Dear Parents/Carers As we come to the end of what has been an incredibly successful year for Longfield Academy, I am filled with pride to lead such a fantastic community. Our Ofsted report completely supported our ethos of inclusion and achievement. As we now wait to see the final outcomes of the public exams, it is a good chance to reflect on the hard work that has been put in by students and staff. The commitment and resilience of many of our students has been truly amazing. This newsletter is full of some great articles about events that have happened this term, but also includes some key guidance around uniform. Please take the time to read it carefully. Similarly, it is important for me to remind parents to be considerate of our local community. Our neighbours in the private Chase housing development are increasingly frustrated by the amount of inconsiderate parking that has built up. If car collection is the only option for travel, please ensure that you are arranging a pick up venue further afield from the Academy to avoid unnecessary traffic blockage. So, as we head into the summer break, it leaves me only to say that I hope the students and staff have an excellent, restful and safe summer. I look forward to welcoming the students back in September. Mrs A O’Donnell An Academy is only as good as the staff that are part of it. I am always in awe of the work that is undertaken within, but also above and beyond the classroom - the trips, the quiet conversations, the productions, and most importantly the care and attention that the staff have for the students. Consequently I have been so pleased with the success of our Staff Recognition awards, where over 100 parents have nominated staff for their excellent work. It is a small gesture, but one that is very much appreciated. If you would like to nominate a teacher, please see our website for details. Thursday 12th July saw the second annual LAT Awards take place. It was a great event to celebrate the achievements of some of our very best staff and governors across the Trust. Nominees were put forward by their colleagues and winners were decided by an independent panel of judges. Overall Longfield had 6 nominations - Mrs Monks, Miss Chester, Mr Speake, Mrs Higson, Mr Chambers and Mrs Mulholland. I am immensely proud that both Mr Chambers and Mrs Monks were recognised with special awards.

Mrs A O’Donnell

An Academy is only as good as the staff that are part of it.

Goodbye… It really is the end of an era. After 42 years of tireless service, Lee Croxton is entering his well-deserved retirement. Numerous colleagues and students have benefited from his wit and wisdom over the years. As a grateful pupil puts it: “He made us learn, but he also made us laugh.” This sums up the humour, patience and support which have characterised Mr Croxton’s career. Many of us remember the numerous additional contributions that he has made to life at Longfield. The Sixth Form Prom, trips to London, staff cricket matches, charity events and even a visit to Disneyland are all examples of his willingness to go above and beyond. Last year, Lee was deservingly presented with the LAT Special Contribution Prize at our annual awards evening. Such is the longevity of Lee’s career that he often realises that he is teaching the offspring of former pupils. There is a rumour that he has even taught a previous student’s grandchild! Lee is looking forward to his new adventure with characteristic enthusiasm. He tells us of energetic plans to travel to far-flung places. Everyone at Longfield and in the Trust wishes Lee every happiness - he thoroughly deserves it.

Uniform Expectations for 2018-2019

At Longfield Academy, we put great importance on standards of uniform as it indicates a level of pride in belonging to our community. Whilst fashions may come and go, there has recently been a considerable fluctuation around the interpretation of the expectations, so we have revised, clarified and outlined expectations for our student uniform. We know that many parents take time over the summer holidays to replace uniform, so it is a timely reminder and support for you as parents to understand what those expectations actually are, rather than being guided by your child. Please take time to read through and understand the Academy’s revised uniform expectations. It is extremely important that your child wears the correct uniform at all times. If any of the following uniform infringements are spotted on entry to the Academy, your child will be asked to correct it immediately. If they can, then they will proceed to lessons, if not, then your child will be isolated with a member of their College Leadership Team until this infringement is corrected. Parents/carers will be notified by your child’s Behaviour Support Mentor. Should the infringement continue for a second day, either the Assistant Head of College or Head of College will contact you to discuss this issue. On the third day, the Principal will contact you as your child would have then spent three days out of normal lessons. We hope you support the Academy in its drive to improve standards of uniform and ensure parity amongst our students. Should a student have a genuine uniform issue, they should bring in a note explaining the nature of the problem and specify a date within which the issue will be rectified. We will allow one full week (7 days) before sanctions will be applied.

