When the time finally arrived for me to depart from my hotel in Honolulu for my short journey to the airport to catch my flight to Suva, the capital city of Fiji, I asked the young girl on reception duty if she would order a taxi to take me to the airport. Imagine my surprise when this huge stretch taxi turned up, and I had visions of being charged a kings ransom for the journey !! Absolutely not: Apparently a taxi is a taxi, and they all charge the same rate per journey.Whoopee!! I climbed on board, and was amazed at the size, and luxury of this behemoth. It was amazing,so now I have pleasant memories of both my arrival on, and departure from, the Hawaiian Islands. The flight to Fiji took around 6 hours, and I arrived at Suva international airport at approximately 03:00hrs.There to greet the incoming flight was a small group of musicians decked out in their local finery. It was all very colourful, but those beach shirts made my eyes water a bit at that time of the morning!!The passage through Immigration, and Customs was quite painless as we were the only flight due in that night, and the locals very kindly opened the Duty Free shop for us to purchase duty free goodies.......Yes, youread that right........They opened when we cleared Customs!!! How different is that??Well, this totally laid back attitude set the tone for the whole of my stay on this tropical paradise, and when I thought about the number of Fijian guys I had served alongside in the army, I couldn’t help but wonder why

they would ever want to leave this place. Perhaps, like me, it was a chance to seek some adventure, and see the world at the taxpayers expense!!The accommodation at my lovely beach side hotel consisted entirely of individual chalets, and they were all within comfortable strolling distance of the hotel’s main reception, bar and dining area. Sound idyllic? It truly was, and then the very next night it all went pear shaped. Yep, at 04:00hrs there was a loud banging on my door, and a rather agitated voice telling me that I really ought to move out of my chalet as the sea was on it’s way in. I swung my legs out of bed, and “Splash”, the sea had actually arrived. Luckily I have a habit of leaving my back-pack up off the floor out of the reach of creepy crawlies so I was able to grab my kit, and move at short notice.Everyone made their way to the reception area where the bar was opened, and we holed up until the storm abated. The atmosphere was amazing with everyone looking upon the whole thing as just something else to talk about when they got back home.I can’t possibly finish the tale of my stay on Fiji in this column, so I look forward to telling you more about these lovely people in the next issue. Until next time, watch how you go, stay healthy and enjoy living!

Travel insurance for the over 60’s has never been more accessible.

As more of the world opens up to tourism the idea of cruising the Volga, or watching the sun set over the South China Sea is no longer the reserve of the young and well heeled. Nowadays more and more people are travelling later in life and further than they ever dreamt about a decade ago.

Likewise, a decade or so back if you were over a certain age or had suffered from certain illnesses the ability to get full cover was slim.

It seemed as if you were doomed to a life of coach trips to Clacton!

This has all changed. Specialist insurance brokers, such as Travel Insured in Hastings, can offer cover regardless of age. In addition they can cover most pre-existing medical conditions.

Travel Insured, part of Manor Insurance, have a range of policies and so one call to them can save you many hours ringing around. They welcome personal visitors to their offices on the seafront and are always willing to assist with queries.

“The advisors were particularly pleasant and very helpful. The insurance premiums compared very favourably with other companies”

There is a question playing on the minds of many older people these days, along the lines of:“We have worked hard all our lives to leave something for our children and grandchildren. Why should the local authority get it all?”

If you have to go into care and you have assets that total more than £23,250 (including the value of your home), you will have to fund your care in full. A care home costs, on average, £36,000 a year. The reality is that your children could end up with very little. Although care may seem a distant possibility right now, there are important steps you should take now to protect your home.

