GOLF - 2010 - PORTUGAL TRAVEL NEWS 3
COVER
For the past 40 years Portugal Travel News (PTN) has been developing asilent work far from fait-divers and focusing on being an important tool topromote Portugal as a destination. Portugal was still plunge into dictatorshipwhen the international edition emerged from Publituris newspaper, the firstEnglish publication focused on our tourist destination. Tourism was still tak-ing its first steps and the country was coming out of the dark period that last-ed four decades. Golf was seen as an elite sport, an activity for the “rich”always linked to major businessmen and a certain right-wing political vision.Let’s not forget that left-wing parties were reinforced in the first post-revo-lution years.Today we cannot help but smile when we recall those times, they were almostamusing events. For example, Sir Henry Cotton, the British golf hero, winnerof three editions of the British Open, arrived in the Algarve in the 60s withthe mission to design and follow up the construction of Penina, the first golfcourse in our tourist destination. He also decided to settle here with his fam-ily. He was unquestionably the major promoter of golf in the Algarve after1967 through the movie and TV show “Wonderful World of Golf” and manyarticles in golf magazines. Sir Henry not only motivated the tourists but alsoimportant players. One of the delightful details of Sir Henry was his caddy,Pacífico, a fine Algarve donkey.Portugal and especially golf have many delightful stories. Currently our coun-try is one of the most accomplished golf destinations in the world. These arenot my words but the conviction of the players. In this edition we have select-ed some of the best greens so you can check them out for yourself.

ast October an international golftournament gathered the best pro-fessional golf players, thousands ofviewers and dozens of journalistsand national and foreign opinionmakers in one of the main interna-tional tourist destinations. The eventwas the third edition of PortugalMasters. It took place in the Algarve, which reinforced its status as an allyear-around golf destination par
excellence. The result was the projection of Portugal’s image for hun-dreds of thousands of fans and potential tourists in several countries. The attending golfers, prominent players in the European andInternational Top, the nearly 40 thousand viewers that watched thetournament onsite and over 650 hours of international TV broadcastsprovided by the event established Portugal as an undeniable destina-tion of the international route for the sport. But all this also proved thesuccess of the strategy of the official entity for tourism. Turismo dePortugal decided the tournament would take place for at least threeyears, placed Portugal Masters as one of the largest events in thetouristic and sports calendar in Europe and provided the Algarve andbusinessmen of the industry with yet another event, for them to previ-

ously program the touristic options on offer. However, in addition to guaranteeing its continuity it is also essential toassure a structured level and approach to golf. Hence in addition toPortugal Masters, Turismo de Portugal has been stimulating and sup-porting other structuring events for this sport such as Estoril Open dePortugal, Ladies Open, Madeira Islands Open, Portugal Nations Cup orthe venue Portugal Golf Show. The official entity perceives golf as an anchor for development, it helpsin the struggle against seasonability in tourism, it sponsors a balancedexpansion of the country and promotes abroad the exceptional condi-tions of the country to practice the sport simultaneously with the uniquequality of the touristic options and hotel offer. Moreover it is the enginefor regional and local economies that generates and expands businessopportunities for companies located in the areas influenced by the golfresorts and golf courses, which thus extend the greens, create and main-tain jobs, originate and share wealth.Besides appealing to tourists with an elevated purchasing power and forprolonged stays, golf bestows the destination with a perception of high-quality, valuing the environment as well as the associated facilities andservices. Portugal also has unique conditions provided by the weather, the land and the private investments carried out in recent years to attractgolfers in the so-called low season and hence increase the occupancyrates in hotels and sustain the demand for support services. However the major challenge for golf and the engaged agents – com-mon to the tourism industry all over the world in the next few years – willbe to guarantee the sustainability of the activity. By preserving and avoid-ing the excessive use of the natural resources, eliminating any potentialenvironmental threats, promoting the creation of qualified and stablejobs throughout the year, finding new ways to create and share wealth

with the local and regional communities, guaranteeing profitability butalso taking even more responsibility as an employer and developmentpotentiating agent. In this case, Portugal already has a new generation of golf facilities thatentailed the design of more efficient golf courses, the setting up andconversion of the sprinkling systems that significantly reduce energyconsumption, the creation of structures with a better incorporation in thelandscape and the conservation of the surrounding fauna and flora, thusincreasing the development together with other products such as birdwatching activities in the same area of the golf course.Turismo de Portugal is promoting the creation of a Product Club with thepurpose of contributing to that sustainability, which will allow not only forthe agents to share good practices in golf course management but alsoto contribute to the creation of integrated products with a higher addedvalue and extended advertisement, leading to the increase of the num-ber of golfers and a larger profitability of the investment.Besides the investment made in the last three years (2007-2009)included in “Plano de Golfe” (Plan for Golf), which allowed to support thehosting of events and its international promotion, the AutoridadeTurística Nacional, the national tourism authority, is partner in businesswith several tourist and hotel investments that comprise the constructionof golf facilities and is also taking part in the construction of the newpublic golf course at Jamor, with the aim of making the access to golfeasier for all citizens. In this product, similarly to the remaining strategicdirections, Turismo de Portugal is not limited therefore to watching butalso making it happen.

