Greetings from the Central Indiana Golfer’s Guide! Thank you for choosing the #1 Golf Guide for the heart of the Hoosier state.

Central Indiana offers a wide variety of golf courses, and we hope to connect you to a few new tracks this year.

Our cover feature for the Spring/Summer issue is Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel, Ind., consistently ranked one of the top public golf courses in the state. With 18 championship holes, a full-service restaurant, a fully stocked Golf Shop and a state-of-the-art Golf Academy, Prairie View easily stands out above the rest. Full golf memberships are available at Prairie View, which also has become one of the premier destinations for weddings, special events and golf outings in Hamilton County. Make sure Prairie View Golf Club is on your “must-play” list for the 2012 season. You won’t be disappointed.

Carmel also is the home of the 2012 BMW Championship, which will take place September 3-9 and will be hosted by Crooked Stick Golf Club. This is a great opportunity to see how the best golfers in the world play this great game, up close and personal. For more information and to purchase tickets, visit www.BMWChampionshipUSA.com.

With the majority of the season in front of us, there is plenty of time to plan a golf getaway in the Midwest. But where do you go? Golfer’s Guide has you covered with options in our Perfect Drive section, which starts on page 35 of this issue. Destinations within a 5-hour drive are highlighted, and more information on packages may be found at Indiana.golfersguide.com.

And remember, if you’d like to save some money on golf—And who doesn’t?—be sure to visit www.TeeTimeSavings.com and save up to 50% on the courses you really want to play. Or you can visit Indiana.golfersguide.com and print coupons from participating area courses. Either way, when you save more, you can play more!

Widely recognized as one of the state’s premier daily-fee layouts, Prairie View is a 7,073-yard classic design, characterized by abundant natural beau-ty. Golfers will be treated to views of towering sycamores and oaks and the sounds of clear running streams and billowing native grasses that transform an afternoon on the course into an almost surreal experience.

“Prairie View offers a tremendous balance of beauty blended with fair-ness,” said Head Golf Professional Ryan Straight. “The golf course is chal-lenging, yet fun for all skill levels. It takes advantage of natural terrain to offer wonderful rolling prairie holes, as well as mature trees, wetlands and subtle elevation changes. Throughout the entire round you will be taken back to a time when covered wagons took families across the plains in search of new and exciting adventures. This wonderful layout is sure to take you on an 18-hole adventure you won’t soon forget.”

An 18-hole AdventureYou Won’t Soon Forget

As the only Robert Trent Jones, Jr.-designed golf course in the state of Indiana, Carmel’s Prairie View Golf Club is already in elite company. But in addition to its 18-hole championship

golf course—set upon 206 acres of rolling prairies and serene wetlands, undisturbed by residential development—Prairie View’s commitment to “constructing” players sound in all aspects of the game solidifi es the facility’s standing as one of the most complete and dynamic in the Midwest.

Dedicated employees of Prairie View are in abundance, whether it’s their bag and cart attendants, starters or player services staff, PGA Profes-sional Golf Shop and Golf Academy staff, dining and lounge employees, or the grounds crew, all with one goal in mind: to make your day at Prairie View one to remember. You’ll soon fi nd out why Golfweek maga-zine regards Prairie View as the best golf course in Indianapolis.

The superintendent and his dedi-cated team keep the golf course in

pristine condition year-round, while a staff of certifi ed professionals at the Prairie View Golf Training Academy strives to do the same with golfers, even during the depths of winter. Today, maxi-mizing your potential as a player requires a convergence of ability, preparation, fi tness, technological

savvy and an intimate knowledge of the golf swing. At Prairie View’s re-nowned Training Academy, instruc-tion is based on an all-encompass-ing, holistic approach to the game of golf.

“The Training Academy of-fers six heated bays so that you can practice and fi ne tune your game 12 months a year,” said Straight. “We

have the luxury of having four PGA Golf Professionals on staff to provide the very best instruction, assisted by state-of-the-art, one-on-one teaching software and the TrackMan launch monitor.” TrackMan measures attack angle, along with other variables, to optimize the club fi tting process and best match clubs to an individual’s swing. (A properly fi tted driver can add as much as 30 yards to your tee shot.) TrackMan also helps the client determine how far they hit each club in their bag, which can lower scores dramatically.

“By using these tools we can pin-point exactly when and where your swing breaks down and how to fi x it,” said Straight. “It’s pretty excit-ing to have a facility like this and qualifi ed professionals to be able to work on every aspect of your golf game. We can improve everything from your equipment to your technique and give you the knowledge and the confi dence to unlock your golf swing.” Just one more example of the attention to detail that makes Prairie

A tranquil state park setting is what sets apart The Fort Golf Resort. The Fort’s 238-acre layout is encompassed in what is now Indiana’s

Fort Harrison State Park. Its 7,148-yard layout pro-vides both beauty and challenge to every golfer.

Legendary designer Pete Dye has left his mark on an already beautiful golf course. His less-is-more style is evident in the natural elevation changes. Another Dye trademark shows up on every hole at The Fort. The greens are some of the truest rolling in Indiana and, even during warm Indiana summers, hold iron shots well.

The Fort Golf Resort and Conference Center of-fers top quality practice facilities, private or group golf instruction, a fully-stocked golf shop, men’s and women’s locker rooms, golf packages with lodging and corporate or charity golf outing capabilities.

Golf.com recently listed The Fort as the No. 1 public-access course in the state of Indiana.