What Longfield Academy considers a uniform infringement from Monday 3rd September 2018:

Incorrect footwear - no trainers No blazer Fake nails or coloured nail varnish No tie Branded jumpers Branded belts Jeans style trousers - for guidance no patch pockets on the back Hoodies Excessive or unnatural looking makeup Unnatural hair colour Inappropriate skirt length - for guidance the bottom of the skirt should be no more than 5 cm above

the top of the knee cap No jewellery except one pair of stud earrings and a wristwatch - no Apple Watches allowed No school equipment including stationary and PE kit

For students in year 7 and year 8, they will be expected to bring a suitable bag, ideally a rucksack to the Academy. This will be used to store their equipment but we are also encouraging staff to allow students to bring their work home to show their parents/carers. We want them to be proud of their work and view this as important.

We will send a letter at the end of July and one again at the end of August so the message is very clear.

Speakers for Schools talk with Matthew Bird

On June 6th, media, film and drama students from year 9 and 12 were lucky enough to meet film and television producer Matthew Bird. Matthew has produced a number of films and TV shows, including ‘Fortitude,’ ‘The Musketeers,’ and ‘Death in Paradise.’

He delivered a knowledgeable and thorough talk about the industry (which a number of our students are interested in) and engaged in a lot of discussion. He gave the group of 40 students a really clear indication of the wide variety of jobs available within in the film and television industry. Many of our students went away with their eyes opened to the opportunities that are available to them, as well as how to go about applying for a job industry.

Student Mentors

We have recently recruited and trained a new group of

student mentors to add to our ever growing team at

Longfield Academy. The new year 7 mentors have been

nominated by staff for this role and we are delighted to

have such an enthusiastic group work with.

We will be putting them to work immediately to help with

the year 6 transition visits and taster day. We are

confidence that they will be positive role models not only

for year 6 but also Longfield Academy as a whole.

High Achieving Pupils

On Friday 15th June Canterbury Christchurch

University Outreach Team visited Longfield

Academy. The team spoke with our year 7 and 8

High Achieving Pupils (HAPs) about options

following their GCSE exams and how important

they really are!

Students really enjoyed their visit and we hope

to see them in the future.

Year 11 Visit to Buckmore Park Karting Circuit

On Wednesday 27th June a group of 12 students from year 11

went to Buckmore Park Karting Circuit, spending an hour racing

each other for the winners trophy. The boys loved it, showing their

competitive spirit in amongst some awful driving.

The karting session was their reward for completing a 9 months

long motivational project in the build up to their final GCSE

examinations. All 12 of these boys showed resilience,

determination and a change in attitude in most areas, through

focused 1-2-1 guidance and support sessions with designated

members of staff from their college as well as weekly reflection

sessions. The competitive element helped develop team cohesion

and a desire to improve. Fingers crossed it pays dividends when

the boys receive their results in August!

Please support our school library!

We have started to put together a wish list of books we would love to add to our shelves to support our students learning. It

would be lovely if you could support us and make a purchase from our list.

Would your company or business be able to support us?

If you know your child has lost or damaged a book, you can purchase a replacement book (not necessarily the same

book) from the list. This will help us a great deal in providing a good selection and quantity of books for loan.

Year 7 Cricket Win

Our year 7 students took part in their first ever mixed pairs cricket match against the Leigh Academy on Tuesday 13th June. It was an extremely close fought game where Longfield Academy came out on top and won by 10 runs. Students from both schools have enjoyed the fixture that much that we have penciled in a return leg at Longfield Academy in the coming weeks.

Volleyball

On Friday 6th July, Longfield Academy attended the Kent School Games beach volleyball tournament at Margate beach. We entered 2 teams of under 15s boys and girls. The event was superbly run by Kent School Games and we got to compete in mini leagues against a variety of other schools in Kent. The girls team played 8 games, won 2, drew 2 and lost 4 in their first ever volleyball event. The boys finished in 4th place overall winning 3 of their games and narrowly losing in the semi final 13-12. Credit here needs to go to the students for attending this event when we had an INSET day at school and the rest of the students weren't in. This shows the level of passion our students have for sport here at Longfield Academy.

Milestone Sports Day

This year Milestone Academy asked for our support in running

their sports day. We took 12 students along on the day who

are part of our GCSE PE classes.

They were involved in leading activities, demonstrating correct

techniques and encouraging students to take part in the

events. This was a well run event by Milestone and we look

forward to supporting them in the future.