The golf course at Aldeia dos Capuchos, located in Caparica, just 15minutes away from Lisbon downtown, opened the new driving rangelast November. With a putting green, the 9-hole golf course now has agolf school for initiation, designed for all types of golfers. Here golf

players can learn and improve their game at classes coordinated by pro-fessional golf trainers.Next to the driving range there’s an inviting area where golfers can enjoya drink and socialise. The golf course is already approved to host official events; with 1402mtotal length, this is considered an executive course, it can be played inone round of 9 holes or in two, and cover up 2804m (7 PAR3 holes and2 PAR4 holes). And it’s perfect to test the skills of the several types ofplayers. Each hole has 2 tees (white and yellow) for men and 1 tee (red) forladies. Slight slopes, a large lake included in the game, well dimensionedgreens with minor rises, as well as bunkers strategically placed to pro-vide a pleasant challenge compel golfers to switch their skills in a per-manent test throughout the course.According to António Carmona dos Santos, manager of the Golf CourseAldeia dos Capuchos, “these executive 9-hole courses close to the citiesare great to promote golf since players can play one round in a shortperiod of time, even during lunch time, with no disturbance to the work-ing hours”.Golfers can also enjoy the Club House, an area with a beautiful land-scape over the Atlantic Ocean, the mouth of Tagus River, the lake, andHoles 1, 2 and 9 combined with the fine quality service.

“We will promote golfin new markets”
The opening of new air routes
through Ryanair starting
March 2010 will expand the
promotion of this product in
other markets such as the
Spanish, Italian and French
olf is still one of the touristic products of theAlgarve region with a special focus on theBritish, Irish, German, Dutch and Scandinavianmarkets.
How many golf courses does the Algarveregiona currently have and how many are
under construction?Presently, there are 35 golf courses in the Algarve. This year two newcourses were inaugurated from Oceânico Group, Amendoeira andO'Connor, and among those still under construction I would like toemphasize Almada de Ouro Resort in Azinhal, Castro Marim, an 18-holegolf course foreseen for 2012, Corte Velho by Six Senses, also inAzinhal and also an 18-hole course, for 2011/2012, and TerrasVerdelago Resort, in Altura, an 18-hole for the first trimester 2012.There are other projects anticipated from east to west in the Algarve,

and as soon as they get approved we will make them public.
How many rounds did the golf courses registered in the Algarve?Up until October, around 900 thousand rounds.
How much does golf represent in the tourism revenue of the Algarveregion?I don’t have the exact figures for the Algarve, but I can tell you that it’sabout 1,8 billion Euros in Portugal annually, it mobilizes about 300 thou-sand players, that is, around 1,4 million rounds and 1,1 million overnightstays.
What tournaments were hosted this year in the Algarve?Throughout the year many tournaments are hosted by the golf courses, however the highlight goes to Portugal Masters in Oceânico Victoria golfcourse, in Vilamoura, hosted in October. It is considered one of the bestgolf tournaments in Europe. ATA welcomes a European tournament inseveral strategic issuing countries for the Algarve (UK, Ireland, Germany, the Netherlands, Scandinavia) called Algarve Golf Trophy, the final ishosted annually in the region. The entity also supports tournamentsorganised by some international golf federations such as the Irish andDanish.
The Algarve is still continuing to receive awards as a golf destination. In addition to the two distinctions/prizes awarded by IAGTO in 2000 and2006 for best golf destination in the world, the Algarve was recentlyrecognised in 2008 and 2009 in the category "Destination with best golfcourses in Europe" at the Golf Magazine Awards that took place inCologne, Germany. The prize was awarded by Golf Magazine.
How will the promotion of this touristic product be carried out by theATA in 2010? In which markets, and what is the budget for thatadvertising?ATA will continue the strategy set in the current arrangement model witha special focus on the British, Irish, German, Dutch and Scandinavianmarkets. The opening of new air routes by Ryanair will expand the adver-tising of this product in other markets such as the Spanish, Italian andFrench. The budget will be similar to that of 2009, that is, around 1 mil-lion Euros.
When will an application be made to welcome the International GolfTravel Market (IGMT)?The 2010 edition is already confirmed for Valencia in Spain; therefore, weare currently considering the possibility to make an application for theAlgarve to host the event in 2011 or 2012.

