From Youth Foundation to Junior Basketball Club CommitteeEarly 2012 Tamika Clancy was nominated by the Principal of the Neerim District Secondary College as she showed potential as a young leader within the college.

During the year Tamika spent most weeks at support committee meetings for Youth Foundation Neerim District before heading to her weekly game of basketball and assisting with the junior grades, getting the scoreboard and score sheets ready and sometimes working in the canteen.

As time progresses throughout the year Tamika became more involved in discussions with people she was familiar with. She nominated a possible grant, interviewed grant applicants, applied for a grant on line and assessed grants.

At the grant presentation in October 2012 Tamika surprised all with her ease of public speaking in front of an audience of 90 people. She made presentations and accepted a grant.

Throughout 2013 her studies prevented Tamika from attending youth support committee meetings, but she willingly stepped up and joined the committee of the Neerim District Junior Basketball Club.

Her role on the committee involves helping in the canteen when help is needed. At the moment Tamika does not have a permanent role on the committee but has mentioned she may be interested in coaching a junior team in the near future.

Youth Foundation has given Tamika the opportunity to come out of her shell a bit and learn to not only come up with ideas, but share them out loud. She has learnt how to apply for grants and the very painful process that comes with them. She has grown tremendously in her confidence and is now showing a more confident side to herself at school and in the community.

Tamika is now mentioning Youth Foundation for possible grants and keeping them as a resource, as she knows the good work they do. She is also waiting for the writer’s camp in term 4 which is the grant that Tamika applied for last year.