District Athletics

On Thursday 5th July students from Longfield attended the district athletics at Dartford Harriers track in central park. This is a large event with 17 schools from the district bringing their best athletes to compete across a range of track and field events. It is split into a boys and girls competition with the scores from each year group combined. As always the Longfield students gave a good account of themselves, with the following students being crowned as district champions in their events: Blaise Watts - 200m Calista Boulton - 200m Bethany Panton - 800m and 1500m Overall the boys finished in 9th place and the girls finished in 5th place. Well done to all that competed.

Year 8 Boys Cricket

The year 8s on 25th June played in a super 8s cricket match against Northfleet for boys. Super 8s cricket is an adapted version of the game where players bat in pairs and each pair bats for 4 overs. After 4 overs the batters are changed, this continues until the 16 overs have been completed. For all of the boys that represented Longfield this was the first time they had played in a competitive cricket match. Our boys batted first and scored a respectable 71 runs against a very strong side. After 16 overs NTC got their chance to bat and quickly showed their experience and scored 72 runs with 4 overs to spare.

Trust Sports Day Monday 9th July was the annual Leigh Academies Trust Sports Day. This event again taking place at the Dartford Harriers track, sees all of the schools from the Trust competing in a variety of track and field events. This was another very successful day for the Academy with many of our students winning their events. As a whole school we finished in 5th place overall. At the end of the event each Trust school has to nominate an outstanding male and female athlete, those awards went to the following students: Outstanding male athlete - Jayden Boulton Outstanding female athlete - Bethany Panton

Sports Day 2018

Congratulations goes to Anderson college for

winning this years sports day and also their first ever

win! A huge thanks goes to all staff and students

involved, it was a very competitive enjoyable day.

The Telescope Bistro

The Telescope is a unique dining experience within Longfield Academy. Post 16 students have the opportunity to study a vocational pathway which can see them leaving school with level 1,2 and 3 qualifications in cookery verified by City and Guilds and recognised throughout the catering industry.

To achieve this qualification we operate a professional restaurant on Thursdays and Fridays, term time. Dishes on the menu this term have included ‘paupiette of sole’, ‘griddled steak’, and afternoon tea to celebrate the great british summer!

We accommodate both small and large parties catering for all dietary needs and can even work with you to produce a bespoke menu if required for parties over 15.

To enquire further about the facility or to book please

contact [email protected] or

alternatively call 01474 700 700 ext 600.

Presentations to Volunteers at the Annual Parish Meeting 2018 In the July newsletter for Horton Kirby and South Darenth Parish Council we noticed some of our students had been involved in volunteer work for their community. The following students had been awarded chocolates and certificates for their hard work constructing and fabricating a bench. George King, Alfie Jenner, Taylor Orsmond, Ronnie Sparrowe, Alfie Nicholls and John Friend should be extremely proud of their final product.

Community Coffee Afternoon A few students from various year groups were very excited to be invited to help out at a community coffee afternoon (held for older members of the community) at All Saints Church Centre in Hartley on the 6th July 2018. The students gave up their own time on their day off school to help with the tea, coffee and cakes. They enjoyed chatting with the residents and hearing about their experiences as well as helping with refreshments and tidying up. It was a very successful afternoon and helped to build relationships between the young people and the community. This is part of an ongoing link between the school and the community with more projects to come in the future.

Transition Events Here at Longfield Academy we see the importance of a strong transition between year 6 and 7. From the start of the students receiving their letters of welcome to Longfield Academy we open up our lines of communication and offer support to both students and families during the process. We have our new intake evening, transition plus groups, additional visits, moving on and growing up support for parents / carers and then our taster days. Throughout all of these events we are able to pass on valuable information about the Academy to students and families to ease the pressures and stresses of the transition period. We have enjoyed spending time with our new intake and we look forward to welcoming them into the Academy on the first day of term. We are also very pleased with parents positive comments regarding the transition events: "As new parents about to begin our journey with you we wanted to thank you for your very reassuring transition package. The two meetings we attended, and the day our son spent with you have left us all feeling less nervous and very positive. This was our first choice school because of your reputation and having attended all of the events you have offered we know that we made the right decision." Mrs S, parent of a year 6 into 7 pupil.

Sunflower Competition All term students and staff have been supporting the ‘Don't be so Ridiculous Campaign’ in aid of The Melanoma fund. The whole purpose is to promote safety in the sun, protecting yourself and always wearing sunscreen. The Spectrum Centre has been selling sunflower seeds to students and staff who have planted them outside in a bid to win the tallest sunflower grown. Due to the wonderful sunny weather we have been enjoying, all sunflowers have now reached adult height and they are ready to bloom. In total £54.00 has been raised and sent on to the Melanoma Fund and winners will be announced next term. Thank you everyone in the school who has supported this.

