Now for the Notes• We are now going to focus on matter

and all of it’s glorious differences and changes…

Chemical vs. Physical Properties.•Chemical properties are properties

of an element or compound in chemical reactions. For example, the fact that sodium reacts with water is a chemical property.

• Example: •Physical properties are properties

of an element or compound that can be observed without a chemical reaction of the substance. A substance's color and density are physical properties.

• Example:

Chemical vs. Physical Changes

•In a physical change, the substances are not altered chemically, but merely changed to another phase (i.e. gas, liquid, solid) separated or combined.

•Example:•In a chemical change, the

substances are altered chemically and display different physical and chemical properties after the change.

•Example:

Good Day 04/20/23• Starter: (only write down the bold part)

yesterday we said that a chemical property can only be observed during a chemical reaction, how do you know when a chemical reaction has taken place?

• Schedule:

– Head to the internet for an online quiz

– See a few examples of Chemical verses Physicals Changes

Page 7: Good Afternoon! 10/20/2015 Starter: Which is a better choice to put out your lab partner if they are on fire, the fire blanket or the fire extinguisher?

Now half of you will go to the laptops and take an online

quiz while the rest will answer the questions about the graph on the back of the

worksheet, then we will switch.

The most common and often confusing Physical Change is

is a change in state.•A change in state is when an

object goes from a solid to a liquid or a liquid to a gas or a gas to a liquid, you get the idea. Well we have a graph for you that should help clear this up.

Now for the Demos

Watch the demos and see if you can figure out which are physical changes and Chemical Changes.

• Potassium (K) and water?

• Copper Chloride and water?

• Hydrogen balloon?

• Liquid Nitrogen on balloon?

Answers• Potassium (K) and water• Chemical, gave off heat and light, won’t get

it back if you boil the water.• Copper Chloride and water• Physical, it just dissolved, if you boil the

water (physical change) you can get them back

• Hydrogen balloon• Chemical, it combined with oxygen in the air• Liquid Nitrogen on balloon• Changed shape by slowing down, because

it was colder