Married Couples: A legal trust arrangement within your will could save your family tens of thousands of pounds and ensure your hard earned wealth passes to those you choose. Widowed/Single: The options available to you to protect your home are fewer and it is vital you act now.“I’m protected, I’ve signed my house over to my children.”What would happen if your child/children were to experience marital difficulties and your home forms part of a divorce settlement? Did you know that capital gains tax is payable on second homes, meaning a potentially huge tax bill when your home is eventually sold by your children? It’s not too late to put it right, call Collective Legal Solutions on 01424 854561 or 07967 159376 www.clshastings.co.uk

Make a Match and Share Your Home in East SussexAn innovative new scheme has been launched to provide help and support for the elderly and vulnerable in East Sussex.‘Homeshare’ aims to match people together so that a householder gets a bit of extra help around the house in return for letting someone live in their home. This could be for anyone aged 18 years or over who may need help because they have a physical or learning disability, a mental health problem or feel they just need that extra bit of support to live independently.Adult Social Care will organise this match so that both parties benefit from the arrangement and will ensure that it is working well. Usually the householder will be an elderly person living on their own, providing a room for their sharer rent-free. In return the sharer will give about 10 hours a week unpaid help, such as cooking dinner, gardening or shopping. This works out well for both parties as they are safe in the knowledge that they are secure and have support from a Homeshare Co-ordinator in Adult Social Care. The Co-ordinator will aim to put the right people together, ensure security checks are in place, conduct in-depth interviews and provide ongoing support. This includes helping with the initial agreement and then monitoring its success. If the arrangement does not work out then it can be ended and new matches found if appropriate. One success story has been Pat, 73 and Nick, 54, who live in East Hoathly. They started sharing in Pat’s house this January and things

are going so well they recently featured on BBC Radio 4’s ‘Woman’s Hour’.Pat, who is retired, said:‘This is a great idea. It means I can get help with maintaining my home, my garden and going shopping or to the garden centre and also have someone to talk to. It’s great having Nick around as it helps me lead an independent life and I don’t have to ask the neighbours for help. I am also reassured that all checks have been made and that I have the support of the Co-ordinator if I need it.”Nick, who works at a local golf club, said:“I have been extremely fortunate in the match that was made through Homeshare, Not only do Pat and I share many common interests such as gardening, animals and the natural world; we also share a similar sense of humour and both of us see the lighter side of life. I have enjoyed my first six months and look forward to many more to come.”There are four homeshare arrangements in East Sussex so far, with another one due to start at the end of August. More than 22 people are in the process of being matched.

I Had A Dream

After a serious road accident where I suffered multiple injuries, I was hospitalised for several weeks. Surgery and rehabilitation followed, the p rognos i s was depressing, and mobility was impossible. However, due to the determination of myself and my sister, a trained reflexologist who treated me during my stay in hospital and beyond, I astounded the NHS by a marked improvement in my movements and general well being. Although my mobility was not perfect at this stage, I was inspired to research into holistic/complementary methods of healing, and | have never looked back. Now I run upstairs, chase for a disappearing train, and take long country walks. My recovery is ongoing and when asked “Are you better now?” I can only reply ‘I’m still improving”.

This life experience inspired me to realize my dream to help other people from all walks of life who search for a healthy lifestyle away from the pressures of 21st Century. I opened ‘YouNique Wellbeing Studios’ where people of all ages and gender can enjoy a holistic approach to their hectic lifestyle, and our team of professionals recognise that everyone has their own individual needs.

Pioneering varicose vein surgeons join the Benenden Hospital team Benenden Hospital has expanded its varicose veins service – with the arrival of a new team who are leaders in their field.Mr Eddie Chaloner and Mr Aaron Sweeney joined the Hospital in May. They are leading experts in minimally invasive varicose vein surgery. They were the first surgeons in London and the South East of England to use the revolutionary Endovenous Laser in 2002 and have established a reputation for innovation and excellence in this field. They regularly teach and demonstrate advanced vein surgery techniques under local anaesthetic at national and international surgical conferences and in 2010 were the first surgeons in the UK to use the latest Clarivein technique, which is a virtually painless way of treating varicose veins. The two pioneering consultant vascular surgeons have successfully treated many thousands of patients.

What are varicose veins?Varicose veins are bulging and blue veins that occur on the legs. They often appear as people get older and for women they can occur early on as a result of pregnancy. In most cases there will not be any symptoms or complications, but some sufferers may feel they are unsightly. They can make sufferers self conscious and affect the way they would normally dress as well as spoiling their enjoyment of beach holidays, swimming, keeping fit and other activities. Some people may experience pain, especially if they

have been standing for long periods. Those who do suffer serious discomfort should not leave symptoms untreated as problems can progress to conditions which are then difficult to treat.