GOLF - 2010 - PORTUGAL TRAVEL NEWS 27
Lisbon
Which golf courses are promoted by Lisboa Golf Coast? We are currently promoting all golf courses in Lisboa area. But of course weare actively promoting those associated with Lisbon’s tourism association,Lisbon Golf Coast, namely, Ribagolfe I & II, Santo Estévão, Tróia, Quinta doPeru, Aroeira I, Montado, Campo Real, Bom Sucesso, Golden Eagle, Praia d’ElRey, Estoril, Oitavos Dunes, Quinta da Beloura and Belas.
How many rounds have been performed in those golf courses?According to the data available, 388 thousand rounds were played.
How much does golf represent in Lisbon’s tourism revenue?Golf represents about 6% of direct revenues for Lisbon. A golfer spends onaverage about 205 Euros a day, and that is why golf players are such goodcustomers.
What tournaments were hosted this year in Lisbon? There were many tournaments, but the most important are always those relat-ed to the European Tour such as the Portugal Open at Oitavos golf courseand the Ladies Tour at Golden Eagle golf course. Apart from these majorinternational events other smaller ones were hosted for national and interna-tional amateur players.
Were there any noteworthy distinction in magazines?Lisboa Golf Coast is one of the few destinations that has 3 golf courses onthe "Top 100 Continental Europe" of the English magazine Golf World.
How will Lisboa Golf Coast promote this touristic product abroad in 2010,and in which markets will the advertising take place? What is the budget forthat support? The promotion will be carried out as in previous years with somechanges/adaptations to the increasingly competitive market. We will probablystart to pay more attention to the Scottish market. From March 4th onwardswe will have direct low cost flights between Edinburgh and Lisbon three timesa week, through EasyJet. Until now there were no direct flights betweenthese two cities, and without direct flights it is difficult to attract golfers. We will be promoting Lisboa Golf Coast in the UK, Ireland, the Netherlands,Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Finland and Norway. We will spend600 thousand Euros in advertising Lisboa Golf Coast in 2010.

famous golf architect once said “ To create agreat golf course requires a great piece ofland.” Bom Sucesso fulfils this statement tothe highest degree. The Resort sits in a val-ley with views to mountains in the West, thesea in the East and forested slopes to theNorth and South. The golf course features a

Steel, has made superb use of the terrain, providing a challengingtest of golf and also a sectacular ‘Nature Walk.’ Bom Sucesso has anenvironmental, green theme which the golf course upholds in everyway. The Eucalyptus trees removed during construction have beenreplaced by a mixture of Olive and Pine trees, while the fairways, rough and tees have been carpeted with a mixture of Bent, Fescueand Rye grasses which give a perfect green surface to play from, allyear round. The large, undulating greens are sown with Penn A4bent grass, which offer a fast, true surface to putt on, their con-struction features the USGA specification, which makes them holdwell struck shots and allows for pitch and run strokes as well. Theyalso have the benefit of immediate drainage, so that play is alwayspossible in any weather. As well as the natural heath land groundcover, hazards include several large lakes and beautifully maintainedsand traps, filled with white sand.
To prepare for your game, the practice facilities are first class andagain offer sublime views. The Range features three grass tees, fromwhich balls can be hit down to the base of a valley or across it to aplateau at the same height as the tees, six greens provide targets atvarying distances. The pitching green hás a large sand trap and thena variety of places to play from fairway or rough grass, with theoptions to play lob, pitch or pitch and run shots. Two putting greensallow players to practice this skill or just simply to learn the greenspeed, which is kept bewteen 9 and 10.5 on the stimpmeter. The permanent Clubhouse is currently under construction in it’slocation next to the site of the Hilton Hotel, due to open in 2012. Inthe meantime, a temporary clubhouse provides excellent service offood & beverage, locker rooms and storage for the buggies, trolleysand rental clubs. At check-in, there is a small shop which can supplygolfing requisites and logoed golf clothing.

