This is an old, old story which mygrandmother told me when I was alittle girl. When she was a little girlher grandfather had told it to her,and when he was a little peasant boyin Bohemia, his mother had told it tohim. And where she heard it, I don'tknow, but you can see it is an old oldstory, and here it is, the way mygrandmother used to tell it.

GONE IS GONEAND IT IS THE STORY OF A MAN

WHO WANTED TO DO HOUSEWORK

This man, his name was Fritzl—hiswife, her name was Liesi. They had alittle baby, Kinndli by name, and

Page 13: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

Spitz who was a dog. They had one cow, two goats, three

pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. That's what they had.

They lived on a patch of land, andthat's where they worked.

Page 14: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof
Page 15: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

Fritzl had to plow the ground, sowthe seeds and hoe the weeds. He hadto cut the hay and rake it too, andstack it up in bunches in the sun.The man worked hard, you see, fromday to day.

Page 16: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

Liesi had the house to clean, thesoup to cook, the butter to churn, the barn yard and the baby to carefor. She, too, worked hard each dayas you can plainly see.

They both worked hard, but Fritzl

Page 17: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

always thought that he worked harder.Evenings when he came home fromthe field, he sat down, mopped hisface with his big red handkerchief, and said: "Hu! How hot it was inthe sun today, and how hard I didwork. Little do you know, Liesi, whata man's work is like, little do youknow! Your work now, 'tis nothingat all."

" Tis none too easy," said Liesi."None too easy!" cried Fritzl. "All

you do is to putter and potter aroundthe house a bit—surely there's nothinghard about such things."

"Nay, if you think so," said Liesi,

Page 18: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

"we'll take it turn and turn abouttomorrow. I will do your work, youcan do mine. I will go out in thefields and cut the hay, you can stayhere at home and putter and potteraround. You wish to try it—yes?"

Fritzl thought he would hike thatwell enough—to lie on the grass and

Page 19: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

keep an eye on his Kinndli-girl, tosit in the cool shade and churn, tofry a bit of sausage and cook a littlesoup. Ho! that would be easy! Yes,yes, he'd try it.

Well, Liesi lost no time the nextmorning. There she was at peep of

Page 20: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

day, striding out across the fieldswith a jug of water in her hand andthe scythe over her shoulder.

And Fritzl, where was he? He wasin the kitchen, frying a string of juicysausages for his breakfast. There hesat, holding the pan over the fire,

Page 21: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

and as the sausage was sizzling andfrizzling in the pan, Fritzl was lostin pleasant thoughts.

"A mug of cider now," that's whathe was thinking. "A mug of applecider with my sausage—that wouldbe just the thing."

No sooner thought than done.Fritzl set the pan on the edge of

the fire place, and went down intothe cellar where there was a big barrelfull of cider. He pulled the bung from

Page 22: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

the barrel and watched the cider spurtinto his mug, sparkling and foamingso that it was a joy to see.

Page 23: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

But Hullal What was that noiseup in the kitchen—such a scuffle andclatter! Could it be that Spitz-dogafter the sausages? Yes, that's whatit was, and when Fritzl reached thetop of the stairs, there he was, thatdog, dashing out of the kitchen doorwith the string of juicy sausages fly-ing after him.

Page 24: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

Fritzl made for him, crying," Hulla!Hullal Hey, hi, ho, hulla!" But the

Page 25: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

dog wouldn't stop. Fritzl ran, Spitzran too. Fritzl ran fast, Spitz ranfaster, and the end of it was thatthe dog got away and our Fritzl hadto give up the chase.

Page 26: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

"Na, na! What's gone is gone,"said Fritzl, shrugging his shoulders. And so he turned back, puffing andpanting, and mopping his face withhis big red handkerchief.

Page 27: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

But the cider, now! Had he putthe bung back in the barrel? No,that he hadn't, for here he was stillholding the bung in bis fist.

With big fast steps Fritzl hurriedhome, but it was too late, for look!

Page 28: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

the cider had filled the mug and hadrun all over the cellar besides.