What can be done?Benenden Hospital offers a convenient walk-in walk-out treatment with its expert surgeons using advanced laser treatment, sclerotherapy and local anaesthetics to effectively treat varicose veins and the smaller spider veins as a day case patient service.

Why choose Benenden Hospital?Varicose vein surgery is now significantly restricted on the NHS. In the majority of areas only patients with the most severe symptoms are allowed to be treated.Benenden Hospital offers rapid access to treatment for private patients, at a very competitive price and to Benenden Healthcare Society members.Treatment will be carried out by highly skilled surgeons and you will be cared for by compassionate nursing staff. You will also have the reassurance of knowing the Hospital’s infection rates are very low and that the customer satisfaction rating is more than 99%.

Chef to the stars lands at The Hawthorns

When you’ve cooked for thousands at the Olympics and, before that, the likes of Madonna, Pink, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder

and Christina Aguilera, life at an Eastbourne retirement development should be calm by comparison. But for Sean Paterson, newly appointed head chef at The Hawthorns in Carew Road, the road ahead is more of a challenge to him than the Olympics.Sean was asked 18 months ago by the Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) if he would head up the catering at the Royal Artillery Barracks in London for the broadcasting and commentating teams and the athletes’ families. At the time, Sean was busy travelling the world as a personal chef to some of the biggest names in pop. He was Pink’s personal chef for 18 months. The call from the OBS was too big a challenge for 38-year-old Sean to turn down.“I must have visited and cooked in just about every country in the world whilst I was on the rock ‘n’ roll circuit. It was great fun but you can only do it for so long. The call from the OBS offered me a fresh challenge. I was planning it for 18 months and, in the end, it went remarkably smoothly. The biggest challenge was overseeing three meals a day for so many different nationalities. I’d start at 3.30am and finish about 10.30pm,” said Sean.So after so much trekking around the world and then the excitement of the Olympics, what brought him to Eastbourne and The Hawthorns?“To be honest, after the past five years, I was looking at semi-retirement. When I was younger, I spent time in Broadstairs training as a chef at Thanet College, and I always liked the area. When I looked around the wide

area, I came to Eastbourne and fell in love with it.“The Hawthorns is an exceptionally high quality development and I have already discovered many of the residents have a very good knowledge of food. My challenge is to prepare and present meals which tick the boxes of some 100 people who may have different ideas on what represents a really enjoyable meal. I’ll be talking with them and, between us, I hope to come up with something really special,” said Sean.So well was his Olympic work received, he has already been approached to work at the winter Olympics in Russia in 2014 and the next Olympics in Brazil in 2016, so residents at The Hawthorns may have to do without their in-demand chef for a few weeks.Sean added: “These two events will be easier because I will use the template that worked so successfully in London, but it is nonetheless a great honour to be asked to carry on the good work.”After qualifying at the renowned Thanet College, Sean’s first job was at The Hilton in Park Lane. He went on to chef at the Michelin two-star Oak Room in Le Meridien Hotel, Piccadilly and at Marco Pierre White’s Canteen Hotel in Chelsea Harbour before being appointed Group Chef of London Catering Services which provided fine dining catering to the likes of Pinewood Studios.Kiki Grigat, Manager at The Hawthorns, which offers residents a unique retirement lifestyle where all day-to-day bills including food, housekeeping, utilities and excursions are covered by one simple, all-inclusive monthly rental said: “We are thrilled to have Sean join us. His CV speaks for itself and we are incredibly fortunate to have acquired his services. I am sure our residents can look forward to some fabulous meal-times.”

Tricia’s Column

Hello again, I hope you've all been enjoying the lovely, unpredictable English summer! Since my last column, I've been busy as usual, spending time on our wonderful

local beaches and enjoying some of the sunnier days in the park.We were lucky enough to have fantastic weather for a visit to the Eastbourne Airshow this year. I was quite happy to relax in a deckchair with my eyes shut enjoying the sun, but everyone else seemed more interested in staring up into the sky!If you've not been to Bexhill over the summer, it's worth popping for a walk along the seafront before the start of October to see the "Italian Job" coach on the roof! As well as the novelty of the coach, Bexhill seafront has had a bit of a makeover lately making it an even more enjoyable place for a stroll by the sea.

