Hello and welcome to Las Vegas! There are so many reasons why you might be

planning a trip to Las Vegas, and if you expect to play a little golf you’ve defi nitely decided on the right place. Our featured golf courses offer some of the most beautiful and challeng-ing play in the Las Vegas area. Check out the newly reopened Stallion Mountain Golf Course, now managed by OB Sports. Also, Angel Park was recently ranked as one of the Top 50 Women Friendly Facilities in the Country. Rhodes Ranch Golf Course, and its sister course Tus-cany Golf Club, have quickly matured into two of the best conditioned and most playable tracks in Las Vegas. The multitude of water features, varying elevations and stun-ning city and mountain views provide a wonderful setting for a day of golf away from it all. If you’re a resident, or thinking about becoming one, check out Tuscany’s website for very attractive resident “deals.” You’ll also fi nd something new in this issue: Weddings! Or should we say “Great Locations” to hold your wedding. Everyone knows about the off-Strip chapels where you can be “hitched” by a guy in a too-tight-fi tting Elvis costume, but if you’re looking for a more secluded and sophisticated location, check out our list of Golf Club banquet facilities for your very special day! Groom Golf? Be sure to contact Revere Golf Club. They have everything you could ask for, and if they don’t – it’s Vegas, for gosh sakes – they can get it for you!

Cheers, Lisa Kunkle-Meyers

Stallion Mountain Golf Club Rides High Again

“It’s great to see Stallion Mountain galloping again,” stated Travelin’ Joe Pass-ov, Travel Editor for GOLF magazine dur-ing a recent video shoot. Residents and visiting golfers agree, as Stallion Mountain Golf Club has re-emerged as a Las Vegas must-play. The club had been closed for nearly three years, but this past summer a Colorado-based ownership group ac-quired the club and hired OB Sports Golf Management to reopen the facility. OB Sports has been operating courses in Las Vegas since 1990, and today also operates other popular area venues, including The Legacy Golf Club, Angel Park Golf Club, Painted Desert Golf Club, Las Vegas Golf

Club and Aliante Golf Club. OB Sports led an ambitious effort to re-launch Stal-lion Mountain, which celebrated its grand re-opening on October 1, 2011.

Stallion Mountain is just six miles from the fabulous Las Vegas Strip, and boasts a 7,351-yard layout designed by former PGA Tour professional Jim Colbert and golf course architect Jeff Brauer. The course has a decorated history in the Las Vegas golf scape as host venue for Golf Channel’s Big Break II, and of the Frank Si-natra Celebrity Classic and the PGA Tour’s Las Vegas event (at the time known as the Las Vegas Invitational). Stallion Mountain’s luxurious, 38,000-square-foot clubhouse

promises to be Las Vegas’ premier special-event venue featuring facilities for wed-dings, banquets, meetings and other spe-cial gatherings. The club’s facilities include a full-service restaurant and grill, as well as fl exible banquet facilities that overlook the golf course and surrounding mountains.

Stallion Mountain Golf Club is open and available for outside resort guest play, groups/tournaments, weddings, banquets and events. Tee times are available and resort rates range from $105 to $160, with twilight rates ranging from just $45 to $75. Lower rates are available for tee times booked online, in advance at the offi cial website, www.stallionmountaingolf.com. The club also offers fl exible double- and triple-play packages with savings for two and three rounds. These packages can be combined with rounds at other participating OB Sports-managed fa-cilities in Las Vegas.

For those look-ing to call Stallion Mountain Golf Club their home course, the fl exible offerings at this semi-private facility include categories of Single, Family, Junior, National and Social memberships. The club is offering some special fi nancing packages that allow you the opportunity to join with zero dollars down, with your initiation fee amortized over your

fi rst 12 months’ dues. Members at Stallion Mountain receive preferential tee-time access, invitations to exclusive member events, guest benefi ts, locker room privi-leges, practice facility privileges, and a full calendar of golf and social events, along with travel benefi ts to play the other OB Sports courses at preferred rates and much more.

Now that Stallion Mountain Golf Club is “galloping again,” you need to make sure you “take a ride” on this excit-ing Las Vegas golf gem.