Fritzl looked at the cellar full ofcider. Then he scratched his headand said, "Na, na! What's gone isgone."

Page 29: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

Well, now it was high time tochurn the butter. Fritzl filled thechurn with good rich cream, took itunder a tree and began to churn withall his might. His little Kinndli wasout there too, playing Moo-cow amongthe daisies. The sky was blue, thesun right gay and golden, and theflowers, they were like angels' eyesbunking in the grass.

"This is pleasant now," thoughtFritzl, as he churned away. "At lastI can rest my weary legs. But wait! What about the cow? I've forgotten

Page 30: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

all about her and she hasn't had adrop of water all morning, poor thing."

Page 31: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

With big fast steps Fritzl ran tothe barn, carrying a bucket of coolfresh water for the cow. And hightime it was, I can tell you, for thepoor creature's tongue was hangingout of her mouth with the long thirst

Page 32: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

that was in her. She was hungrytoo, as a man could well see by thelooks of her, so Fritzl took her fromthe barn and started off with her tothe green grassy meadow.

But wait! There was that Kinndli

Page 33: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

to think of—she would surely getinto trouble if he went out to themeadow. No, better not take thecow to the meadow at all. Betterkeep her nearby on the roof. The roof?Yes, the roof! Fritzl's house was notcovered with shingles or tin or tile—it was covered with moss and sod,and a fine crop of grass and flowersgrew there.

To take the cow up on the roofwas not so hard as you might think, either. Fritzl's house was built into

Page 34: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

the side of a hill. Up the little hill, over a little shed, and from there tothe green grassy roof. That was allthere was to do and it was soon done.

Page 35: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

The cow liked it right well up thereon the roof and was soon munchingaway with a will, so Fritzl hurriedback to his churning.

Page 36: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

But Hulla! Hui! What did he seethere under the tree? Kinndli wasclimbing up on the churn—the chumwas tipping!

Page 37: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

spilling!

falling!and now, there on the grass lay

Page 38: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

Kinndli, all covered with half-churnedcream and butter.

"So that's the end of our butter,"said Fritzl, and blinked and blinkedhis blue eyes. Then he shrugged hisshoulders and said, "Na, nal What'sgone is gone."

He picked up his dripping Kinndliand set her in the sun to dry. Butthe sun, now! It had climbed highup into the heavens. Noontime itwas, no dinner made, and Liesi wouldsoon be home for a bite to eat.

Page 39: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

With big fast steps Fritzl hurried offto the garden. He gathered potatoesand onions, carrots and cabbages, beets and beans, turnips, parsley andcelery.

"A little of everything, that willmake a good soup," said Fritzl as hewent back to the house, his arms sofull of vegetables that he could noteven close the garden gate behind him.

Page 41: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

He sat on a bench in the kitchenand began cutting and paring away. How the man did work, and howthe peelings and parings did fly!

But now there was a great noise

Page 42: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

above him. Fritzl jumped to his feet."That cow," he said, "she's sliding

around right much up there on theroof. She might slip off and breakher neck."

Page 43: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

Up on the roof went Fritzl oncemore, this time with loops of heavyrope. Now listen carefully, and Iwill tell you what he did with it.He took one end of the rope andtied it around the cow's middle. Theother end of the rope he droppeddown the chimney and this he pulledthrough the fireplace in the kitchenbelow.

And then? And then he took theend of the rope which was hangingout of the fireplace and tied it aroundhis own middle with a good tightknot. That's what he did.

"Oh yo! Oh ho!" he chuckled.

Page 44: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

"That will keep the cow from fallingoff the roof." And he began to whistleas he went on with his work.

Page 45: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

He heaped some sticks on the fire-place and set a big kettle of waterover it.

"Na, na!" he said. "Things aregoing as they should at last, andwe'll soon have a good big soup!

