OBAMA

EVERYBODY HAS GOALS, ASPIRATIONS OR WHATEVER, AND EVERYBODY HAS BEEN AT A POINT IN THEIR LIFE WHERE NOBODY BELIEVED IN THEM.-EMINEM

I HAVE SHORT GOALS - TO GET BETTER EVERY DAY, TO HELP MY TEAMMATES EVERY DAY - BUT MY ONLY ULTIMATE GOAL IS TO WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP. IT'S ALL THAT MATTERS. I DREAM ABOUT IT. I DREAM ABOUT IT ALL THE TIME, HOW IT WOULD LOOK, HOW IT WOULD FEEL. IT WOULD BE SO AMAZING.- LEBRON JAMES

EVERY SEASON IS A NEW CHALLENGE TO ME, AND I ALWAYS SET OUT TO IMPROVE IN TERMS OF GAMES, GOALS, ASSISTS.- CRISTIANO RONALDO