Since the halcyon days of Bugsy Siegel’s mid-1940’s Las Vegas, marketing gurus have successfully

promoted the fabled Sin City with an extraordinarily large and diverse group of marketing campaigns. Some of these, by turn, include playground for the stars; getaway for the rich and famous; gambling mecca; playground for adults; convention mecca; playground for fami-lies; etc.; etc. The one exception: Despite dozens of top-tier courses concentrated in a relatively compact area, Las Vegas has never successfully positioned itself as a golf destination. Remarkably, only about 40% of golf rounds are booked prior to guest arrival, unequivocally the lowest percentage of any true golf destination in

the U.S., and in many cases less than half of that of resorts such as Myrtle Beach, Pinehurst, Scottsdale, Palm Springs and Hilton Head Island.

Caesars Entertainment intends to reshape that dynamic, and with an array of legendary casino hotels and three of the most renowned courses in the Valley, there’s a very good chance they can pull it off.

The fl agship of Caesars Golf Las Vegas is undoubt-edly Cascata Golf Club, located about 30 minutes from the southern end of the Strip in Boulder City. Billed as “a tranquil oasis ... and quite simply Las Vegas’ ultimate natural golf experi-

Off ering a true parkland golf setting with abundant greenery and water features more often found in Southern Florida than Southern Nevada, Las Vegas National has hosted Tour events, celebrities and athletes from around the world, and the infamous Rat Pack – Dean Martin and Peter Lawford are rumored to have routinely picked the pockets of pals Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop and The Chairman of the Board himself, Frank Sinatra.

ence,” Cascata has, since its opening in 2000, either received or been nominated for every major accolade from every major golf publication or web site on the planet. “Number 1 Golf Facilities in the U.S.” from the 2009 Zagat Survey; “Top Casino Courses in the U.S.” (No. 4), Golfweek 2007; “America’s 100 Greatest Public Courses” (No. 49), Golf Digest 2010; “Best Resort Courses in the U.S. (No. 16), Golf-week 2005. The list goes on and on.

Designed by renowned golf course architect Rees Jones, the par-72, 7,137-yard championship layout features stunning vistas at every turn, including the 3,600-foot peak at Red Mountain, lush fairways, lakes and streams. One of those many streams emanates from a

418-foot waterfall that fl ows down the mountainside, over mammoth boulders, cascading into a river that roars through the clubhouse. (Cascata, after all, is Italian for “waterfall.”)

Although Cascata’s total golf experi-ence begins at its private gates, arrival at the Tuscan-style, 37,000-square-foot clubhouse is where golfers truly begin to realize they’re in for something very special. Offering an Old World ambience of unpretentious luxury, the clubhouse comprises a dining room featuring an ap-petizing menu sure to impress every taste; a Cigar Lounge with an excellent collec-tion of rare and fi ne tobaccos stocked in the custom-designed humidor; a stun-ningly beautiful Golf Shop offering the

very latest in equipment, stylish apparel and accessories; and Men’s and Women’s lounges equipped with every conceivable amenity, including sink-side fl at-screen TVs.

Class A PGA professionals attend to equipment, fashion and instruction needs, and players are accompanied on-course by a mandatory Tour-class caddie. The cost is $75 per set and includes two sleeves of balls or one sleeve of premium balls; advanced reservations are recom-mended.

Cascata Golf Course is the ultimate in privacy, luxury and uncompromising service. From the moment you arrive to the moment you depart the accommodat-ing staff is there to ensure you have an unforgettable day. Few places on Earth of-fer such extravagance. The air is pure, the silence nearly deafening. It’s no wonder Sports Illustrated called Cascata “golf’s hid-den treasure.”

If Cascata was “woven” among the foothills, then Rio Secco – the second jewel in the Caesars Golf Las Vegas

triple crown and another renowned Rees Jones design – was carved (chiseled, actually) from the canyons, gorges and arroyos that surround it. Located in the foothills of the Black Mountain Range in Henderson, just over 13 miles southeast of the Strip, Rio Secco plays to more than 7,400 yards and can be exceptionally challenging for even the best golfers.