Page 46: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

Now I'll put the vegetables in thekettle—"

And that he did."And now I'll put in the bacon—"And that he did too."And now I'll light the fire—"

Page 47: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

But that he never did, for justthen, with a bump and a thump, the cow slipped over the edge of theroof after all; and Fritzl—well, hewas whisked up into the chimneyand there he dangled, poor man, andcouldn't get up and couldn't getdown.

Page 48: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof
Page 49: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

Before long, there came Liesi homefrom the fields with the water jugin her hand and the scythe over hershoulder.

But Hullal Hui! What was that

Page 50: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

hanging over the edge of the roof? The cow? Yes, the cow, and half-choked she was, too, with her eyesbulging and her tongue hanging out.

Liesi lost no time. She took herscythe—and ritsch! rotschl—the ropewas cut, and there was the cow wob-bling on her four legs, but alive andwell, heaven be praised!

Page 51: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

Now Liesi saw the garden with itsgate wide open. There were the pigsand the goats and all the geese too. They were full to bursting, but thegarden, alas! was empty.

Page 52: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

Liesi walked on, and now whatdid she see? The churn upturned, and Kinndli there in the sun, stiffand sticky with dried cream and

Page 54: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

butter.Liesi hurried on. There was Spitz-

dog on the grass. He was full ofsausages and looked none too well.

Page 55: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

Liesi looked at the cellar. Therewas the cider all over the floor andhalfway up the stairs besides.

Page 56: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

Liesi looked in the kitchen. Thefloor! It was piled high with peelingsand parings, and littered with dishesand pans.

Page 57: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

At last Liesi saw the fireplace. Hu!Hulla! Hui! What was that in thesoup-kettle? Two arms were waving, two legs were kicking, and a gurgle, bubbly and weak-like, was coming upout of the water.

Page 58: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

"Na, nal What can this mean?"cried Liesi. She did not know (butwe do—yes?) that when she savedthe cow outside, something happenedto Fritzl inside. Yes, yes, as soon asthe cow's rope was cut, Fritzl, poorman, he dropped down the chimneyand crash! splash! fell right into thekettle of soup in the fireplace.

Liesi lost no time. She pulled atthe two arms and tugged at the twolegs—and there, dripping and splut-tering, with a cabbage-leaf in his hair,

Page 60: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

celery in his pocket, and a sprig ofparsley over one ear, was her Fritzl.

Page 61: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

"Na, na, my man!" said Liesi. "Isthat the way you keep house—yes?"

"Oh Liesi, Liesi!" sputtered Fritzl."You're right—that work of yours,'tis none too easy."

"Tis a little hard at first," saidLiesi, "but tomorrow, maybe, you'lldo better."

"Nay, nay!" cried Fritzl. "What'sgone is gone, and so is my houseworkfrom this day on. Please, please, myLiesi—let me go back to my work inthe fields, and never more will I saythat my work is harder than yours."

Page 62: GONE IS GONE - Arvind · PDF fileThey had one cow, two goats, three pigs, and of geese they had a dozen. ... "That cow," he said, "she's sliding around right much up there on the roof

"Well then," said Liesi, "if that'show it is, we surely can live in peaceand happiness for ever and ever."

And that they did.

ABOUT THE BOOK

"When I was a child," says Wanda Gag, "my favoritefunny Marchen was one about a peasant who wanted todo housework. I have never forgotten either the tale itselfor the inimitable way in which it was told to me inGerman. Recently while reading Grimm's Marchen withthe idea of illustrating them, I could hardly wait to comeupon that old peasant fairy tale of my childhood. To mysurprise and disappointment, it was not in Grimm at all.One story did slightly resemble it, but it lacked the mostdramatic incident and had a different central theme. No.doubt this tale exists in some German collections. Theremust be English versions of it too, for by questioningvarious children, I found them to be familiar with it, butonly vaguely so. From this I concluded that it had neverbeen presented to them as it had been to me—that is, in afull-flavored, conversational style and with a sly peasanthumor which has made the tale unforgettable to me. Itwas for this reason that I decided to make a little book ofthe story, consulting no other sources except one—myown memory of how the tale was told to me when I wasa little girl."