Year 8 Engineering Trip to Delphi Technologies The engineering trip was remarkable. My interpretation of what an engineer was had been someone who fixed vehicles. I can assure you that’s not the case. During the trip I developed my understanding of the roles engineers can do. The technology used was impressive. Not only can men be engineers, so can females! The technical processes (for example in making diesel gas cleaner) are astonishing. We don’t appreciate the difference engineers make to the world until we see how it starts. Engineers can design and create ideas as well as making them come to life. The trip was brilliant. Yasmin Court - 8M

Science Club and Astrodome In Science we have recently done a lot of really exciting stuff. I really enjoyed attending The Astrodome and Science Club. They were both extremely cool and fun. In the Astrodome we watched a video about life in our solar system, it was in 3D and projected all around us. Whilst we were watching we could look all around and it made you feel like you were in space. It gave me a good insight into other planets in our solar system and what they might be like. In Science Club we learnt all sorts of things as well as doing fun activities like dissecting a heart. It was really amazing and I enjoyed it lots. We caught bugs with a pooter and made paper planes to honour the RAF turning 100. We solved Murder Mysteries with pen, paper and water and made rainbows by mixing acids and alkalis. Overall I have really enjoyed these science activities. Nathan Harbour, 7A

International Women in Engineering Day Longfield Academy celebrated International Women in Engineering Day (a day early on 21st June 2018) by inviting three successful female employees from Connect Plus Services into our school to lead a careers workshop with a targeted group of Longfield females in Year 10 Meeting three women in the area of engineering was a fantastic experience! The session has given me (and many others) a clearer understanding of the field of engineering and it’s something that I would now consider a career in. I was interested to hear Kelly’s story of how she has earned the respect of her colleagues through hard work, lots of research and good communication skills. Engineering is imperative for our society and the array of related areas seem stimulating and exciting. I’m definitely going to do some more research into this field, thanks to the informative, and funny session this morning. The meeting has not only opened my eyes to new possibilities, but it has also given me confidence to go into a predominantly male career, if that’s what I choose to do. Amelia Pires De Miranda

ASD parent coffee afternoon/support group Another successful parent coffee afternoon was held in the Spectrum Centre within Longfield. This is a termly event where parents, staff and students meet to celebrate many successes and achievements. We would like to thank all of our parents for their support especially Alison White for her endless support and donations throughout the last 5 years. We wish her well alongside all of the year 11s that left this year.

On a final note, the SEN deparment want to say a big thank you to Mrs Monks who has been with us for 8 years, we wish her well in her new adventures.

In September we will be welcoming Mrs Jobson who will be taking on this role. Hope you all have a wonderful summer holiday. Mrs J Mulholland Spectrum Centre

Careers Convention 2018

Thursday 12th July saw the third annual Leigh Academies Trust year 10 Careers Convention. Based upon an industry type exhibition, over 900 Trust students from Longfield Academy, The Leigh Academy, Wilmington Academy, The Leigh UTC , Strood Academy and Milestone @ the Leigh Academy had the opportunity to visit almost 60 exhibitors to talk about possible future career, training and educational opportunities. Generously hosted by Longfield Academy, exhibitors filled both the Lecture Theatre and Anderson Plaza. The exhibitors ranged from local and national universities, colleges, training providers, STEM ambassadors and local and national businesses. The Trust was keen that as wide a range of sectors as possible could be represented on the day.

Over the past two terms, year 7 students from Longfield Academy and year 5 pupils from Darenth Community Primary School have worked together on a project called ‘Community Links’. Together they have created fantastic sculptures, paintings and photography inspired by the artist Keith Haring.

Congratulations to Carla Martin and her paintings of her brother which have been selected to be part of the prestigious National Students’ Art Exhibition at the Mall Galleries in London.

Congratulations to Gabrielle Long who has been highly commended for her photographs by the National Students’ Art Exhibition. These beautiful photographs have been inspired by family and youth.

Thank you to all those who attended the Summer Art

Exhibition where a fantastic array of work was on display. It

was lovely to see old and new faces coming to see the work

made by some very talented students from Longfield

Academy, it also featuring some colourful art made in

Community Links workshops with year 5 pupils from

Darenth Community Primary School.