Design features at Rio Secco include

The 566-yard, par-5 eighth hole at Rio Secco, with the Las Vegas Strip looming in the background, culminates at the well-protected green, with strategic bunkering front and right and virtually no bail-out areas for errant approach shots.

six holes twisting and turning through steep canyons, six on a plateau overlook-ing the Strip, and six holes set in a broad desert wash. Extremely popular for group business, including corporate and associa-tion outings, PGA Section and private-club tournaments, and local and league play, Rio Secco is now host to the Wendy’s 3-Tour Challenge, as well as the Western Athletic Conference Golf Championship, an event that brings some of the best college golfers West of the Mississippi to Las Vegas.

The 30,000-square-foot European-themed Rio Secco Clubhouse is tastefully understated in its decor, featuring dark woods and natural stone throughout. Overlooking the seventh, eighth and ninth holes – with multi-million-dollar estates on the adjacent cliffs – clubhouse facilities include a private locker room and club-room for VIP guests; a 2,000-square-foot Golf Shop offering the latest in name-brand golf apparel and equip-ment; and Janelas Restaurant & Bar, one of the fi nest golf course dining experi-ences in Las Vegas.

Rio Secco is home to the Butch Harmon School of Golf (see sidebar page 11), and offers the world-famous “T-Mate” Program. Golf guests have the option of reserving a T-Mate, who serves as golf concierge and hostess during the round. T-Mates’ caddie skills have been tested through an intensive training program, and tee to green match up with any traditional caddie program anywhere. T-Mates are outgoing, physically fi t, reli-able, attractive and, above all, supportive. They’ll register their assigned guests in Golf Shop, assist with Golf Shop purchas-es, keep the score, replace divots and fi x ball marks, move the carts as required to maintain a near-perfect pace of play, and provide expert information on the course and help direct strategic play.

While a couple of eights rarely wins at the poker table-- without, say, a pair of Aces to back it up -- in Las Vegas golf, 8 is all you need to come out on top. Caesars Entertainment offers 8 legendary hotels to complement its golf offerings, including the fabled Caesars Palace; the ultra-luxurious Paris; the Rio All-Suites Hotel & Casino just off the Strip; the ultra-modern Planet Hollywood; Strip mainstays Bally’s, Fla-mingo and Harrah’s; and the value-priced Imperial Palace. An impressive and diverse array of accommodations, to say the least.

But 8 is also the number of golfers that moves “the game” to a different table. “A group of eight or more golfers allows us to offer a Golf Group room rate at our fi ne Caesars hotels,” says V.P. of Golf Operations Eric Dutt. “We can also work with you on arranging ground transportation, pre-ar-ranged meals at the golf courses, advanced reservations for rental clubs and T-Mates at Rio Secco.”

So gather up your golf group, brush the dust off your clubs and call Jay Childers at 702-290-0510 or [email protected] for Golf Group reserva-tions. Play your 8s, and leave your Aces up your sleeve.

lenge; fi ve intriguing par-3s offer a stern test to even the best golfers; while four mid-length par-5s offer a good chance at birdie. Greens are typically smallish, and are usually fl anked by strategically located bunkers. While affording a relax-ing and pleasurable round for high-handicappers, The National is certainly no pushover.

The National has a long and storied history in the Las Vegas Valley. Just after completion in 1961, the course, then called Stardust Country Club, hosted its fi rst professional golf event, the LPGA Championship. The layout, designed by Bert Stamps, has subsequently hosted the Tournament of Champions, the Sahara Invitational, and, from 1993 to 1996, the Las Vegas Invitational. Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino, Lanny Wadkins, Al Geiberger, Davis Love III and Jim Furyk have all hoisted the winner’s trophy. Tiger Woods won the event in 1996, his fi rst-ever win on the PGA Tour.

But it was during the 1960s that The National hosted its most revered golfers: The Rat Pack frequently played golf, then

spent time carousing in the bar around the piano, entertaining guests with songs and stories. Although all of the Rat Packers were good players in their own right, it was widely known that Dean Martin and Peter Lawford were the ones to beat. Locals tell great stories about late night matches under the glow of the driving range lights.

Over the years The National has become a truly unique and historic site. Come play The National, and start mak-ing a little history of your own. For more information or for tee time reservations call (888) 584-6531.

