Good Afternoon!Today we will be learning about

Median and range

Let’s warm up :

Find the Mean of these numbers?

1) 5, 6, 8, 9, 8

2) 2, 7, 12, 8, 13, 6

3) 5, 6, 8, 9, 8

4) 2, 7, 12, 8, 13, 6

Find the Mode of these numbers?

Let’s review what we did in the last session

Mean: It is just the average of the numbers.

To find the mean, find the sum of the numbers in the data set and divide the sum by the number of

addends.

Mode: is the number that occurs most frequently in a data set.

If no number is repeated, then there is no mode for the list.

To find the mode or modal value you have to put the numbers you are given in an order.

Find the Mean of these numbers?

6, 8, 7

Add the numbers: 6 + 8 + 7 = 21

Divide by the number of numbers : 21 ÷ 3 = 7

The Mean is 7.

3, 7, 5, 13, 20, 23, 39, 23, 40, 23, 14, 12, 56, 23, 29

Add the numbers: 3+7+5+13+20+23+39+23+40+23+14+12+56+23+29

= 330

The mean is equal to 330 ÷ 15 = 22

The mean of the numbers is 22.

Negative Numbers

Adding a negative number is the same as subtracting the number.

Find the Mean of these numbers?

7, -2, 9, 13, -5

The sum of these numbers is: = 7-2+9+13-5 = 22

Divide by the number of numbers . = 22 ÷ 5 = 4.4

There are 5 numbers.

The mean of the numbers is 4.4.

A student has gotten the following grades on his tests: 87, 95, 76, and 88. What is the

average grade he achieved in the test?

Add the scores : 87 + 95 + 76 + 88 = 346

The scores are: 87, 95, 76, and 88

Divide the sum of the scores by the number of numbers : 346 ÷ 4 = 86.5

The average grade achieved by the student is 86.5.

Find the mode for the following list of values:

13, 18, 13, 14, 13, 16, 14, 21, 13

Rewrite the list in order:

13, 13, 13, 13, 14, 14, 16, 18, 21

The mode is the number that is repeated more often than any

other.

So, 13 is the mode.

Mode: 13

Find the mode for the following list of values:

The mode is the number that is repeated most often, but all the numbers appear

only once.

Then there is no mode.

Mode: 0

Let’s start withMedian and range

Apart from Mean and Mode there are other units also. These are Median and Range.

Today we will learn about these two terms.

Median: It's the middle number in a sorted list.

To find the Median, place the numbers you are given in numerical order

and find the middle number.

Page 9: Good Afternoon!

CONFIDENTIAL 9

There can be two cases when finding the median for a given list of values.

Case1: If there are an odd amount of numbers.

Position of Middle number = (Total number of numbers + 1) ÷ 2

Case2: If there are an even amount of numbers.

In that case we need to find the middle pair of numbers.

The median is the mean (the usual average) of the middle two values.

The median is the value of the middle number.

CONFIDENTIAL 10

Find the median for the following list of values:

13, 18, 13, 14, 13, 16, 14, 21, 13

We rewrite the list in order: 13, 13, 13, 13, 14, 14, 16, 18, 21

There are nine numbers in the list.

Our middle number will be the fifth number.

The median value of this set of numbers is 14.

13, 13, 13, 13, 14, 14, 16, 18, 21

Median = 14

1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 8

Find the median for the following list of values:

We see that there are an even amount of numbers i.e. 6.

So, the middle pair of numbers are: 3 and 4

The numbers are already listed in numerical order, so you don't have to rewrite the list.

1, 2, 4, 6, 7, 8

To find the value half-way between them, add them together and divide by 2:

4 + 6 = 1010 ÷ 2 = 5

The median value of this set of numbers is 5.

Median = 5

20, 19, 13, 10, 18, 11, 19, 15, 12, 10

Find the median for the following list of values:

We rewrite the list in order: 10, 10, 11, 12, 13, 15, 18, 19, 19, 20

There are ten numbers in the list.

So, the middle pair of numbers are: 13 and 1510, 10, 11, 12, 13, 15, 18, 19, 19, 20

Add middle pair of numbers together and divide by 2:

13 + 15 = 2828 ÷ 2 = 14

The median value of this set of numbers is 14 .

Median = 14

Range: It is the difference between the greatest and least number in a data set.

To find the Range in a given data set,

Subtract the Smallest number from Greatest number

i.e.

Range = Largest value - Smallest value

Page 14: Good Afternoon!

CONFIDENTIAL 14

Find the range for the following list of values:

13, 18, 13, 14, 13, 16, 14, 21, 13

We rewrite the list in order: 13, 13, 13, 13, 14, 14, 16, 18, 21

Smallest value in the list is 13. AND

Largest value in the list is 21.

Range = Largest value - Smallest value = 21 – 13 = 8

The Range of this set of numbers is 8.

Range = 8
