 1 In permanent progress/as of October 25, 2007 The New Barbarians:  A declaration o f poetic disobedience from the New Border (This text was originally written in 2003 as a response to the Invasion of Iraq and the war on terror. My original goal was to map out a new territory in terms of “we” and “them”. It was also my homage to the voices of Pablo Neruda, the Beat Poets, Martin Luther King, Kathie Acker and Chicano writer Oscar Z Acosta AKA “Brown Buffalo.”  An earlier version appeared in my book “Eth no Techno” (Routledge, 2005). This ne w version was re-written in the summer of 2007 and is considerably different from the original). We, "subject matter" of fringe documentariesWe, the Hollywood refusniks,

the greaser bandits & holy outlawsof advanced Capitalism

We, without guns, without BiblesWe, who never pray to the police or to the armyWe, who never kissed the hand of a bishop or a curator We, who barter and exchange favors & talismansWe, who still believe in community, another community,

a much stranger and wider communityWe, community of illness, madness & dissent

community of horny angels & tender demonsWe, frail and defiant; permanently outraged but always tender We shape your desire while you contract our services

to postpone the real discussionWe are waiting, still waiting for you to go to sleep(Shamanic tongues)

I say, we say,We, the artists & intellectuals who still don't wish to complyWe, who talk back in rarefied symbols & metaphors

against the corruption of formalized religion & artWe, critical brain mass

4.-To those up there who make dangerous decisions for mankind I say, we say:We, the homeless, faceless vatos aquellos

in the great American metropolislittle Mexico, little Cambodia, little purgatory

We, the West Bank & Gaza strip of GringolandiaWe, the unemployed, who work so pinche hard

so you don't have to work that muchWe, evicted from your gardens & beachesWe, fingerprinted, imprisoned, under surveillanceWe, within your system, without your mercyWe, w/out health or car insurance,

w/out bank accounts & credit cards,with our mennial jobs & permanent finantial angst

We, whose taxes send your CEOs & armieson vacation to the South

We, scared shitless at ground level,but only at ground levellike a pack of hungry wolves in an empty downtown