The course has a par of 72, with the classic mixture of four par 5’s,four par 3’s and 10 par 4’s. Each hole has four tees, theChampionship, Players, Signature and Elegance, which offer a rangeof distances from 6,400 metres/7,040 yards down to 4,842metres/5,326 yards, so anyone can enjoy a game to suit their ability. The location is blessed with an idyllic climate for golf, with soft gen-tle breezes cooling the player in summer time and the valley settinghelping to hold heat and afford protection from the cooler north windin the winter. The Stuart Woodman Golf Academy provides the highest level ofcoaching, with Stuart holding the dual qualifications of AdvancedFellow and Honorary Memberof the PGA and the Resident ProfessionalFilipe Gonçalves being a fully qualified PGA of Portugal Member.Visiting professionals are welome to bring their own groups to play andlearn here by prior arrangement with the Golf Operations Manager.
For those wishing to stay on site, the choice of accommodation is of5 star quality, featuring T1, T2 and T3 units which are the reason forthe fame of Bom Sucesso. Golf and Tourism in Portugal
Golf is played in our country
since the 19th century, but
contrarily to what happened in
most countries, it only
developed recently as a result
of the tourism thrust
ur privileged climate as well as the creation ofseveral hotels oriented to the Sun & Beachmarket caused a problem related to season-ability. Hotels would be full during the summerbut had low occupancy rates for the rest ofthe year. After the creation of Le MéridienPenina Hotel & Golf in the 50s, and the hiring
of renowned professional Sir Henry Cotton to design and manage theentire complex, everything started to change. Attracted by the statusand prestige of the English golfer, guests from the UK started to seethe Algarve not only as a peaceful and protected destination where it
O
was pleasant to spend the summer months in the beach, but alsoas the new destination to play golf. The Algarve began strengthen-ing its position thanks to the quality of the golf courses, the pro-motional activities that the organisation of major internationalevents brought about and also the considerable increase of thenumber of accommodation units. In 2007 about 250 thousandtourists visited the Algarve as a result of this sport.Everything seemed secure. Demonstrating annual increases over7%, life was easy and nobody thought of assessing if the adaptedmodel was everlasting or if some changes should be made to pre-vent any alarming situations. When it was least expected, a global
financial crisis came to happen. The crisis affected many countries, among which the UK. It is easy to point fingers after mistakes aredone, but it is crucial to learn something from it.The golf oriented market did not cease to exist. There are current-ly 60 million golf players around the world, among those about 20million enjoy travelling to play the sport. In Europe, golf has beenstrengthening its position, in addition to the 3, 5 million British, there are also around 700 thousand golfers from Northern Europe,500 thousand German players, 400 thousand from France and 320thousand from Spain. However there is a strong decline in the num-ber of visitors.

What can we do?It seems clear that it is necessary to make some changes to the exist-ing model in order to maintain or increase the occupancy rates of ourgolf courses. We need to take urgent measures, for example:1. To create a national strategic plan for golf. All interested entities
should participate in the development of the golf industry inPortugal.
2. To perform integrated promoting actions, by region or even nation-wide.
3. To diversify the offer compared to the traditional markets, takingaction in the Northern European countries and more assertively inthe Spanish market.
4. To promote without further delay the practice of golf on a nationallevel, attracting more players through training programs to be per-formed in the several golf courses. Without the domestic market, itis not possible to consolidate our golf industry.
5. To improve the current trading systems turning to the direct salethrough the Internet (it is essential to rely on an excellent nationalwebsite in which all Golf Courses should participate).
6. To get advantageous deals with different airlines, especially withthe national airline, in order to get special tariffs for golfers.
ConclusionIt is necessary to face the crisis as an ordinary event that will berepeated every so often and understand that there are no indis-putable systems. Those who adapt manage to survive. Given thecurrent conditions of the market, our position can be characterisedby:
In 2007 about 250thousand tourists visitedthe Algarve as a result of
this sport

Positive factors:- First-class golf courses, enough in number to become a golf desti-
nation.- We exist in the market for many years, and we are acknowledged for
our quality.- We have been promoting our destination through major events.- We have an exceptional climate.- We have fine-quality hotels, enough in number for the market.- We have a high-quality offer for supplementary and cultural pro-
grams.
Negative factors:- We are very dependant from the British market.- We need to considerably improve the level of our services.- We must show a better commercial assertiveness.- We have to improve the cooperation between the various golf
courses.- We need to define strategies through a global plan for the indus-
try of golf.- We have a domestic market that is very small.- Transportation costs are very high from and to the foreign markets.
Moreover there is the most determining factor to succeed:“Quality/price ratio”. If there is the means to take advantage of themany benefits and if we adapt the necessary measures that put anend to or lessen our weaknesses, it will be possible to go through thisdifficult period and maybe come out of it bearing a reinforced posi-tion.