Another highlight of the summer for me was a visit to Blackstock Farm with the grandchildren. As well as having lots to do for the little ones, including excellent indoor and outdoor play areas, it also had a wonderful farm shop and a Cafe which overlooks

some really stunning countryside.Last issue we ran a competition to win tickets to see "Dreamboats and Petticoats" at the White Rock Theatre on the opening night, 17th September. These tickets were won by Mrs Wendy Lewis of St

Leonards. I've got tickets to the show myself and I'm looking forward to a great night out.We also had two pairs of passes to the "Seven Wonders of the Weald" which were won by Lesley Whiteman of Eastbourne and Elaine Richards of Heathfield. I'm sure they'll have a fabulous time exploring these wonderful attractions. As ever there's a lot of exciting things going on locally this autumn. September seems to be a good month for food and craft markets (See our events listings), there's also the Rye arts festival and the Coastal Currents arts festival, offering a bit of culture in September. In October, both Hastings and Eastbourne hold their bonfire parades and firework displays ahead of the November rush and the Sussex Baby and Toddler

show returns to Eastbourne. For those of you with grandchildren it's a great place to visit, see the ad below for more details.Another tip for grandparents is to look out for our sister publication "The Family Buzz" (left) which offers a wide variety of ideas to help keep the kids occupied! That's it from me till the

winter issue, have fun!

TriciaLOCAL CHILDREN GET ONE STEP CLOSER TO NEVERLAND

27 young people aged 8 - 19 from across East Sussex have been cast in Peter Pan, set to be staged at the White Rock Theatre this Christmas. The recently held auditions were jointly organised by the White Rock Theatre and pantomime producer One From The Heart, who will stage this year’s sensational Christmas show starring veteran of stage and screen Paul Nicholas as Captain Hook. The lucky children from Hastings, St. Leonards, Eastbourne , Winchelsea, and Pebsham were selected as dancers and to play the part of John and Michael in this year’s swashbuckling pirate pantomime adventure!Over 100 young hopefuls took to the stage as the creative team guided them through the audition process. Howard Barnes Theatre Director said “It was great to see so many young people coming to the theatre, keen to have the opportunity to be part of this years’ pantomime, and to work alongside a professional cast.” Peter Pan opens on Saturday 8 December at the White Rock Theatre, Hastings. Surely, we've done our bit - worn the mini-skirts, platform shoes, flared jeans, hot pants. Thank goodness that's over! But whilst we might be getting older in years, we're getting younger relative to previous generat ions. Most women who see their 60th birthday will also see their 90th! If we don't want to become invisible, we need to remain contemporary, stylish and interesting. But how do we do that without making a fool of ourselves? The key is to dress for your body shape. Forget your age for a while and concentrate on shape. If a mini-skirt looked great when you were 25, it will probably look great now. You may just need to wear opaque tights or stretch

trousers underneath. If you have a defined waist, show it off, even if you are a stone heavier than when you were 20. Once you know what suits you, adapt your look to be appropriate to your age and your lifestyle. No point having a wardrobe full of floaty chiffon dresses if you spend your life mucking out horses!

If you haven't discovered layering, you're missing a trick.Wearing layers allows you to create a new body shape. Not entirely, of course - I'm never going to be Kate Moss - but it will help streamline the body, create new silhouettes and hide the bits you don't want on show. Muffin tops are discretely hidden, big thighs are covered by tunics, belts create a cinched waist (even when there is no real one!). Slim leg trousers with a tunic under a long cardigan is a perfect look for a pear-shape, whilst a waterfall cardigan over a shorter top will suit an apple-shape. Layering is really, really easy once you know how. It's best to get professional advice (see my website) but here are my 3 top tips to successful layering:• Balance the body - a chunky top needs slim legs whilst a

fitted top can be offset with wide trousers or boots and socks over slim trousers.

• Start with a thin, sheer long top and build layers getting thicker and shorter. Use a scarf or shawl rather than a coat to get a more unstructured look.

• Stick to one colour palette - neutrals, different shades of grey, black or navy can be brightened with a print scarf or belt.

