Imagery, Simile

•“At midday the illusions merged into the sky and there the sun gazed down like an angry eye.” (58) •The boys are looking in the sky and imagining things, they feel like the sun is staring back at them with heat. If Society had no rules we wouldn’t have to do anything but sit and stare at the sky and imagine which would create chaos. By making the sun angry, it makes the people hot. Without any laws we could all be in trouble because if someone was angry they might start destroying things.•“The Glittering Sea rose up, moved apart in planes of blatant impossibility; the coral reef and the few stunted palms that clung to the more elevated parts would float up to the sky, would quiver, be plucked apart, run like raindrops on a wire or repeated as in an odd succession of mirrors.”

Figurative Language, Connotation

“Became a blow that they ducked” (Golding 58) In the quote it is in the afternoon and the sun blew heat which the boys ran from.“Blow” shows negative connotation, implying being hit by the heat. This directs the allegory by showing that the boys are being childish so they do things that aren’t necessary. Without rules we will live in chaos because kids won’t know right from wrong.

Tone

“If only I’d some green!” (PG.63) Jack yelled when painting his face. “Twisted in the urgency of telling.”(63)

Symbol

Jack Had his group (The Choir) have painted faces and long hair because they were the hunters. So when the rest of the group saw them they could tell they were part of Jacks hunting group.

Indirect Characterization

“For Hunting like the war. You know – dazzle paint . Like things trying to look like something else –” He twisted in the urgency of telling. “—Like moths on a tree trunk.” (63) Jack wants to be a hunter and he wants to hide from the Pigs and other animals to kill them. This is an allegory that tells Jack wants to paint his face and go hunting, which could be really dangerous then he could start killing humans (People).

Direct Characterization

“Jack was loud and active. He gave orders, sang, whistled, threw remarks at the silent Ralph.”(72)Society would be chaos without rules we would be yelling and fighting. In the story Ralph was mad because Jack didn’t keep the fire going and a ship passed. Jack did not like Ralph’s rules so he started giving orders and Ralph was silent because he didn’t know what to say.

Archetypes

“Ralph! Please….Ralph!” Piggy is kind of nerdy character and telling them to do the right thing. Piggy tries o get Ralph and Jack to do the right thing but they don’t listen. Without rules society would be crazy and people would being doing whatever they wanted to do.

Internal and External Conflict

External: Jack Doesn’t like Ralphs rules and feels that he should be leader and not ralphInternal: Ralph is the leader but he feels Jack is trying to take over or take whoever is on His side so Ralph is struggling.