Located just north of Indianapolis in Noblesville, Pur-gatory Golf Club is one layout that more than lives up to its name.

With no less than six tees on each hole, Purgatory invites players of all skill levels and presents plenty of challenges for all of them. This little slice of heaven is well known throughout the state for its bunkering and the visual effect it creates on each hole. Described by Golf Digest as “more heaven than hell,” the layout features more than 125 strategically-placed bunkers throughout the course with each one prepared to catch your ball. Bentgrass is used to outline the course from tee to green with tall fescue grasses offering a challenge to any wayward shot. Signifi cant mounding throughout the course provides further character and challenge to Purgatory. The layout has received multiple awards and has been recognized as one of America’s Top 100 public courses. Golf-week magazine recently selected Purgatory as the top public course in the state. The Golf Club of Indiana is a golf club, period. What that means is they concentrate on providing you with the fi nest facilities for your golf expericene. The clubhouse is set on historic property

in an elegant, vintage 1870 home. Inside, you will fi nd complete men’s and women’s locker facilities and a pro shop that features a vast selection of golf merchandise from all the sport’s leading manufactur-ers. In fact, the pro shop has been named among Golf Digest’s 100 Best Pro Shops. The Golf Club of Indiana is worthy of the attention it has received. With its gently rolling terrain, large undulating greens and many mature trees, The Golf Club of Indiana is a beautiful place to play. Water on 15 holes, 72 bunkers (same as par) and championship tees of more than 7,000 yards make the course as challenging as it is appealing. There are many places you can play golf, but precious few that offer the experience that only an excellent day of golf can provide. The Golf Club of Indiana is one of those few places. They invite you to come experience it for yourself. The Brian Kirk Golf School is one of the leading golf schools in the Midwest, offering year-round instruction, junior golf development and corporate golf experiences. Whatever your golf objectives may be, let their instructors, with more than 40 years of experience, help you achieve your goals.

Since Rees Jones, dubbed the “Open Doctor” for his many makeovers of courses in advance of the U.S. Open, added the nine-hole East Course to complement the 18

holes previously constructed by his father Robert Trent Jones in 1964, public-access golf courses in Indiana have been fi ght-ing an uphill battle to keep up with the Joneses. Featuring 27 holes designed by two of the most acclaimed names in the history of golf course architecture, Columbus’ Otter Creek Golf Course has been ranked among the very best daily-fee layouts in the state of Indiana since it opened nearly a half-century ago. The well-manicured landscapes constructed by the father-son team gently intertwine with the natural con-tours found in this part of Southern Indiana. Utilizing the existing aspects of the land to assure each shot is a natural challenge, the Jones’ have distinguished Otter Creek as a championship golf course unique to all others. Today, golfers can create an 18-hole round by combining two of the three (East, West, North) nine-hole layouts. Even with scads of large, mature trees scattered throughout the property, Otter Creek is relatively wide open and water only comes into play on four of the 27 holes. A beautiful setting and tremendous facilities make Otter Creek a must for your next round or golf outing.

Dye championship golf. Discover the essence of “pure” golf as you play through the beauty of a natural parkland setting that incorporates numerous nature areas, wetlands, animal habitats and rolling terrain.

The Pines course will appeal to golfers of all skill levels as it mixes a long and diffi cult front nine with a more player-friendly back nine. The scenic and challeng-ing Sycamore course will defi nitely test every shot in your bag. It blends a mixture of hilly terrain, tree-lined fairways and water holes with a more traditional links-style fl avor that adds exciting variety to this championship layout. Central Indiana’s only Gary Player designed 18-hole championship course, Southern Dunes is a scenic par-70 American Links style course that features

more than 12 lakes, strategic mounding and six par-3s that will challenge best mid- to long-iron players.

With fi ve sets of tees, the course is ideal both for low handicappers and top amateurs; but beware Southern Dunes plays longer the card indicates from any of the tees, making it anything but a “pitch and putt” layout.

What really sets Southern Dunes apart in Central In-diana is its practice facility that offers golfers both indoor and outdoor options. Outdoor, the practice area has been completely grassed in and features heated hitting bays. In-doors, you’ll fi nd three golf simulators and putting green.

For those really committed to improving the mid-range and short game, Southern Dunes boasts a 9-hole par-3 course that stretches to more than 1,500 yards. An unlimited annual practice pass is available for only $325 and includes all the practice amenities, including the par-3 course. For more information regarding Southern Dunes visit www.southerndunesgolfcourse.com or call 317 865-1800.

Inspired by Indiana native and two-time major cham-pion Fuzzy Zoeller, Edinburgh’s Timbergate Golf Course opened in 1999 and 10 years later the layout

remains as one of the premier public-access facilities in the state of Indiana. The course was constructed on a sandy and almost treeless site by Clyde Johnston Designs, Inc., creating a links-style feel with a Scottish fl air. Timbergate was built to be both challenging to expe-rienced players as well as playable to high handicappers. The 6,965-yard par-72 course features at least fi ve sets of Bent grass tees on every hole. Eleven ponds and several bunkers skirt the Bent grass fairways and greens. Blue-grass and fescue roughs surround every hole giving each its own identity. Timbergate is a public golf course owned and oper-ated by the Town of Edinburgh, Indiana. The course can be easily reached from Interstate 65 about 25 miles south of Indianapolis, exit 80, State Road 252.
