As host venue of The 2010 Ryder

Cup, the golfing facilities at Celtic

Manor are exceptional. As well as

three championship golf courses, two

luxurious clubhouses and a world-

class Golf Academy, the Resort boasts

a five-star Resort Hotel, 19th century

Manor House, 200-year-old country

inn, state-of-the-art convention

centre, two health clubs and spas,

and no fewer than six restaurants.

“It’s clear there’s nothing like Welsh hospitality.”

Jim Remy, President of the PGA of America

More than ten years in the making,

The Ryder Cup proved worth the wait

when it was played in Wales for the

first time at The Celtic Manor Resort in

2010.

Europe regained the coveted gold

trophy from the Americans in the

most dramatic style as an extended

four days of competition boiled down

to the very last singles match in which

Graeme McDowell beat Hunter Mahan

on the 17th green.

The challenges of the weather – and the

magnificent response of a 110-strong

team of greenkeepers to overcome them

– only added to the drama and Celtic

Manor enjoyed its day in the sun on

Monty’s Magic Monday.

“It’s a wonderful venue and the golf course is magnificent.”

Built at a total cost of £20 million,

The Twenty Ten Course is the first

golf course in history to be designed

specifically for The Ryder Cup, golf’s

most prestigious team tournament.

Also the stage for the annual ISPS

Handa Wales Open, this course

opened in 2007 and has since made

its mark as a must-play venue for

any golfer.

Set against the magnificent backdrop of

the beautiful Usk Valley, the spectacular

7,493-yard, par-71 course includes many

memorable risk and reward challenges,

designed to provide a supreme test to the

world’s best golfers in both match play

and stroke play conditions.

No fewer than six holes on the back nine

feature water hazards and the 14th, with

its twin lakes, the drivable par-four 15th

and the reachable par-five 18th stand out

in an epic closing stretch.

T H E T W E N T Y T E N

“I think it’s a wonderful golf course. It’s in terrific shape and the holes themselves have a lot of risk/reward, a lot of real big penalties if you miss-hit a shot and a lot of rewards if you pull off a shot.”

Eight-time US Ryder Cup player Phil Mickelson

The Twenty Ten Course is

complemented by a luxurious

clubhouse, built to take full advantage

of its elevated position overlooking

the 18th green. A long balcony offers

spectacular views over the dramatic

finishing hole of the course.

Features within the clubhouse include

a members’ lounge with leather

chesterfields and a warming open

hearth, award-winning Rafters Bar

and Restaurant with its floor-to-ceiling

cedar beams, the Samuel Ryder

Suite, a spike bar, pro shop and the

luxurious, oak-panelled locker rooms

used by some of the greatest names

in golf during The 2010 Ryder Cup.

Roman Road hosted The Celtic Manor

Wales Open, a leading event on the

European Tour, from 2005 to 2007.

It was also the venue for the All*Star

Cup, a Ryder Cup style celebrity

tournament, which featured the likes

of Catherine Zeta-Jones, Michael

Douglas, Rob Lowe, Jane Seymour

and Alice Cooper.

Designed by Robert Trent

Jones Senior, the Roman Road

championship course takes its

name from the ancient East to West

highway of Roman Britain crossing

its fairways to the nearby Roman

fortress town of Caerleon.

Bordered by woodland, this

challenging par-70 course features

some long open fairways but also a

number of twists and turns through

trees and across lakes and streams.

“The Roman Road has some lovely holes and panoramic views across the Severn Estuary to complete one of Britain’s premier golf resorts.”

Designed by the winning 2010

European Ryder Cup captain, Colin

Montgomerie called on all his golfing

experience to create many exciting

tests of strategy. He has also drawn

on his roots in Scottish links golf to

create a traditional feel enhanced by

deep and penal pot bunkers.

The Montgomerie offers a spectacular

par-69 challenge with some

dramatic tee shots over valleys and

breathtaking downhill approaches.

Featuring just one water hazard, The

Montgomerie nevertheless poses a

formidable examination of course

strategy for accomplished players

while remaining a highly enjoyable

challenge for all.

Complemented by some stunning

views over the Usk Valley and the

Severn Estuary, the undulating course

provides a truly memorable golfing

experience.

“A bunker should be a half-shot penalty, so I’ve made the bunkers smaller and very much deeper than you will see on most new layouts. I believe you should have to plot your way around them like a game of chess.”

Course designer and 2010 Ryder Cup Captain, Colin Montgomerie

The Resort’s largest clubhouse,

serving both Roman Road and The

Montgomerie courses, is a relaxed

retreat just a couple of fairways from

the Resort Hotel.

With its luxurious locker rooms,

lounge bar, brasserie restaurant, golf

pro shop, award-winning health club

and Ocius Treatment Rooms which

offer the finest Elemis therapies, it

is a popular venue for all kinds of

corporate and private events.

It also features six private function

suites including the Augusta and the

Chairman’s Marquee overlooking the

18th hole of the Roman Road course.

The Celtic Manor Golf Academy is

one of the best facilities of its kind

in Europe and was appointed the

Wales National Centre of Excellence

in 2009, when a new short game

practice area was opened by golfing

legend Arnold Palmer.

Built with the help of a Ryder Cup

Wales Legacy Fund grant, the short

game facilities include three all-

weather greens and tees at varying

elevations and distances.

They combine with a 28-bay, two-tier

covered driving range, an indoor

putting studio and outdoor short

offering extensive custom fit and game
