Pinellas County Amateur ChampionshipFinishing off our 50th Anniversary will be our inaugural Pinellas County Amateur Championship, which is set for Nov. 24-25. This event is open to Pinellas County

residents only and will carry an entry fee of $125 per person, which will include all golf fees; range balls, prize purse, tee gift and awards banquet Sunday after play. The

format will be individual stroke play, fl ighted by handicap with net and gross divisions in each fl ight giving all entrants an opportunity to win. Practice rounds for tournament entrants will be available prior to the tournament for a reduced rate. In November 2004, new putting surfaces were unveiled at Fox Hollow. SeaDwarf Seashore Paspalum turfgrass was the choice for several reasons: It can be

irrigated with effl uent, reclaimed or even sea water; it has the ability to deliver fast green speeds (9+ on the Stimpmeter); it requires less fertilizer, pesticide, weed control and irrigation; and overseeding is not necessary in anticipation of cooler weather. That means no more transition periods in the fall and spring.

Let me give you four simple questions to ask your junior golfers (or any golfers for that matter) which will encourage them to think and to observe themselves, and will lead to a more productive practice session or post-round analysis.

Question 1 Does your grip look the way it should This forces the player to look at the grip and you may discover that the junior golfer does not have a clear picture of how the hands should be placed on the club. You may want to take a close-up photo of the player’s hands so they can see their grip. Sometimes this photo will be good motivation to change the hands to a correct grip position.

Question 2Is the clubface on target at address? Once the junior golfer is in the address position the parent can stand next to their front leg and then take hold of the club, keep it very still, and then ask the golfer to let go of the club and walk back on the target line to check the alignment of the clubface. When the golfer goes back on the target line it becomes much easier to recognize a misaligned clubface.

Question 3 Are you square to the clubface at address? When golfers put their focus on the leading edge of the clubface they may notice if they are facing behind or ahead of the ball. You may ask them to hold the club up in front of them with the shaft level with the ground and check to see if the leading edge of the clubface is vertical. This indicates the club-face is square in relation to the golfer.

Question 4 Did you swing the club the way you wanted? The first thing that this question can do is to have the golfer focus on their motion with the club and not on the shot that results.

All of us golfers can get so focused on the ball and the result we want (or don’t want) that we put no atten-tion on the only thing we have control of which is the golf club. Question 4 is also very open-ended and can help junior golfers see where their awareness was on any particular shot. Quite often golfers have no idea what

they did with the swing because they were so involved with trying to force results.

Notice that none of the four questions involve the score that the player shot or where they finished in the tournament. The big thing with all of these questions is that the player sees the situation and the player then can take the responsibility to make the improvement. This is not a parent judging and dictating a change to be made!