At just under 400 yards from the back tees, the par-4 fourth at Rio Secco would be a relatively simple exercise, were it not for the deep pot bunkering surrounding the tiered green, where three putts (or more) are not uncommon.

Golf where the air is pure, the silence nearly deafening. It’s no wonder Sports Illustrated called Cascata “golf ’s hidden treasure.”

ARees Jones design, Rio Secco is a challenging 18-hole layout built to test even the best players’ skills, and awestruck all comers with astounding

beauty throughout. Panoramic views of the Las Vegas city-scape and the gorgeous estates that sit high atop several of the holes at Rio Secco will provide a welcome distraction when the ball isn’t dropping. Opened in 1997, Rio Secco immediately drew na-tional attention and grabbed its share of national awards from Golf Digest and Golfweek. Rio Secco has been a popu-lar choice for both competitive tournament and group outing organizers. Tournaments and events held at Rio Secco include the Western Athletic Conference Men’s Golf Championships, Tiger Woods’ Tiger Jam, and the nation-ally televised Wendy’s 3-Tour Challenge. The course record is 64 shared by PGA Tour stars Tiger Woods and Nick Watney among others. Rio Secco is one of two golf properties in Las Vegas (Cascata) that is owned and operated by Caesars Enter-tainment, Inc., and is home to the Butch Harmon School of Golf.

There are more than 50 golf courses in the Las Vegas area, but only one has the distinction of being ranked tops in the nation: Zagat Survey rated Cas-

cata as No. 1 golf facility in the United States (2008). In a city famous for its high rise hotels and casinos, Cascata is the tranquil respite for vacationers and avid golfers alike. Set high above the desert basin, Cascata is located only 30 minutes from The Strip, but truly seems a world away. From impeccable course conditions, superb customer service, and a tour caliber forecaddie, Cascata is the ultimate. The 37,000 sq ft Tuscan styled clubhouse offers a full service restaurant and golf shop, and award-winning locker rooms with full shower amenities. And yes, there is a brook that traverses through the clubhouse atrium origi-nating from a 400-ft waterfall towering above the practice range and meandering throughout the practice facilities. Golf Digest honors Las Vegas mainstay as Top 50 Course for Women for second consecutive year.

For the second consecutive year, Angel Park Golf Club, a 36-hole facility located in the Summerlin area of Las Vegas, was recognized as one of “America’s Top 50 Courses for Women” by Golf Di-gest magazine. Golf clubs that make the list feature “a female-friendly design, amenities, courteous staff, programs and an atmosphere that appeals to women.” The editors rely on a panel of more than 100 of its female golf course raters who fan out across the country to nominate and evaluate the multitude of daily-fee and resort courses based on, “…how well they meet the women-friendly criteria established by the editors. Among them at least one set of tees less than 5,300 yards, at least two sets of tees with USGA slope and course ratings for women, minimal forced carries from the forward tees, and run-up areas to most or all greens.”

“As a golf professional, obviously I’m personally attached to the game to the point that it’s not only my profession, it’s my passion,” said Greg Brockelman, Director of Golf at Angel Park. “In my estimation, golf is a great game suitable for just about anyone. The fact that female participation has traditionally lagged behind amounts to squandered oppor-tunities for generations of girls to enjoy

one of the greatest games ever devised. Fortunately, demographic data show that female participation is growing fast. This is an encouraging trend that we support in many ways here at Angel Park, with the goal of narrowing the participation gap between men and women.”

Angel Park’s Mountain Course and Palm Course were both designed by Arnold Palmer. The club also features a 12-hole Cloud Nine Short Course, the World’s Original natural grass putting course, and an expansive practice tee – all of which are lighted for evening enjoyment.

Both golf courses at Angel Park recently underwent a renovation resulting in a new desert-golf design. If you haven’t played Angel Park lately, come check out

our new look. Inspired by the striking views of the nearby Red Rock Mountains, the Mountain Course unfolds through rolling terrain and native high-desert vegetation. The Palm Course is well known for its diverse combination of memo-rable golf holes that challenge golfers with differing yardages and intriguing hazards, placing a premium on club selection and creative shot-making.