Buy With Confidence – Trading Standards Approved

Did you know that East Sussex County Council Trading Standards can provide you with details of reliable local businesses? The Buy With Confidence Scheme brings together a diverse list of businesses from all over East Sussex, which have been individually checked for compliance with consumer protection laws. Officers from Trading Standards audit every applicant and only if they pass stringent checks are they accepted onto the scheme and can then display the Buy With Confidence logo. And it doesn’t stop there. Once a business becomes a member of the scheme they are constantly monitored by the Trading Standards Service to make sure that their standards aren’t slipping. Feedback is invited from their customers and re-visits are carried out. While we cannot guarantee that anything will never go wrong, if you have a problem with a member of the scheme they are required to deal with any complaints in a fair and equitable manner. If the complaint cannot be resolved, the Trading Standards Service can assist in reaching a solution.Launched in 2004 by East Sussex County Council, the scheme has grown to include over 400 local businesses offering a vast range of goods and services. For details of businesses you can trust please visitwww.eastsussex.gov.uk/buywithconfidence For your FREE copy of our Buy & Support With Confidence Directory, please call 01323 463440 or email [email protected] If you would like to become a member of the scheme, please call the team on 01323 463440 for more information and to request an application pack.

All the team at Whites proudly welcome you to our family run restaurant situated on George Street in Hastings’

historic Old Town. Nestled between the ancient East and West Hills, Whites is just a short distance from Rock-a-Nore beach, home to the local fishing fleet, with it’s famous black net huts. Our Specials Board is changed daily to reflect the differing seasons and the availability of local produce, much of which is landed yards away by the Hastings fishing fleet. During summer we also offer dishes such as fresh, local old town whole plaice with caperberry sauce or fresh dressed crab with marinated seafood salad. Our steaks are all top quality British beef and are char-grilled to your preference to give them the mouth watering flavour we are so well known for.Visit www.whitesbar.co.uk to view our wonderful seafood platters, the best in Hastings, as well as our everyday main menu. We also have a Light Lunch Menu, offering one course for £8.50pp or two courses for £12.50pp. For those crisp, sunny autumn

afternoons, Whites has a canopied outside dining area where we are able to seat approximately 20 people. The perfect spot to enjoy the ambiance of Hastings Old Town or to take a break from the Seafood and Wine Festival in September or Hastings Bonfire Parade in October. Families are warmly welcomed; high chairs and a separate children’s menu are available for our younger guests. Here at Whites we are always aiming to improve our business and we are very proud of our newly refitted open kitchen. We hope to welcome you to Whites soon, please contact us if there is anything we can do to make your visit even more enjoyable.Bon appetit!

Alex and Ellie

On a busy Saturday evening, in August, the Golden Times team visited Whites

Seafood and Steak Bar to see for ourselves why it's rated so highly by day trippers and locals alike.Inside, Whites has a modern, stylish feel and the dining area is impeccably clean and comfortable. Despite coping with a full house, the waiting staff (Including owner, Ellie) all had time to chat to the customers, sharing their knowledge of the menu and engaging in some friendly banter. This served to give Whites an informal, friendly atmosphere conducive to a great evening out.We made our selection from the wide range of wines on offer and began the difficult task of choosing our food. One of the great advantages of Whites for us was the good range of meat dishes on offer to complement their

seafood specialities. Despite not being a lover of seafood myself, I had plenty of options, eventually deciding upon a starter of chicken & bacon medley followed by belly pork. Debby plumped for English mussels and fish pie.

The starters were not only delicious, but also very generous in size, we certainly had to take care to leave some space for our main course & dessert! My pork was mouthwateringly succulent and tender and accompanied perfectly by leek mash, fresh seasonal vegetables and a tangy apple sauce. The

fish pie was rich and sumptuous with generous chunks of perfectly cooked seafood. In keeping with the starters, the main courses were generously sized, by this time we were getting seriously concerned that desert would be a plate too far. In the interests of providing our readers with a comprehensive review however, we managed to share a wonderful warm chocolate fudge cake. Throughout the evening the staff were attentive without being intrusive and all three courses arrived promptly and perfectly presented. All in all we can give Whites a resounding thumbs up from the Golden Times team. Excellent food, great service and a warm welcome, what more could you ask for ?