Azores
Ever heard of rustic golf?Come to the Azores…
uch has been written about golf and muchmore will be written, from the perpetual andmethodical question about its origin to whichplayers can say they had the pleasure to bethe first to play the game. Maybe the Chinese? And why not the Flemish or the French? Andwhere are the Scottish in the middle of the
controversy?Guias Essenciais – Golfe, by Arnold Palmer, Ed. D.K./Civilização“… the only fact in the entanglement of rumors and theories is that thefirst printed reference to golf dates back from 1457, in an Act ofParliament issued by James II, King of Scotland. It stated: ‘football andgolf should be utterly outcast and must not be practiced’, and in facthe managed to banish the game. The king was worried that many ofhis countrymen were at the golf courses improving their swing whenthey should be practicing target shooting. It was unlikely that using aclub would keep away invaders, whereas a straight flying arrowwould…”
M History proves that in Scotland all social classes “used clubs to strikeanything available” and played in courses created at their own judg-ment, thus there was the need to have a standard regulation. The reg-ulation would be introduced in 1764 by William St. Clair of Roslin, headof the golf clubs of Leith and St. Andrews. From this date on, treatiesincluding the rules and its interpretations never stopped. Thousands ofgolf courses appeared worldwide. Millions of golfers practice theirswing and fail at the putt, and think: “Tomorrow I’ll hit the perfect score”.Arnold Palmer once said: “What other people may find in poetry or artmuseums, I find in the flight of a good drive". Let us be level-headedand combine all this in the pleasure of art. Millions of players breathe inhealthy atmospheres in the 4 to 8km when roaming the green fields, enjoying a quietness that is crucial to a good stroke and the tranquilli-ty and richness of the human relationships that sports provide, eitherwith other people or privately. But where does the Rustic Golf of Azores that was mentioned earliercomes from? These are nine islands, coincidentally one island for eachtee and pin, a perfect first round of golf.
In December 2006 at S. Miguel we conducted the first experience with five
pioneer golfers. The mingling sessions are still taking place and we have played
17 times in almost all the islands, except Graciosa and Terceira

the fields where their herds graze. Others envision the creation of a per-manent golf circuit and are preparing to train and challenge the nextdoor neighbour for a play.
Rustic Golf of the Azores - 1st Circuit of the Forest RecreationalReserve in S. Miguel
With the cooperation of the Direcção Regional dos Recursos Florestais(forest resources department) and the Direcção Regional de Turismo, the tourism entity for the Azores, we are currently preparing the “RusticGolf of the Azores – 1st Circuit of the Forest Recreational Reserve in S.Miguel” in 2010. The circuit will be comprised of the 6 events, one foreach municipality, and will take place between March and October. Theactivity will be included in a promotion and development strategy for golfand also aimed to advertise the Forest Recreational Reserves and itssuitability for integrated leisure activities to enjoy and respect Nature. To talk about golf is exciting. It’s a game played in the sand of the desertor the snow of the mountains. Golf is (special) strokes in cities, towns orvillages. Golf is Imagination! And our own very “serious” joke: “Life is a game, the important is golf!”Enjoy your clubs.

Four islands are PAR3 – Sta. Maria, Graciosa, Flores and CorvoThree islands are PAR4 – Terceira, S. Jorge and FaialTwo islands are PAR5 – S. Miguel and Pico
At Azores there are only three golf courses, two in S. Miguel Island, oneof them, created in 1939, is one of the oldest in Portugal, and anotherin Terceira. The islands provide endless pastures sided by wonderfultrees and flowers, creeks, exuberant landscapes including challengingfog, stone walls and “corraletas”.At Azores we also have a passion for Nature and an immense pleasurefor golf. Let us return to the origin and like the Scottish start to walk thefields to see if we hit the small hole signaled by a flagpole with thefewest amount of strokes. In December 2006 at S. Miguel we conducted the first experience withfive pioneer golfers. The mingling sessions are still taking place and wehave played 17 times in almost all the islands, except Graciosa andTerceira. We’ve played in several areas, but in Caldeirão in Corvo Islandor on top of the ashes of the Capelinhos volcano it was a grand andunforgettable experience since we felt small, reduced to our realdimension. At all events we worried that the villages promoted thegame together with our cooperation and we wished to develop initiationactivities for children and adults. And our wish became true, a satisfac-tion for us.In the rustic greens of the Azores 97 golfers have already played. Manyalready purchased the equipment and started on tournaments across
